This is officially the most impressive 'First Time' video to me. I've also never heard this song but the fact that he did this in one take, with his own cues and it sounds like it genuinely could be the original drum part is INSANE!!! He plays this so confidently without a single mistake, impeccable!
@@lakeshoresubtleties the beat he plays right after giving himself that cue is a signature Neil Peart beat, the drummer for Rush. Geddy and Alex are the other two band members. Go listen to the band Rush and you will hear that beat on tons of their songs, it rips
@@lakeshoresubtleties A bit hard to explain without exactly showing it. There's a certain beat that Neil Peart did a lot where he would do sort of a R-RRLRR (R and L being hands) groove on the ride cymbal (the kinda bell sounding cymbal) with the L being a snare hit, although he'd sprinkle in some ghost notes (soft hits on the snare) in between to give it a bit of extra smoothness. You hear it in the "chorus" sections of YYZ, a couple parts of Tom Sawyer, it's also all over the work of drummers he inspired too.
I've watched more than a few of these, and this is without a doubt the most complete, performance-worthy version of a song I've ever heard. He took his time, but was still relatively quick in putting it together, keeping it going, and sounding amazing. I'll be honest - I've not heard this song in over a decade, and if I heard this version (without the audio cues, obv.), while I might thing John Bonham got a bit eclectic on the track, I would not doubt for a second that it was the original...until I heard the double-bass. That kind of gives it away for us non-drummers.
@@chrisgartyThats the perfect term for this. Annotating this way never even crossed my mind but I love how its audio, I dont have to lean over to my music stand.
66Samus should be what every studio drummer should aspire to be like. A an absolute class act. Clean, professional, not over the top and humble to boot. So glad drumeo left the vocal queues in for us to learn from. A true stroke of genius.
The GOAT, John "Bonzo" Bonham, is looking down on this mate, with his cheeky smile, and is absolutely gobsmacked. Samus, the brilliant and genius sound cues you came up with and used, to help fill the voids on this track, along with the insane transitions were bloody EPIC! Holy shitters. Good onya mate! Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺 .
"Move to the ride & do the Rush beat" is such a crazy cue that so few people would understand. It's crazy how that ride groove enhances any song it's put it so effortlessly.
For anyone out there who has made a negative comment about the Drumeo staff wearing masks. The following quote is from Samus' video (ruclips.net/video/zBRcUok_UsY/видео.html) talking about the reason for this - "You might be wondering why I'm wearing a mask. I have what's called an IGA deficiency. Long story short, I get sick very easily and I still have to be extremely careful in public. You'll also notice that the Drumeo staff are going to be wearing masks to. They did that just for me. They were very accommodating for me and I am super thankful to them for doing that."
Anyone who wants to be judgey about someone they've never met, doing something with their own body, should seriously rethink their values and mind their own business.
@@rickchyczewski576 So your answer to "people should try to be more decent and should respect each other's personal choices" is "it happens, get over it, it's ok that people are shitty"?
I really like it, it gives you a better glimpse into how his mind reads the cues. If we didn't hear them, I'd just assume he did a bunch of takes and eventually got it
I think what it is is that he was reminded of what to do almost instantly as soon as his voice starts to give him the que. So it wasn't about hearing his voice so much as it being a trigger to go to the next part.
I absolutely love watching how the different drummers take vastly different approaches to learning new songs. From Samus' vocal cues in prep to the math equation trial of pneuma to Chad Smith's Fuck out we'll do it live method. Always have mad respect for the talent of drummers but watching these episodes gives me an even greater appreciation for the truly epic coordination & skill they bring to their work while making out look like fun at the same time.
My favorite thing about this video is not just how he absolutely killed it (with perfect hair to match) but watching other youtubers reacting to this because they're not just blown away by his performance but in absolute shock over his innovative audio track technique and all so impressed and eager to try it. Sparks of creativity flying everywhere. Love it.
I remember seeing this dude a decade ago announcing he was quitting his job as an insurance adjuster(?) and going full time into drumming....and he did exactly that. Now is one of the most famous RUclips drummers and on Twitch as well. Amazing dude and an amazing charisma made his goals come true. He works his ass off and it's cool to see his very hard work seen.
let the art speak for itself is always the wise thing to do. why wouldn't the thing you love also be the thing everybody else loves? When i was performing, I never spoke publicly, before or after. just fade out and disappear..
The recorded cues were absolutely genius. It's like prerecording your stream of thoughts snd memorization, leaving more headspace for just focusing on playing. That just has to be the most efficient way of mastering a song in one take there is. Beautiful.
Neil would be proud for sure. But even more so I think John Bonham would tip his hat to that rendition. It was close enough to the original to be familiar to people but different enough for you know it's not Bonham. Hearing it from a different perspective is the best way to describe his take on it.
Watching the process of a master, the creation of verse, fills, Rush, the slowdown. Then the breaking the song down into phrasing and inserting your parts and playing the thing through. Thanks for that… it was amazing to to watch a master at his craft.
He did this song justice, no other way to say it. You just love the amazement and admiration in their faces as they realize what Bonham was playing on a single kick pedal with a massive bass drum in front of it, and some of the fills he would pull off. It’s fun to watch. Love his audio “cheat sheets”. It’s YOU thinking about what comes next, but without taking away from your focus on the physical aspects of playing. A literal voice inside your head from someone looking over your shoulder who knows exactly what you need to know.
I hope Neil Peart got to realize how much his ride style was appreciated and emulated by so many drummers. This “galloping” rhythm is perfect for “the RUSH beat”
Elders React did a reaction to Led Zeppelin and Greta Van Fleet. If you aren't thoroughly familiar with the catalogs, then they do become rather close.
You should listen to the album he put out with Allison Kraus (bluegrass singer and fiddle player). Completely different genre of music, but his vocals are still uniquely Plant. It's so damn good. @@jd0879 Larnell's was just impressive because he pretty much just listened, took a couple notes, and laid down a pretty solid first take. Very much a demonstration of raw active listening
@@rodeoburger I will say that the main benefit Larnell had with the jazzier chart (not counting Enter Sandman bc that's way too straightforward) was that it was VERY similar to the classic chart "Spain" by Chick Corea (even the title, "Chick's Pain", sounds like "Chick Spain" and gives a pretty big hint). Larnell's a super accomplished jazz/fusion drummer/percussionist and would absolutely be familiar with "Spain", so his active listening was mostly just seeing which parts differed from the original and how. He already had a great sense of the vibe of the tune and the general structure from the outset, which definitely simplifies the process!
This has got to be my favorite Drumeo video by far. It's refreshing to see Samus actually try rather than mess around. His cues were definitely on point and kept him on track which led him to crushing this on a single take.
This is officially the best “first time” I’ve ever seen. His own vocal track is revolutionary. It seems simple, but it’s genius, and he’s nuts on the skins!
Neil’s pulled that ride cymbal pattern out on at least 20 Rush songs, I wouldn’t doubt he’d pop it in the exact same place Samus did, had he wrote the drum part
@@tonyspro I find it really funny because it's one of those things where it just seems like every prog drummer has "their" beat that they kinda fall back on as their "I wanna do something cool here but nothing that is too busy and covers up the melody." Neil Peart/Rush had the one Samus does in this song, and Bill Bruford (the drummer for Yes) on at least two songs on the album Fragile does this paradiddle-diddle pattern on the snare drum and the ride cymbal or hi-hat (right hand on cymbal, left on snare, RLRRLL RLRRLL repeating). It's prominent in the bridge in Roundabout, and right at the start of Heart of the Sunrise.

No one with ears and the gift of hearing can doubt for a second that this man is an awesome drummer. Even more remarkable is the level of genuine humility Sami’s possesses.
I'm really not able to comprehend how this man performed this on the first and only take. The virtuosity is outrageous. His approach and execution to learning it so quickly is something I wouldn't think even the top 0.1% of musicians can accomplish. Also his hair is awesome.
He spent time before his first take working out each part. He’s also been a session musician and touring drummer for a bunch of bands where he has to learn other people’s music fairly quickly. I agree though, it really is insane to be able to pull that off on the first full take. He’s also an extremely good guitarist. Very well practiced and musically minded.
Yeah he plays live to whatever songs people request on Twitch twice a week. Random song starts, he starts playing along. He picks stuff up right away, it's crazy

I lost my father much more recently, and he too was an absolute Led Zeppelin fan! I had the same thought as you while watching this. If we play it loud enough, enough times, they will hear it. Cheers, my friend!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Knowing how much Bonham was a student of drums, I wish he would have been alive to hear this. Just knowing how much drumming has changed over the years
That was awesome! This was one of my favorite songs growing up. It sounded like you were the original drummer. It still surprises me that music lovers / professionals have never heard this song. The video just made my day. Thank you.
it's fucking BANANAS how tight he plays on the fly like this. Samus is a quantization bot covered in a fleshy outer covering. The precision is so admirable
You know what I enjoy about this series, no drama. Not a single drummer has gotten on here and talked trash about the original drum track, or say what they did was better. They are always like, "oh that's what they do", "ah, yeah that makes sense", or "oh that's good". For being the crazy guy in the back of band beating stuff with sticks, they all seem pretty chill lol.
Great points, guys. I totally agree. I think it also goes to show that Drumeo is not doing this exercise to embarrass anyone or to expose a flaw in a recorded track. It's purely a fun way to see how another master might play a song. And as a drummer, I am fully entertained.
As someone who loves Led Zeppelin, I am incredibly impressed!! I really didn't expect it to be such an awesome performance at first!! And the fact that it is so different than the original makes it even better and fresh! One of the best Drumeo videos ever..

This is my 4th time watching this already. The more I watch it the more my mind is blown. He plays DOZENS of drum fills, and as far as I can tell, all of them are different. Most of the time I’ve noticed many songs recycle through the same fills throughout the song, but here Samus is making each one unique. 13:33 this part gave me chills. Like holy shit. As a fairly new drummer, this is inspiring ❤

I love that this channel showcases the diverse ways the drummers create notes in their song-learning processes. I hadn't seen the audio notes happen before, but it makes so much sense.
Everyone has already said everything there is to say about how well this part is put together, but man, how gorgeous does the kit sound? The tone of the toms is just like silk for my ears.
@@JadenZeCreatorNo, the kit itself is an electronic kit but the cymbals aren't, so he's using a combination of both. “Move to the ride and do the Rush beat” may be the best audio cue ever recorded.
Seems he would fit right in with Geddy and Alex, too.
Can you explain this at all for the non drummers?
@@lakeshoresubtleties the beat he plays right after giving himself that cue is a signature Neil Peart beat, the drummer for Rush. Geddy and Alex are the other two band members. Go listen to the band Rush and you will hear that beat on tons of their songs, it rips
I think Peart used a similar beat in Time Stand Still but that definitely wasn't the only one.

Who was laughing at the cheat sheet and thought 2 mins into the song "damn, this is exceptional and one of the best drumeo recordings ever" ???

For anyone out there who has made a negative comment about the Drumeo staff wearing masks. The following quote is from Samus' video (ruclips.net/video/zBRcUok_UsY/видео.html) talking about the reason for this - "You might be wondering why I'm wearing a mask. I have what's called an IGA deficiency. Long story short, I get sick very easily and I still have to be extremely careful in public. You'll also notice that the Drumeo staff are going to be wearing masks to. They did that just for me. They were very accommodating for me and I am super thankful to them for doing that."
Drumeo should pin this comment. I noticed and didn't think anything of it, but others get judgey.
Anyone who wants to be judgey about someone they've never met, doing something with their own body, should seriously rethink their values and mind their own business.

Thank you for leaving the audio queues in, it's like we get to hear his inner monologue. It's the drummer version of the rally car navigator.
Overdubbing the instructions is not nearly as distracting as I was expecting. That feels like such a useful technique.
Thought the same thing
I think it helped that his queues were in time, so it almost felt like part of the performance rather than a jarring interruption.
I really like it, it gives you a better glimpse into how his mind reads the cues. If we didn't hear them, I'd just assume he did a bunch of takes and eventually got it
I think what it is is that he was reminded of what to do almost instantly as soon as his voice starts to give him the que. So it wasn't about hearing his voice so much as it being a trigger to go to the next part.
weird that the suppression of ego and the usage of technology is a viable strat in every domain

let the art speak for itself is always the wise thing to do. why wouldn't the thing you love also be the thing everybody else loves?
When i was performing, I never spoke publicly, before or after. just fade out and disappear..
The recorded cues were absolutely genius. It's like prerecording your stream of thoughts snd memorization, leaving more headspace for just focusing on playing. That just has to be the most efficient way of mastering a song in one take there is. Beautiful.
What's with the masks when he was in the room with him? Is he diseased or something?
"Roll the credits, Roll the credits," shows over. All time winner. The cues, the insane snares, it we like Neil playing Zeppilin. Gawd damn.
hearing that Rush beat during the song was so awesome and sounded great.
Yeah it definitely had a Neil feel.
Neil would be proud for sure. But even more so I think John Bonham would tip his hat to that rendition. It was close enough to the original to be familiar to people but different enough for you know it's not Bonham. Hearing it from a different perspective is the best way to describe his take on it.
Canadian drummers rule!
Honestly never thought about it, but Plant’s voice is so unique you could never truly ‘hide’ a Led Zeppelin song from anyone could you?
Geddy Lee's voice is kinda close, but Rush has their own unique sounds that make them distinguishable

This is the best "Drummer hears for the first time" since Larnell. Samus nailed it.
Disagree Larnell’s wasn’t that good. This one the other hand was so smooth and sounded like it can be the original track
Way better than Larnell, no comparison - best Drumeo performance in this series.

@@tonyspro for sure - to a rush fan or percussionist it's as familiar as the perdie shuffle. I love the influence Neil had to so many.
Why is Don Jr. at Drumeo??? 😂
@@tonyspro I find it really funny because it's one of those things where it just seems like every prog drummer has "their" beat that they kinda fall back on as their "I wanna do something cool here but nothing that is too busy and covers up the melody."
Neil Peart/Rush had the one Samus does in this song, and Bill Bruford (the drummer for Yes) on at least two songs on the album Fragile does this paradiddle-diddle pattern on the snare drum and the ride cymbal or hi-hat (right hand on cymbal, left on snare, RLRRLL RLRRLL repeating). It's prominent in the bridge in Roundabout, and right at the start of Heart of the Sunrise.

Great points, guys. I totally agree. I think it also goes to show that Drumeo is not doing this exercise to embarrass anyone or to expose a flaw in a recorded track. It's purely a fun way to see how another master might play a song. And as a drummer, I am fully entertained.
There is no correct way to play a song, just the way that person would play that song at that time in their life.

Boomer of 65 years here...Enjoyed your humor and creativity...Listening to Zeppelin is always good any time of day...❤🎉❤
the vocal cues is such a great idea which i am going to steal. Also great rendition of the song, cant believe he knocked it out on the first take with little to no messing up!
the coolest thing about this video series is how different drummers approach the same task in very different ways. @66Samus has his audio cheat sheet, Portnoy writes everything (this guy is a beast with his super weird signatures), Domino mostly by ear and repetition, Chad improvises in the moment (another beast in drums), Eloy.... damn is Eloy, Philo and Nandi have their annotations, etc, etc, etc.
Clearly some songs seem "easier" to play, but when drummers are out of their "safe environment" you see the hard part of learning drums.
This was a great video and honestly, his double bass course was the drumeo course that clicked the most for me. Please create more Drumeo content with him!
