0:00 - Introduction
Remember the first time you heard "Enter Sandman" by Metallica?
Or maybe you've never heard the song at all.
It's one of the most popular metal tracks of all time, but those outside the metal or rock world might not recognize it.
The last time Larnell Lewis came out to Drumeo, we challenged him to write a drum part - on the spot - to a song he'd never heard before (click here to watch) and he blew everyone away.
This time, Larnell wanted to try a style he's not known for playing: metal!
If you want to see a fusion drummer try to play one of the most popular metal songs of all time, don't miss this video (you can skip to 9.33 if you just want to watch Larnell play).
01:08 - Active listening
When learning a song, he practices active listening, which includes looking for these things:
Song form: How many measures are in each section?
Tone: How does the song feel? Is it aggressive or calm?
Specifics: Any shots you should look out for?
Larnell takes an analytical approach and breaks down all the details, noticing patterns and themes and how the different instruments play off each other. Because of this, he can already hum the chorus' melody and drum part after only hearing the song once, and remembers most of the structure as well.
09:33 - Performance
While he's known for his great drumming skills, he also has excellent listening skills and a strong memory. Larnell knows what to prioritize when learning, so he's able to learn quickly. You can learn how to do it too!

Not quite sure which is more unbelievable: His extraordinary talent OR the fact that he never heard of Enter Sandman.
I hadn't even heard of Enter Sandman until I was about 14, I guess it depends on the environment you're raised in, my parents were heavy reggae and RnB listeners so that's all I heard I was young.
He probably heard it before but did not really pay attention tk it or cared to ask what the song was.
Thats whats making the video

Normal people: "Can you turn up the music?"
Cool People: "I'll take more volume."
The phrasing really reminds me of the sort of language used by Fletcher in Whiplash. You can tell this guy comes from a background with formal, professional training.
@@TyrannosavageRekt quite entertaining watching him read/memorize the drum beat. 🤘🏼
My music teacher in elementary school was so stern. If we were watching a movie and asked her to turn the volume up she would stare at us menacingly until we said "louder" instead of "up" lol
@@stonedalldayjedi533 "Can you turn louder the music?"
@@JustinTheGrey lol close. More like "would you raise the volume louder"
I wish that Drumeo had Larnell do this song with their current format, with him listening to a drumless part and coming up with it himself.
Right?! That would have been interesting!! lol
Yes!
Here's to hoping he returns with a new song in the future
Yes was thinking exactly the same. This is the first video i've seen in this format so was a bit surprised at first
Yeah same, i'm like 'wait, he can hear the drums?'
I love how he recognizes that the half-beat would mess him up, so he adapted the lines with high-hat fills to not loose track while keepin the half beat on the crashes. It ended up harder to perform than the original line, but for his mind work, the extra notes ended up helping him keep on track. A nice improvise perfect for a first-time performance. A true Genius.
"I'll take more volume" is the correct thing to say when listening to Metallica. He really is a natural
"Ill take more volume".....damn right
Natural with probably thousands of hours of dedication to his craft

I don’t play drums, I don’t listen to Metallica, I don’t understand most of what he’s saying, yet, that’s probably the third time I’m watching. Dude is so talented and charismatic.
I'm wishing to go back in time and learn drums.

He claims he’s not metal but then goes right ahead and says: “I’ll take more volume”. That’s a pretty metal way to say a pretty metal thing.
He had an epic headbang going on for a bit too. He's feeling it. :)
I agree lol
You gotta crank it with how the guitars over power a bit.

“Ooh. Ima miss THAT!” Most relatable part 😂
And.... he misses it!
That's the most chill version of metal drumming ever. He's unbelievably talented.
"I'm assuming it's 1, 2, 3, 4?".

I hope Larnell Lewis is teaching music, teaching anything. His talent is obviously immense, his attitude and way of talking about music and the world is also needed so much!
Absolutely incredible. My favorite moment: This incredibly nice, classy, clearly educationally-bent and probably classically-trained professional... 1/3 into Sandman is fighting back a snarl as only metal gives ya. Absolutely love it.

I wasn't drinking anything, but if I were it would have come through my nose.
I think he'd finally get to Fight Fire With Fire, hear the moment of ride cymbal and his head would explode
HE was able to take away the agressive playing, and still execute the song with high precision, that is remarkable, amazing, talent and technique together!!!!!!
"And so regardless of what part of the world the sun shines down on you, just know you don't need to lock yourself in". One small quote for man, one giant quote for mankind.

Incredible. I always assumed it took session drummers weeks to learn how to play for bands they're not a part of on tours. This guy has just shown how much on another level to ordinary (non musicians) they really are gifted.
Check out the "We like it Here" live album by Snarky Puppy, Larnell learned the entire set on a 7 hour flight to london.
calling it gifted is an insult - men spends million hours playing, studying, practicing. along comes a moron jo bro u so gifted...

As amazing as this guy is, the performance just goes to show the feel and attitude is just important as technical ability - because the original recording has it in spades.
mr. Lewis is not just an amazing drummer but an incredible musician. he serves the song and not himself which is how he can hear things like the up beat hits and moreso the key change. he's got chops for days and could easily be one of those drummers who has to show all of them in every song. I love these kind of drummers but Larnell is so musical. so tasteful. one of the best in my opinion. god bless you mr. lewis!!
What a scholar and a gentleman. Loved it.
I don't know what's more impressive, his musical abilities, or the fact he made it to adulthood WITHOUT hearing enter sandman
Especially as a premier drummer. I mean wtf, I feel like every drummer has heard Enter Sandman.
Real talk, had it not been for being a wrestling fan watching ECW, or my brothers living with Rock Band/Guitar Hero for those years, I probably would've missed out on Enter Sandman too, tbh.
Hahaha you nailed it. Haha
bravo! great reply.
but we cannot always hear everything...I know, cause I only picked up on Snarky Puppy in 2019!!! really wished I had heard of Larnell years ago
Love it, seeing such a diverse drummer play such a popular song and even throw a little of his own flair into it was so cool to listen to.
Next episode: Larnell Lewis hears Dream Theaters "dance of enternity" for the first time and plays it.
EDIT: WOW, that's an impressive reaction, thank you. Keep it up, Drumeo has to see this🤘🏻🤘🏻.
I’d pay to see that
HAHAHAHAHAAHA so funny !!!!! I like ur style !
And He Plays It with a Single Pedal....

Seeing him hear this for the first time made me realise how much I take this song for granted. I’ll often skip it if it’s on because I’ve heard it so many times but this video brought back to me the simple but powerful beauty of that signature riff and the way the drums support the song so brilliantly. It was like hearing it for the first time with Larnell.
I know nothing about playing an instrument and nothing about the drums but I love to see his mind work, its other-worldly to me, so talented and so personable, people that can do that are like a savant to me, I don't understand at all but I know what I like and I love it. I don't remember what I had for breakfast and he listens to a song once and plays it like that.
There's something just really satisfying about watching people who're really good at what they do.
I guess there is so much more clarity in thought that it is almost like a good teacher explaining stuff! There are no confusions.

Absolutely !!!
I was thinking the same thing.....LOL!
Watching someone who is so good at his craft dissect a tune like this is amazing. A man who is that technical walk through tune like enter sandman is awesome to watch. It was cool to see the transformation, he was very studied and near introspective in the beginning, he got a little more comfortable, loosened up and then the power of BLEEEGGGGGH compelled him to just let her rip. A lil surprised he didn't charge through the kit after. Also after seeing this I think his feet are so fast I don't know if he'd need a double pedal for blast beats. He had so much fun! So well done dude. Much Love Mr Lewis!
Oh my God!!! This was so fun to watch!!! 🙏🙏 Thank you for making this and sharing. I loved his facial expressions catching the beats. Thank you
Fascinating to hear Sandman broken down by a musician while in the ‘listening’ phase....I’ve been ‘listening’ for 50 years, and I’m still just in the ‘that’s cool’ level of critical analysis.

Important to understand, his ability to do this isn't just "Talent". It's the result of A LOT of training, education, and experience. He has knowledge about song structures and tendencies via music theory that most people don't, and is able to use that knowledge to understand a song much faster than an untrained person could.

wow. i had to scroll through a few of these videos in this series to find a song that i truly knew & could really grasp with full appreciation the talent behind the artist’s ability to align with a song completely unbeknownst to them & put out what sounds - to me - to be - if i closed my eyes - arguably, the original.
this drummer made my love for one of my favorite songs - renewed.
this artist is SO talented ! & helps me to appreciate the unbelievable talent of even those drummers in this series performing songs that - likewise - i do not know either. regardless - every drummer & every song i’ve watched in this series so far i wouldn’t have been able to differentiate from the original or not, whether i’d heard it before or not.
Even if you don't know anything about music, these videos are so interesting because it is inherently cool to see people who understand something and are passionate about it discovering something new and see how they learn it. It's just cool.

What I think when reading it: Let's find the mainstream song he can't play and break him! And if that doesn't work, let's move on to experimental stuff. But that's why I like your comment, the series would be great if it's not about the challenge but about the lessons learned.

Ima have to watch this later. Its very intereting. The analisys and breakdown is awesome
