    Fantastic review! I believe face detection for video is an option and works fine in 1080p. You lose it during 4k recording though. Sad. Would love to see all my skin in incredible detail as I vlog. Cheers.

      A pleasure to read you fine words, and thanks for that note - that is something I should have checked, although it is disheartening to think that every feature needs to be checked to make sure if it does or doesn't work in 4K and/or HD. And I will note that this is a problem not only with Fuji.

    Thanks for this Maarten. I've recently purchased the X-T20 and this review has helped me in many ways. There's so much to take in from a manual that it becomes rather confusing at time. Having a video review available makes such a difference. No doubt it will just take time to familiarise myself with the camera but all the help and tips are in this review are greatly appreciated.

    I marvel at your facility with all these cameras, Maarten. And your photographs are so good - hopefully they do not zip by unappreciated by the viewers. Thanks to your attention to detail, this is is all the tutorial - even though technically a review - I (and I would suspect most!) will need. Again, your cogent, no-nonsense style is refreshingly helpful. To the commentor who suggested you are speaking a bit fast - remember one can use the Gear Icon on the RUclips screen to slow (or speed up!) the playback. Thanks, Maarten - another superb and very helpful review!

    Great complete review as expected Maarten! I love this little camera, although I don't think its up for replacing my D7200 system. But a great second for carrying and traveling, it just feels so good with the 18-55 kit for a small light camera with a big sensor. Might have to get one.

    Excellent review!! One of the best on RUclips! I've been thinking of upgrading from the xt10. I'm torn between xt20 or xt-2. With the cost difference I could by another lens! Is it worth the upgrade? If so, which would you suggest of the two?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      I appreciate the kind words, my preference is the X-T2. It is a superior video tool, and all the little things add up - here's my comparison: ruclips.net/video/FczVOAC-ChE/видео.html That said, If you're primarily going to take stills - there's a great deal to like about the X-T20, and in my mind a better lens is always a better choice.

    Great video, I've been waiting for weeks for such an detailed review on this camera as there are not many reviews on it on the internet yet.
    I've also watched your video for the sony alpha 6300 and both videos are great, but still I'm not sure which one of those two cameras I'm supposed to buy... Maybe you could make a comparison between these two? I'd really appreciate such a video! :)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thanks for the kind words - I get that, I've been working on it for weeks. I'm not sure that a side-by-side comparison for those two is in the cards, sorry. If you're shooting video, the Sony is better featured (profiles and all), but both are over-heaty. For stills, and for photographers with manual shooting preferences, the physical controls of the Fuji make it the better choice.

      hi Maarten. How do you compare video quality between A6300 and X-T20 ? which camera has better video quality ? Thank you in advance

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      In HD, I'd give the edge to Fuji; for 4K, as long as you're using the 24frame "super35" mode, there might be a slight edge to Sony. However, I think that these are differences that only pros might appreciate. Although their colour treatments are different (in the default settings anyway) the quality of the image is very close.

    Hello Maarten. This is the BEST review of the X-T20 from the many I have seen. OUTSTANDING! The fact that you show so many of the actual menus is priceless to getting a real feel for how the camera works. I really like your approach of showing so many things and not dwelling on points. You cover a ton of information in a very short time, and although it is somewhat painless to rewind to hear it again, I think a bit slower on some things you highlight (such as the menus) would be helpful. The fact that the FRONT COMMAND DIAL CANNOT BE CUSTOMIZED is important information. Thanks again for an AWESOME review!!
    Sadly in-body stabilization is something that will most likely NEVER be implemented on Fuji cameras. That I think is the one major flaw of the system. And not all of their lenses are stabilized either.
    And I would have loved to hear your comments on the UNCOMPRESSED RAW files and whether they have fully conquered the “waxy skin” look that plagued the X-T1.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thank you for taking the time to post such kind words, appreciated. I did compare the JPG and RAW files - and honestly, Fuji does such a nice job of creating JPEGs that I rarely check the RAW. I wasn't aware that was a defect.

    • @tsoktsak7177

      I customized my front dial to SS (while top SS knob on T) and rear dial to ISO (focus check turned off). When using 27mm/f2.8 with no aperture ring, the rear dial is my aperture adjustment, push rear dial then it becomes my ISO, front remains SS.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      @@tsoktsak7177 Aren't these customizations great? The one you mention is particularly useful, but then I sometime accidentally switch the ISO.

    Fuji, in my opinion, is the best mirrorless company out there right now. Even their more simple cameras, such as the X100 series , produces at expert level quality while keeping the price and usability down to an amatuer level.
    As a professional photographer, who shoots with a Nikon D4s, D5 and D500 for my professional needs, I put in a ton of time researching a quality travel camera that both my girlfriend and I could use on our trip to New Orleans. The X100T was what I ended up picking and I was just blown away with the image quality and how it allowed to me have the control I prefer while also working well enough in full auto for my girlfriend to get good shots as well.
    I'm definitely a DSLR guy at heart, but at this point I always point people towards Fuji when people ask me for a good camera they just want to shoot around.

    Hello Maarten, congratulations for the review.
    The other day I was looking for a review of the new Panasonic G85/80. You were pretty happy with the g7, I wonder why there has not been any review for the G85. I hesitate between the x-t20, o-m10 ii and the g85 :-D. And I have one question. Do you think that for subject isolation do we really need aps-c sensor or with the panasonic 25mm 1.7 is fine on m43? Thank you!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      I appreciate the kind words, thanks. I see lots of reviews for the G85 - but I imagine you're asking why I haven't gotten to it. And it's really unfair to comment on cameras that I haven't evaluated ... but I think that it might take a little more fiddling with position of camera to performer to background to achieve the right effect, it's certainly possible with that combination.

    Maarten thank you for such a detailed and well thought review.
    I am really enticed by the xt20. As an enthusiast i shoot Canon 6D but my travel kit is a6000 with a few primes. While I like the small format and in general good image quality of the Sony have never loved the camer nor their lens selection for a-psc bodies. This Fuji looks like a nice balance of size, control dials and image quality. May I ask for your opinion? (Yes just you personal opinion ) between a6000 a6300 a6500 and the Fuji XT20 what would be your travel kit system of choice? Thank you. Loving your entire channel and content with your friendly clear to the point style

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words. Unless you're shooting video, I'd stay with the value that the A6000 represents - both because you own it, but because it is a great bargain. That said, I too am very fond of Fuji's image quality - part of which can't be reproduced thanks to the X-Trans sensor. But otherwise, a little careful tuning in Lightroom can turn Sony's cold and understated colours into a more pleasing result.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      There should not be - although I'm certain that there was reason to suspect goods based on country of origin in the past, I think that the large international brands have quality control systems to make certain that doesn't happen. And no-one seems to fault the quality of Apple's products, which are primarily made in Japan and may have the world's highest standards.

      Thank you for your response. Personally I tried the Sony A6300 at my local camera store, but the handling just didn't feel right to me. I feel like the Fuji X-T20 has better ergonomics and handling IMHO. Of course as always, it comes down to personal preference.

    Great review as usual. Thank you. When you start demonstrating movie focus pulls at 6:54 I can see absolutely visible and annoying micro-hunting at the end of each focus pulls, when the focus is established; this camera would ruin my movies with this micro-blinking every time you rack the focus. This was the exact problem with the video AF in Panasonic/Olympus cameras. And this used to be the problem that Sony/Canon solved with their PDAF/DPAF technology and excellently smooth wiggle-free implementation of focus pulls. Hopefully in future firmware this issue is going to be solved by Fuji. Thank you for your video, now, I know that I should watch out when buying a Fuji for videography.

    Maarten awesome videos and very informative! One of my favorite camera channels ! I would like your opinion on choosing a camera! I currently use a nikon d5500 and as car as photos i am extremely satisfied but i am getting more and more into video and i am looking to but the Sony a6500 or the fuji xt20 as i definitely want 4k and good auto focus! But Sony also has the cobtinues eye af which i love because i do a lot of portraits and also the slow motion capabilities! But i see that usually for 50-50 photo and video usage you recommend the fuji! Am i right!? Thanks a lot!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thanks for your note and your kind words, always appreciated. For video, compared to the A6500, the X-T20 comes a little short for me - unlike the X-T2, which I prefer. Fuji's eyeAF is slightly better (it finds my face, whereas Sony doesn't until I remove my glasses). For video, Fuji's continuous AF with face detect is rock solid, although Sony's continuous AF is also solid, it's face detect is less reliable.Hope this helps.

      I think that depends on the lens - the X-T20 with the XF23mmF2 is a very nice street combo, but it is more the X100F's DNA.

    Maarten. One error I noticed in your review. You said Face Detect does not work in Movie Mode. That's incorrect. Face Detect does not work in Movie Mode in 4K. However, Face Detect does work easily in all other Movie Modes (1080P). Also, unlike XT2, XT20 4K Movie mode turns off PDAF. However, XT20 1080p mode allows for PDAF. Take your XT20, switch movie type in menu to 1080p and, voila, your face detect is working and your phase detect autofocus is working.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Of those three, I'd likely choose the GX85 - the recording time in most modes is unlimited and the camera is less likely to overheat. The A6300's one advantage is a mic input - so for high quality audio you'll want to record externally and sync in post.

    A great review!
    I see that you wear glasses, as I do. I really like the X-T20, but am a little concerned how well the viewfinder works for someone wearing glasses, so any input would be appreciated. I'm also looking at the X-T2, for the larger viewfinder, but find the smaller size of the X-T20 really appealing.
    Thanks, Jim

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      Thank you for your kind and enthusiastic words. I don't remember any specific aggravation, so I'll report that it works fine - but the X-T2's viewfinder is bigger and nicer. Great Review Maarten. I wonder how the fuji engineers plan the body of a camera. I noticed your disappointment about the battery door being to close to the tripod thread hole which surely ruins many sessions when people install their RC2’s or Arca Swiss mounts “over it”. I know there are plenty of solutions with L brackets etc. but like you I’m not interested in reverting it to being a FF “Colossus”.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      That's very kind of you to say, thanks. Sometimes I think the bodies are just too small, and compromises are made the affect the usability of the camera. And truly the tripod socket is so close, no bracket or other solution would help. The small size also means the a larger lens nearly always ends up lower than the tripod plate, so it either scuffs on the plate or ends up set-balanced on the tripod. And I really didn't get why it's not centred. There aren't many Fuji usability mis-steps, but I clearly felt that was one.

    Dear Maarten, thanks for the video. I'm a street photography photographer and I'm migrating from a Dslr to Mirrorless camera as they are lighter and discreet to take pics on street, however I'm between the Xt2 and the Xt20, which would you recommend? should I go for the Xt20 and save money to invest on lenses or go for the Xt2? many thanks!

    Excellent Review! I have been using the Sony A6000 with Kit Lens since it was launched. I tried upgrading to the Sony 16 70 Zeiss but it performed worse than my kit lens. How would you rate the Fuji 18 55 Kit Lens? I am planning to get the Fuji XT20 with 18 55 as soon as its available.

      Get the XT20 with a 27mm/2.8 lens. That would be similar to X100f in some ways -small, light, near=35mm view, and will still offer much discreet shooting by titling the touchscreen and touch-focus. That's what I am thinking too, while my X100f is on wait. I might cancel X100f order and get this one.

    Hi Maarten. I am looking to buy a Fuji camera. I presently have a Nikon D90. I am considering the XT20(or upcoming XT30); X100F(or upcoming successor) or the XT3. I have been watching your various reviews. Your reviews are very thorough and helpful. Thank you for doing them :-) What is your opinion of the diopter range/viewfinders of the current models? I believe that you said in one of your other videos that you shoot without your glasses. I also wear glasses and have always shot without them. Any recommendations as to which camera offers the best and clearest view?

      Of the three I have experience with, I'd rate the X-T3 as slightly better than the X-T20, and both better than the X-T100 - but the differences are small. In any case, everyone's eyes and needs are different, and it's best if you drop by a camera store to evaluate them with your own eyes.

      Oh dear, I hope you have good medical coverage. There's no need for a mode dial if the exposure settings (aperture, shutter and ISO) have an "auto" position - so you decide what you want to control. Once you understand the concept, you wonder why any camera has a mode dial. The DOF is shown on the focus distance meter display in manual focus mode.

    I am thinking of upgrading from my entry level nikon d3300. I'm was eyeing on nikon d7200 and x-t1 (currently $800 with the huge price drop). I've been told that if I go for fujifilm, I should pay 100 more and get x-t20 instead. I am leaning more towards fujifilm than Nikon. My only concern is the battery life as the camera seems pretty tiny. My two questions are: how are the battery life on Xt1 and xt20? Would you recommend getting the xt20 over xt1? I understand that xt20 has a new sensor, new processor and etc.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +2

      Not sure what's pushing you to upgrade, but if you go for Fuji, I would recommend the X-T20 (or X-T2 - my comparison is here: ruclips.net/video/FczVOAC-ChE/видео.html
      Battery life on any mirrorless camera is much less than a DSLR - primarily because the LCD or viewfinder is always on. In liveview mode, DSLRs are about the same or slightly better as they have bigger batteries. Regardless, I'd always travel with a second (and often third battery). I would recommend the X-T20 over the X-T1, primarily because of the large improvements made to the focus engine.

    Hi Maarten: I recently bought the T-X20 based, in part, your very detailed review. No regrets except .....I cannot achieve realistic yellows, such as produced for the lemon (and orange) in the fruit bowl photos in your video. I am happy with the jpg colour reproduction for the other colours (blues, greens, reds in landscape and street-scapes) but the yellows are always pale by comparison. I've experimented with various menu settings but even with the obvious increased saturation for the (other) colours, the yellows barely change.
    Can you please advise on what settings I should try to increase the yellows, without overdoing the saturation on other colours.

      @@MaartenHeilbron Yes, it is odd as the colour reproduction on your (excellent) review is very natural, which suggests that it isn't a problem with my screen. I tried shooting a 5 different coloured cloths all placed on an outside chair with a background of green foliage and rock. I did this in bright sunlight and then in the shadows of late afternoon. I'm happy with the blues, greens, reds and browns, but the vivid yellow cloth was pale reproduction of its actual colour. I'll keep experimenting and hope that there is some combination of settings that doesn't compromise the blues etc, but provides a more saturated yellow. Thanks for the speedy response. Don

      Think I have an answer. The texture of the yellow cloth was quite fluffy, whereas the textures of the other cloths were flat eg linen tea-towels. The yellow cloth somehow reflected light in a way that fooled the X-T20 sensors into reproducing a very pale rendition of the colour that my eye detected. I tried a fruit bowl scene (very similar to yours) in daylight, but in shade, and can report that the colour rendition is very good. (The lenses were Fuji's 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses.) always my pleasure, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Compared to the X-T2, the X-T20 came up a little short for me: ruclips.net/video/FczVOAC-ChE/видео.html/ And the A6300 comes up a little short compared to the A6500 ruclips.net/video/iAkRdgnq2nY/видео.html

    Hi, i recently purchased this camera, I'm an amateur, if i wanted to produce a sharp deadpan style A0 or A1 size prints what would be the best way? I have no idea how to use and understand the dials and numbers properly at the moment. Thank you.

      fair point especially since it lacks the joystick of the X-T2.
      Still it's small 1st world problem with a rather excellent piece of kit that hits well above it's price and weight

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      It depends how much you're going to be out in the rain and snow. There are many ways to protect a non-weather proof camera.

    Which one is better in your opinion? This camera or sony A7ii?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад +1

      This feels like a very unfair comparison, unless you have very specific needs for size and price, or already have a bunch of x-mount lenses, the A7II would be the preferred choice.

    • @deri2696
      @deri2696 6 лет назад +1

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I'd take the X-T2, but if you asked me to compare with the A7RIII, I'd take that one.

    How important is weather sealing? I spend many days on the beach and I wonder if I'm going to have problems with the xt20.?!
    I know that xt2 is weather seling and very resistant but it is also much more expensive. And I have no intention of using xt20 in the rain. I hope you can help me. thank you

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      I don’t really have enough experience to say, but I would advise you to be reasonably careful. A few drops of water won’t hurt, but sand does get into everything.

  • @Feemy

    I have an XT20 and don't miss the swivel screen at all. I use my excellent Pixel 2 XL if I ever want to vlog, not that I do much vlogging. I prefer to hold a smaller device for vlogs, Not a biggie at all!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Thanks for adding your thoughts - it's good that it's not an issue for you, but for vloggers it's kind of a make or break feature.

    • @Feemy
      @Feemy 6 лет назад

      Maarten Heilbron sure. If you have a phone with horrible front facing camera then yes. However I still feel something more smaller than the XT20 (ie a smartphone) is easier to hold for long periods while vlogging.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Another valid option, however some vloggers would like a higher quality or more control of their video.

    • @Feemy
      @Feemy 6 лет назад

      Maarten Heilbron yes, depends on whether vlogging is part of your profession in order to make use of the extra quality.
      I would still buy this camera all day, every day over cameras which do have swivel screens (Panasonic G85, or Olympus offerings) because it has a bigger sensor and much better quality lenses.
      Remember, this camera has a different purpose to the others mentioned above. If you vlog A LOT (part of your profession), you choose the other offerings, obviously because of the swivel screen and also the IBIS. Different cameras for different uses

      Fujifilm has updated the firmware on the X-T1 fairly extensively. I'm not sure I can fairly compare them. I suspect the X-T20, but the X-T1 does retain some advantages in operation.

      Are you in video mode? It only works in stills mode.

      im in still mode, im using kit len 16-50. I cant select the LMO, it say "Lens Modulation Optimizer: OFF". Some said, the len itself must have LMO supported to activate this function, isn't it ?

      If the lens doesn't support LMO, then the feature is dimmed out in the menu.

    Nice review Maarten! It's hard for me to decide between this XT20 and Sony A6300. They look quite close in every feature (i watched both your reviews). I think Fuji xt20 has a better usability (menu, and manual controls look awsome!), but i've read that Fuji's raw files are more complicated to work with in post production (in Lightrooom), especially with landscape photos (my favorite genre) they give the so called "wormy artifacts". While A6300 could have a much more complicated menu but better photos to work with in post production. What do you think about that? Which one should I choose as my first mirrorless? Thank you and greetings from Italy! :)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. I think that the Lightroom issue is quite dated, that was resolved some time ago. I'm not sure that Sony's files (discounting the issue you state) are any different from Fujifilm's. I'd probably go with the X-T20, although I have and enjoy an A6300 for video shooting.

    Hello guys, need your help on choosing my first camera. Will primarily use for travel photos and occasional videos. Prices of below are the same in my country:
    Canon M50 with 15-45 kit + 22MM F2.0
    Sony a6300 with 16-50 kit
    Lumix g7 with 14-42mm kit + 25MM F1.7
    Fuji xt20 with 16-50 kit
    Add $190
    Fuji xt20 with 18-55 kit
    Will start using just jpeg. Maybe use raw in the future.
    Will appreciate any feedback. Thanks? 😉

      I'm afraid I wasn't clear. You can't set the range of the AutoISO for video. You can do full manual control of video.
