Doesn't matter how good you are, opening yourself up as an artist like this is so hard -- all these guests are so awesome. Jess' drumming on The Summer Set is much appreciated. Been through some years with those albums.
I've never heard of Jess, but as a drummer, nothing but respect. She heard the track only once, took no notes and went for it. That takes an enormous amount of confidence and she killed it. She's very talented. I'm a fan now.
This is probably my favourite one in this series so far... Blows my mind, and I keep coming back for a listen of that one take... They need to bring her back..

It's so crazy that she thought she didn't do it justice. Holy cow she absolutely killed it!!! Amazing soul, took her one take and just rode that wave to greatness!
Her perfomance is great. And it's also always humbling when these drummers say "never heard this song before", songs that Rock fans would say are common knowledge, just shows that we all live in our own little bubbles.
i met this dude that had never listened to smells like teen spirit before, dude listened exclusively to edm and rap and some people just aren't eclectic at all
I can’t believe she never heard it. That’s bullshit. And her performance looks too close from the original. She just wanted to size the opportunity to be comfortable
Everyone has gaps in their lifetime music listening experience, even professional musicians. There's just so much iconic stuff out there that it's inevitable you'll miss at least some of it.
Or maybe it's just the age difference? :) She was a child when this came out. I'm 50 and I wouldn't be surprised if I got caught not knowing about some particular song which was released when I was a kid :)
Not a drummer either. Is it bad to say I kinda liked her version better? There's a couple of bits from the original that I still prefer but damn hers has more energy, which I didn't think was possible to add to a RATM song
Damn. That was actually really really really good. The beggining where she let the guitar lead and then comes in like a boss is something I can listen to over and over. And she keeps it steady never trying to pull attention to her playing, delivering only what's needed. She didn't try any extravagent stuff, but still found a couple places to surprise us. So fing brilliant... And her energy and intensity and joy? Man, this one will be the best "never heard it" cover for a long time, if not forever.
I know she has a real passion for drumming. I was standing behind her backstage at the Warped Tour in Phoenix. She gave it her all and then literally passed out after the song was over from heat exhaustion. Medics had to come over and revive her. A great and passionate drummer!
I worked a show for 5 seconds of summer and not even a minute into the first song the drummer passed out due to heat exhaustion. That night it became 0 minutes of drummer.
I am (embarrassingly) shocked at the sheer number of these talented musicians that appear so down-to-Earth and humble - I’m certain, if I somehow had their talent, that I would be an absolute jack-ass
Maybe part why they are so cool is, because they can release all the Energy into the Drums why others release it as frustration into other People. I think boxing is also often used that way.
100% Full Commitment to how she feels the music! Her interpretation is authentic, original, and by goodness spot on! Bravo, Jess & Drumeo great content!
To be honest, I'm never disappointed that someone never heard a "very famous" song when it's in this kind of video. Because it means the video is going to be a killer vid.

Same! I am not a musician (nor could I be...zero talent), but my favorite part of these videos is watching how full-bodied the drum playing truly is. I never realized drum kits had so many crazy parts/pieces. I've never seen one up close--and the drummers are usually the farthest people from the front of the stage, where you can't really see what they're doing. I mean, you see the energy it takes to play, but not all the highly coordinated movements. It's quite amazing.
She did great but i'm struggle how it would be possible to not have ever heard this song. Mind blown. It played everywhere all the time for 20 years 😵💫
@@AliceDjinger what? you've never heard Rage against the machine? ok.. that's just so weird to me. but i guess if you're like less than 20 years old and never saw mtv or listened to the radio in your life then i guess it makes sense..

Yes, any stupid person who doesn't know how to listen to music without attracting the attention of others (because playing air drums doesn't show anyone that you know how to play music) does that.
Another cool thing you realise about RATM is that the drums have so much presence and groove without being overly complicated or showy. Brad Wilks is a powerhouse of understated rock drumming that was perfect for the RATM sound.
Okay, this isn't really a song to tear up with, but I listen to metal and play the drums all my life. This woman nailed it. Her energy and way to play it gave me goosebumps and made me tear up. Holding my breath even. That was one of the purest and most (in a positive way) infectious things I've ever listened to. dude idk what it is but recently i’ve been getting that reflex too. like i wanna cry at how good a plot a movie is or the other day i almost teared up to a blast beat that caught me by surprise. 😂
It’s normal. With age we gain experience and appreciation for excellence in a palpable form… usually strong or profound emotion. Crying is the human default for “I don’t know how to express or let out what I’m feeling” This is why music is so powerful
I totally subscribe to this. Thanks @TheHardDark for writing it, thanks Jess for nailing it, thanks Drumeo to exist and invite Jess, thanks to everyone who's making the world a more beautiful place.
Kinda surprising to me that the best video I've ever seen on Drumeo is not coming from a "big" name, but from a drummer I've never heard before. This is so amazing, it rocks, it's honest, it's pure, it's raw and it's heavy as hell! Thank you Jess, you're awesome!
The fact that this channel has gotten SO big and has been able to have all of these incredible drummers onboard makes me so happy. I’ve been a fan for years, even as a non-drummer. I love that you guys facilitate young musicians understanding how these drummers are able to do this type of thing, always putting the “active listening” explanation. You guys rock. Keep it up
People need to realize that these exercises are not about nail the drum parts, but to see a differente drummer in action on a song, their process, approach and creativity. There's nothing to be afraid of.
@@mejulian01 fills are drum phrases that guides the music to another session. Example: at the end of the verse the drummer can do a fill and then the chorus begin. You do a groove and sometimes you finalize it with a fill.
When they said “you’re in your own head”, this is what they mean. She KILLED that take, and everyone loves her take, but she’s her harshest critic. But she couldn’t believe she KILLED IT. She did kill it! She’s amazing.
Her personal break down was actually refreshingly honest. She did great. She could of let it breathe in spots a little more, but she points that out herself. Plus she was simultaneously doing the exercise and playing around with the song to feel it out. I thought her after commentary was every bit as good as the performance was.
@@plane_guy6051 That’s true. But, respectfully, there’s also a difference between imposter syndrome and honest criticism. I’m surely projecting my own issues onto this musician, and I hope she never doubts her own skill. But the human condition is to question and doubt oneself, rather than own excellence whilst striving to be better. All this to say, she’s amazing, I love her take, damn good interpretation.
Yeah I'm not a fan of how harsh she was on herself. The part that always twists me up is when she says "This is really gonna put me in my place" And I'm just like "girl, your place is at that fucking drumset, because you have good skills and improvisational talent."
The drumming on this song is so iconic it's hard to let go of the original, but she definitely killed this. Would love to hear what she could have done with more planning.
I found myself thinking that it sounded weird, but ONLY because I've heard the original drums hundreds of times, and her take on it was great. I liked how they discussed that it could have been an entirely different song is she was recording with the band in the studio.
@@isaaclarson "it could have been an entirely different song" so true, and I love that so much. Change one person's take on the vibe, and it blossoms into something new and different.

This is an excellent take. Brad does what he hears the song telling him to do. Jess heads a different voice. Both add different but equally effective support.
@@scene24man Along with lyrical content and Tom Morello's musicianship, what really separates Rage from the rest of the 90s rap rock also-rans is how tight and funky their rhythm section is.
Yeah, Rage used a lot of primal beats in their songs and let Tom explore the room with his unique guitar wizardry. The drums were used more as a thump than a musical instrument at times, which is probably what made them so good. If Brad were back there using a lot of fills, double bass, complex signatures, etc it probably would have drowned out Zack’s crucial lyrics and Tom’s riffs somewhat.
I love her version she took it to another level of playing all the way through the song. Again, this was awesome she didn't take a break, which it sounded great, and she killed it. I just totally LOVE this segment from Drumeo. So far I haven't heard a single drummer, no matter how humble they are, to not absolutely nail every song you've got them to play, and this was no exception.
Same here dude
This is probably my favourite one in this series so far... Blows my mind, and I keep coming back for a listen of that one take... They need to bring her back..
She's definitely old enough to know who Rage Against the Machine are lol. Why do they pretend to not know or have heard of, Bulls On Parade. It's got to be an act lol my 13 year old Nephew loves RATM, and unfortunately these teens can only see RUclips footage of how awesome that time was where every seeing you listen to on the radio, and every artist and their music like deftones, disturbed, No Doubt Exedra was. But this chick looks old enough to know who this band is LOL
Jess looks like she's in her thirties, and she would definitely know who Rage Against the Machine are. I just love how they think they're too young to know who this very popular, and Brilliant band still is in today's tragic slim pickings of fabulous and talented artists into days crazy world. The 90's... oh where do we start with the best decade of rock groups like Korn, Deftones, Marilyn manson ECT! Ever lol. But she knows😅
Well Jess has either been hiding underneath a rock, or living on Mars for the past three decades if she's never heard of RATM lol especially one the most played songs ever Bulls On Parade lol. Unless you are 5 years old then you know who this group is. I don't buy anything she saying lol.
It's so crazy that she thought she didn't do it justice. Holy cow she absolutely killed it!!! Amazing soul, took her one take and just rode that wave to greatness!
Holy shit she absolutely killed it. And she NAILED that ending.
Love the overall humility of the show’s guests. Everyone is always respectful of the existing piece and then THEY SLAY EVERY TIME!😂🤘🏽
Her perfomance is great. And it's also always humbling when these drummers say "never heard this song before", songs that Rock fans would say are common knowledge, just shows that we all live in our own little bubbles.

I know she has a real passion for drumming. I was standing behind her backstage at the Warped Tour in Phoenix. She gave it her all and then literally passed out after the song was over from heat exhaustion. Medics had to come over and revive her. A great and passionate drummer!
cool story bro
I worked a show for 5 seconds of summer and not even a minute into the first song the drummer passed out due to heat exhaustion. That night it became 0 minutes of drummer.

Another cool thing you realise about RATM is that the drums have so much presence and groove without being overly complicated or showy. Brad Wilks is a powerhouse of understated rock drumming that was perfect for the RATM sound.
That's why I thought he was a good replacement for Sabbath. Bill Ward was much more groove-oriented than people realize.
Yep. SO. MUCH. GROOVE.

Keep it up

I like this comment a lot.

@@CristianKirk what are fills?
@@mejulian01 fills are drum phrases that guides the music to another session. Example: at the end of the verse the drummer can do a fill and then the chorus begin.
You do a groove and sometimes you finalize it with a fill.

Brad’s drumming is so simple and understated. I really liked hearing Jess’ more complex take, with more accents and fills. She absolutely nailed it!
Yeah she had a “harder” feel that really works well. I guess I never realized how groovy the original kinda is.
