As a Bohnam fan since I was about 12 in the mid 80s and holding “Achilles Last Stand” in such high regard I was very happily surprised to see this video pop up from Drumeo. I saw this already and it was epic The song itself is a deep cut and what Samus does with it is so cool and works just as well as the original version No disrespect to Bonzo of course Can't wait to see this 🤘😎🧐✌️
This vid appeared in my feed and I watched the whole thing, but I don't know Samus or Andrew at all. They are both cool, and I enjoyed it. I have to object though to you calling this song a "deep cut". It's THE cut on the record. A deep cut would be like Tea for One or Hot's on for Nowhere. Like ALL of their albums, it is stellar.the whole way through. The cover depicts an upper-middle class family all looking intently at "The Object". The Object represents that magic of Zeppelin's "presence" and the sum of their parts as a whole, which is greater than the individuals, great as they may be, and the magic that resulted from their collaboration. I do like though that you call John, "Bonzo", it shows some knowledge and respect, which is well deserved. Andrew states at the beginning that you can't know every song, blah blah blah, but I'm sorry, you HAVE to know the masters in their field for any instrument that you are taking seriously. If you are a drummer, you really need to know the catalogue of Led Zeppelin. Bonzo was THE MAN, plain and simple. Imagine that you are the number-one rock band in the world and for many years every album you release is better than the previous one, and your live shows are legendary. That's Zeppelin. Long live Rock 'n Roll, be it dead or alive !
Also, thanks for the Drumeo recommendation on previous video. Samus actually did a 30-day Double Bass course for beginners when he filmed this one and it was amazing! Helped me SO MUCH! ❤
Thanks for passing on your experience and insight into the different approaches and mindsets to the challenge. It reminds me of Wotld Rally drivers receiving pace notes from a co-driver. You still have to be a phenom drummer to be epic. 😊
Been seriously enjoying listening to my all time favorite band through your ears. Really fun to key in on Bonham's incredible musicianship. And 66Samus is A MA ZING!!
This was awesome, absolutely loved Samus' version... Sounded really fresh and contemporary. Amazing job dude. People are shocked when other people haven't listened to certain bands... I was in my 30's before I even 'bothered' listening to Pink Floyd, Clapton and Black Sabbath among plenty of others. Neither did a lot of my friends who were into the same music as myself. As a teen getting into music, I often heard one song by some bands, hated it because it's just not where my head was at, and you just put it to the back of the shelf until you finally mature enough to give it another shot or it happens by chance. It's just surprisingly easy to become prejudice or blinkered and ignore an entire genre for decades of your life!
Samus is a real talented guy on the kit, and this video highlights not just his skill, but his ability to fit into a song, with creativity way up the scale. Awesome and tasteful, Bonham would give Samus a high five for this performance.
Thank you for posting this video! I absolutely loved 66Samus' take - I knew it was "Achilles Last Stand" from the first note, and just laughed hard at what absolute bastards the Drumeo guys were to drop this on him. 🤣
31:15 don't forget, by the time samu got back on the kit, he had heard the song several times over, recording his voiceover. So even if it is his first time playing, he had probably memorized it all. Clearly a really smart guy and an expert drummer.
@@timmie2k3 Sorry, but no. If that was as simple, Dirk Verbeuren wouldn't have missed the ending of "Mr Brightside", of all songs. The audio cues are the brilliant part. And they are not as easy. Try having somebody saying something to you in the end of a bar where you need to listen, understand and adapt for the next part without missing a beat from what is happening during that last fill/part. It is not easy. And again, Dirk, Mr. Brightside, ending.
He got that so c!ose to the feel of the original it was uncanny. If somebody played that version to you blind you'd probably think it was just a different recording of Led Zep. Perhaps the on!y give away that it isn't Bonham is that Samus seems to push the beat a little whereas Bonham dragged slightly in that more bluesy style. Not a criticism btw, because there's nothing here to criticise, just a stylistic variation. Amazing performance and I love his pace notes approach to the arrangement - he's playing by feeling the groove, not aiming to be note perfect. Would be great to hear him taking on jazz and getting a shuffle on.
He did a great job. One thing that rarely gets mentioned in these is that when you are a drummer in a band putting drums to original music, you're typically not in a vacuum. The other members of the band usually weigh in on what you're doing. Especially the actual song writer(s) So, for them to go in blind and just put anything they feel like to it and have it sound that good is really something.
My dude, thank you SO MUCH for the kind words.

@@ryanjones4150Amen!
Insane drumming and one take with cues is mad
Worked incredibly well
Thanks dude, already watched his video, but you are totally a pro so...same as I thought!!! Thanks for what you do!!!
Best performance ever here at drumeo!
Incredible
Also, thanks for the Drumeo recommendation on previous video. Samus actually did a 30-day Double Bass course for beginners when he filmed this one and it was amazing! Helped me SO MUCH! ❤
I’ve been waiting for you to watch this one for a few weeks. Amazing.
Hope you enjoyed it!
Thanks for passing on your experience and insight into the different approaches and mindsets to the challenge. It reminds me of Wotld Rally drivers receiving pace notes from a co-driver. You still have to be a phenom drummer to be epic. 😊
That was great. Zep was known to play for hours. We saw them play for 3 1/2. Listening to this one song made me think I needed a nap.
Yup long sets
Wow, 18:01 was like a Nick Barker drum fill, that was awesome. I know Nick is one of his inspirations, so that was cool to see.
Loving "the rush beat" and slow down back into verse groove... Mighty.
Yup!
Thanks for this video! Always a fun watch 😊
That was kick ass.
And very entertaining.
Your reaction as well as his!
Great
Thanks for watching!
I love this man for his immense talent and genuine personality!❤
Awesome reaction, great choice. 66Samus is really amazing!
He sure is
I saw this a few weeks ago and what a guy to do that without knowing the song and without the drums. Excellent from this Zep/Bonham fan.
Glad you dug it!
Been seriously enjoying listening to my all time favorite band through your ears. Really fun to key in on Bonham's incredible musicianship. And 66Samus is A MA ZING!!
So glad to have you along!

Still need the interview with you and 66Samus would be drums & humor. This guy.... unbelievable what he does here thats ...no words...
I'm up for it
Absolutely blown away! He is in the discussion for the greatest drummers!
That video was insane. One take putting down his own style and it was amazing. Blown away. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙌
Samus is a real talented guy on the kit, and this video highlights not just his skill, but his ability to fit into a song, with creativity way up the scale. Awesome and tasteful, Bonham would give Samus a high five for this performance.
Super impressed!
I LOVE 66Samus!! Coolest youtube drummer ever!! If you write something on his channel most likely you will hear from him. FUCKING COOL AS HELL!
Love him!
Yes I saw this the day it came out. I had the same reaction as you did. He was great and a great guy / drummer.
Mind. Blown.
This was so fun to watch, I immediately forwarded it to my drum playing son the second I finished watching it. So cool
I follow him on Twitch and attend his streams on occasion but never knew how good he is!! Fantastic!! I cried how good it was. 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
66Samus is a f******* genius! Nailed it! Great reaction video, Andrew!
Thank you for posting this video! I absolutely loved 66Samus' take - I knew it was "Achilles Last Stand" from the first note, and just laughed hard at what absolute bastards the Drumeo guys were to drop this on him. 🤣
First time I watched this, it gave me chills! So good bro...
31:15 don't forget, by the time samu got back on the kit, he had heard the song several times over, recording his voiceover. So even if it is his first time playing, he had probably memorized it all. Clearly a really smart guy and an expert drummer.
While I get what you are saying, "memorizing it all" is too much to ask IMO. It is a 10 minute song.
@@TenisAmador it's not memorizing 10 minutes of unique playing, though. It's memorizing specific parts and the audio cues tell him which part to play.
And to just drop into the feel and bpm.
Incredible
@@TenisAmador There have been several people who nailed their first take. It isn't impossible.
Shoot. I didn't think there was a Zeppelin song I hadn't heard before, but this is a first for me too. He CRUSHED THIS!
Watched the original and now watching all the reactions. It keeps getting better. Need a 66Samus version of Achilles Last Stand on spotify.
YES!
He did a great job. One thing that rarely gets mentioned in these is that when you are a drummer in a band putting drums to original music, you're typically not in a vacuum. The other members of the band usually weigh in on what you're doing. Especially the actual song writer(s) So, for them to go in blind and just put anything they feel like to it and have it sound that good is really something.
was hoping you would react to this. he was super tight and inserted himself really well. played drums well too.
Gavin Harrison also uses vocal cues during his shows with porcupine tree, mostly because they sync up with video
Oh wow!
He is one of the best on scene with people like Siberiano.... He's a beast in drums....
That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen! 🤘
