A168 is the best for me ☺️ it keeps the retro look of the A158 but doesn't look too tiny on male wrists. Also the illumination is really usefull. One time i could light my way out of a dark room after electricity failed and i didn't have my phone charged. For water resistance - i had it in the shower very often in the last three years and even went surfing with it a few times. no problems at all
The A168's even, bluish-green glow was the clincher for me. Just like any Timex I buy is probably going to have Indiglo. There's just something about it.
Yeah me too, I had this watch when I was in grade school that was in early 90's. Now its September 2023 and I bought another one. I'm glad casio still produced these vintage watches, I never liked smart watches as you have to charge it every now and then and just when you need to use them they fail you. This watch has everything you need in a wrist watch time date illumination alarm timer all in a minimalist design.
I love the A168. Just has a bit of swag that catches the eye of average passing people. To the other watch collectors out there, when they see you wearing this watch they're asking; is he one of us? Lol
Me too is an overall awesome watch. I shower with it without any issues... and once I fell on a lake doing Kayak and I swam with it and it didn´t get damaged!!
A168 all hands down! 35 years later and the patina is great and not a single scratch on the glas! Yes this one of mine is from 1980+ ish and still works like a charm!
@@uto74As far as I know, the first model with this design was launched between the late eighties-early nineties, however, what has changed over time are the modules they use. @@daveallen2455 Some Casio models, including A159, are assembled by fully automatic production line since 2018, which means country of production does not make a difference in term of build quality / QC anymore (And Casio even explain to its shareholders that the production cost was nearly identical so that the a production line was setup in Yamagata because the it cost no more than in China/Thailand), so I'd say, let's forget about the MIJ (Made in Japan) myth (Casio' premier line, Oceanus and MTG/MRG, are still handmade in Japan which make a difference, but not for the automated production line in Japan).
I have the A158 and have just ordered an A163 for £17 from Amazon. I think the 63 has the coolest retro look out of them all. Not fussed about the weak light. It does the job and that's how I remember it as an 80s kid. A168 is on steroids and doesn't have that slim, retro elegance IMO.

Those Swatches and Fossils from 20-30 years ago have been missing for quite a while and it's high-time to get things going again. Great to know that Casio has a respected reputation again!!! #LoveThe80s
Every watch collector should have an F91-W, simply because it's so iconic. The backlight is awful but most digitals were the same back in the day. I had been planning to buy the A700 for the last 3 months. Came back yesterday to watch your review on that for the 6th time and finally ended up buying it. :D
Fantastic round-up and it's so awesome to see someone really championing the retro casio low-budget part of the market. I 100% prefer an affordable quartz digital watch to affordable quartz analog watch. It's form following the function and principle. Electric both on the inside and on the face.
Absolutely agree that the A700W is the best. Super thin, super light, and super inexpensive, and super comfortable. Comes in gold or silver. I've got both. Amazzing watches!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a bunch of Casios - the a700 is my favorite: very slim, legible from any angle, great backlight and can wear with anything, the a158 is also awesome but backlight nonexistent, the a168 is great too but it is chunky
I have the A163. For me it looks more retro and beautiful than the others. But i have to say i am not wearing the A163, it is just a display model for me as an collector.
The A700 and B640 both look great! I personally would rather prefer the A700 though, I really like the slim look. Now I also know what I'll give my sister for her birthday. :D
All casio watches for me is from good, great to awesome.. you cannot go wrong no matter what model you choose.. I have 3 different vintage casio marlins, A168, A700, G-shock GW-5000U, F91W & the Back to the future Calculator watch.. now planning to get the AE1200 & the F105.. all of my Casio is my favorite..
B640 and B650 are my favorites out of the group design/looks wise, but the most comfortable will probably be the F-91WM. I have the F-91 in both black and "gold" and they are so light I often forget I am wearing one.
I still use A158 & A168 model and i love A168 very much but A158's screen much more sharp than A168. In future i want to buy A700 cause i loved amber color backlight! Also A164 looks good and reminds me 90's or 80's.

The A158 looks so classy. It looks better in metallic than the plastic/resin. And the F21w looks better in resin than the metallic, innit opinion. The others look good to, but the 158 is so nice I have two of them
Hi Ben, here's an idea for a future roundup: why not do a roundup based on interesting features for inexpensive digital watches. Like for examble: one issue I have with the cheaper Casio watches (and even with the otherwise really, really nice Lineage series) is the fact that even though they have multiple alarms, they don't have alarms that can be set on weekdays/weekend days (or a day by day alarm). Since I find it a pain to enable/disable the alarms on these watches, I just don't use them. So if there were a cheap digital watch that did have day by day alarms, I'd probably buy one (and one for each of my children). Sounds like a good idea to you?
We recently found and revived my dad's old A163. It's now 30 years old and was worn for many years by my father and after that by my mother, until she got her first phone. Does it have scratches? Yes. Does the 12h/24h button feel like it doesn't want to do it's job anymore, but still does it? Yes. Could I just get a F105 till I buy a G-Shock? Yes. Do any other watches have this emotional worth to me? No. I will buy a G-Shick Square soon, but till then I will wear this one, and maybe even after that on some days.
Great video Ben! One watch that could of been in this line up is the A178WA-1A It has a bigger face with large digits, a dual time too and Illuminator back light. I like all of these and want to get next the silver Casio F91w
I kinda like that A700, but for me, it would have to be the B640, simply because the lack of a countdown timer is a deal breaker. I think if Casio wanted to do the nostalgia/retro/classic thing, why they keep skipping over one small detail escapes me. That little detail involves the days of the week. Instead of having the letters change every day, what they used to do is have the two letter codes printed along the top of the crystal, SU MO TU WE TH FR SA, then they had an LCD segment that would move over one position at 12:00:00 AM every day. There was at time when all digital watches had that, but I suspect it was more to do with LCD/screen real estate than anything else. Still, it would be nice to see that one little detail show up every now and then.
I have casio a163 and i love them so much, wearing them for a year almost everyday, still looks good (but paint a little bit destructed near the back cap), i hope casio will make similar steel watches with wva (radio controlled) and solar panel. Hello from Russia !
Does anyone know why Casio uses American date format (MM.DD) when practically the rest of the world uses DD.MM ? And why is it not adjustable at least? I mean technically this should be no issue. It is really myterious why they don't give the customer the option to change the date format. Even more mysterious when there are a few Casio digitals which actually have that option.
the best casio watch is the vintage marlin series with all stainless steel & still water resistant till now.. I have 3 different models of vintage marlin & for me it is better than G-shock it is the perfect watch in my opinion..
I always enjoy your videos. On this topic, I have a couple of metallic Casio watches; the A700 on the mesh bracelet and one not mentioned in the video, the Solar AL190WD-1A, which does not have a back light.
Excellent comparison! Just a quick note, RUclips had randomly stopped giving me notification when you upload. I don't know how many other people this is happening to but you might want to let RUclips know.
FYI A158 have a functional difference in production series and by country. WA-1JF vs WA-1JH for example F models have plastic(2010-2020), H models (2021~) have *mineral glass , the besels are both still resin,
damn you missed the best one! casio A159WA-N1. it's just like the A158, but with a slighty different face. it's made in japan (better building quality!) and costs ony like 10-15 bucks more than the A158 :)
yes but i don't blame him for not mentioning it, it's so similar looking to the a158 and the name is also almost the same. Only a real casio enthusiast really knows.
My new 'beater' is a B640, because as far as I can tell, it is the only one of these with a 24h stopwatch, which is important to me. For me it's metal bracelet is very comfortable, though I have noticed that it occasionally catches a hair when putting it on or off.
The thing with the mat versions is that they look even more plastic than the regular black ones. And in my view look very cheep(as in crappy) Like the A168 out of the batch. Also in the "metal" range is the World Time Illuminator(Casio Royal) AE1200W which has 100 meters WR. And is in the same price range.
Great video Ben , I have a number of Casio's including the A168 and A700 on mesh, both get plenty of wrist time, I also love my WV-59 which has the date as you like it D/M/Y. keep up the good work, stay safe.
No love for Casio A500? it has more features, like world time and more! I own one and also F-91. Also B650 has a black version with negative LCD and it looks like a Darth Vader watch, very cool
I have a SDB-500W just under the screen of my computer, i got it when i was a kid, 25 years ago, still working and i use it for it's countdown timer. The "backlight" on it is the crapiest thing ever, it looks like a tiny light bulb which is so dim, the photons coming from it don't reach the other side of the dial. But still, i love it.

No idea. But it hacks me off too.
Because MM/DD is better.

My A500WEA turned up yesterday, love it.
Love my a 158 but hate how easily it scratches
Need a sapphire glass version will be happy to shell out extra for it
Finally my all time favorite.. the A163 on BWC.
I have the F91WM-7A on a grey NATO. it's more comfortable than any of the bracelets or the silicon strap, and it looks perfect too.
I have the Casio 1000 DW 280 which my mother bought me back in 1982 - works fine and is in good condition.
Ben, what’s your budget for reviewing Casios? 😀
the best casio watch is the vintage marlin series with all stainless steel & still water resistant till now.. I have 3 different models of vintage marlin & for me it is better than G-shock it is the perfect watch in my opinion..
I have epilepsy and you won my heart when you mentioned epilepsy warning, love you bro ❤
WA-1JF vs WA-1JH for example
F models have plastic(2010-2020), H models (2021~) have *mineral glass , the besels are both still resin,
I think the Casio A-159WA has a way better bracelet, to bad it wasn't in this review... great vid though. I do like the B640 design.
A700 and A700 WE are same?
Absolute great video firstly. I am getting A168 for Christmas, I am very excited
Man this videos perfect!! Clear, orderly -nice gloves- love all the angles!! Thanks so much
A700 and A700 WE are same?
damn you missed the best one! casio A159WA-N1. it's just like the A158, but with a slighty different face. it's made in japan (better building quality!) and costs ony like 10-15 bucks more than the A158 :)
yes but i don't blame him for not mentioning it, it's so similar looking to the a158 and the name is also almost the same. Only a real casio enthusiast really knows.
Today I bought one vintage casio. And now find is the 159 one of the Best because is made in Japan! :)
My new 'beater' is a B640, because as far as I can tell, it is the only one of these with a 24h stopwatch, which is important to me.
For me it's metal bracelet is very comfortable, though I have noticed that it occasionally catches a hair when putting it on or off.
Wearing my A168 right now and loving it.
For me Casio AE- 1200WHD-1AV is the best 🙌
Got the A700 a week ago. It’s awesome. Retro, but clean, and unobtrusive. Funny enough, I’ve been wearing it more than my Tudor lol.
Casio B600 series is just OP.
Worn the hell out of the black model for a few years now.
The thing with the mat versions is that they look even more plastic than the regular black ones. And in my view look very cheep(as in crappy)
Like the A168 out of the batch.
Also in the "metal" range is the World Time Illuminator(Casio Royal) AE1200W which has 100 meters WR. And is in the same price range.
Great video Ben , I have a number of Casio's including the A168 and A700 on mesh, both get plenty of wrist time, I also love my WV-59 which has the date as you like it D/M/Y. keep up the good work, stay safe.
which one would you choose if you had to choose one?
The A700 but WV-59 comes a close second that's just me
They all look the same and are very similar in display. Just get the a158w. It is cheap, lasts for more than 10 years and is just amazing
I have the A164. It’s the same watch Sheriff Hopper wore in Stranger Things
I like the A168 the best, but they seem hard to find.
Does anybody know why most of these watches are missing a countdown timer? It's literally the only thing that I notice the lack of when wearing...
I really love your videos and your sense of humour! Please keep it up, Ben!!
Huh? So are they metal or not?
Great review, as usual, Ben. I really like the A700. Your comment "Brothers from a different mother" was hilarious.
No love for Casio A500? it has more features, like world time and more! I own one and also F-91. Also B650 has a black version with negative LCD and it looks like a Darth Vader watch, very cool
I love my A500!
Just got one, it's great.
I was thinking b640 or a168 what do y’all recommend?
