      The 16" MBP is a superb audio production machine - but you do have to concede that it'll get _very_ hot and noisy, fan-wise when you use it for that purpose. I'm on Big Sur, and have had no problems with Logic and third-party plugins so far, but that of course depends on what plugins you use and whether or not the developers have updated them for Big Sur. Always best to do a bit of research before upgrading to soon 👍

    I’ve had my MacBook Pro 16 inch 💻
    for 4 months now & love it! As a software developer (mainly Intel/PC) I’ve switched from my PC laptop to Mac without a hitch. Sure, the fan noice can be a bit bothersome- mainly because I worry about the harm it may be causing to the internals- otherwise I have no regrets on this purchase.

      Hi, Yong - thanks for getting involved. The fans rarely, if ever, make an appearance during light work such as that you describe. Occasionally, I'll hear them, but this is usually if I'm using an app which is making poor use of resources (Spark email is a common culprit).

    Excellent; thanks, Mark. Looks an awesome device. It's just a bit too much for me though so I've bought the M1 MB Pro. Interesting - and good - that you have heavy fan activity but no throttling issues. I would suspect that the 2021 16" MBP will have little fan activity with its M1X??? or M2[whatever]??? etc. SoC. We'll see :-)

      Thanks, Stephen! The 16” spec I have is arguably a bit heavy duty for what I need, too, to be honest! I bet you’ll love the M1 MacBook Pro - that machine is the start of something big. And I suspect you’re right - the 16” will _surely_ not suffer from similar fan issues 🤞🏻

  • @le-sprain
    @le-sprain 3 года назад +1

    Indeed the fans do not affect performance. The opposite is the case: they spin up in order to avoid overheating and therefore keep the performance up - and they do that well. The issue with this device is that it gets too hot too soon and that the Radeon 5500 uses too much wattage when connected to an external monitor, which again gets the temperature to rise. So with some better design choices, the need for the fans to run so high could have been avoided and we‘d get awesome performance and a peacefully quiet laptop at the same time. Alas, now noise-cancelling headphones have to do their job ;)

    • @MarkEllisReviews
      @MarkEllisReviews  3 года назад

      Thanks, Manuel! And yeah, that's exactly why we buy noise cancelling headphones, right? But you make a good point; the fans are there for a reason. I can just see why it'd annoy some people, and it's another clear indication that Intel's (and AMD's?!) days are numbered on this platform.

    I ordered my MBP 16 a month (before the M1 event) ago and it arrives in 4 days. I am yet to see what it's like on an external monitor but I am used to how hot they get having had the first-ever 15" MBP and then getting the 17" MBP. I couldn't wait for the M1 chip 16" as it's something I need now. That said, if worse comes to worst, I am hoping my new one should hold its value well enough to trade in against the 16" MBP as and when the time is right.

    I bought a brand new 2019 15' early this year for just $1,799 on Best Buy (since the 16' had just released). The 15' was a good deal at the time, even though I would have preferred the "newer" 16' due to the scissor keyboard. Fast forward almost a year later, I wish I didn't make the purchase at all (15 nor 16'). I love the big screen, but I could be satisfied with my 2018 MBA. I should have kept that $1,799 in the bank. Now with the M1 chip macs, I will find it harder to sell my year old 15' without taking a disgraceful loss.

    It's also not the best apple silicon laptop because they will progress and eventually release even better chips just the way they have progressed to iPhone 12 today. I don't know why is everyone acting like M1 is the last best performance laptop apple will create.

      That was probably done intentionally to phase peolle in and give them more of a reason to upgrade to the m2 (or m1X as some call it) if they already have the m1. The hardware is identical to the 2019 intel model which has a 4 port option so there's literwlly no reason other than money not to have included it here. I understand safari is native/ better optimized for apple but I used chrome on both my 2012 and 2017 MacBook Pro with no issue. and my gf used it on the 2014 MacBook pro, the 2019 intel model and the m1, again with no problem. so what is it about the 16' specifically that can't handle chrome?

      I've connected it to an external monitor and heat/ fan wise it's fine. probably because it's a small and really old model that still uses VGA. however, I do notice about every 5 seconds or so the cursor stutters. are you aware of this problem or any fixes? this one happened when connected to another display. maybe it's because I'm using 2 adapters? I have a usb c hub connected to the laptop and that is connected to an hdmi to vga cable, which is then plugged in directly to the monitor. again this never happened on older models, I tried replacing the usb c hub with a type c to hdmi adapter and while that helps (it now occurs every 10 or so seconds instead of 5) it doesn't solve the problem.

Maybe someone else could chime in on this. However, whenever I've experienced anything undesirable with Apple gear, I've always gone straight back to Apple and they've been faultless in helping - I'd always make it my first port of call before going too far down the rabbit hole yourself.

      Genuinely love how passionate some people get about laptops. I bought this one because I wanted a very powerful Mac which I could use on my lap on the sofa and in the myriad of other places in which I need to get relatively complex work done.
      Sorry you fell off your seat - my intention is to inform, not to harm. But the iPad comparison is purely based on weight alone, and there are people out there who have successfully gone iPad only for some pretty serious content work, so it definitely demands further exploration, in my book. And I agree - for many people, it'll replace their desktop computer, but that isn't it's raison d'etre - it _is_ a laptop, and it genuinely has a problem when it comes to those fans and heat generation.
      I'm actually getting a new M1 Air this week for this very reason, so stay tuned for my thoughts on that.
      Oh, and forgive me... there's no such thing as a 2016 17" MBP is there? Or did I miss that one?
