No need to hold down the ae-l button. Just press it and release, and it will lock until you hit it again or release the shutter. Also the single point focus can be combined with the metering so that it focuses and meters in the same point. If that setup is chosen, the q menu has a different bottom left option than what you show. Great video!

You can put the shutter dial in "T" and change them by 1/3 via dials. I measure exposure in manual mode

This was a good dive into metering, thanks! I had my X-T1 on multi for years and never changed it because I mostly did outdoor photography. However, I just got my X-T20 a month ago and took some indoor/outdoor photos using the 56mm portrait lens and totally got into problems with background light from the windows. I forced my way through it with a flash and exp comp-but the spot metering seems very useful for the situation when I want to use the natural light.
I will say my one tip on the X-T20 is that when I turn the exp comp dial my fingers keep hitting the Fn button , so I now keep the exp comp dial on "C" and use the front dial to choose my exp comp. One issue that took me a while to figure out with my pancake lens was that when I press the front dial, it toggles between custom exp comp and aperture (or shutter speed depending on the "command dial setting").

Thanks Omar, I have been following for quite a while, this will be my first comment. I just upgraded to the X T3 from the X T20, and suddenly metering became a whole lot more important for some reason. This has clarified a few things for me that I just wasn't understanding before. As for "you are smarter than your camera", well I think that may be debatable!

Omar, if you want to shoot Manual, just put the shutter dial on T position. You will get full control over you shutter speed from 1/8000s to 30sec. It works on the XE2/XT1/ XT2 and it should be the same on the XT20, it was part of one update done by Fuji.

    • @ogonzilla

Manual focus mode with the back button auto focus (!?) and the shutter dial in "T" to allow all 1/3 stop shutter speeds using the rear thumb dial is how I shoot 99% of the time. Yeah, I love the retro look and that old school shutter dial there, but using T and the thumb wheel is just to friggin' fast not to use. It's natural, like using the old aperture dials of my older cameras, mixed with the 1/3 stop shutter speed accuracy of the modern cameras. This method of control was a big help when I switched from Nikon, quickening the adjustment to Fuji's way of getting the job done.

I also use full manual, but set the real command dial to SS with the dedicated dial set to T. This way it's like a manual DSLR and you can adjust in 1/3 increments

Very nice! A couple of things, I don't have a Fuji lens at the moment, I shoot with all manual lenses, but in any metering mode, multi, center weighted, ETC, how the camera meters would be relative to where the focus point is located, no? Meaning, if you move that focus point to the far left of the screen towards a blown out window, it would meter differently than if it were at the opposite side of the screen? Lastly, you definitely have compensation in MF mode, just set your top dails to "T" on the shutter, and "C" on the compensation, then go into the Setup-button dial setting-command dial setting, and set that to the bottom hit - SSF. Now pressing in on the front command dial will select shutter speed, press in again, now you control the compensation!

Hi, this is something that I just recently found out too after owning the X-T20 for a month. If you want to quickly set the functions for your functions buttons, you can do so by pressing the display back button until the menu comes out. It's way quicker to go into the menu and to the wrench to adjust your functions buttons. Hope this helps.

  • @MagnusHedemark

For the fine grained shutter speeds, you can use the command dial on many of the Fujis. Set your shutter dial to T... then fine-grain shutter speed adjustments are made with the rear command dial, and ISO on the front dial. I manage aperture with my left hand on the front ring. Never have to leave the EVF.

Have used the XT10… before I left it in a cab. Personally I do not like fiddling with top dials, ergonomically I have to take my hand off the camera. Back or front dials are the way to go for me. I like multi too, exceptions of course but you have back button lock to overcome that or use the exposure compensation dial. Quite honestly I will use exposure bracketing or auto ISO ( 125-800) in the A, P or S modes.

so you are prefer using matrix + A priority with exp compensation, is it right ? Btw for shutter speed you can change it into T, and it will give you flexible shutter speed from 4000 to 30 sec by using front command dial (in X-T1).

Also I don't see much of a change when I use Exposure Compensation in Shutter priority compared to Auto mode. any reason? Any recommendation on where I can find examples showing AE lock and exposure compensation in all different modes. If its not too much to ask may be you can make a video. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Great video, love all your vids man. I am new to the x-t20 and photography on it's own and it's great hearing all the tips. I got a question tho. Why would you in normal day situation choose a slower shutter speed over a faster one(Bearing in mind you don't want any crazy stuff but just a normal photo)? Isn't the faster one always sharper? Thanks in advance,

    • @ogonzilla

    • @SirGwl

Stephen Schmid. From what I known. You can press AEL then half press the shutter and that will lock exposure and focus. However, if you want to refocus, you have to hold the AEL button then refocus with the shutter

I find my xt3's metering is not "pretty good" in any mode. While shooting raw, in anything but spot metering, I have to compensate by +1 1/3 to 2 stops to get an exposure that's not under exposed. I don't know if this is "normal" or not.
