As impressive as his knowledge and skill is, I'm even more impressed by his curiosity, appreciation, and respect for all kinds of music, and his desire to impart that enthusiasm to his audience. Well done.
I love how he recognizes that the half-beat would mess him up, so he adapted the lines with high-hat fills to not loose track while keepin the half beat on the crashes. It ended up harder to perform than the original line, but for his mind work, the extra notes ended up helping him keep on track. A nice improvise perfect for a first-time performance. A true Genius.
He isn't "metal " a whole lot of people "aren't ", I'm not,....don't let it "bother you so much ", all that should matter is that "you like it" ....."CONTINUE BANGIN' YOUR HEAD"
Basically, he understands the importance of listening to something before trying to play it. This is actually something that a lot of musicians surprisingly don’t do! A lot of them rely on sheet music or chord charts, especially ones that play in function bands. And when they do listen, they only focus on their instrument rather than what all the instruments do. At least this is what many people have told me
He spends so much energy listening and then when he plays you can tell that he is concentrating on this. That’s the true sign of a quality musician, regardless of skill level.
@Derek Frampton aKa 1PaPaD1 yeah I think the only way to have not heard it ever is to be very close minded about music and making it a point to not listen to rock or mainstream mediums.

I am a metal guitarist, and Metallica has been my favorite band since I was is grade school. I've listened to Enter Sandman well over a thousand times in my life. Watching this video and listening alongside Larnell was like experiencing this song through a fresh set of ears. To hear the perspective of a drummer, particularly one who does not play metal, was truly a wonderful journey for me. Thanks for putting this video up. It has brought me an immense amount of joy today.
totally! I'm not even a drummer, jazz/pop trying to be classical pianist, lol. but it's just fascinating to me, watching this kind of thing. when someone who is so into music with all of their being and you're watching them sit around being into music, doesn't matter what genre it is. listening to music that you don't really know much about is really fun, imo.
I work in management and have had some whisperers in the workforce... I’m so worried next time I get a whisperer I’m gonna say, “I’ll take more volume”
As someone who loves music, but isn’t himself musically inclined or knowledgeable about music theory, I will always marvel at the ability of musicians to just “get” a piece of music. I wish I could hear what they hear.
It's just practice, understanding beats,2/4 ,4/4..knowing Scales and a good ear. My late brother played guitar and could listen to a song a few times then sit down and play it. I would sit for hours and listen to him play. Great play my dude!!!
I would guess he's either been doing it since before he could walk or has extensive study in music. Going to music school or something similar can put those words in your head that help to describe the sounds and techniques used, once you can convert your thoughts to music, and music to thoughts, it changes your entire perspective on music.
I love how in the listening Larnell's eyes are wide open, processing the info. Then when he's playing, he looks half asleep. He is completely in the music at that point. Epic.
Yes! Almost as if he was forgetting to use his eyes, because they weren't relevant anymore! Watching this was so beautiful... I love Metallica's early music. I just told my husband that I feel like it grabs me by the lizard brain and drags me along on an adventure. Watching someone else going on the adventure was very satisfying!
i'm not a drummer. i'm not even a subscriber. I have no idea who this guy is... but that was super entertaining. He did a fantastic job and I really appreciated the sentiments he expressed at the end. Great job
yep...no idea why or how either, but I was in awe of this guy breaking down the drums on his first listen, especially cause I don't know anything about drums! :)
I can imagine Metallica gathering around to watch this video: James: “Wow this guys pretty good!” Robert: “Yeah not bad huh?” Kirk: “silently nods with approval” Lars: “sweats profusely”
I'm no musician, so I can't fully appreciate the difficulty of what he just did, but watching him download that entire song to his head after only listening to it once like Neo downloading Kung Fu from The Matrix is truly impressive.
How many people can be told 10 names or a phone number and remember it 5 minutes later? How many dancers could replicate a 3 minute dance after seeing it once? There's more repetition in the drums but I can't imagine being able to listen and repeat something so complex after one exposure.

Yes. I was kind of hoping this was going to be like that. Still good but the opportunity to hear what he’d come up with on his own would be very, very cool.
watching tunes being deconstructed like this makes you understand why arrangement is so important. Hit songs must have an excellent and interesting arrangement even if it is a 4/4 heavy rock song
Dude became my favorite drummer. He made a mistake but he predicted exactly where he would make that mistake. That takes a world class self-knowledge, and an open appreciation for the piece at play.

Came for the music skills, stayed for the brilliant message at the end of the video. New follower now!
Agreed, it’s clearly what differentiates a profesional, all business
I love how he recognizes that the half-beat would mess him up, so he adapted the lines with high-hat fills to not loose track while keepin the half beat on the crashes. It ended up harder to perform than the original line, but for his mind work, the extra notes ended up helping him keep on track. A nice improvise perfect for a first-time performance. A true Genius.
He claims he’s not metal but then goes right ahead and says: “I’ll take more volume”. That’s a pretty metal way to say a pretty metal thing.
He had an epic headbang going on for a bit too. He's feeling it. :)
I agree lol
You gotta crank it with how the guitars over power a bit.
He isn't "metal " a whole lot of people "aren't ", I'm not,....don't let it "bother you so much ", all that should matter is that "you like it" ....."CONTINUE BANGIN' YOUR HEAD"
Hahaha
Three years later, but amazing cover and amazing talent! Well done!
I don’t know much about music but this guy is clearly educated in the art and to watch him pick it apart and comprehend it is very intriguing
👏with you
Basically, he understands the importance of listening to something before trying to play it. This is actually something that a lot of musicians surprisingly don’t do! A lot of them rely on sheet music or chord charts, especially ones that play in function bands. And when they do listen, they only focus on their instrument rather than what all the instruments do. At least this is what many people have told me
Yet he's never heard it .. .. clearly not that edumacated
“Respect the music, respect the culture”
Spoken like a profound thinker of music.
Cheers!
He spends so much energy listening and then when he plays you can tell that he is concentrating on this.
That’s the true sign of a quality musician, regardless of skill level.
Words to live by.
Still doesn't care to listen to radios or music out of his alley lol
@@mouloudo Don't have to listen, just respect.
@Derek Frampton aKa 1PaPaD1 yeah I think the only way to have not heard it ever is to be very close minded about music and making it a point to not listen to rock or mainstream mediums.
Next episode: Larnell Lewis hears Dream Theaters "dance of enternity" for the first time and plays it.
EDIT: WOW, that's an impressive reaction, thank you. Keep it up, Drumeo has to see this🤘🏻🤘🏻.
I’d pay to see that
HAHAHAHAHAAHA so funny !!!!! I like ur style !
And He Plays It with a Single Pedal....
*gulp*
YESSSSS
Wow. I'm so in love with seeing incredibly talented people doing the thing they're good at.
This guy is ridiculous, such a good ear and memory for music. Uber talented. It's refreshing to see someone like him in action.
Yeah I know auto-tunes needed because we got talent on loan from God
....and he's humble through the entire process. What a likeable person.
I really like this guy
Same lol he seems like a great person and quite intelligent , clearly
He's awesome! ❤️☺️
Hard not to.
I second that
What's not to like?
Larnell Lewis listening to his 100th Metallica song: "still open high hats okay"
Lmao
Thank you, man. Thank you.
LOL
I wasn't drinking anything, but if I were it would have come through my nose.
I think he'd finally get to Fight Fire With Fire, hear the moment of ride cymbal and his head would explode
Recently found Drumeo, and finding these very talented technical drummers is awesome
I never thought I could be so impressed by watching someone literally listen to a song
This.
Proof
Correct! He was catching every detail
Me too.
Lost in Vegas has a cool channel where they review/react to all types of stuff.
I love when he keeps saying “right”, like he is in total agreement as to the arrangement of the entire song. Great musician!!!!!
He's completely bored of the whole song lol
“Oh ok right white people music ok”
Yeah he gets the feel of the song and actually knows how to react.
@@JASONXMARIELA no he's not bored, he was in the zone. He was in sync with the song. Then when he did the drum solo he went even deeper in the zone.
@@KingDavid314 no not at all. And when he was listening to the song he was bored. He enjoyed playing his version of it thou like anyone else with his talent would.
I'm a drummer playing in a HC band and this one video actually made me better of a drummer after seeing it twice than the 10 years I've been playing.
Well said. I’m a drummer and have listened to this song as many times as you have and hearing him break it down like he did was incredible.
I've never heard about this drummer but he is incredible, congrats
As someone who loves music, but isn’t himself musically inclined or knowledgeable about music theory, I will always marvel at the ability of musicians to just “get” a piece of music. I wish I could hear what they hear.
Meanwhile : I can't remember a single beat or any single lyrics if a song isn't playing, even if it had just been played.
You can If you really want to. Just have to learn to be into the process ☺️
I can assure you DRUMMERS dont know how we do it.
Great job
same
Hahaha, I’m blown away!! Really first time! Could have recorded it for the album!!!!
no idea who this guy is nor how this video comes up on my suggested feed but holy crap i’m so glad it did. coolest video i’ve watched in a long time.
right behind you buddy., thanks YT algorithm
If you're interested in jazz, he is the drummer for Snarky Puppy. They're amazing. Lingus is an excellent intro song.
Watch the RUclips video :larnell Lewis hears song once and plays it perfectly.
Def recommend the video he did also for drumeo, that was great too
yep...no idea why or how either, but I was in awe of this guy breaking down the drums on his first listen, especially cause I don't know anything about drums! :)
I can imagine Metallica gathering around to watch this video:
James: “Wow this guys pretty good!”
Robert: “Yeah not bad huh?”
Kirk: “silently nods with approval”
Lars: “sweats profusely”
haha
😂😂😂
This guy's pretty good. Lars has absolutely no reason to be worried, though.
@Jonathan oh I totally agree! Just had a funny thought I wanted to share🤣
@@zackthompson3731 It was funny, Zack! :)
"Oh I'm going to miss that"
Channeling his inner Lars already, quick learner
👏👏👏
Underrated comment
Lmaooooo
lmao
I'm usually not riding the Lars hate train, but this was fucking funny
This guy is a real drummer. So much dynamics I love it❤
I'm no musician, so I can't fully appreciate the difficulty of what he just did, but watching him download that entire song to his head after only listening to it once like Neo downloading Kung Fu from The Matrix is truly impressive.
My thought exactly.
Me being a drummer usually only pays attention to the drums and the counts but this remembered the riffs also.
xD i love this comparing xD
That was no joke. That dude is jacked in.
How many people can be told 10 names or a phone number and remember it 5 minutes later? How many dancers could replicate a 3 minute dance after seeing it once? There's more repetition in the drums but I can't imagine being able to listen and repeat something so complex after one exposure.
I’m only ever saying “I’ll take more volume” from now on
Hahahhaahaha
🤣🤣😅😅😅😅 Amazing lol
Facts
Reminds me of “need more that cowbell”
😂🤣😂🤣😂 Same!!
Seeing him critically dissect the structure of the song is amazing.
Jedi Master
Yeah, absolutely this
Exactly ,true musical genius 😜
His playing is absolutely amazing, but his thinking out loud fascinates me.
Truly!
Larnell's drum arrangement is so well orchestrated that I can't even remember what Lars' version was like anymore.
Besides being a ferocious drummer, does this guy not seem like the nicest guy ever?
Yeah. He sure does and I believe he is!
!!!
Such a pleasurable human right?
Absolutely !!!
I was thinking the same thing.....LOL!
I cant tell if I'm more impressed by him recreating it or astounded that he's never heard it before...
Same.
as if haha. as a pro musician you have heard enter sandman before. i am willing to bet my dick on that. i guess its propably not his go to music to listen to tho
How can you be sure you haven’t heard a song before, if you haven’t heard the song before?
People in rural Mongolia have heard Enter Sandman. It’s as pop as metal gets. Should’ve gone for a less popular Metallica song.
@@kaspersderlund5573 i've never heard it before ... trust me. And y hear ALL kind of rock. I should assume to you that i didn't like Mettalica, so... that's why. But i can't deny that those guys are legends. Today i really like them. I was a rebbel teenager and i hated hear what everyone was hearing. I wanted to be the "different one" who know bands that anyone doesn't. AND I'M SORRY ABOUT MY ENGLISH... I'M NOT PRATICING MUCH.. i hpoe you understand what i wrote ^^
This guy is a class act. Talented like nobody's business. Could watch him improvise for hours. And a lovely person to boot.
Brother looks like pele
Hell yeah this was great!
Just imagine if Metallica had a good drummer like this guy!
He speaks the language. The universal language. Music.
Waitress: 'How you doing with your beer?"
Me: "I'll take more volume."
10/10
🤣
🤣🤣
Barber: "How do you want your hair?"
Me: "I'll take more volume"
*"Still open hi-hats, okay."*
He unknowingly described Lars post 1991 :P
I loled
@@toxicab23 i immediately chuckled lol
Lol'd as well 😂
Lol. Had the same thought.
🤣🤣🤣
When is Drumeo having Larnell again? He needs to hear a drumless track and go for it 😊
Agree - I'd love to hear that challenge
I find this ironic.
Yes please!
kinda feels like cheating when he hears the full track. It'd be fun to hear the jazz drummer version of a metal piece.
@@andreapayneconnally390 that's my thing he didn't do anything to it and he had the sheet music too I believe. He should have to fill in the drums.
Maestro Larnell, words fail me. I keep coming back to this magnificent set. So good!!
Whenever I see a serious musician, especially a drummer, take apart a song, I realize that I have no idea what I'm doing.
ruclips.net/video/Dh1Aoee6h2M/видео.html
д\!!!
True
Exactly what was going though my head. Realizing how deep he's in with his skills.
Dude beat boxes like a champ in his breakdown
Lol,right
That's the most chill version of metal drumming ever. He's unbelievably talented.
I’ve seen the video about 20 times , whenever I remember that it exists
It amazes me how surgical he is
that and lars is very basic.
@@MrThorp1 true. great drummer, but very simple.
trying to do Dany carey or mike portnoy is a whole different thing
I know. And I don't know exactly what it is. I know it's exactly the same notes but somehow it sounds more laid back.
There's something extra metal about this dude pushing his glasses back up his nose while he's crushing this song.
He's recalibrating his targeting system
He is the anime protagonist in a music anime about metal.
Yup, anyone who wears glasses knows a signal of recalibration and awareness.
His aggression build up at 12:26 to 12:29 is a killer
13:41 too
I love you can tell he just feels the music in his soul. Incredible drummer
Anyone else love how he listens to the music like he's having a conversation???
Because that’s what music is. Communication. And he gets it.
I am in awe of his musical brain. People talk about emotional intelligence, this man has musical intelligence
Loved how he dissected it.
I saw him the first time in this video and he's just phenomenal, that simple...👍
It's delightful. I love watching him process the song.
Larnell: plays groovy fills
Lars: wait that isn’t allowed
Lol!!!
😆😅🤣
Lars: we don't do that here
LOL
As amazing as this guy is, the performance just goes to show the feel and attitude is just important as technical ability - because the original recording has it in spades.
He analyzed that like I plan out my trips around buffet tables.
haaa!
This statement made my day
😂😂😂👌🏽
This is a winner of the Internert comment
🤣🤣🤣🤣❤❤❤❤
The words at the beginning were GREAT. A look into a pros thought process. Fascinating. I also appreciate him thinking out loud.
I don't know what's more impressive, his musical abilities, or the fact he made it to adulthood WITHOUT hearing enter sandman
Especially as a premier drummer. I mean wtf, I feel like every drummer has heard Enter Sandman.
Real talk, had it not been for being a wrestling fan watching ECW, or my brothers living with Rock Band/Guitar Hero for those years, I probably would've missed out on Enter Sandman too, tbh.
Hahaha you nailed it. Haha
bravo! great reply.
but we cannot always hear everything...I know, cause I only picked up on Snarky Puppy in 2019!!! really wished I had heard of Larnell years ago
Love it, seeing such a diverse drummer play such a popular song and even throw a little of his own flair into it was so cool to listen to.
This dude is cool af. What a talent. Probably an amazing teacher as well.
right!!!! he's a prof at some of my friends' college and apparently he's super chill
It'd be cool to see him play to a famous song without hearing the original drums
Thanks for the suggestion, Sean!
"What Would Larnell Play"
@@DrumeoOfficial that's what I thought initially!
Yes. I was kind of hoping this was going to be like that. Still good but the opportunity to hear what he’d come up with on his own would be very, very cool.
@@dmleibo totally agree. I'm sure his interpretation would blow Lars outta the water!
I love this video so much. The way it's just Larnell talking to us, letting us know his thought process...
watching tunes being deconstructed like this makes you understand why arrangement is so important. Hit songs must have an excellent and interesting arrangement even if it is a 4/4 heavy rock song
"Still open hi hats"
You can pretty much stop worrying about ever closing those babies as far as daddy Lars is concerned.
🤣
You know I was going to say, welcome to metal
😂😂💦
rofl i noticed that too, i like his subtle critique like "oh..hes going to continue using high hats... weird"
He's too drink to close his hats
Dude became my favorite drummer. He made a mistake but he predicted exactly where he would make that mistake. That takes a world class self-knowledge, and an open appreciation for the piece at play.
when you play piano but your listening to metal
Bring this man back to the channel!!!
