    18:13 the logo lighting isn't a waste of battery, it uses the cold cathode florescent back lights of the screen to light the apple logo. So there isn't any extra power being used to light it. Thats why OLED screens don't have that feature anymore.

    • @leeseth
      @leeseth Месяц назад +6

      thing is, none of the macbooks are oled. the lit up logo was removed because the display side of the clamshell design was getting too thin to put in that light up logo

    If I'm not mistaken, the apple logo lighting up doesn't waste power. It uses the light from the display. If you shine a bright light on the Apple with the screen off, you'll see the light come through. Normally displays have a layer that prevents this.

    The light-up logo was lit by the backlight of the LCD display, so they actually didn't use any extra battery. That's also why there could be a hotspot on the middle of the display: the sun could shine through it lighting up that spot. In my experience this only happened with direct sunlight shining on the logo.

    I never understood where people got the idea that the light up logo wastes battery. If anything it’s more efficient or neutral.
    It’s just the normal backlight for the screen, it’s not a separate light. That’s why it can create a hotspot in the screen in some lighting. Because you’re literally looking through the display.

    As a life time Windows and Linux user, buying a MacBook pro with M2 Max earlier this year was quite an experience. The performance is amazing and I've found that it's become my daily driver instead than firing up my noisy and heat generating i9 13900k gaming rig to use it for work and non-gaming related tasks. I'm quite impressed on where Apple has taken their laptops today.

      I've been using unreal engine on an M1 macbook air and just recently the performance you could expect has jumped from playable framerates at low settings to high or even epic graphics. This is more a testament to Epic finally optimizing for apples hardware but it also shows just how much performance you can squeeze out of a bottom of the line apple silicon chip if you actually bother to design for it. And people were already impressed by what it could do under rosetta.

It also takes me back, as thirty years ago and a teacher, I was second in charge in my school's science department and responsible for a lot of the equipment spending, especially technology. I was allowed to buy a laptop for my personal use and in a world of PCs, chose an Apple Powerbook 145B. It proved very useful, though back then, it scared me stiff commuting with it, carrying it on the tube and buses in its shoulder bag!
    My very first laptop I bought exclusively for my own use was in 1999. Yep, an iBook in the same blueberry colour as the one you got. I loved it but hated the 'handbag' appearance if you carried it by its built-in handle. My current laptop is a 2020 M1 MacBook Air.

Think up until like 2015 or so it actually still worked, granted wasn't in best of shape(slightly damaged hinges, plastic corner damage, etc) but still ran perfectly fine or at least as much as you'd expect from an old laptop.

    18:14 the logo lighting up used exactly 0 battery power because the screen already lit up all they had to do was make a slight cut out on the back of the LCD to let some light through and film light up Apple logo. And as long as you weren't in direct sunlight we wouldn't have an issue of bleedthrough.

    Failed to mention that Apple, with the PowerBook 100 (1991), redesigned the laptop concept which is the one we still use today: moved the keyboard to the back and the display hinge to the back edge and centered the "mouse" in front of the user. Laptops before the PB100 (including the Macintosh Portable) had the keyboard in front, trackball to the side and display hinge in the middle.

    MacOS 10 on the iBook is seriously impressive. The design looks shockingly modern for just how old it is. I've generally been a Windows/Android guy for most of my life (but I bounce back and forth and you should too because both are excellent.) But Apple has always had their finger on the pulse of design. When it comes to hardware and software/UI, Apple has been top notch in this regard. I have always appreciated Apples relentless focus on making things look beautiful and easy to use. It's that obsessive attention to detail that has made them the most successful, and by FAR the most influential tech company on the planet.

    small correction there. The logo that light's up doesn't use extra battery and is the same light from the screen. as explained below.
    It gets light from the backlight. The glowing Apple logo is not a light, but rather a window into the backlight of the display. The Apple Logo is illuminated from the rear of the display panel. The light from the display panel passes through Apple's logo, resulting in its illumination.
