Pop/soft rock musicians are generally very accomplished musicians and as you nailed it, playing for large pop artists often means you're a hired gun, and one wrong note is the difference between being re-hired or being passed for the next world tour. Normal hard rock, punk or metal bands are kind of a family and are more forgiving. A small mistake? Hey, you're only human. But huge pop artists demand the best, and this is what they get. Look at Leland Sklar. Sure, his stuff may no be as technically intricate as some crazy-ass death bands out there, but the guy's a total pro, will chart out a song/come up with THE bass line that the song NEEDS and record it within one hour. Boom, done. This is why guys like him, Kenny Aronoff, etc... are the go-to guys in the industry. Not because they're technical monsters, but because they get the job done for 95% of what's on radio today.
I lovee how positive the comments are towards Ashton. As a 5sos fan, when he appeared at any rock media people would underestimate and belittle him for being a pop drummer. But this video just proved everybody wrong😊😊
It's a testament to the community Drumeo have built. Metal spaces often have a reputation for gatekeeping the genre, but Drumeo Metalheads are the most welcoming I've ever come across.
manufactured bands often have great drummers - especially in pop punk, they get replaced if not, too much money is on the line Edit: atleast read before getting offended 😅
In my country, there are tons of guitarists in pop bands who are badass soloists, but you wouldn't know if you had only listened to their released records. These killers let hell loose in events and concerts.
I’ve been drumming for decades. I’ve heard 5 seconds of summer, it’s alright and catchy. I was definitely prematurely judging him. With difficult accents to do under pressure, he killed it. Great feel and natural fills, awesome swivel kick. Some parts weren’t studio perfect still but he absolutely deserves full respect from the whole drumming world. Great playing! This makes me wanna go listen to 5 seconds of summer.
He has also released two solo albums, Superbloom and Blood on the Drums. The second especially has plenty of 70s, 80s and 90s inspiration. As for 5SOS, you might like their lives more than the studio versions. Their approach is having a more pop-feel in the studio, to make them more palatable to radios and such, and going more rock in the lives. "Teeth (live from the Vault)" is especially recommended
Please bring him back! This is easily my favorite one of these and I've seen them all. He totally killed this with confidence. Wow! Never heard of him before. Thank you for bringing him to our attention.
Been a Megadeth fan for 40 years… I think it’s super cool that he goes in cold with no idea what the original drum track sounds like and is able to completely interpret it from his own perspective. Great idea for a show! I actually like some of the parts he played better than what Nick Menza did. Great job guys.
This whole episode is an absolute triumph. The personality of Ashton, his take on an absolute classic, the reaction at the end from Dirk and the tribute to Nick. Pure class
If you're interested in him but don't wish to listen to 5SOS (if you do, they are much heavier live, especially in the "live at the vault" versions, so you might wish to check those out first), Ashton has released two solo albums, Superbloom and Blood on the Drums
My first time seeing this bloke but nailing Tornado of Souls in his own way without a single hiccup after the first listen is impressive. What a great intelligent drummer.
the man really let himself get carried away, he was in His Element, his flow state, the sheer glee on his face - you just know his body knows it was born for this - that's years of expertise coming in to kick, and Damn is he good - so proud of ash AAaahhhhh
When he kept playing for a few secs after the song ended, it reminded me of Megadeth's cover of Paranoid where Nick kept playing even when the song ended and Dave was yelling his name to make him stop. 😂 Loved Ashton's drumming. Everyone's talking about his right foot technique now.
This dude is rad! I had this video in the background, hearing the double pedal, and when I looked at the footage and realized that it was on a single kick, I just forgot what I had been doing and focused on the rest of the video.
Pop drummers are usually really skilled. Its also one of the parts of being a good drummer, to realize that in some cases showing your technical skills would ruin the song, so its more clever to keep it simple, like in most of the pop music. And its not nearly as easy as it sounds, I often find myself playing some pop song and getting bored, so overplaying like crazy after the second verse or something. I love this series not only because of great and inspiring personas or that "out of comfort zone" aspect, but I also love that it shows the abilities of drummers from different genres, it shows that being a drummer who plays less technical genre of music doesnt mean that you lack skill or something, it just means that you serve different kind of music and understand your job, while still being able to play something else very well if needed
Something about this comment reminds of me of that drummer from some Japanese kids tv show that went viral a couple years ago for going ham on a drum solo. Not everybody can play for a band like Tool, Dream Theatre, etc. some of them make money through different avenues and just because the music they play as a 9-5 is simple and basic, doesn't mean they don't moonlight as a hecking skilled monster during their down time.
I m 50 years old sock. Having listened to this on my teenage years million times. This is a an outstanding performance at first take. This is the definition of pure talent and dedication to music. Thank you.
I'm sorry but I have to give this guy props the way he deserves it and I don't see many people do: DUDE THAT WAS AWESOME!!! As a lowkey 5SOS fan; I'm so happy to see Ashton here and for some of the drumming community to be giving him his flowers. Always been a talented player.
I think i a big part of the success of this bit is how positive it is to all involved. No one dunks on the person for no knowing the band they're hearing. No shade is thrown on the old part for any reason. The new part is often celebrated for its new interpretation. And with Dirk coming back and listening to the redo with such a smile and openness. The vibe is a really big part of why this collections of videos is doing so well.
Dudes a g. I'm a life long megadeth fan. That single foot kick technique is sick. A lot of the choices on the fly where complimentary and full of flavor.
It's called a double stroke, and metal drummers that use double pedal also use this technique on the double bass> A great example of how this works is to watch the drummer from Aborted, Ken Bedene.
This guy is on fire. Crushed it! Nailing the accents towards the end and doing those sweet bell patterns, not to mention his foot that’s almost as good as McBrain’s. Crushed it! Way to go! I don’t know his band and I don’t listen to that, but what a player!
I have really grown to enjoy 5SOS as their sound has matured over the years because you can tell that they actually are really talented, hard working musicians in their own right, and Ashton has always been such a tight, intuitive, powerful drummer. I expected something good, having seen him kill it in many live concert clips, but this blew me away. I loved this refreshing spin on the track and the way he was clearly having a fun time. The way his face lights up with joy when he comes up with something that feels made for the part he’s playing is delightful. Also, his memory is insane and he has next level drum IQ, goddamn. What a creative drummer. Ashton needs to be back!!
How close he was, was basically like as if he got all the main bits, but put them in different places or didn't do them for enough measures. So basically he was amazingly close for someone who didn't know the song.
yes YES exactly, I couldn’t find the words, thank you for this. i totally agree, it’s like he heard the essence of it and just was playing it out of order?? so impressive
Before he even started playing immediately liked him. He was funny and cool. Knew his attempt would be great. "I have the power to change everything into 4/4".
Out of all the Drumeo videos I think this is the first time I’ve heard a drum sooo different yet so good in a song. Ashton definitely have a great memory, he listened to a really long song with many parts and just hit every single part perfectly. Dang I’m so amazed.
@@Valyn it was actually sarcastic fun, and talking about the Iron Maiden to Megadeth comparison. “Be ready to be judged for that comment” Had nothing to do with don’t fuck up your performance.
Imma just say I literally saw a show on the hottest, longest day of summer in Texas where he played the first full half, killed it, and found out the second half was cancelled cause he has passed out due to heat exhaustion. He is 💯 a freaking BEAST in a teddy bear facade.
No joke, as I was watching this I was remembered hearing about that concert and well… I kinda understand now. 😂 I’d pass out trying to play like this in Texas lol.
Nick Menza was a beast on the drums. Easily one of the greatest of all-time. Do yourself a favor and watch their Live in London from 1992, it'll blow your mind. Glad I got to see him before he passed. R.I.P.
this is by far my favorite Megadeth song. Its almost unrecognizable with such a different drum section. It shows how much drums make or break a song. It was nice listening the song with a fresh perspective though. Keep these videos coming! they always make my day
The Tom rolls and build during the solo, then how he brought it back to the beat was amazing....freaking gold star....🎉🎉🎉 The kick technique is just masterful....way to go kid!!!
I've been a 5sos fan since the band started and as fan of music in general. I'm so happy to see so many people who didn't know about Ashton saying all those positive things about him
I've never heard of him before, mostly I believe due to the fact that he doesn't play the genres that I tend to listen to but man, mad respect for this guy. He is a seriously great drummer
Would be cool if they showed only the drumless tracks to us until they reveal the full song to the drummer. It’s fun as someone who also hasn’t heard the song to also imagine the drum part without it being spoiled
@edwardgogo8066 Not the whole song. Just the bits they play. They do play a bit of it already in the videos, so it's not much different. And they play it when the drummer is actually playing, so not really an excuse not to do it.
@@edwardgogo8066 How are they selling the drumless tracks? Everything they use on their videos are like removed using RX or AI tools. Feels like that would be a major licensing issue.
@@wk4958 I think theyre using some their own software to seperate tracks, but its actually a very good point about copyrights. Its either some sort of gray area or loophole or it just shouldnt be legal, since ultimately its still an art piece created by the original author, in this case Megadeth, just filtered through some sort of AI software (or they do that manually, idk, probably AI) to remove certain instruments like drums. Im pretty sure they offer drumless tracks behind the paywall, so its an interesting legal argument right there
You can clearly tell he was letting the song flow through him on the second part. I think a second take would have been even better, but I understand the fun of one take haha. Great video!
He did many great parts (like these Hi-Hats hits 7:20 ) & i even really enjoy seeing him keep going at the end. Some kind of homage to Nick...Nick...Nick...!!!
It's always neat seeing what the spur-of-the-moment improvisation brings out, and how changes to the beat can recontextualize familiar songs a bit. I especially found it novel how the drummer went double-time on all the half-time parts. These creative exercises are a lot of fun to watch.
This is why I freaking love Ashton Irwin! I've been a fan since late 2012 and I took to him instantly! For those whom also didn't know, he has his own music!!

@@happyninja42 No no, insurance. It's a very dangerous job
The best pop artists are NOT gonna choose anyone but the absolute best to play with them! 💪
I lovee how positive the comments are towards Ashton. As a 5sos fan, when he appeared at any rock media people would underestimate and belittle him for being a pop drummer. But this video just proved everybody wrong😊😊
Yes!!! So glad he's getting his flowers! So long overdue!
It's a testament to the community Drumeo have built. Metal spaces often have a reputation for gatekeeping the genre, but Drumeo Metalheads are the most welcoming I've ever come across.
right!!!!!!! this is so awesome!!!!!
Pop punk/rock gets a bad rap i suppose because it’s /popular/ but it’s still rock at its core and Ashton is amazing song
manufactured bands often have great drummers - especially in pop punk, they get replaced if not, too much money is on the line
Edit: atleast read before getting offended 😅
This guy is a beast. I like it when a pop drummer let go his demons on a metal song ❤
For more of his demons, check out his two solo albums, Superbloom and Blood On The Drums!
This is such a wholesome comment. ☺️ So cool to see everyone commenting on these videos just appreciating and enjoying awesome drummers!
i think around 7:54 he started to realize, that he is playing over one of the greatest metal solos of all time.
Hahahaha grouse comment
@@user-zj4tt2ey9o not a bad strategy when trying to play along to a song you’ve never before imo
Please bring him back! This is easily my favorite one of these and I've seen them all. He totally killed this with confidence. Wow! Never heard of him before. Thank you for bringing him to our attention.
As well as the five 5 Seconds Of Summer albums, Ashton has two solo albums, Superbloom and (recently released) Blood On The Drums.
Been a Megadeth fan for 40 years…
I think it’s super cool that he goes in cold with no idea what the original drum track sounds like and is able to completely interpret it from his own perspective.
Great idea for a show!
I actually like some of the parts he played better than what Nick Menza did.
Great job guys.
Dude the series RULES!
This whole episode is an absolute triumph. The personality of Ashton, his take on an absolute classic, the reaction at the end from Dirk and the tribute to Nick. Pure class
One of the BEST ive seen here. Even the veterans that have been here cant play a song on the fly without taking any notes and in one take.
nothing wrong with taking notes
He's not playing the song, he's just playing a bunch of random drum beats in succession, he's paying no attention to the riffs or the song structure.
@@somethingelse04 he didn't say there was anything "wrong" with taking notes. he said it was insanely impressive to be able to forego them entirely.
This dude is unreal. Clearly after reading the comments, I wasn’t the only one who hasn’t heard of him, but wow! Unreal
Loved Ashton's drumming. Everyone's talking about his right foot technique now.

Ashton could absolutely nail Iron Maiden, with that fantastic single footwork.
Yeah, I've only seen Nicko of Iron Maiden do that... That was so cool to see, I just want a full length video of just his right foot!
FOR REAL
This dude is rad! I had this video in the background, hearing the double pedal, and when I looked at the footage and realized that it was on a single kick, I just forgot what I had been doing and focused on the rest of the video.
5 seconds of summer's next album ought to have a metal song on it.
But he needs to learn how to play metal
Their live albums are as rock as it could tbh. So you have the pop official albums and the more "traditional" sounding live albums.
I’m all for it, I’ve heard I think it was either Ashton or Calum so harsh vocals for fun when they did karaoke
They have a song called “teeth” which is the closest you’ll get to metal from them. Inspired by stuff like NIN
You should give a listen to his solo album Superbloom.
Megadeth was my childhood, 5sos was my teenage obsession, i loved this!! thank you for having Ash, he’s crazy talented 🖤
Every pop drummer that has done this series has crushed it.
They have an exceptional understanding for groove
It also has to be a lil fun for them to flex and show their range of talent

I'm sorry but I have to give this guy props the way he deserves it and I don't see many people do: DUDE THAT WAS AWESOME!!! Your musicality and understanding of the song just from one listen is just insane! Vastly underrated, great chops and smart use of space. @@arianamaria_ Right!? The intro to ‘Teeth’ in the Live From The Vault version???? SO good. 🔥

This is the way.... the way of pain in his face..... lovely.

Would be cool if they showed only the drumless tracks to us until they reveal the full song to the drummer. It’s fun as someone who also hasn’t heard the song to also imagine the drum part without it being spoiled
That would ruin their business since they sell the drumless tracks on their courses
@edwardgogo8066 Not the whole song. Just the bits they play. They do play a bit of it already in the videos, so it's not much different. And they play it when the drummer is actually playing, so not really an excuse not to do it.
you can always skip to their takes first and then listen to the original after
@@edwardgogo8066 How are they selling the drumless tracks?

I love the addition of getting the drummer's to watch and give feedback on the attempt!
That was sick. It’s such a cool concept, being able to hear another drummers version of a song.
It's always neat seeing what the spur-of-the-moment improvisation brings out, and how changes to the beat can recontextualize familiar songs a bit. I especially found it novel how the drummer went double-time on all the half-time parts. These creative exercises are a lot of fun to watch.
