Maarten Heilbron will the photos be the same? Can you provide photos
Maarten Heilbron thanks sir! It's really a tough to decide after seeing this since I'm kinda torn between the two.
IMHO, there's no value in posting images of LCD screens.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Maarten Heilbron the xt20 will overheat in first 30 minutes during shooting 4k or hd?
Besides being so well articulated, your videos are such a joy to watch. Thanks for bringing such quality content to us :)
Thank you - although I can blushingly admit to being articulate, I'm not sure I'm flexible enough to be called articulated.
Well you could be the flipping type then ;) Cheers!
Hehe, I appreciate your sense of humour.
One of the clearest and most explicative photography video that i've ever seen. You enlighted me on so many doubt I had and definitely set a standard for camera comparisons. Thanks for your passion and effort, sir!
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thank you very much.
Maarten, always impressed by your eloquent, thoughtful, nonbiased and thoroughly professional journalism! Thank you.
It was very nice of you to take the time to comment, and I appreciate the kind words.
my X-T20 has arrived at the store, going to pick it up this afternoon :) :) :)
Enjoy!
Pre ordered.... still waiting hope to have it this weekend
Nice reviews byt the way. Oh and I'm a Montrealer too :D
Hope that works out.
Thanks, always appreciate the kind words. Sadly, however, I'm in Toronto - love to visit though - ruclips.net/video/2nvRC-HP3oo/видео.html
Genius !
Thank for the best review of these cameras
Thank you so much for your kind words, always appreciated.
Thanks so much for this comparison. All of your videos offer really in-depth analysis of the cameras being reviewed. No other camera reviewer I've seen on RUclips is as thorough!
So nice to read your very kind words. Thanks for watching and for commenting.
That is the best and most comprehensive comparison of the two cameras. You should do such videos more often; I’m sure people will appreciate. Salute to you sir !
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I agree, this was a popular title and I should do more.
A much appreciated comparison. Thank you for the video, Maarten. I am choosing between these two right now. My main consideration is the physical size and how it fits in the hand. Also the viewfinder has to be good enough. So I am choosing mainly based on ergonomics. Waiting to actually hold an X-T20 before I decide.
Always nice to hear that my videos are appreciated. Having one in your hand is definitely the best way to make a decision.
Your reviews are always appreciated
Thanks for your kind words.
Basically it comes down to price and needs. You want the smaller brother that can perform extremely well...or you want the bigger brother that performs extremely well but has that extra boost to add a bit more performance. Thanks Maarten as always. I probably would use the XT20 or X100F solely for b/w shooting. I am happy with my XT2 and 18-135mm lens. After 6 years using compact cameras I made the leap and now I shoot manual constantly and the learning process of the XT2 keeps amazing me. The XT2 will outperform most cameras.
Always my pleasure - thank you for your kind words. Shooting in b/w using Acros mode is one of my highlights with Fuji models - while I rarely think about b/w with other brands. And I completely agree - I've been shooting with the X-T2 since June, and am really loving it, particularly for video.
This has to be one of the best videos on the topic. , No nonsense, straight to the point and no cringy jokes.
That's very kind of you to say, thank you very much.
Thinking about upgrading from the xt10. You got me to buy that one and now you are bringing me over the edge to get the 20. Love your video style. Thanks Maarten.
Have a look at the X-S10 ruclips.net/video/wmomwFw5yWg/видео.html
Unlike the X-T2 which crops the sensor by 1.17x, the X-T20 doesn’t crop while recording 4K. This means that the new camera doesn’t perform full pixel readout but rather applies line skipping. As such the X-T20 should have less sharpness and more aliasing in comparison to the flagship camera.
An interesting detail, thanks for adding this.
Vantage1987 - I've read the 1.17 crop and full sensor readout in 4k for the X-T2, but if I may ask, where are you getting your information on the X-T20 not having a full pixel readout? I'm not doubting you, but we're talking about a camera that is still in beta version.
I received a production model from Fuji, I have confirmed this information with them.
Maarten Heilbron - Interesting! I appreciate the information!
Always my pleasure.
Preordered my X-T20 the other day, so thank u so much for this video.Your reviews are great :) Keep up the good work.
A pleasure to read your kind words, thank you.
Oh wow. I could not have asked for a video more relevant to what I needed right now! Absolutely perfect video. Thank you Maarten.
Always a pleasure to know I've provided useful information.
another fantastic video maarten. You always make wonderful videos. I have purchased 4 camera's in the past thanks to your videos.
Thank you for taking the time to make them.
Glad to hear I've been able to help, and I appreciate the kind words. A small suggestion - slow down on the shopping and do more shooting.
Thanks for the comparison Maarten. Super detailed and very easy to understand. You've got talent. I'm now a subscriber. Keep up the great work!
It's my pleasure - and thank you for your kind words, and your subscription.
The most comprehensive comparison of the two cameras I've seen. Thank you!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
This was an extremely in depth and useful comparison. Thanks so much for all the work. Great video!
It's a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks very much for commenting.
Fantastic as always. Excellent comparative video demonstrating all the functions. Hope to jump into the Fuji world soon! Keep up the wonderful work.
That's very kind, thanks for commenting, appreciated.
Another fabulous review Maarten! Thank you! I had the X-T1 and have the X-T10. I enjoy the carry weight of the X-T10. I also like the built-in popup flash for those times where fill flash is needed. The X-T2, would seem better if you plan to have some of the larger lenses. I will get either the X-T20 or X-T2. Undecided, but leaning to the X-T20 for the carry weight and the touch screen seems like a nice thought.
I appreciate the kind words, and thank for sharing your experiences and thoughts.
Fantastic review. I have watched so many reviews that imply that the x-t20 is as good as the x-t2 but cheaper. This review eloquently points out some major differences in the specs. I Am now sold on the x-t2. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words, it's great to know that my videos are helpful and useful.
Am I the only one who actually prefers the XT20?! Would rather buy this and a 35 f2 prime than just an XT2.
You are not. That's a great combination.
Hi Maarten, I enjoy your video comparison. The reason why I like the XT2 is the weather proofing. Living in Canada I want to be able to use it during winter too. But the price is still beyond my reach. I really wish I could afford it before I go to Hawaii in August 2017. I liked the XT20 because of the touch screen, unless I hear further convincing from your reviews that I should go for the XT20 will be appreciated. :)
My detailed X-T20 review is here: ruclips.net/video/seokdJwXjTs/видео.html
My detailed X-T2 review will be online ("drops" if you speak under 30) on Thursday.
Very informative video. Which do you suggest for vlogging? Which is easier to ise for travel? Thank you.
The X-T20 is better for travel, as it's smaller. Neither is a great choice for vlogging as the screen doesn't swivel forward. Try the X-T100 (unless you need to log in 4K, at which point you'll need to look at other brands).
Hi, Nice review. I want your opinion on what to buy X-T1 or X-T20? because both are in same price range these days. I mostly shoot landscapes and portraits. thanks in advance. I am moving from nikon D5200 to fuji.
Thanks for the kind words. If you're shooting video, want a better/faster autofocus or prefer a smaller body, take the X-T20, otherwise, it's the X-T1.
Hi Maarten, excellent comparison! I may have missed it, but you were running the frame rate and buffer size tests, what file type were you using, Fine JPEG, Raw, or both? If those numbers are shooting Raw, then that's fantastic! Thanks again for a great video.
Never mind, I've just played back and heard you mention Fine JPEG on the video - would you know what the numbers would be for Raw shooting?
I appreciate the kind words. Yup, fine JPEGs. I did try RAW by accident, and it's clearly much less (didn't take notes). Most cameras are very disappointing on RAW burst.
Wow what a timeless review. Kudos to the effort put.
I appreciate your very kind words, thanks!!
How nice review is here !!
It is very difficult to make a decision.... I'm also considering 'Sony rx100 mk5' and 'Fuji X100F'
I appreciate the kind words, thanks! Depending on your specific "must-have" features, they might both be a little less than these two.
Another amazing review/comparison. Best reviews on youtube. Quick question. Does the C-AF perform as well as the X-T2?
That's very kind, thanks! Yes, or better, if you want face detection in continuous high speed burst. However, the optional sixth adjustable C-AF panel is missing, as demonstrated in the video.
Hello Maarten,
Many thanks for your nice videos on X-T20, So tempting that I found myself buying one last week. I am also from Toronto, do you organize any group shooting or suggest one? Cheers!
That's very kind of you, thanks. I had t thought about - but ping me again in September and we can organize something. In the meantime, there are several interesting Toronto photography Meetups.
You, sir, are my hero of the day. Thank you so much for this very detailed, no-nonsense comparison of the two cameras.
On a more personal note: with a name like "Maarten Heilbron", surely your ancestors are Dutch. Heb ik gelijk? :)
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment. Inderdaad, ik was in Amsterdam gebooren.
Not that difficult if you are pro or enthusiast the weather sealing, bigger viewfinder, ISO-setting with lockable dials on top, dual memory card slots, optional batterigrip will probarbly brake the deal.
Adjusting for shutterspeed, ISO and exporsure compensation with dials on top with good all other feeling is great together with aperture on the lens is as Old School it gets in good sens of meaning with X-T2.
But if you are not burning passionate or don't think you will become later on the X-T20 will give really a lot more than the big brand entry level DSLR cameras especially if you consider the super line of optimized Fujinon XF lenses and upgrade the kit-zoomlens to a prime std 35 f/2 to start with. Learn to control exporsure and depth of field and you soon you will be hooked.
Interesting thoughts, thanks for sharing - you've summed up my feelings nicely.
The two UHS-II SD Slots and the battery grip seals the deal on the XT-2 for me.
Yup, I'm with you on this one.
very good comparison, after seeing this, as a beginner, I found little reason to choose X-T2, almost the same config and control but huge price difference...50% in HK!!! are there any great difference in image quality, dynamic range, sharpness in 4K?with a same sensor?
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. As the sensor is the same, those parameters should be nearly identical - but I leave that detail quality analysis to dxomark and dpreview.
Love your reviews, very informative and relaxing to watch. Looking forward to the X-T3 vs X-T30 review soon
That’s very kind of you to say, I’m looking forward to that too!
You forgot to mention the ergonomics. Before holding them both I was leaning towards the XT20. But after playing around with them it's XT2 all the way....
I thought I did ... the X-T2 is larger and has larger grips front and back. As the X-T20 is smaller and lighter, I find that holding/carrying them feels about the same, in each case, it seems to be the right configuration for the camera.
I just bought an XT-20 with the XC 16-50 mm and XC 50-230 mm telephoto lenses all for $800 [all new...not preowned]. I thought that was a great deal.
I wanted the XT-3 but economics kicked in. I would be spending at least 3 times the price for the XT-3 with the same lenses.
What do you guys think about the XT-20 and the lenses [lower end lenses not as good as the XF series] that I got. Did I make a good choice....I'm not a professional photographer...just learning now.
Don't know a lot about photography yet but hope I made a good choice.
It does sound like a good deal. Even Fujifilm's less expensive lenses are better than average. It sounds like a great kit for a novice.
Please tell me Maarten, whether the AF system from X-T2 is more accurate and faster then AF in X-T20 or are them the same? I need second body for wedding photography *only for photo shooting). Is there any sense to add extra cash for x-t2.
Except for the detail on continuous auto focus settings I mentioned, there does not seem to be any difference in performance.
Very nice review.
how's the performance for touch focus when recording video? compared to Canon's Dual Pixel or Sony's Lock-on focus? Thanks!
In my opinion, not as good.
I think it's gonna take a while before other companies beat Dual Pixel. Unless they steal it some how, of course.
While there are measurable differences, they're pretty much imperceptible to most photographers. Personally haven't seen much difference between the latest Sony AF systems and the Canon.
Thanks for the comparison. Does the touch screen allow dragging the focus point while using the viewfinder? (as in panasonic for example).
Thanks for the kind words. You can touch and change focus while recording - and even change the touch focus mode, but it doesn't drag like the Panasonic - although personally I don't see the usefulness of this.
***** Thank you for the reply. I was interested in whether touch can be used while viewing through the viewfinder when the monitor is off.
My pleasure. It can not (it's a trick that Sony manages on the A6500 though - but it can only focus, not shoot).
Hi Maarten, just watched a couple of your videos avbout the x-t20 ..most informative. Two questions I see a lot of posts saying the x-t20 is uncomfortable to use with glasses ? ( yet you seem to get on fine and yours are the pretty similar to mine ) Also my choice is the x-t20 vs the xt1 , any words of wisdom on that ?! many thanks Simon
I didn't (don't) find that - but I often remove my glasses, as that's more comfortable for me. If your prescription is large, you may not be able to see all the edges of the screen at a glance.
Hello Maaren, I've just discovered a new difference between the x-t20 and the x-t2.
The x-t2 has 169 phase detection points, but the x-t20 has 91. Does it make a big difference in tracking/focus?
That's interesting - what is the source of this information?
Hello Maarten,
Actually is very confusing.
www.fujifilm.com/news/n170119_03.html
The number of focusing points has been dramatically expanded from 49 in the previous model to 91 (up to 325 points).
I looked at the x-t20 specs on fujifilm:
www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujifilm_x_t20/specifications/
Zone AF: 3x3 / 5x5 / 7x7 from 91 areas on 13x7 grid
But It said the same thing on the x-t2.
I checked on your video that the gred is 13x13 ^^.
I'm confused.
From those numbers, there is clearly some confusion - but on screen, and in terms of performance, they seem to be the same.
informative, comprehensive, and efficient. Quality content perfection.
Thanks for your kind words, they are appreciated.
Hi Maarten, great comparison between the two Fuji cameras. I am looking to add a camera to my kit as a backup and also as a grab and go. Would appreciate your views on this. I have xt2 with 16 f1.4, 35 f2, 56 f1.2 and the 18-55 kit lens. I'm torn between Option 1 the x100f which would give me the added fixed 23 f2 fixed as another camera and lens. Option 2 the xt20 with the ability to use all my existing lenses. Or finally Option 3 stick with what I'm familiar with and splash the cash and get a second xt2 to complete the kit? I'm getting to the stage that every option has its own merits and it's so hard to decide. Just wondering if you could take time out to give your thoughts
Wish I could help, they all sound like worthwhile options - only you know what your needs are and how the various solutions will solve them.
I heard 4K recording on the XT20 uses line skipping while XT2 down scales from a full sensor readout I think. A moire comparison would be interesting here.
Yes, that's more or less correct - didn't realize it at the time I did the review, but a viewer pointed that out. I will include that in my full review. The detail is the X-T2 crops (1.17) to match the sensor readout more exactly to the resolution/aspect ratio.
Hi Maarteen!
Can we change iso on the xt20 by setting it on A on the top dial, and tuning it from the little front dial by customising this dial in the menu?
Like on the x100f...?
Important for me
Can you check that, please
Thanks, great review as usually
Chris
Kind words are always appreciated. Best way to set the ISO on the X-T20 (as there is no ISO dial) is to assign it to the rear command dial. Then just press and turn.
Hello sir, thank you for sharing wonderful information with us. Your comment about both camera influence me buy one of this. However, some people share their experience about fuji xt20 and explain LCD screen behave weird. did you experience such issue with this camera ?
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. I'm not sure what you mean by weird, but I did not observe any odd behaviours or display issues on the X-T20.
You can never practically have an aperture ring on a variable aperture lens. That just makes sense. Nice review. I am going to get an X-T20. Sometimes I just need something small for travel, and the D500 ad 750 are wonderful but big.
Thanks father kind words. While that seems true, I have encountered some lenses that do have a ramped aperture and aperture markings. I think the X-T20, with the kit lens, makes an ideal travel companion, and certainly help cut down on your "lugg"-age.
Great review! Does the auto ISO work while recording video on both camera?
I appreciate the kind words. On both, AutoISO can be selected in video, but parameters can't be set. It does make adjustments while recording, but there is no on-screen indication of the current setting.
So at 9:02 this mentioned Image Stabilisation. I assume this is referring to the kit lens, as the camera doesn't have IS fro what I gather? I have a selection of primes - which don't have IS either. I'm curious of this menu goes away when you remove the kit lens.
Yes, that's correct. Only some Fuji lenses have OiS, and they have a switch on the lens to turn it on/off. This is additional control provided thought the menu.Yes, this setting is not available when a non-OIS lens is attached.
Maarten Heilbron thanks. Good to know. I'll have to play round with those different options when my camera arrives.
Right. Note that the menu is also dimmed out when the OIS on the lens is switched off.
Do you think getting an xt2 now is still future proof or a good value? It's currently in the being sold for about 1k, but I know the XT3 is coming out in a few months.
I think it is, but I cannot predict the future, and what features you might find appealing in a new model.
Great points and still relevant today 3 years later as there's still much debate over which is 'Best'. For me the most important benefit of the X-T20 is it doesn't Crop in 4k. This relates to More Bang for Buck when we consider Lenses are the greatest cost consideration after camera body.
I had the X-T2 and loved it. I now have the X-T20 and find myself missing the bigger size of the X-T2. Boy I thought the X-t2 was small after moving from DSLR, the X-T20 is Tiny and cramps my hands.
If i had to nail down the benefits of the two I'd say the X-T20 for 'no crop in 4k' and the touch screen which is Great for Live recording if you need a quick focus change.
All other things considered, the X-T2 simply for Size and the ability to add a grip.
Thanks for adding your thoughts, appreciated.
Dear Maarten,
Thanks for the thorough review. On the fence between XT2 and XT20. I am interested in HSS without fancy adapters. I have a HSS capable monolight. My question is can I do HSS through XT2 PCSync port?
Yes, you may need a Fuji flash - Fuji guy Billy explained it to me in this video: ruclips.net/video/IX1-ilFIVdY/видео.html
Hello, Nice review,
May I ask , do you think it is worthy for an amateur customer to buy a better quality made in JP X-t2 for USD$430. Or shall I spend the price different on a lens which can be used for a longer time (camera body has short lifespan , like 3-5 yrs)
I appreciate the kind words - and you are absolutely correct - invested in good lenses is a better plan than buying a pricey camera. That said, the X-T2 is a great camera.
Thank you so much Mr. Heilbron,
Then, I would like to buy X-T20 with metal grip which fulfils what I need and is $430 cheaper than X-T2 in my country.
Always my pleasure, sounds like a good plan.
Do you know if the X-T20 enables the image tweaks in video record? Image tweaks being; highlight tone, shadow tone, color, sharpness and noise reduction?
Yes, both the X-T20 and X-T2 have highlight, shadow, colour and sharpness controls available in video. Not noise reduction. I'll demo this in my X-T20 review.
For a beginner photographer is the X-T20 or X-T2 easier to operate and navigate settings in learning photography?
Thanks depends on your intentions. If you'd like to be hands-off and let the camera do the work, and only sometimes make manual adjustments, the X-T20. On the other hand, if you'd like to be more involved in making the decisions about an image, the X-T2.
Hi Maarten. Thanks again for this comparison video. I would like to know whether is there any in-camera photo stacking or focus after taking picture in xt 20?
There is not, but it's pretty easy in photoshop - Adobe and others have excellent guides.
Very well presented and informative. (:
You've found a subscriber in me.
It's always great to find someone else out there willing to inform.
I will add that the choice between them is one of the toughest out there if you can spring for the X T2. Like.... Should I get the X T20 with kit lens + 55 to 200 + 56 f1.2? Should I rather go for the X T2 + grip + kit lens + 55 to 200 and just hold off on the 56 f1.2? I could slap a Samyang/Rokinon 85mm f1.4 for pretty cheap if I can't do with out crazy bokeh and that would let me get the X T2 for just 200 dollars more.... ah....
It seems like it'll just depend on which one isn't back ordered at the time I can buy one. xD
Once you start throwing all those variables into the air, it's a very tough decision, particularly if you're mostly shooting stills. For video, I find the choice a little clearer, particularly with the battery grip, the XC-T2 is a more capable camera.
I think that they're meant to be a pair. A and B. I think that if you have the money the smart thing to do is get the Fuji X T2. In my case, I can hold off on autofocus bokeh lenses as I'm not a portrait photographer, and I use such lenses for night life and indoors purposes mostly. The kit zoom + 55 to 200 cover the focal length twice. And what's more is I wouldn't even have to do without a fast prime. Rokinon 85mm f1.4 is 260 USD. I think the X T2 is gonna be a better long term investment for me.
I would agree with that assessment. Over the 7 months I've been shooting with it, I've found it to be very versatile and usable. Thanks again for your comments.
Thank you for being so responsive. (:
Don't encourage me too much though, as I am quite opinionated and can talk about cameras for quite a while if unchecked. x.x
=p
Oh! I like the photo quality of Fujifilm X series, I may be get Canon EOS M5 or Fujifilm X-t20 which one should I get? I love to shoot photos mostly my pet, natures like mountains etc., which camera gives better photo quality and easy to navigate the settings?
My preference and recommendation would be the X-T20, which I find simpler to operate.
Thank you! I will get X-T20 this November.
Always nice to hear I could help.
Hi Mr. Maarten Heilbron,
I'm interest on the Digital Split Focus for these two camera. Because I not found the details in any pages talk about XT20.
Can you explain or show me the difference?
Thanks a lot. :)
The image appears in several bands and you move the focus ring on the lens until there is no longer a "split" in the image. You'll see this demonstrated in my X-T2 V2 review, which will be next week's post. My preference remains the expanded view mode, which Fuji calls "standard".
Ok, understood.Thanks your reply .
I will follow your new post.
Thanks for your every sharing :)
Nice day.
Always my pleasure. Best wishes.
As a complete noob in photo shooting - but I've been learning for the last 3 weeks (but without having a camera), which one would you recommend? X-T2 or X-T20? which one would be a better long term investment? Or is there another camera with other brands?
There are lots of cameras. I'd pick the X-T2, it's the more robust camera with more features, and has the invaluable (for video anyway) battery pack accessory. The other camera I'd consider is the X-H1 or the Sony A7 III - I'm hoping to do a comparison of those two soon.
Maarten Heilbron looking forward for your comparison video!
Thanks for your interest.
I wonder if the body of X-T2 is full metal (aluminum body) my X-T10 felt on the floor and split in Half, totally lost, exactly where the metal joins the plastic part of the body, It´s a very week camera and X-t20 looks the same. But the lens XF 18-55 that was attached to the camera when I dropped, looks like nothing happens, only with few scratches on the hood.
I wish I had an answer to your question - but it was interesting to hear of your experiences.
Interesting, I've dropped my X-T10 twice. The first time the original strap came loose and the second time it flew out of my bag with quite some force. No issues whatsoever, except that I bent the plastic around the screen. Often it really comes down to luck. I've been lucky so far.
@@Dunnoxer I hope that either your luck improves (and that you don't drop it again) or that it continues and there is no significant damage when it falls again. Not sure which is the better wish.
Wow! A really useful, comprehensive comparison. Well done!
Thank you for posting your kind words.
Good review, but why do nearly all camera reviewers say"price point" instead of "price"?
I appreciate the kind words, I'll make it a point to stop tying those two words together unnecessarily.
fujifilm xt20 or panasonic gx85? for photography and video
I haven't reviewed the GX85, so don't feel qualified to advise.
Viewfinder is deal breaker for me on choosing XT20. I wear Reading glasses and has found XT20 very difficult to use even with diopter adjustment. XT2 on other hand is not having this problem.
Glad you were able to find a camera to meet your needs, the X-T2 is an excellent choice.
Mr Maarten, I would like to ask you about... Using the XT-2, two or three times till now, it has happened as I was using the camera to "freeze" completely, I mean I was seeing the last photo I shot and then nothing else, everything stuck, no pushing, no turning dials changed anything. Only solution I found was to open the battery case and take the battery out and cut the power, since even when I turned the camera off, the image, the "freeze" was still there. My question is, has anything like that happened to you up to now using XT-2? Is this something that happpens sometimes or should I worry. It has happened two or three times and I have not used the camera that much. And I do ask that cause I never owned a camera like this before. Thank you for your time.
Clearly that is something that should not happen, and I don't believe has happened to me. I say "believe" because I do accept some general faultiness in electronics, so if it happens once or twice it doesn't register, and because I'm using so many cameras, I don't always remember which it might have happened to. And this kind of this has happened to me - and generally I just do what you likely did - turn it off, remove the battery, etc. until it works again.
In any case, that's a problem that you should contact your dealer or Fuji about.
Thank you for your response Mr Marteen! It is the second or third time that happened (not sure) since I got the camera mid of last November. I do not use it that often... First time it happened I called my dealer (an a excellent gentleman) and he told me that it might happen since these cameras have high end electronics (or something like that) but it is very rare in that kind and line (and price) of a camera to have that kind of a problem, but you never know, right?. To be honest I just worry if it might happen when I have the grip and it is difficult to just take tha grip off in order to "defreeze" the camera by taking the battery off, especially if you are pressed about time. Or maybe I am too worry for something that happens occasionally to everyone and maybe I should just enjoy the camera and be creative with it as I should!!! Thank you Mr Marteen, I hope for your review or best settings for video (and photo) on the Fuji XT-2.
Always my pleasure. I'll keep my eye out for this, and keep you posted. I'm hoping for that review too ...
There is another huge difference nobody talks about. On XT2 in CH mode Face Detection is unavailable. The explanation commonly given is that XT2 of course cannot have PDAF and Face Detect at the same time, if you want Face Detect, XT2 reverts back to Contrast AF. However, on my XT20, Face Detect is available with CH!!!!! I don't know if it means that Fuji finally figured out how to have PDAF and Face Detect at the same time, but the fact remains.
Thanks - good call. IN CH the face detect menu isn't available on the X-T2, on the X-T20, it is!
Which begs the next question, does it mean that on Fuji XT20, in CH, the camera can track faces with full PDAF????? This needs to be investigated.
I'm working on my full review - I'll test that out this week. And thanks again for finding this detail, always appreciated.
Quick question and thanks again for a great video.
Hello I recently tried a side by side comparison shoot in store with these cameras. It did not go exactly as I planned. The xt2 had way better depth of field than the 20, both using the 35mm @f2.
Is this at all possible or would have have been my error? I was thinking maybe a different processor/software when making Jpegs? I assume my error. I purchaseda Sony a7rii for it'ssise and quality, but the glass makes it not as compact as I hoped.
Thanks, I do appreciate your kind words.
That seems like a defiance of the physics involved - the same lens on the same sensor should yield the same results (if the aperture is the same). And the bokeh should be the same in JPEG and RAW images - it's just the physics of the light falling on the sensor, it's not any processing.
The size/weight advantage of mirrorless is diminished in full frame bodies with high quality lenses - that is an accurate observation.
Thank you for your reply and clarification. I was hoping you would say that, otherwise I would still be one confused consumer. This investigation and new found love for fuji film bodies started weeks ago. I was away with a friend who uses a xt1 and me, an A7Rii. I tried to replicate shots using different lenses and aperatures of course as best as I could. I found that his few hundred dollar kit destroyed my few thousand dollar kit in terms of appealing looking photographs and fall off. Fuji photos taken were with the 35mm @f2 and mine were with the Sony Zeiss 35 f1.8. Trying to keep the same field of view the sensors were at different distances because of their difference in size but I was sure that my FF f1.8 would have a more appealing DOF but the fujifilm killed my A7Rii! ever since then I have assumed the the fujifilm body processes the image to be more attractive. I will do a comprehensive test without any alcohol consumption soon and send you a link to my findings. If the Fuji does perform miracles I will let you know. Thank you for your previous quick reply and constantly helping people with your hard work.
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. I do look forward to your comparisons.
Thanks good comparison. I have the 2 and thinking of getting the 20 as a spare body for my travels.
I appreciate the kind words, sounds like a good plan to me.
i might be late reply but i own xt2 for pro use and xt20 as backup and for quick shooting and i dont regret having them both
I wouldn't have regrets either.
Maarten what's your go to camera for daily shooting nowadays?
For most things, I take the X-T2 with the 16-55. If I'm shooting on a gimbal, or recording macro closeups of camera dials, I shoot with the A6300. However, as I'm nearly always reviewing a camera - that's what goes out the door with me.
@@MaartenHeilbron nice! thanks for the replies.
As long as your comment is civil and/or your question is relevant, you will get a reply from me.
@@MaartenHeilbron makes sense to me!
Super thorough and helpful! Thank you for posting this.
So kind of you to say - thanks for taking the time to comment.
Which one would you go with at a $340USD price difference? I'm conflicted!
The X-T2.
Great comparison, thanks for your work!
+Alexander V always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
Hi Marteen, thank you for the detailed comparison. I have a question about the viewfinder: here in Germany I have no chance to put an X-T2 in my hands, but I handled an X-T20. (Premise: I've been shooting dSLR for more than a decade) No matter all the positive opinions about the EVF, I found it disappointing on the X-T20. Perhaps because of the neither-low-nor-high light in the store - I noticed the frame rate wasn't so great and there was a very noticeable "ghost trail" effect of one or more pixels when panning the camera. Is this true also for the X-T2? How's the X-T2 EVF in boost mode and low light conditions?
Thanks for the kind words. Although the X-T2 is better, in low light you'll see the same issues - the frame rate slows in order to have enough light to illuminate the image.
Good to know, Thanks for your reply! It seems like the even the best EVFs today have some trade-offs...
They're getting better though ...
Outstanding comparison, thank you very much.
That's very kind of you to say, thank you!
Good review ,but what's a price point ?
For up-to-date U$ pricing of the
Fuji X-T20 kit at B&H: bhpho.to/2mbm4er
Fuji X-T2 kit at B&H: bhpho.to/2mg7pf3
Fujinon XF16-55 lens at B&H: bhpho.to/2mfYEkW
Hope this helps.
Maarten Heilbron I was referring to the expression " price point".Don't you mean " price" ?
Oh, I see. Didn't get it before you added quotes. Thanks, I'll try to be more precise in future and avoid unnecessary jargon. Thanks for your guidance, always nice to know my viewers have my back.
Thanks for replying and your great reviews
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
I'm about to buy my first ever camera and I'm torn between Fuji X-T2 or Sony A6500...
Should be easy - the X-T2 is the nicer camera to use. The Sony may have more features, but is more challenging. The physical controls on the X-T2 make it easier to master.
Does the xt-20 incluye bulb mode for long exposures? I mean, more than 30 seconds...
Both the X-T20 and X-T2 have a B position on the shutter speed dial for bulb exposure.
Maarten Heilbron thank you for answering! ;-).
Always my pleasure.
Great work Mr Maarten.Thorough and to the point, as always! I do not know if a review of the XT2 is still possible. but a best settings to shoot video with the XT2 would be great. Also, since you do come in contact with Fuji people, have you heard anything about them creating a "video friendly" lense? My best...
Always nice to hear from you, thanks for the kind words. Yes, still possible ... I'm doing a X-T20 video next week, might do X-T2 at the same time. After this week's announcement of the e-mount Fujinon lenses, they indicated that the x-mount versions (the e-mount is fully manual, the x-mount won't be) is likely a 2018 release.
Thank you for your answers. Looking forward to a video for the xt2!
Thanks for your patience.
according to some comments and your response, the xt20 doesn't shoot 4k as well as the xt2?
There are some technical reasons why this might be true, but it's hard to quantify or demonstrate. I'm working on a full review of the X-T20 and will include this issue.
No scene modes on the x-2? I was sold on the x-T2 till I heard that in video. I like that feature
I think you'll find that the A setting (for shutter, aperture and ISO) will provide nearly the same results.
Can anyone comment on the accuracy of the XT20 AF when you touch the LCD to focus and shoot simultaneously? Which camera is faster/more accurate to focus just using the LCD? I want to buy one of these cameras for street photography with the Fuji 23mm f2 WR lens. My preference is for the XT20 but if the AF touch to focus/shoot is not accurate I may opt for the more pro camera and use the joystick to select focus point and then press shutter. Any advice?
It's as accurate as a human finger can be using a 3 inch screen. For street (or any kind of photography) you'll find that using the touch screen is slow and not as responsive as pressing the shutter. Or do what the famous street photographers of the last millennium did - use a smaller aperture (F8-11) and preset a manual focus to a middle/close distance. For street you're always better off with a small unobtrusive camera, like the X-T20.
Does the XT20 do the tethering via USB?
Thank you.
Although added as a firmware upgrade to the X-T2, Fujifilm has confirmed this will not happen on the X-T20.
Thank you very much.
Right on point ! No bullshit , only useful and extended information. Hope to see more videos like this from you. Thank you , Sir !
Thanks. There are already lots more videos exactly like that from me. However, if there's a specific model or issue that interests you, please let me know.
Is X-T20 made in Japan?
Thanks for this Video, have been waiting for a comparison between the two...
aaaandd...First :D
Always a pleasure to read that I've provided content viewers were interested in. So thanks for the kind words, and for being first.:-)
Great review as always:)
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciated.
Love your channel Maarten, greetings from Sweden!
Glad you enjoy it, and a pleasure to read your kind words. Please say hello (safely) to all my friends in Sweden.
Maarten, which one of these cameras would you take on a vacation for your primary carry camera? Say a tour of Italy or Ireland for example. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
Or France? I'd take the X-T2, with (if only one lens) the 16-55 - slightly heavier yes, but better balanced with that lens and (as I shoot video too) I'd also take the battery grip. For smaller, lighter (and staying with APS-C and Fuji) the X-100F.
Yes, France too. You're reading my mind. I almost said France. Okay, this isn't the gear I thought you would say. So you would carry 2 cameras, (one for smaller and lighter). Seems like a lot of gear for the bag. if you could otherwise carry one size fits all. Unless you feel the 16 - 55 is far superior in image quality to the 18 - 55 and the balance of the camera would be awkward with the 16 - 55 on the X-T20. Thank you for the prompt reply! .
I did carry the X-T2 around Paris (that's why I threw France in) for two weeks last summer, and was happy I did (of course, the X-T20 wasn't available).
I wasn't suggesting that you'd take two (although if you're travelling with your partner, and they'd like a camera, then you're not carrying the X-100F, but it's always available, if you get my drift ...). The 16-55 is clearly a superior lens, although as kit lenses go, the 18-55 is above average, and it's much better balanced on the X-T20. The 16-55 kind of topples the X-T20 over, and makes it much less comfortable to carry - although that was based on a fairly short review period.
We are traveling to Paris later this year and probably France along the way. I plan to get the X-T2 soon. Although, it seems that Fuji is moving backwards. Their claim to fame was lighter than DSLR, now the X-T2 is larger and heavier than the X-T1, and they want you to add the battery grip for full functionality - and still not up to par with the focusing speed of the Canon 7D. I'm committed to Fuji, and enjoy the style and hardware, so plan to stick with them, for now. Thank you for your thoughts. You have helped me to make up my mind. I still have the X-T10. Not sure if I will keep or sell it.
While your comments are true - I would like to comment on focussing speed. In my experience, as long as a camera has phase detect (which eliminates the back and forth focus hunting) it's fast and I have trouble experiencing the minute differences. I really thought Fuji's focus (back in the X-T1 days - and it was the best of the bunch) was poor.
Now it's as good as any. In fact, there are not many cameras where I can rely on the AF-C mode to find and hold focus on a talking subject without an occasional confirming focus check - but the X-T2 does hold steady, in spite of the fact that in 4K video mode, there's no face detect. And thanks for the kind words, always glad to exchange ideas.
Very good, as ever! Thank you Maarten!
Always a pleasure to read kind words from my viewers - thanks!
Outstanding explanation of the cameras.
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Excellent comparison, thank you, although I am still torn between the two
Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to comment.
This is really helpful! Thanks, Maarten!
Always happy to hear that I've been able to assist, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thank you so much for this! Very comprehensive and helpful :)
Always happy to hear my content is appreciated, thanks for the kind words.
can you assign the iso control to a command dial on the xt-20?
Yes - it can be assigned to the back command dial, push to activate, turn to set. I find this quite useful. That customization is not available on the X-T2, where it might be nice to have it on the back command dial where it can be set with the eye in the viewfinder. Otherwise, getting your left hand over to the ISO dial is a bit more complicated.
You can assign ISO control to any customizable button. I prefer the front wheel.
You can assign ISO control to appear on-screen with any customizable button. The front command dial is not customizable on the X-T20. (If I'm wrong here - please include the exact menu settings required to access this customization.)
Neither command dial is customizable on the X-T2.
When assigned to the X-T20's rear dial, the ISO can be changed interactively.
brilliant review just what I needed
xt2 I think for me. cheers
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated.
Are fuji camera (xt3, xt20) straps (included) made of leather?
In general, they are not. However, leather lenses are available from lots of vendors.
Actually, I am a vegan, so that could be a deal breaker from me. In a lot of unboxings they say it is made of leather. I hope you understand.
I completely understand. My Fujifilm Canada contact assures me that there is no leather used in Fujifilm straps.
Thanks a lot, again.
Always happy to help.
