  • Update (12/2/2020) regarding Apple Silcon M1 Macs:
For the folks who are insisting that I regret my purchase, here are lists of audio software and hardware companies who have issued statements that their product currently do not support Big Sur and/or non-Intel Macs (yet). Which thereby includes M1 (Apple Silicon) Macs. The issues can range from “seems to work” but “not yet thoroughly tested” all the way to complete software/hardware incompatibility.
Some folks think Rosetta 2 is the end all be all answer, but it does not take into account driver compatibility for soundcards, MIDI devices, and other hardware commonly used with these audio software applications. This is a shot list of just some of the relevant ones (as of 12/2/2020) I found common for DJ and audio production. However, it is not a complete list of all audio related companies.
I left a link below to the larger list published and updated by Sweetwater (see pinned comment). But as of right now, many of these companies are in a status of “actively testing” Big Sur with their products and have warned users not to update.
Software companies that have issued “do not update to Big Sur” warnings:
    Pioneer DJ (Rekordbox)
    Serato (Serato DJ)
    Atomix (Virtual DJ)
    Engine DJ (Engine Prime)

    Update (2/9/2021)
With the current state of Big Sur and the M1 Macs, I sustain that I am glad to have purchased this Mac when I did. Anyone who buys this model today will be stuck on Big Sur. And as many know, driver compatibility issues are widespread among audio gear, especially DJ gear. I don't plan on upgrading machine for another year to allow all the app and hardware developers to catch up. Everything is happening as predicted.

Congratsulations on your new MacBook Pro. I was wondering if you could please show us how the Fans behave when using it to run Ableton Live or Logic Pro X with a substantial number (150- 180) of Audio Plug-ins like Waves,Auto Tune, Valhalla etc. with and without external monitors . I want to upgrade my 2012 i7 quad MBP but many reports of loud fan noise and heat especially when connected to external monitors are putting me off. I went to Apple store to try it out for myself but they do not have the 8 core model out on display for us to test.
Almost all videos the 16-Inch MacBook Pro on youtube are either a lousy track count test or one where the emphasis is on Sample Library Plug-ins like Kontakt or VST Synths Like Serum and diva .
I can't find anything that shows the power it has utilising third party Effects Plug-ins for Mixing alongside logics own Plug-ins and when i do , it's on the i7 model :/ .

When I transferred my data from my old macbook to the new one it killed off quite a few apps. It may even be a problem for old printers and scanners that have 32 bit drivers. I wish Apple would have waited for OS 11 to kill off 32 Bit. That would have been a nice clean line with the ARM Macs

Your voice is pleasant and would be spoiled by unnecesary distractions. You are definitely not an Apple fanboy, but a critical, articulate and seemingly unbiased computer enthusiast. @@priyonjoni Thank you for your reply. Yes, the heat issue. I have heard about this before and it continues to worry me somewhat. Given that I would be spending around A$9,000 on this machine, I would like this to be my only device. Also, I am relying on having a Windows application (e.g. Quicken for Windows) open at the same time as Excel for Mac, so Bootcamp is not an option for me. There is a Thinkpad P1, P15 and P17 coming out shortly, some with 600 nits screen options. If the speakers are tolerable, I might just have to stick with Microsoft rather than the Tim Apple MacBook. And the spill resistant Lenovo keypads are also such a reassuring luxury with me always having a cup of green tea on my desk. Thanks again.

Hi, I love your videos and the way you explain is so simple yet in details. I have got a question, I got my MBP 16” last week. Specs: i9 8 core 8GB 5500 Radeon Pro Graphics 1 TB STORAGE 16GB RAM. Whenever I run photoshop the screen goes black for 2 seconds then goes back to normal. Spoke to Apple and tried all the resets and installed a new copy iOS still didn’t solve the issue. I was advised to erase the Mac which I did and now I have a small circle with slash 🚫 every time I boot the device. It doesn’t go beyond this point. Had a really bad experience with this new mpb. This was my first purchase after 2011. So scared and confused whether I should get a replacement or get a refund.

    • @priyonjoni
      @priyonjoni  3 года назад +3

Dark AV3 the blacking out of the screen is the GPU switching from integrated graphics to the dedicated graphics card. My old machine used to do that with my Nvidia card. It shouldn’t do that, but on some OSX versions it does. It doesn’t hurt your machine if you can ignore it. It may go away later on an update.
Temporary solution: go to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter. Uncheck “Automatic graphics switching”. That will default your Radeon graphics card the whole time. However, you will notice a little more spool up of the fans and lose a little battery life. But it should stop the momentary black out.
Also, make sure to report the issue to Apple, including the temporary solution. I’ve had my 2013 MacBook Pro checked by Apple 3 times without them figuring out it was the dedicated GPU switching causing it.

I expect the ARM MBPs to be awesome, but not immediately, and I am skeptical that we will see an ARM chip capable of replacing the 16's CPU/GPU set within 2 years, and (like yourself) I don't expect to see widespread (reliable) software support for an additional period. Further, I don't expect the first generation ARM MBPs to be as reliable as subsequent versions as massive jumps often correlate with growing pains, quirks, and sometimes reliability/longevity issues. Now is a great time to buy the 16-inch. It has several flaws, but it's a great system overall.

And I have a mid-2015 MBP that still works pretty well so buying into a new Apple Silicon Mac wouldn’t be much of a risk other than maybe not being able to run some side projects. But since I’m going to start learning IOS development, making the early switch would actually give me an advantage as a mobile developer. I look forward to what the new macs are going to be like and what new hardware features they may have. Here’s to hoping for FaceID and LTE coming to the Mac.

Maybe. But keep in mind that most big tech companies (Facebook, Lyft, Uber, AirBnB etc) all use Flutter or React Native for their mobile apps, not Swift. So at that point it's less important to get an ARM computer.

TheJulianmc this only partially true. Many of these companies still have the need for native built components. My company for example uses React Native but there are quite a bit of Native modules built in Swift and Kotlin. So the decision to learn Swift isn’t necessarily to only build native apps, it’s more to have an edge as a multi platform developer in general.

Also, I do agree with him that if you are going to get the Macbook Pro 16 this is a great time. Apple, IMO, will continue to support .x86 chips from Intel for at least 2 years in terms of making new Intel-based Macs, and an additional 2 years from a purely support perspective. A lot of this depends on how fast Apple can develop the power and speeds to bring Arm and their T chips to a point where they can replace professional machines like the Macbook Pro, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro. We are more likely to see them come out with Arm-Apple-based silicon for Macbook Air, Mac Mini, and iMac before any of their more expensive hardware...and frankly that is the market that matters most for them because it is the higher-volume market.

Folks want you to get straight to your content without otherwise being distracted by commercial endorsements. 2. Don't make your commercial endorsements so long, please. P.S. You are wise to buy now, while Apple Computer is at the height of Intel Quality and Compatibility. Once Apple switches over to their new ARM Archetecture, end users will be nothing more than glorified Beta Testers for the new system. I agree with other posters on this thread there will be a not rapid adoption period after the roll out of the new archetecture, and no one (Including Apple) can predict how smoothly the new technology introduction will be (??) I use my MACs for mission critical business as an independent film maker, and I have neither the time, or the patience to screw around with possibly unstable, buggy hardware and software.*

Apple Silicon may work for the less powerful line and entry level, but phasing out the i7/i9 is going to be difficult.
