Whoever came up with this content concept deserves a raise. So sick.
No! But Deserve global award
It was you wasn’t it? 🤔
Ikr
I was thinking this exact same thing right now!!!!!!! Amazing concept!!!!!
totally!!!!!!!! Hire me guys!!!!!!
Imagine being able to avoid that song for all these years. That's the real talent 😅
Doesn’t happen. And Chad had definitely heard The Kill, his smile after hearing a few lyrics gave it away, he’d played along before.
professional touring musicians really dont have a lot of time to listen to a lot of music. they usually know what they like and explore that ie. what he said about jazz. T Pain has a series called "gun to your head" where he asks musicians to pick a song they know all the lyrics to and most of them have a hard time lol
this song was literally everywhere when it was in the charts. The is no way in the world he hasn't heard this song. @@sk33t_38
It’s at that point I call bull, if it had been a hit by someone like steps or mcfly I might have believed it more
😅
I find it funny that Megadeth’s drummer actually slowed the part down. Brilliant playing.
Yes! I thought the same thing.
I love it! 🤘🏼
First 2 verses was slow..then it's blend well
It's slower but it's heavier
Hahaha yeah this is a good point… I’d say he made it more melodic and heartfelt
What a super sweet guy. I love how gentle so many metal guys are.
He had the sweetest smile when he was listening to the original 🥺
I own a barbershop, and one of our barbers was a touring hardcore band drummer. Our 5 year old used to climb him like playground equipment and he never minded. He did get said kid a drum set for Christmas one year. Not sure we ever forgave him for that, but he was a big teddy bear we adore to this day. He would never be in the shop alone though, was convinced the 150 year old building was haunted
They're usually sad boys trying to get out their sadness. Sweet Lil Bebes
Metal is very cathartic. If I'm having a bad day, playing something heavy and brutal on guitar actually helps. Screams are helpful as well.@@ariellagrange1779

This whole concept of a musician playing a song blind and creating their own version is PERFECT!!!!!!!! It completely shows the beauty of interpretation with music.
Check 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 "em uma música" by Lucas Inutilismo. He basically covers in his own rock version some songs. it's really amazing, and he does ALL the instruments by himself as well

Also awesome how a musician can appreciate the talent of another even though their genres are totally different.
Those are great traits all mixed up together, probably an awesome dude to learn from

His version really made this song sound like ballad which was fucking dope.
240th like.
That's the first thing I thought, like his version made sense with the lyrics.
It made it a mournful lament of lost love rather than a defiant anthem. Which I think might fit the lyrics just as well
I loved that he did it in halftime during the verses. He calmed down the verses and energized the bridges and choruses with his fills. This was awesome

but you know, giving advices to others on every oportunity is not a sign of humbleness, right? =))
This is the best example of how a song can be changed so dramatically by the drums.
True, I had a band and there was this time the singer said that the drums were not a important for the mood of a song
Y'all never seen That thing you do?
Yes sir. Absolutely
It's more anthemic, it turns it into almost a My Chemical Romance song
lol drums are arguably the most important part for the mood.
Besides all that's already been said, his genuine laugh followed by the line "Hey, man, don't hate me... I did my best" showed how humble, respectful and great of an artist he is.
Sounds like he’s just being a good guy, don’t read into it too hard 😂

Drumming in half time really makes it even more of an emo track, and made the contrast when he sped up for the chorus feel even better.
Very much agree, it's more sludgy, more emo.
word exactly. I don't even particularly like that song, it just feels melodramatic to me.
But then THIS version somehow hits the emotional "oomf" that I think the song is meant to a little harder. I found myself singing along to the lyrics.
Transformed the song from an earworm that I'm sick of hearing to an absolute banger. It's like his style of drumming helped me see why so many people love that track.

His version of this song has such a Foo Fighters vibe. Well done!
somewhere between the killers and Megadeath is like half of the foo fighters song book 😂

I'm happy I found this comment and that I'm not alone in my analysis
Ehhh I did not hear one flam in the entire song. (Correct me if I'm wrong 😅) Can't be foo fighters without at least 3 or 4 flams but man he really did a "killer" job. The outro with the double bass was sic!
You say that and now I can't unhear it.

This is the kind of guy you want in your band. You can see how seriously he takes his job. Pure dedication and professionalism.
I don't know if people can understand, how amazing it is, what this drummer just did. He is a true artist.
I know nothing about drumming at all and I'm watching this video for the 10th time in a row now, hypnotized

@@Xr3737 I mean, it sounds vaguely familiar, but then again so does every pop song. I don't listen to radio, I would've need to have heard this in some bar.
It seems mad but honestly, drummers just know. We are a special breed
I love how his version makes it sound like it’s mellowed down a little but seems to hit harder at the same time.
The double kicks at the end. 😂
yeah, he really sounded to slow it down!
he's playing single-hand 16th note ride pattern vs killers drummer plays two-hand 32nd note hihat pattern.. that's what gives the different feel in pace
That's the power percussion has over music. You could leave every other part alone and simply take the drum part to half time and it sounds like a completely different song. They have the power of contrast which is one of the most underused concepts in music imo.
Yeah, he was playing at halftime in those moments. Still sounded great. He didn't realize you were supposed to be flying through this song playing 16th notes on the hi-hat the entire time.😂 He cut that in half, made it sound a little more slower.
*This version needs an official recording!* 🔥🔥🔥

Here it is!
Came for drumeo but left a fan of this guy his personality is awesome
It would be rad for them to do this with every instrument independently and then put all the new parts together and see how insanely different it is from the original

Holy shit, that is actually a perfect explanation. I was having a hard time wondering why I liked it and you just literally explained it haha. Thanks for that!
Turned it into a Blink 182 vibe
Metal tends to also focus more on the heavy thumpy bass drum; for me that's what changed most in terms of signature. Still very classy and tastefully done by Dirk. I love the offbeat moments he put in in the bridge and crossover sections.
upvoting this, because it's tru
That's exactly what he did
This is incredible, he brought Mr. Brightside down to a level where it felt way more emotional than poppy. I love it.
Exactly. He took this poppy bright sound, which wasn't bad, and took it to an emotional part by quietening it down and allowing the verses to be heard.
It's amazing the difference a drummer can make. Ronnie makes it sound dance-y and pop but Dirk makes it sound emotional. I love both versions
@@Fackunator I love that drummers can drive not only timing but the 'energy' of a song. It's incredibly powerful. I love being a drummer.

The wider opening changed the whole feeling of the song. Instead of the anxiety of the fast cymbal hits in the beginning that keep the song desperate throughout, it was a slower feeling of uncertainty that built into the crisis the lyrics depict.

I wonder this a lot. Like, part of me could see a musician knowing more than me or any other big music fan, but then I also think about it like you talk about it, that they just don't have the time. I imagine their catalog is HUGE leading up to their making it.
@@TexRobNC Right! Also, the older we get the more critical we are about what we listen to and nothing beats old school anything in any genre. So I could understand him not knowing the song. This made my day. Smiled through the whole thing. Even a couple tears. Too wholesome. Thanks for this!
Idea: I know this is a drumming page, but it would be cool to now, with this version of the song made, extract the guitar from the song, give it to a guitarist to fill in his own tune, and then do the same with a bassist and then vocalist/songwriter (or whichever order is best). Kind of like the game of telephone but with music. Then you'll get to see one song completely transform into a new song.
Underrated comment right here
Great idea! I would love to see this in practice!
Amazing idea. I would love to hear it.
Yes
I honestly wouldn't change the lyrics, as they are pretty much the key component of this song, changing them would mean you have a pretty much new song, while only making changes to the instruments and singing will give you a new interpretation of the song, which is pretty much the goal of this video. Also, I'd say it's much easier to adjust your own instrument to the ones already playing, making up a whole new text on the spot seems reaaallly hard.
I of course don't wanna downplay Dirks perfomance in this video or anyone doing something similiar, just listening once to the song and going along this well with it is very impressive, but coming up with a fitting text on the spot seems so much more impossible to me, atleast if you wanna do it on a decent level. You gotta tell a story with it, every syllable has to fit and the energy has to fit aswell. (what I mean with that is, that Mr Brightside is kind off a feel good song, it's about a guy staying positive. Now imagine the text would instead be something melancholic or maybe hateful)
His drums completely changed the mood of the song to a more melancholy feel and it’s actually incredible. Love the original drums and the way Dirk interprets them here. Truly an example of a musician that knows their craft and has studied for years. Fantastic performance
It makes you wonder if, conversely, the Killers actually sped up their original drum performance, to make the song intentionally more poppy and upbeat. I've always found the lyrics quite melancholy.

@@iancraig5415 Oh shit, didn’t know he was in Soilwork. It’s been awhile, but Natural Born Chaos was one of my favorite albums.
Such a nice, considered and generous musician. Outstanding video and demonstration of craftsmanship.
@@1Deep43VAPlease check out the "stabbing the drama" album from soilwork. Awesome album and great drum work. Killer drummer.
He also did the drums for Devin Townsend's Deconstruction album! Devin has had some excellent drummers but I think his playing there was my favorite overall.
He also invented his own type of blastbeat that's pretty famous and you can hear it all over Soilwork even after he left (Dirk blast: high tempo 8th triplets with open hats on the quarter notes, made easier to sustain by alternating hands between the snare and the hats)
What a lovely humble guy and a genius Dirk is!!!
Dirk's drumming is much better! Made it mature and multilayered. Wonderful 😊
I loved the feel you gave this… iconic!
This dude just BLEW my mind and then proceeded to say "I hope I didn't let you guys down too much.." 🤯
So much talent, so much humble. 🐐
Humility**
Right? ❤
Dirk is one of the best drummers in the world and such a great guy!
Metalheads, dude. They're legit some of the chillest, kindest people on the planet.
@@d112cons That's because all their anger/sadness/pain is released in the music they make. It's really cathartic ❤
I gotta say, this whole video series is fascinating. I love hearing these drummers leave their comfort zones and show their incredible musicianship
I thought the very same and really hope they continue making these.
It's incredible, I can't get enough! I just love how much the drums can affect the feel of a song!
That's what I'm here for, not even a drummer myself
I don't think he left his comfort zone for a second here :D
That’s what it’s all about
get outside the box and you will learn.. love this guy.
The depth this song acquired with these drums is unreal... Incredible what other view can bring to the table
What a drummer and nice guys. Thanks for the content, super fun !!
What a great guy Dirk is! Seriously humble, complimentary and well-spoken. New fan here!
Yes, sir. He is very great, and I hope he has heard the original, by now!
You gonna pull those [drumsticks] or just whistle Dixie?
@@homerkenobi1914 😂
Same
Germans are way cooler than most people think.
I love how at the end he's concerned that he messed up the ending. While all of us are completely dumbfounded he is able to do this so well.
Exactly lol
Exactly.
Just want to say thanks to the audio crew for the superb recording of the drums - simply brilliant...
SO MUCH FUN!!! What a cool, humble guy! Now I gotta go listen to this again.
This video is proof of just how talented this guy is. What an artist.
You're lying to yourself
Really, why is he lying to himself?
@@rokmihelcic868 I'm pretty sure that if you asked Dirk Verbeuren if this was a good display of his talent, he would say no. Mr. Brightside is an easy song and all he did was play half-time at the beginning of it. There's probably much better proof of how talented this guy is elsewhere
@@mothamaster3000you don’t have to play fast to be talented, it’s all about the artistry which he nailed.
His version has such a big dramatic feel building up through the verses. The vibe is very different but still fits well, and with the exception of the very end of the outro, he really nailed the rest of it. The shifting tension between sections gives the chorus a lot more punch while giving the verses room to build up gradually. He killed it in one take!
Crazy, I prefer this version, there is just something about it that feels like my childhood. I don't know how else to put it. It feels good.
Absolutely, well said
it just matches the meaning of the song
It feels more romantic through the verses compared to the original. I love it!
It has a nice forward push to it--I feel like the original started with a forward momentum but ended with a kind of dragged-back feel (which just lent it a different overall feel than his version).
It's amazing how much a drummer can change the mood of a song! Love you, guys!
I know absolutely nothing about drums, just randomly popped up on recommendation- so impressed with this. Glad I watched.
I love the way he plays the verse in half time from the original. It changes the whole feel of the song.
FR. The verses feel sadder and the chorus more kinetic and positive
I've suspected for a few years now that I have beat deafness. I was surprised by this comment because I thought on first listen that he pretty much figured out the exact drum pattern as used in the original. I've gone back and forth half a dozen times now and I can discern timbral differences in the toms, but otherwise I cannot tell the difference at all. Really interesting.
@@cyborgninjamonkey oh shit, you are definitely missing some very big differences. the main one being how often the snare hits. the op mentioned half time, which basically means the snare hits half as many times per bar. the rest of this channel would be a great place to start if you want to enhance your capacity to digest the rhythms in the music you enjoy.
@@21centdregs they don't really show the part where he reacts to the original version of the song during the verse. but the chorus is more or less the same in the levels of energy
@@bluerum896 Yeah. Woulda been cool to see his reaction to the verse.
No one is going to acknowledge that Dirk turned this song from a head nodding fun party song to basically opening up the pit. Love him
OPEN UP THE PIT! HAHA GOOD TIMES
this come on at the party i’m crying in the corner
i max my speakers everytime i listen to this, he did so well.
People always become so beautiful when doing something they love and have poured a lot of time and effort into perfecting. Thanks for the video. Cool random recommendation.
Very humble and down to earth dude! Awesome drumming
