It really made the ideas make sense in practical use. Being tethered to the TV made it a weird hybrid, while being able to dock the unit for a larger screen is far more useful. Nintendo has another cycle of this platform ahead with even better optimization if they don't screw it up. That gives them another 6+ years to come up with the next new great idea. They may not have it, but the IP alone is worth sticking around. Nintendo going the way of Sega would be heart breaking. Their games are only possible on their own innovative hardware. Glad to see they will be able to continue to deliver those games properly because of how well the Switch has done. Having kids has brought me back to Nintendo in a big way.

I love that he was so dedicated to the experience that he bought not only the consoles, but the time period TVs! It’s impressive how much length he goes to for these videos!
I would like to mention that you weren’t entirely holding the N64 controller right for Mario 64: it’s a lot more comfortable if you put your left hand on the middle prong. That gives you direct access to the Z trigger and the joystick without stretching your hand, and the D Pad isn’t used at all in Mario 64 anyway.
Incredible video. Really showcases how much a backbone Nintendo has been to the gaming industry. I would be really curious to see the evolution of handholds aswell.
The reason the Wii U failed was because they introduced it as "The new controller" instead of the new console, so people just thought it was a new controller for the Wii.
I have a massive soft spot for the WiiU. Playing games like Windwaker HD where you are sailing while having the map on your gamepad was just awesome. So many cool experiences with this console.
People associate Wii U low sales as the console having a bad library and it's not the case at all. Let's not forget the most popular Zelda game was made for that, not the Switch.
The Z-button on the N64 was in the middle because the intent was that you'd hold the controller by the middle grip when using the analog stick. The left grip was used when playing a game that only needed the directional pad.
Can confirm as someone who lived through it that seeing a n64 running mario for the first time was absolutely mental. It felt like you were playing a cartoon. That whole generation of gaming was mind-blowing because technology was making huge leaps constantly.
I remember almost falling off my chair the first time I saw the change to a wolf man in altered beast. And the first time I heard proper speech in a game blew me away.

We were a little poor when I was growing up, but I can still remember the day my mom picked me up from school and said she went to a garage sale and had a surprise in the backseat. Then we were sitting at a red light and my mom begrudgingly said to herself, "I can't believe I got a Nintendo", and I immediately started spazzing out with excitement... it was amazing! Lol
@@leeartlee915 it was probably around '93/'94 I believe I was in first or second grade... and yeah, it was the original NES! And only had the first Mario/duck hunt game, couldn't play duck hunt for awhile until we got the gun controller.
Stunned at how you’ve managed to find boxed consoles! As someone who owned these consoles from new as a kid, something about unboxing them just brings back so much nostalgia
Fun fact: when designing the GameCube, Nintendo made the A, B, X, and Y buttons in varied size based on how much you’d use them. The larger, the more used.
The way he holds the n64 controller is giving me chills. You are supposed to hold the middle stick for 3d games hence the analog stick and shoulder button and for 2d games the dpad stick.
haha. i came here to comment something similar. I just dont get it. Whenever someone who missed that generation gets hold of a N64 controller, they all do that, yet when it came out, I dont recall anyone ever doing that. We all seemed to get straight away you hold it in the middle for anaolgue stick.
I just legit downloaded Spotify just to scan his shirt and it went as i expected. Anyways your videos are so in-depth explained and they are the highest possible quality. Keep making good content like this!
I'm 38 and I lived through all these systems. I can say that the N64 looks like blocky garbage now but was so revolutionary at the time. Mario 64 really changed the way video games worked where you could go wherever you want and do things in any order. I didn't know Nintendo were the first to add an analogue stick but I believe it - Nintendo has always innovated.
@Super Nostalgia Listen friend, I've devoted my life to God but even I draw the line at someone blatantly advertising the religion like some sort of Onlyfans plug.
I Tried recently to get into but the graphics i pretty bad i just end up resorting to playing the PS1 as it feels alot more smoother also the controller which was cool felt pretty uncomfortable so many burns on my palm from playing mario party.
I truly regret not giving the Wii U the attention it deserved when it came out. Bought a used one a year ago to play the remastered Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. It was an amazing experience and is one of my favorite consoles.
The price was the real turn off for me when it was released. Additionally, the tablet was cool, but I had a much more portable 3DS on hand. I think this and the confusing marketing (calling it the Wii U instead of the Wii2 or Super Wii was an incredibly stupid move) doomed it out of the gate.
@@drzerogi I was working at Best Buy at the time and people kept thinking it was an accessory for the Wii. Needless to say it was a headache. I agree the price was pretty high. I will say though using that tablet as a map or items menu was such a cool feature that made the game more enjoyable. Sailing the seas in Wind Waker was so much easier the the Game Cube.
Growing up with all of these consoles, I can honestly say that none was as life-changing as the N64. This was the console that made me a video game addict, but not in a bad way. For a shy, introverted kid, these games were my escape to something great. Games like Ocarina of Time will always hold a special place with me because of it.
Seeing Mario 64 for the first time blew a lot of kids minds. We went from the SNES (which was awesome but felt like more of the same from the NES) to running around in a 3D space. When I say it was a highlight of my life seeing that game for the first time, I’m not even exaggerating.
I remember my dad telling me when the N64 came out he had begged for it for Christmas and that was his favorite Nintendo System of all time. I asked to get the Nintendo All Stars pack for my switch and he saw that Mario 64 was in there and he was like "dang, I miss my N64"
@Marko Polo I can’t speak for the OP but the NES was my first video game experience. Played my first video game at 4 years old. Was completely enthralled by them. But I kind of took it for granted. And when the SNES came out, I was like “yeah, this makes sense. The NES but better looking”. The jump to 3D, though, felt different to me. It actually made me consider bigger possibilities for video games than I had before. That’s me though.
Yesterday i also bought a nintendo switch, and can saved some money. I found a TG store, what sell gift card with discount of almost 40%. It's not ad but just a recommendation.
I also doubted it before, but then i decided to buy it and did not regret it. A few months ago i bought a gift card in this store. I ordered a coffee machine from amazon
"Such a headbanger" then cue the video sample was pure Comedy Gold. The amount of research, editing and general awesomeness that goes into each production is quite frankly insane. Please. Don't ever stop.
I literally burst out laughing at that part. I was chilling, still kind of bringing back emotional memories from the previous consoles and then that goddamn meme popped up, I frickin lost it 🤣🤣
The reason why the N64 had such a weird controller and a trigger on the middle handle was because they wanted you to be able to choose between using a D-pad, (By holding it normally), or using the Analog Stick, (By holding the middle and right handle). Hope this helps you understand the weird N64 controller design.
You know what's cool? You can actually play all of N64's best first person shooter games using the D-pad for strafing and movement while using your right hand in the middle for aiming and shooting, more similarly to how hand assignments are used in modern first person shooters like call of duty. Some early literature from nintendo even suggested using the d-pad for first person shooters. No one back then seemed to do it though, as they assumed the yellow c-buttons were the way, which was fine, but those buttons make it hard for anyone to go back to play goldeneye today. When I show them you can use the D-pad, kids pick it right up like any other dual controls on first person shooters (phone games, playstation, xbox etc.)
Yeah what he said you are supposed to hold in the middle handle with the joy stick it's how you control Mario in Super Mario 64 In other handle with the D-pad it's supposed to control other games that aren't using the joy stick so you where playing this controller like a modern Nintendo Pro controller, PS controller, and Xbox controller so pls don't play the controller like that.
This is true, but so many games controlled better via the analog stick than the D-pad that it really became a must to hold the middle and right-side handles by default. Nintendo did eventually realize this as the Gamecube controller was significantly better while still retaining a D-pad for when it would be the better option.
My mom used to work in a nursing home and when i was little waiting for her to get off id play with the elderly people on the wii for a while. Was really weird seeing people way older me enjoy video games but it also made me realize the power of gaming and the bonding with complete strangers it could bring.
Also one of the main reasons the PS2 was such a success compared to the GameCube was that it was marketed as a dvd player which were very new and expensive at the time.
Also it was weaker in raw power than the competition... but not thaaaaat weak, not like Wii vs PS3 and Xbox 360 level, but somewhat weaker than the Game cube and Xbox. This allowed the PS2 to be way cheaper (mainly in developing countries) while still sharing games with the competitors. The Xbox was the most powerfull, thus the most expensive, people would not choose it over the cheaper ones, the game cube and the PS2. The game cube was the one in the middle term in terms of power and price, but the mini DVDs made it harder to pirate gamnes... the PS2 was the cheaper one AND used regular DVDs, so pirating was very very easy... the console itself was cheaper and the games were almost for free in developing countries (piracy) making it the really only possible option for the average joe in huge developing countries like Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and etc.
@@miguelgcgamer9878 Then it was useless, bc in my country (and I suppose... other developing countries), back in the years of (around) 2002 to 2006, the game cube was still more expensive than the PS2 (the game cube was the console I most wanted at the time).
@@deliciouspie6789 no there's actual a difference most of time Playstation makes their money through third party rather Nintendo's true exclusive first party game
I see this with almost all people unfamiliar to the N64 controller. And it baffles and even lightly angers me me when the seem blind to the middle handle and write it off stating it makes no sense. That aside, I like the vid and the wonder and enthusiasm this guy has covering all this.
and the fact that the wii sensor bar doesnt detect the main motion of the wiimote but detects where your hand is when being pointed at for the pointer on screen
Just a slight clarification at 10:18, the GameCube normally defaults to and runs games at 480i. It IS capable of 480p output in most games, it just can’t do it with the composite AV cable that was included with it. You would’ve needed the optional component cable back then to run the console at 480p. Nowadays somewhat cheaper HDMI alternatives exist to get the same functionality.
Retro-bit also makes aftermarket component cables in addition to their HDMI adapter and it gets pretty close. Not much reason to blow $300 on the original cable anymore
I remember, when i was a kid, i was playing wii sports with my mom and dad, and my mom forgot to put the strap on and launched the wii remote into the tv. it was expensive, but we were all laughing! This video really does bring back awesome memories! 😄
I can't believe there are people of his age that have never held an N64 controller. It's insane to me that someone needs to tell him to hold the handle with the active controls. It's like grandma trying to find "the internet" on her computer
@@therealjamesmccrary Honestly, it's absolutely baffling to me that someone would hold it that way even if the only controller they've ever held was their TV remote. How many people on staff saw it before uploading and didn't think anything was weird? I don't mean to sound like I have a pitchfork or torch in hand. It's just one of the most bizarre sights my brain has ever tried to make sense of.
Great video! It really drives me crazy whenever I head someone roasting Nintendo for it's lack of "graphical power". I mean, Nintendo pratically invented all the features modern games use until today and was never afraid of being a failure. It's so amazing to see it's evolution and I'm so glad to live this moment where the Switch is it's most successfully piece of hardware ever. Long live NIntendo!
Not the most successful ever until it surpasses ps2's record but I'm with you on the congrats to Nintendo. I think it will surpass it or it will be very close
The problem of the WiiU wasn't that is didn't appeal to anyone as a new console. The reason it failed is because Nintendo never marketed it properly as a new console. Many people, even press, saw it as an updated Wii or the gamepad as a new accessory to the Wii. nobody knew what it really was. Nintendo completely botched the launch and marketing of what was a truly amazing console.
@@rockapartie it wasn't its main problem. Yes it made things difficult for the die hard fans but the general audience doesn't care about CPU or GPU but buys a console purely based on marketing. And botched marketing is wat doomed it for the general audience Nintendo created with the Wii.
It wasn’t truly amazing compared to Nintendo’s other consoles. I had one and loved it. Had A FEW solid games. But the software library was not that great. Probably because they couldn’t dedicate as much money to game dev. Plus 3rd parties hated development for it. While 3D World, MK8, and DK were awesome, it took a long time to get those. The launch games to get were Nintendo land, and the 4th NSMB game within just a few years span.
Not only that, but also the lack of third party support. They dropped support due to lack of sales, which meant fewer games, which meant fewer hardware sales. He's oversimplifying the entire wii U situation
This was seriously awesome. Also brought back a lot of memories. I was in 5th grade when the nes came out and I lived through all those upgrades personally. With the exception of the wiiU (we don't talk about wiiuuu, no , no..)
@@0n1c420 Still has more responsive controls than the Wii U. The input delay on the Switch is terrible, and i miss the DS style gameplay with 2 screens (when the execution is good). Some of the Switch's best selling games are Wii U games, Wii U also created Super Mario Maker which is not the same without 2 screens.
Fun fact: The Main Reason why the Wii isnt much of a step up from the Gamecube is because they didnt want to have to make a sightly remade version system for gamecube games so they just made it so they didnt have to
In 40 years of gaming, Mario jumping into that painting in Mario 64 was probably the single most mind blowing experience I've had in gaming, ever. I love the concept of the Switch which is finally really catching on with handheld you can use on TV but around 2010 I did this with OnLive, a logitech controller and an Asus TF101 tablet on a 55" LED TV, no problem. Posted on RUclips. Shortly after there was an Android update and it never worked again. Hmmmm.
My kids loves the SNES but I fell in love with my N64. Hours of Zelda had my wife actually singing all the tunes and Mario 64 had both of us actually playing together to collect the stars. ✨ unfortunately my wife isn’t able now to play anymore but a big thank you for the memories and joy it gave us
I am old enough to have owned all of these consoles. (I had an NES at 4 years old) so this is an excellent video of nostalgia. Nintendo learning their market in the Playstation/Xbox era has to be one of the most successful pivots a company has ever done.
The Wii U was Nintendo's greatest moment. It's a shame not many people bothered to find out. Nintendo really screwed up their marketing and branding so people didn't bother as most people owned a Wii. The Mii-verse will forever be one of gaming's greatest forums. Having games link to the Mii-verse was an amazing addition. The games on the Wii U are most of the big games released on the Switch with the "Deluxe" tag added. Never forget that Breath of the Wild was made for the Wii U and held off for the Switch. Now with the ease of hacking the Wii U it has become the most useful console Nintendo ever made. It plays every game made from the start of Nintendo right up to the Wii U, plus some emulated ports from other consoles.
Thank you Nintendo for saving video games before i was even born. I would've been an entirely different person without you. Edit: Looking at all these old consoles in mint condition feels so... satisfying in a way.
Cool but not even close also there home consoles and you dint get the other one like the American snes is way diffent then the famacon and the Japanese nes is different 😂
12:20 The reason they sold the Wii with a protective case for the controller wasn’t out of pure kindness! They just knew half of the casual players would end up mistakenly throwing their controller right at their TV screen or living room windows!!
Nintendo is the GOAT of Gaming.....Ive had every single console Ps2, 3,4 xbox360, one and series x, and every nintendo that's every come out. I currently own an oled switch and a series x and I can honestly say that I find myself more excited to play the switch than my box. Nintendo just has that magic
7:30 you're holding the controller wrong. You're supposed to move your left hand to the middle part when using the stick, making it easy to hit the shoulder button.
The Wii still appealed to me as a non-casual gamer because of the fun mechanics of Mario Galaxy and the huge amount of strategy, tricks, etc. that was in Mario Kart Wii.
As someone who loves retro gaming I always love to see you make these videos about the history it’s just amazing to see the trial and error what leads to the amazing stuff today.
Lol the flex is impressive, unboxing each of these consoles nowadays is hard to do, let alone all in one room. I have each of them from their release dates minus the original NES. Also the d-pad was rarely used on the N64, it usually controlled camera functions. The Z-button and joystick were meant to be used more often with your left hand by grabbing the middle part of the controller. A little bizarre but something that became seamless after awhile. Fun tip: On the gamecube, next time you're booting up the console, hold down the indigo z button and the console will make a different start up sound.
Fun fact: The "sensor bar" for the Wii is actually just two infrared LEDs separated at a certain distance. The term is kind of a misnomer. You can actually use two lit candles for the same effect. The Wiimote has a small IR camera in it that sees the infrared LEDs (or candles) and figures out where you are pointing. The motion controls don't require the "sensor bar". They are accomplished by accelerometers onboard the Wiimote (like in your phone) 🙂
Oh god. That brings back memories. NES & SNES? Nintendo came out with so many ideas at that time it was nuts. My parents hated me being on either of the consoles.
On most N64 games(Like Super Mario 64) you're supposed to hold the middle grip of the controller. It makes it easier to use the analog stick and you have access to the Z button which many games used.
@xg223 Cause the N64 controller isn’t exactly well-designed. It’s uncomfortable to use, and it doesn’t get one of the most important things about a controller: All the controls should be easily accessible at all times.
Me waking up at 6 AM and seeing that this was posted practically and made my day. All I can say thanks, Arun. You always find ways to make your fans very happy.

Very nice video bro. You talk is clear and well documented. You did well in summarizing the story behind every Nintendo home system ever released. Also, the visual is top of the class with all these plastics shining like they were totally new. So much memories since I unboxed them personnally for the last 35 years....
Though he forgot to get into some of the other reasons why the PS1 and 2 outsold the N64 and Gamecube respectively. The PS1 used CD-ROM which not only held more data but is swappable meaning multi disc games are possible unlike Nintendo's cartridge based system, which while it loaded faster had exponentially less storage and was not swappable. Consider how some of the most popular games of the time were multi disc blockbuster games like those made by Square, Capcom, and Konami, and it becomes easy to see why the PS1 won that race. And that's not even mentioning its price point. Meanwhile the PS2 could play DVD at a cheaper price than actual DVD players while the Gamecube had proprietary discs. The PS2 also released at a time when gamers were growing up and it had more "edgy" games to appeal to that market meanwhile Nintendo were still all kid friendly. Oh how times have changed, now it's Sony censoring the hell out of eroge while Nintendo let's it run free on the eShop.

Hi Rachel do you remember the SNES that's the best on I reckon
I mean technically the vectrex was the first system to use an analog stick, but it didn’t garner nearly enough attention as the N64.

I truly regret not giving the Wii U the attention it deserved when it came out. Bought a used one a year ago to play the remastered Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. It was an amazing experience and is one of my favorite consoles.
I love the Wii U :)
Same. It hasn’t aged well in fairness but man, at the time the N64 was life
@Marko Polo I can’t speak for the OP but the NES was my first video game experience. Played my first video game at 4 years old. Was completely enthralled by them. But I kind of took it for granted.
Oh
Lol
This is true, but so many games controlled better via the analog stick than the D-pad that it really became a must to hold the middle and right-side handles by default.
Nintendo did eventually realize this as the Gamecube controller was significantly better while still retaining a D-pad for when it would be the better option.
My mom used to work in a nursing home and when i was little waiting for her to get off id play with the elderly people on the wii for a while.

The NES almost 40 years old
That doesn't mean that he bought/received his NES console around launch time. 😅

The bite of 83’ ❌
The great video game crash of 83’✅
I learned today that the Wii U was a new console and not "just" a slightly more powerful version of the Wii. And I always tried to follow Nintendo (grew up with it, but didn't really find the time to keep gaming these last couple of years). I'm not sure if this is on me, on Nintendo or a result of nobody really caring about this console, but wow.
Same here, just thought they added the handheld.
U missed out
Tbh i dont blame you, it had pretty abysmal marketing
i had a Wii U but it stopped working i don't know why and i wanna play it again😔
I still remember turning on the N64 with Super Mario 64 for the first time as a kid, one of the best experiences of my life.
1983: Yeah video games are gonna die out very soon.
2023: *Chronically online*
