Frankly speaking, almost all Casio digital watches are better than F91W. But F91W is always the cheapest, that makes it the most special and legendary.
Personally it's not the price that makes the casio f91w the best watch for me, but how lightweight and practical it is at the same time. It's an amazing watch
@@webstime1 Indeed, i would say it is an overall package, and at a price of a meal. Even the look of it is still iconic of the 70s, details down right to its rubber strap pattern is reminiscent of those era steel bracelet layout.
and it’s what made Casio a God-tier brand✌🏻
@@hathaway.1166 u must b a fan of Nico Leonard.
@@JS-ev4xc I like him, but this is also my own take on the brand, we just happened to have the same mindset;)
One thing that most watch channels don't seem to understand is that a lot of people want a F91W because it's a F91W, they don't want a better version of it
@RaniaIsAwesome F-91W light isn't good enough to actually read the time. The only drawback on a great watch.
@@WillHall there's always the f105 with that backlight
That’s a dumb argument. Nostalgia slaves…
@@WillHall I used mine last night in the dark. The light isn't great as we all know but I could tell what time it was. If a person has vision problems they may struggle but in general, for the few times I use it in the dark, it's ok.
This is so true
the f-91w is casio's entry level watch, every other model they sell is supposed to be better
f-91w achieved cult-status(?) I think that's what he's getting at.
I upgraded my F-91W by opening it up and filling it with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. There you go, waterproof and a conversation piece hehe.
Especially the g shock!!
Not seen the black dial version of the W217H before and I have to say it looks great! Really clear too, unlike the awful one on the steel A1000 series. Great find Dave!
Thanks Ben! I really like the look of it too, and legibility was surprisingly good. Didn't really have any trouble until I started trying to film it on camera and then I noticed some viewing angle issues. But in the wrist I hardly had any problems with it.
@@JusttheWatch Hi sir very nice review and i am confuse between casio f91w(black silver) and 217h(in video with black screen)
Which will you recommend ???? Please reply
@@gurmandersingh8821 the w-217 is better than the f-91w, but it's also bigger. If you want something really small and light weight, the f-91w might be a better choice, but the w-217h has better water resistance, a better back light, and a bigger, easier to read display. For me the f-91w feels too small, so the w-217 beats it hands down.
@@JusttheWatch may i know what is ur wrist size, i need it as a comparation from this clip 05:25
What about the W800H ?
F91W is the cheapest, most available retro digital watch that can give you nostalgic vibes than no other watches right now. Can't beat it at that category.
Unexpectedly, this has become one of my favorite watches. I love how giant the numbers are. Kinda a modern day “easy-reader” in that regard. It has everything you need and nothing you don’t
Ok grandpa. You like big fonts, we get it.
@SPNKr Death is closer than you think old man.
@@ThisIsGoogle I'm in my 20s and a marine. And I like the big font too. You're an internet tough guy aren't ya ?
@@ThisIsGoogle and it's coming to you mate 😩
I have one of these! I can't believe you are reviewing it! I never thought I'd see it on RUclips! I've had it about 9 months. I bought it at Walmart on clearance for $4! Yes! 4(four) dollars! It's my only digital watch. I just couldn't pass it up for $4. I love it, it's my go to for hanging around the house or grab n go. It's a great little watch.
That's a great deal!
😂😂are you sure that's an original watch
@@webstime1 Hold the bottom right button in for a few seconds. If the word CASIO comes up on the screen it's genuine.
If the light is good it is a fake.
The W-800H is also a great watch. maybe an even better alternative. Waterproof to 100 meters. Has a second timezone. And has next to the date and day, also the month and year on the screen. (Not something you really need. But it looks cool.)
thats why its my swimming/outdoor/beater watch
@Douglas Pantera I know.
@@HumoristUnion Well the day on itself is not very usefull either. Even without looking at my watch I know what day of the week it is.
@@HumoristUnion nah i sometimes forget even the year im in, also the month
It's my everyday work watch. Love it.
You can always add one of those glass-foils for the mineral of the watch face, to protect it from scratches. If you look up stuff like that you will often find already cut foils like that for certain Casio watches and i'm sure the W-217H model has one made for it as well. It's totally worth adding to a watch especially if it's your daily beater.
I agree its a better watch, but to be fair, it's almost double the price of the the 91W. I also think part of the charm of the 91w is the limited functionality (like the backlight), which gives a very nostalgic feel.
The negative display mod is something i always loved on the 91.
Seeing it come factory on this is amazing. Will definitely grab one of theese
I like the fact that this channel presents cheap watches for those who don't have a lot of money. Well, I don't even have any money, but I still like the videos very much :D This Casio W-217H looks great. Vintage, minimalist, cheap... I think it's okay to wear some casual outfit and going downtown or ssimply to tatying at home. Wonderful orange detail when you push light on. Thanks for sharing!
I'm a huge Grand Seiko fan. I currently own two and have owned three in my lifetime. My most recent purchase was a Casio A700. It gets more wrist time than my Snowflake does at this point. 6mm thickness ftw!
I have this version of a W217 H. I swapped out the module for the non-blacked out version. It is now my favorite of all my cheap Casio‘s. In fact I think I like it better than my G-Shock models. Looks so cool and classic. The fact that it doesn’t break the bank makes it even more fun for me.
Hello. What do you mean by "swapped out the module?"
@@synapticflow The digital clock inside the case is called a module. This version has a reverse display.
@@labnine3362 it's called negative display. Actualy, you can make non negative display to negative display by your self easily, just change the led polarizer.
@@arienuzankhabibpranata Wait can you also do that with a Casio tough solar watch?
@@isaacalzate8262 i dont know, maybe you can search the tutorial in youtube. I only found the tutorial for non solar type.
Coincidently as I watch this video I am packing my Casio 240 DW-5500 in a box to send it to the Casio repair center in New Jersey. I made the mistake of lending it to a friend and he disabled the alarm and time signal functions. This is the very early G Shock and in those days the hour was announced with two beeps and the half hour with one beep. The other thing I liked about this was that the chimes were very much louder than what they use today. If my watch was in a different room in the house I could still hear it, even with a tv or radio on. Sadly, during the course of the years they turned down the volume and did away with the half hour chime.
Looking forward to when I get it back and I can hear those chimes again. Thanks for the video. Enjoyed watching it.
EL backlight looks cooler, but those LEDs save power.
Not much use in power saving if the feature barely works

F91W? Agreed. Royale? Does its job.
Casio is an heroic brand because offers a good reliable watch to everybody, helping them, improving their lifes then, from just 15 $. This is heroic!!
Thank you Dave!
Saludos!!
If the F-91W fit my wrist, it would be my one and done! No question about it. It's nostalgic, iconic and super accurate! It literally keeps up with my atomic watches. It's just THAT good. So my next alternative is the 217h. I love it. I love the way it makes me feel. Memories. And not to mention, it looks absolutely amazing! I have about 20 other Casio's from the cheapest F-91W to my most expensive Casio Oceanous S100 and GW 5000u 1JF and everything in between. Even those watches don't give me that "good feeling" like the 217h does.
The W217H Is so good. The 217 and the Royale are my 2 absolute favorites. As a mechanic, the 217 is the work watch, and the Royale the daily driver. And both would even be suitable in reversed roles quite happily.
This watch is so 80's I love it!
Reminds me of the Delorean car.
Silver, black and all those hard angles.
The F105 is a nice upgrade as well. It’s a little bit bigger of a case, it has EL backlighting and has a similar color scheme.
For me always DW-5600E.
And the 5610 ? Tough solar and multi band 6 o.O
One of the greatest watches ever made 👍🏻
not valid for the small wrist team 😂
The thing with G-Shock is...Why bother paying extra with extra bulk?
I've never had a regular Casio fail on me. So unless you're doing extreme sports or something and have to have a watch on, it just seems like overkill.
For me Casio WS1400H-1BV. The 1400H is a Tank
Love this watch. I bought this for playing golf. Hardly feels like it's on the wrist and doesn't matter if it gets scratched up, best value £20 watch available.
I bought both black and silver versions and swapped the displays. The black with negative display looks awesome. Ebay'd the silver with positive display and made my money back as I didn't like the silver paint finish too much.
That's a great idea!
I'm thinking on doing this, it is easy to be done?
@@pakenche8661 super easy. You just need a jeweller's screwdriver to remove the back plate. Once that is off, the whole display comes out as one part to be swapped. Just make sure not to lose the rubber water seal gasket.
Was looking for a big wrist Casio that fits to yellow and beige clothes but passed on the yellow G-Shocks because they look like toys. Then stumbled over this video, noticed that there's also a gold and redgold version, insta-bought all 3 colors - and still saved 20 bucks against a single yellow G-Shock!
Thanks mate! 👍
Totally agree with you. Last year I was toying around with the idea of buying watches again after a more than ten year period of not wearing or buying watches. The F91 looked appealing as it would be a nostalgic purchase, though I am old enough to have owned the earlier models. However, I was worried that it would be in fact too small; I have the same size wrist as you.
When I saw the e W217h, I decided to go for it. Yes a modernized and better F91 in every way. And you are right about the strap, much more comfortable than other Casio bands.
As to future reviews, almost any Casio digital is fun. But please do not forget Casio analogues. Especially the MTP, Enticer and Lineage lines. All cheap, many good designs and all around interesting watches.
I'm definitely scoping out some of their cheap analog watches, thanks for the suggestions!
Your videos are getting better and better. I enjoy your work. Thanks.
The production quality on this video is very nice. Love the music choices too. Good job.
Thanks for making this video. I had just ordered the F91W, and the light was a dealbreaker. I am sending it back after getting the W-217H. It is a much nicer watch. I did find some adapters that allow the use of 22mm NATO straps on this watch.
I do have the same problem with the F91W's light; and you're right. This W217H's light is better than F91W's. Plus the 50M water resistance is also great. As always, nice video. 😊 Loved it. 💟
I just picked up one of these based on this review. Great watch! The display is larger than the F91 so easy to read without specs! Thanks for posting.
where did you buy it from? I can't find it online
@Shravan Uchil I’ve seen it on Amazon
This is perfect for those with larger wrists. My daily beater for 2 years now. Still holding up well. Only problem i noticed is that the strap replacement, not easy to get compared to the f-91. Its 18mm but you need that tapered style strap for the best fit.
I believe the casio AE-1200 straps fit.
I am using A158W for more than 3 years so far. I loved F91W but wanted it on a bracelet. I don't understand the critics on lighting of the watch. I use it every day when checking how long it takes for my daugthers to fall a sleep and it's not hard to read it. One's eye sees better the dial than the camera. It's not like it's completely not readable. Other thing. The W217H is better I agree with your arguments but it's missing something. This perfect proportions and compact size od A158W or F91W.
Just get the casio W800. Inexpensive (under 20USD), great backlight, 10 year battery, dual time, stopwatch, timer, alarm, hourly chime, and 100m WR. It does everything both these watches do plus way more for a similar price. In my opinion it looks super clean too though that's a personal take. Definitely one of the best casio watches out there especially considering its price range
I bought one today!! $15.88 @ Walmart. Black with blue band. Love the 5 bar WR and back light. The slightly larger size looks good on my 7" wrists.
I actually bought W217HM & B650WD. I swapped both watch parts where I paired W217HM case with B650WD module & stainless steel band to create a bigger version of A168WGG
This Casio (F91w) has literally been about since time began for many of us, I remember a classmate had this in 1982, it was class above my made in China unbranded I had at that time. I honestly can’t recall the other Casio.
How could you remember f91w in 1982? They were introduced in 1989
The 80's synth reminds me of the Kung Fury movie. If you haven't seen it yet, it's HIGHLY recommended:,))
give respect to the legendary f91w.
So I had this in black. Fantastic watch for £17. BUT a friend commented saying ‘what is that, it’s ugly!’. I think in black it looked a bit too tool-y and chunky for my style. Still a lot more handsome than a G-Shock.
In terms of F-91 upgrades (I agree it’s too small and cheap-y) I ended up going style/quality over specs and got an A1000M
Great comparison - really useful that you gave the functionality of the W2 - I'm always taken aback by the number of rambling twenty minute reviews of watches that leave such essential information out. I'm also definitely with you on the daily chimes. So simple, and yet it helps me to focus more too.
The F91W has been worn by everyone from Osama to Obama, 10 bucks and a totally loved pos. Absolute classic and legendary status
🤣👍
After bingeing on Casio for some time I've narrowed it down to the A1000 white dial, basically a metal F-91W, the A500WA-7 World Time, the sleeker brother to the AE1200 & a green CA-53W calculator with a positive display module swap. Sorted.
I decided to buy this to avoid the f91W copies, and can't be happier, the water resistance is simply perfect, have taken it to swimming pools and rivers. The backlight is nice and the size of the numbers. The only thing to make it perfect is a g-shock case to avoid overscratching (which would increase its price tenfold), for the rest, simply an excellent watch.
Nice video. I bought this watch in the UK last year for £20 I changed the silicone strap to a more bulky version which I think makes the watch look better.
I keep buying these. I like to change them from time to time. Sometimes I damage the watch when working with them. Great value for the money spent.
These low cost watches are excellent value for the money spent. These quartz watches are very accurate for the price. When I get these types of watches I adapt a NATO band to them. As for accuracy I find most of these types of watches can keep to about 5 to 8 seconds per month. With these low cost watches you don't have to worry if you accidentally damage or lose it. Simply buy another one. Great value for the money spent.
I just don't understand the obsession so many people have about water resistance. I don't go swimming but if I did I'd simply take my watch off before I got in the water and when I shower I'd take my watch off, just as I take my clothes off. So why do I need a water resistant watch? I think this applies to most watch wearers.
For 25~30 USD, I think the Casio A700W looks amazing. A classy, sleek, slightly whimsical "retro" business casual aesthetic.
For some silly reason I got caught up in watch snobbery and even thinking digital watches were for unsophisticated humans and analog watches showed you can actually tell time. I remember people bashing digital watches and praising analog. Kids wanted to be cool and be able to tell time so they went for analog.
At 56 I bought an casioak and love it but I just got the gw-m5610U tough solar radio controlled and I am really happy with it. It looks good on my 6 inch wrist and I wear it at work and it gets banged around on steel and there are no scratches and it looks like new. My other watches, even working retail, the crystal scratched up. I like the idea of mechanical watches but will never buy one knowing what they require to keep running.
I thought I would never step down to casio but for me it is now a step up.
For me you are the honest reviewer...on RUclips.❤
Recently got this and change the strap to metal and looks awesome. Loved the negative display.
Your videos are getting better and better
I have something similar, I forget which, what I liked was it can be changed to a 24 hour clock when the railways also started to use the 24 hour clock. It can beep every hour. The night light was useless. The battery only lasted a short time and only one jeweller stocked the batteries.
I've had my GW9200-1 for....... 12 years now? absolutely zero maintenance, even after a dive, though i've never even come close to the "650" feet.
Yes it costs 10x more, but it has been solid, and most important for me, no interference, and thought into it
for an "impulse purchase" because i was mad at yet another broken watch, i've been happy with it
I've used my f-91w on many freediving training sessions and even taken it to a depth of 25m - I don't really need more water resistance. Yeah the light sucks, however weighing in at only 20g I don't notice I am wearing it. I even fall asleep with it on, something I never do with other watches.
I'm 34 I only wear f91w since I'm like 5 year old, they are bullet proof I free dive well over 10m and still no water comes in, I surf too and never had any issues either... It's the best watch on earth period
Love the classic look of this watch! There is impact.
W-217H is perfect with the AE-1200WHD strap
I have a couple of F91Ws. I busted the mounting points on on and stuck velcro to the back of it and it's now attached to my bike. 4 years out in all elements, probably another 6 as a regular watch before that. Still perfect functionality. I will look at this one, cheers for the recommendation
Just brought the Casio G -Shock model 2339 I love it so much love the Electro Luminescence backlight very bright
For accuracy nothing beats most any quartz watch. It is amazing how they can make a watch so cheap in price. Replacing the battery is nearly the cost of the watch! I wear a lot of Casio watches, but I tend to buy the higher end of the G-Shock watches. Timex has a few models that are excellent, but they are more costly.
I bought it thanks to you. It's great.
Thanks Dave. I'm glad to have found your channel. I love the idea of a reoccurring "Casio Quick Look" segment. One of the watches that first got me interested in this style is the Casio AA-85 (I think), which was featured in the "countdown" scene in the 1983 action film Blue Thunder. With it's unique digital spiral complication, I always wanted one like it. You can still pick up these as vintage pieces from various online sellers, but usually they're either expensive or in horrible condition or both. I'd be very interested in hearing your take on an inexpensive, modern equivalent.
negative display framed by silver colored case looks pretty cool for me. that watches like a zebra, dark strap crossing to silver case and on to dark screen and on to light dial.
Thanks for the video. That was fun.
- I've had my share of those f-91Ws... They are great. I usually wear them out with the buttons eventually going non-operative after a while. I should try to pick up the W-217H next time I go to a big-box store.
With that black screen one needs to always switch on the light to see the time even in semi dark places. Imo
I modded my f91w with a Seiko nylon strap. It is my travel watch and it is perfect for my purpose. It's been on many drunken adventures through Detroit, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto, and Europe. I don't remember most of it 🤣😂😂🤣
This negative display seems to fix one problem I find with the w-217h/b650 is the screen placed way below the glass and it's even more noticeable due to the shadow it engender. This version look so musch better and yet legibility still looking satisfying !
In Vietnam, Casio F91W, F94 and many legendary wristwatch of Casio are iconic, affordable watch all the time. A old-but-gold F91W is not expensive, to buy a F91W you just pay only VND150000-350000 (one hundred thousand dong to three hundred and fifty thousand dong), which depends on your payment ability ; used watch have cheaper price, refurblished one have higher price, I can give it to friends without hesitation, no buy and sell, it is so cheap and easy to find on marketplace, watch shop. I given one to my close friend, now I have been using a G Shock DW9052 for six months, just US$68.4 (converted from VND), a good watch that i can use everyday, to next year and so on until I wanna replace it with a better G Shock, price is not a problem.
Agreed, and with a big wrist, it's the one to go with.
The new F91w and steel A158w (my favorite) have much improved backlight. Better than either shown in this video. I have a slim wrist so the size is a plus. Add on the iconic look and the only benefit of this one is the 50m WR.
Am a little bit hesitant whether to go for A-159WA-N1 or W-217HM-9AVDF.....i think i equally like them both
@@mohameddawood97 just get both
Will add nicely to my collection next to a Vacheron Constantin
I dig your channel. After years of mechanical snobbery, and frightful amounts of money spent, I caught the G Shock bug. I love watches that you don't have to worry about, or hell, I don't even have to set my G shock that receives an atomic clock signal every night. Still love the Nomos's, Omegas, Tudors and JLCs, but a digital watch goes with me everywhere now.
The F91-W with all of its fame is great, unless you have large wrists. I have a 7.5" wrist (that pretty often can swell to around 7.65-7.75" when I'm active) and I am on the last or second to last notch. I think I am going to end up returning the F91-W and get the W-217H. I had a F91-W as a kid and I plan on it being the first watch for my kids who are showing their own interest in watches (they like the lights and lume on my watches). Unfortunately, I can't relive the nostalgia built into the F91-W for myself but I'm hoping I can get a piece of it with the W-218H.
I just wish Casio would make some of these great little digital watches with a metal case.
I have the W-217H-1A for the closest F91W look. Viewing angle is superb compared to my other LCD Casio watches and for a retro geek, the looks and functionality really makes me question owning watches over 100 times more expensive
Just caught the Casio bug and bought the F91W and the 217H and as of right now they are practically the same price. I got the 217h at Wal-Mart for $15.88 regular price and the F91w from Amazon for $14.34. I could not find a $10 F91W. I like them both but the 217h is better and for only $1.54 more it is the winner to me for normal wear. Although I do appreciate the general legacy and collectability of the F91W which is why I bought both.
I like f91w because its so thin, and it looks good on the hand, just like some black color bracelet. Has time date everyday with forever battery. If I wasn’t wearing my apple watch id still prefer the f91w
1:16 Isn't that actually DOUBLE the price, thus defeating the Geek Chic of a budget watch? The whole reason we like the f-91 is because IT IS that good of time piece for half this price. You can't be picky about it. It's a cute puppy. If you're leaving the f-91, why stop here? Why not keep goin' $20 more and get the entry level G-Shock square? Another great watch for the price.
Right? For 20 bucks they could have at least made the watch case be metal too.. but noooooo......
thanks austin powers!!
I’d never even checked, but apparently my cheap Casio watch is a W-217H. Looking forward to learning more.
What watch model is that in 00:03:57 ?
Kinda everybody knows Casio digital watches, but Citizen's Q&Q budget brand also have some retro looking watches, like the M173J series. If you want something similar yet different.
it’s a homage isn’t it?
it’s still slick tho
The downside is the resin strap and watch body. I'm looking to replace my A158W but every current model has a downside. Never owned a mechanical watch. Been wearing Casio digitals since 1982 and not likely to change any time soon :)
A cool watch. Might buy that next as an alternative to my W96H. The F91-W is a bit small. Bought one for the beach, replaced today with the WS1300.
I have a Casio W-735H and it's been running over 10 years on the same battery !
A comparison without actually putting them side-by-side. And forced to watch your face more than the watches itself. Good video.
I have bottom of the bell curve wrist size for a man. Always using the smallest 1 or 2 notches on straps. I want the better features in the tiny f91 body!
I have the B650 version of this, which is basically the same watch but on a bracelet. I have both negative and positive display models. The F-91 fits me very well and so do these. Great watchs for next to nothing. Just grab them all 😄
That’s why we tell our wives, “just one more watch“.
I love Casio watches. I've been thinking of getting a new cheapish digital one for a while. My current watch is fairly decent. It is a pilot-style watch. It is not a Rolex or anything like that but it has an ETA movement inside. The only thing I don't like about it is it loses about 5 minutes of time every two or three weeks (even after internal adjustment) and I have to constantly correct it. On the odd occasion I want to relax at home without wearing a watch well I can't with that because if I leave it for more than two days it will run out of juice.
I prefer those negative types of displays on the Casio watches to the traditional LCDs they look better. I don't think this one is available here in the UK where I am. It says: "This product has been discontinued. It's unlikely that we will restock this model in the future". The only other ones I spotted with negative displays don't allow you to change the strap for a NATO strap. 😢
Wow thx alot my dude! i just about to buy the F91w for swimming and i had a few concerns about it. this one looks way better
I surf with f91w for 3 years and its actually almost 10 years old!
Hi Dave I love Casio's so I'm always happy to see a good review, the W-217H is a neat watch< I have quite a few A168, A700, etc. but I would suggest you take a look at the WV59, world time, RC, very retro styling the only thing it lacks is solar, keep up the good work ...stay safe
As you said, the F-91W "dissapears" on your wrist which is what I love about it. I find that every other watch I've worn reminds me that it's there which gets on my nerves. It may look a bit small but personally I'm 99% focused on function over aesthetics and the smaller size outweighs the better light of the 217h for me (the reason I clicked on this vid is because I thought it was the same size watch as the F-91W but with a better light). I rarely use the light anyway as it's usually light enough to see the display, be it from daylight or room lights. Great review!
naaah if you want a F-91W with better light, there are variations with EL backlight. Like the A-168WA-1YES or the W861VQES. :)
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 cheers mate, not a fan of the metal straps on the A-168 (I guess I could change them) but the W86 looks promising, only slightly larger too. Although I have seen people modding the F91w so might give that a shot.
@@jamdiversified9698 You're welcome. The A-168 can be i think changed with Nato straps. :)
Just bought 3 Casio watches, I'm stoked
I still keep my F91W. Just in case it will be discontinued, I have it on hand. Plus, it has a rich history in the watch industry.
I really like the Casio CA-53W because it's a full fledged simple calculator in addition to being a watch and it has a second time you can set. It's only downside is it doesn't have a backlight. And best of all It's only 20 bucks.
The W217H is my go to watch!
The reason I like the original F-91W is because it’s the best minimalist watch and very cheap in price. It’s so lightweight and low profile.
You can reverse the display in f91w, just peel off the polarised film and flip it, stick it back on..😊❤️ can do it with calculators etc it's easy.. bought f91w and postage was more than watch!!
do you need to apply any glue to the film? or just stick it on
