You forgot to mention the Ps2 console was the first one that could play DVD movies and TV shows. It's what made it feel more like a home entertainment centre than just a game console.
I can't believe you didn't mention the DVD player in the PlayStation 2. It is undeniably the reason why it's sold so well. DVD players were really expensive at the time so you could get a game console and a DVD player for cheaper in some cases than just a DVD player. It was literally a game changer.
I made the same comment! Saying that the software library and bulkier design were the reasons for the insane sales is not really correct. The GameCube had one of the best software libraries of any system as well. The PS2's included DVD player was super significant.
This concept of moving through the history of a product and seeing its evolution is so fun! U should definitely do more of them on the Nintendo, Xbox etc.
I still have my Sega consoles from Genesis to the Dreamcast. The fact that Sega had a stable online network (PSonline and the 2k sports) before the Sony and MS makes it a true Underrated system
Sony entering the market with their own system was actually due to a backstab from Nintendo. Sony intended to enter the market with the Nintendo Playstation, where Sony proveded the CD drive part of the system and create exclusive games for it. DEV kits were already available and some prototypes still exist. The project was basically finished when Nintendo pulled the plug, thinking cds were inferior to cartridges, and developed their side of the system into the Nintendo 64. Sony had put so much funds into already that they decided to also complete the system and compete with Nintendo with their disc based 3d game console. It is hard to say who won. Both created an entire own side of the gaming market that grew alongside eachother and coexist without either side losing sales when the other does well, or gains from it the other falters. There WAS a big loser though: Sega was completely pushed out of the market is just a decade, now reduced to a 2nd party dev studio for mainly Nintendo.
Nintendo fan here, I have no problem saying Sony won the 5th console gen. Nintendo was about 2 years late to the party and struggled to even fully support their system. It is “best selling game system ever at the time vs the system that sold less than its predecessor” . Clearly the first one won.
@@dstinnettmusic absolutely. In my opinion ,even if the new Xbox is more powerful, you just want that thing that the playstation gives you . These small things that make you wanna buy it
I heard as well that apparently an important part of what seemed to aid Sony with PS2 sales was the fact that it cost a very similar amount (or sometimes even less) than a DVD player whilst being able to play DVDs, so people were buying the console instead of the standalone DVD player.
Something you didn't mention about the PS3, the reason it launched with such a high price tag was they had physically integrated a PS2 inside of the system so it had the ability to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games natively with hardware (not through software emulation) This allowed for full backwards compatibility for all of their titles but drastically increased the manufacturing costs As they released different Iterations of the Fat PS3 they slowly removed these features until it was strictly subpar software emulation People like to say they want backwards compatibility but if they really did they would have to pay for it, and history shows people don't want to pay for it...
The original Xbox 360 was extremely stripped back compared to the PS3, It didn't include things like wireless networking, you had to buy an attachment for it etc when you added up those costs it worked out a worse deal than the PS3 from a purely financial stand point.
Just a note on the PS1. It was also a middle finger to Nintendo whom had backed out of a deal with Sony for a disc add-on for the SNES. To add salt to injury Nintendo then backed one of Sony's rivals. So they basically took the tech they already developed and released the PS1.
4:01 fun fact: those cuboids on the startup screen are literally the save data of your ps2, so every time you play a new game, it’s different every time you start it up (but since this is a new one, there’s no cuboids)
This was such a great trip down history. I remember bugging my mum so hard to get me the PS1 and PS2. Those two defined my childhood. Games like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, God of War, Xena Warrior princess, Prince of Persia, WWE Raw Vs Smackdown, PES and FIFA! I could go on for ages. Looking back at this now, I realise how privileged my childhood was.
bro, same... i remember my uncle buying a ps1 and ps2 and we played with him the whole evening in coop games later on he got himself and me a ps3 a year or so later when it came out. we had such a blast playing in multiplayer and coop when we were together. such games as little big planet, killzone 1-3, gta 5, god of war, far cry 2 and whole bunch of others will allways stay in my heart, same goes for the online friends that were with me at the time. what a childhood that was...
You can turn the PS3 on with the controller as well. 12:08 What’s great about the PS3 console in this video is that it is backwards compatible with PS2 disc. All ps3 models can play PS1 disc.
As a 51 yr old, I had the pleasure and privilege of owning all the systems from Atari to Sega, to PS1-4 and Xboxes through to this day and to experience the evolution of the technology from its beginning. I feel blessed and wowed with every new system.
You can turn on the ps3 with the controller. The ps3 has so many features that the ps4 feels like a small upgrade Edit: Also ps3 can output 1080p Same as ps4, sony had to launch the ps4 pro for 4k gaming, so ps3 and ps4 are same in terms of resolution
Not only does this video show how far Sony/PS has come, it also shows how far his channel has come. From when he used to review handheld game to now casually getting every single PlayStation. It's crazy to think about.
damn i remember ps1 driver and crash team racing, my neighbor had ps1, we played for years in late 90s. i never had consoles tho, so it was like dream to go to him to play stuff
For me memories of Resident Evil 1 & 2 spring to mind. Still remember queueing up at midnight at a game shop for the launch of RES Evil 2, the opening cut scenes had my jaw on the floor.
The PS2 wasn't discontinued until 2013! A full 7 years after the PS3 had been released, and the same year the PS4 came out. It truly was an incredible system.
The weird thing is Sony said that when the PS3 was released in 2006 it was designed to be the first console with a ten year lifespan and yet the PS4 came out only 7 years later!
@@B-A-L Technology developed too fast between 1990 and 2020, even in 7 years PS3 was absolutely outdated. PS5 can go ten years because imo tech doesn't develop dramatically anymore.
I need help..i played a game 1994 Console in 2007.I forgot the game name 😪 A hen run and collect her kids hen and put it to a house. Can anyone tell me the game name?
Would have been interesting to add in the 2 handhelds (PSP and PSVita). This was a great overview of what made the PlayStation. Love it! Can't wait to see the same for Xbox, Sega and Nintendo!
@@EdisonTheFox I've had to repair my PS Vita like three times because it wouldn't start off I had to actually open it up and disconnect the battery, it was a piece of garbage.
5:12 They actually released a controller with 2 analog sticks in the PS1 era. However, it was late enough in the console's lifespan that many games didn't support it. But the PS2 is what made the sticks standard.
There are more inaccuracies like PS3 doing 720p max. It was 1080p although almost no games would utilize that because the PS3 wasnt strong enough. The home screen did just go 1080p, like some 2d games or simpler games. The cringiest one is where he says the PS4 made fully open worlds possible. I wonder what Skyrim (PS3) is than. Comparing two different TV's and blaming lack of color on HDR is criminally incorrect. I don't know why this man has the need for these weird and tecnically unjust comparisons. It's just wrong. First lesson if you compare two things = compare as equal as possible. smh. PS4 had HDR too. 4k on PS4 is a more complicated story but missed entirely (PS4Pro).
@@tjeerdtigchelaar1371 yeah literally ps4 pro is like another console. is 4k native and made a lot of differences sony wanted in the first place but the xbox was released too soon.
You forgot to say why Sony released the PS1 in the first place. They were going to partner up with Nintendo till they betrayed Sony , and the rest is history. Looks like Sony got their revenge. Also Sony has never lost to Xbox. The PS3 did beat the Xbox and it was released a year later
PS3 was the best console jump to date. Built like a tank with wireless controller, massive performance increase, HD resolution, could play blu rays films, had an SD card slot, could store all your photos and videos on it. It was a one stop shop entertainment hub. Every console since has been more of an incremental increase.
@@amossutandi i wouldn’t say it was too expensive, but the reality was that most people still didn’t have an HDTV when the console launched, so not only did you need to spend the $600 on the console but another $2-5k on an HDTV, they were extremely expensive at the time.
Apart from blu ray, the xbox 360 had a wireless controller, 1080p instead of 720p, a hard drive bay, xbox live, and a shop for all online games. It also had an expansion slot on the controller.
Just wanted to say upon myself that I really greatly appreciate you having to showcase the different types of PlayStations that I have used upon during my childhood and it feels good to see the old stations I have loved and adored so much
It still feels nostalgic to have never owned a single Play Station nor played on one but kept watching the PS releases and Games trailor/ Gameplays to feel nostalgic about it. We didn't had that kind of money so I never asked my father for it . Seeing a PlayStation still triggers that strong childhood feeling of wanting to own one. I literally knew every feature without touching one. All I had was internet. I am a 90s kid, so I have seen it all, every release.
Same here mate, same here, I remember disconnecting my mouse and keyboard while watching a walkthrough of the game and mimicing the gameplay on my disconnected mouse and kb so as to get the full immersive experience….
Some additional points: _PS2_ - Was also a functional DVD player. DVD players were still sort of new at that point, having come out a few years prior. So the fact that the PS2 could also play DVDs was a useful feature. It worked fine with a controller, but you could buy an optional remote accessory. _PS3 & PS4_ (since there is a lot of crossover points) - Mentioned the Blu-ray compatibility, but there actually was a lot of demand for the PS3 in the early days as a relatively cost-effective Blu-ray player (again, remote as an optional accessory) that could also double as a gaming console. It was a better deal than some of the cheaper early BD players that lacked some key features (I think internet features was a big one, internal storage was another, as that was used for some BD Live functionality). You touched on it with the PS4 bit, but it really was a bit of a nightmare to develop for, as I understand it. Because of this, a lot of games released on it performed worse than their X-Box 360 counterparts, in spite of the console being technically more capable. Skyrim was a notable example. That was pretty infamous for turning into a slideshow after some hours of play on a given character. Also, being a bit pedantic, but the PS3 technically supported up to 1080p gaming. It's just most of the games weren't capable of it, or defaulted to lower resolutions for performance reasons, and I'm pretty sure a fair few games on the PS4 were also sub-1080p render resolution. You can turn on the PS3 with the controller. The console had to be in the standby mode, which was standard so long as the switch was set to on at the back of the console. One final point though: _"I bought every Playstation Ever."_ *PSP and PSV cry in the corner* Those were pretty impressive little machines that blasted their competition (DS/3DS) out of their water both graphically and in terms of sound and just plain looked more premium. How good the games were was of course up to the developers, and the DS/3DS both had dual screens as features, and the 3DS had the 3D functionality (that a lot of people didn't use anyway). Pretty sure the original PSP is still well appreciated for its use as a portable emulation console to this day, even if Sony did do their best to make it much harder than they needed to for people to use it that way. And that's discounting spinoffs, like the PS Go, and PSX (Which was a DVR & PS2 combo device) but let's not get carried away.
The PS3 was really underused by many developers because they found it troublesome to program for all the specified cell cores etc. Those who bothered made thinks that looked like The last of Us or the Killzone games. Those games look amazing even now.
@@SeeDaRipper... Totally forgot that existed TBH. To be fare, the Net Yaroze isn't really a consumer device. I mean, it is technically, but more intended for hobbyists to develop small projects to work on the PS1.
@@ThatSoddingGamer Lol, well i had one...😉 Remember the free demos that came with the official PlayStation magazine? Unfortunately the community never really took off, but it was the start of console homebrew/Indies that's for sure.
The PS3 actually ended up out selling the 360 by the end of its life cycle after Sony dropped the prices with the slim models. Also forgot to mention the amazing first party games that helped sell the system. The PS3 sold 87.5m and the 360 sold 84m
@@Miggc1 has to be ps2 for me. Ps3 i never liked it. Played it for prob less than 2hrs in my life back then as i was barely exposed to it. Only ps2 and eventually we bought one in 2011. A bit late but enjoyed it. Xbox 360>ps3 in my opinion
Listen up, digital doofus, put down that PlayStation and pick up a board game like Monopoly. PlayStation is nothing but flashy pixels and predictable gameplay. Monopoly? Now that's a real entertainment experience. Roll the dice, make strategic moves, and watch as your fortunes rise or crumble. Forget about those mindless shooting games and endless racing simulations. Monopoly offers a world of interaction, competition, and fun. So ditch the PlayStation and unleash your inner tycoon with a game of Monopoly.
Arun, thank you for this trip down the memory lane! So many hours were spent on great games throughout the PS generations. So many forgotten memories were unlocked while watching this video. It was a really soulful, warm and nostalgic video for me. Makes me wanna get every PS and a CRT for myself just to relive those childhood moments. P. S. Definitely want to see a round two. Would also be interested in seeing the Xbox side of things, as I've never had one in my life, but am curious about the history of greatest PlayStation rival. Cheers! ❤️
@@zadsazhad yeah... It kinda sucks for console user that they lost the exclusivity part of it. The only thing you have to do is wait a few years for the game tho
I used to play PS1 & PS2 with my brother, my cousins and my school friends. The games and technology may not as sophisticated as PS4 and PS5, but the fun is off the charts. Ah the good old days
I think from ps2 to ps3 the gap was not very big i mean you can take ps3 gta v and compare it with ps4 gta v its a huge gap and take ps4 one to compare it with ps5 gta v its not much of a difference. Plus ps4 had great games of library and revolutionary controller whereas ps2 and ps3 controllers are kind of same. Ps4's end of games such as last of us 2, re 2, rdr 2 are still looks same on ps5.such of gap.
I’ll admit, I was intimidated by the 17 minute runtime as my attention span is desolate, but already three minutes in and just sunk in completely for the haul, great topic and really loving your format improvements. I caught the video where you talked about these video enjoyment optimizations, and I for one appreciate it. Great video so far (:
I'm not even a big Sony fan and I sat through the whole thing. I'm surprised Mr. Whose didn't mention the DVD playback that helped the PS2 succeed... and the Blu-Ray playback that held the PS3 back. In the early days of the PS2, it was a DVD player first and foremost, because the launch titles were so lackluster and because people were finally sick of the VHS format.
This is what happens when you look at TikToks all day. You become used to the dopamine rush of very short tailored videos that constantly stimulate your mind every day. Horrible
Dude, 🤣you still play games on your ps5, 🤔,, I still play my ps2 and ps3 and I'm too broke to even afford a second hand ps4,, it costs me at least 15 quid electric a week before I've even bought food etc,, ,,, I'm 35 in October,, I've never played the ps5 and only played my m8s ps4 once as he sold it,, you make me feel ancient, 😁😁✌️✌️
Dual Shock was actually presented with PS1 (analogues + rumble), PS2 used Dual Shock 2 which introduced pressure sensitive buttons (meaning the buttons reacted different in some games depending on how hard you pressed)
Man, the production and topic of this video feels like it's meant for me. First time I've actually wished for the video to not end :p. Props to Arun and his team for this!
So I'm almost 40 and I have memories of video games going back to the Atari 2600. And I can honestly tell you that I had never experienced the feeling of like true next-gen gaming until I played the PlayStation 3. I've always been a big PlayStation guy although I've also owned Xboxes and it wasn't until I remember getting the PS3 and plugging it in and playing metal gear solid guns of the Patriots that I remember having this truly awe-inspiring next generation type experience that blew away everything I thought video gaming could be. People complain about the PS5 and all of its faults and different things but every time I turn mine on I still get that next gen feeling
I feel so grateful to have owned all 5 Playstations, even if most of them I didn't get until well after launch. So many memories, and I'm still making more today!
I need help..i played a game 1994 Console in 2007.I forgot the game name 😪 A hen run and collect her kids hen and put it to a house. Can anyone tell me the game name?
Something that was left out of the video was the disc medium for each of the first three generations. From CD to DVD and to Blu-ray. Many where bought just to play DVDs and Blu-rays.
Yes for around $900 AUD the PS3 was a cheaper bluray player than other bluray standalone players, many a parent was convinced that the PS3 had blurays, for the kids the fact it played games was a bonus.
Love this, I have been a gamer all my life, I am 42 now and the advancement we have made is mad, cant imagine what the next 40 years will bring, looking forward to it
5:15 PS2 controllers have pressure sensitive buttons where the deeper the buttons are pressed, it increases the area of contact for varying degrees of conductivity to control acceleration in Gran Turismo & other supported games. 12:07 You can turn on PS3 console wirelessly using its Bluetooth paired controller, so it is previous gen feature & not "first time" in PS4.
There are tons of incorrect stats about these consoles in this video. I get this guy has money, but if you’re going to sink 20k to unbox vintage hardware, at least check that your script is accurate.
The PS2 wasn't 'technically' the first time you could play your games online, many consoles could go online well before the PS2, although the Dreamcast was probably the first one that had online out-of-the-box, without additional hardware purchase.
Pretty sure the Apple Pippin was the first one. But it was probably the biggest flop in videogaming history. And i feel like the CDI did, but it might have been an add-on. But yeah you are spot on. You could technically take your Atari 2600 online back in the day.
@@ringringbananarchy when it comes to online gaming that would go to the Sega Saturn with the Sega Net Link you could play games like Duke Nukem 3D online with mates
@@danimayb to be honest there a bunch of mistakes in the video that drove me up the wall Surprising too cos this isn't hard information to find and some of it is common gaming knowledge
I think he meant the first time online was available on a playstation console. Not literally the first time online gaming was a thing. He also mentions the first time you can turn on your console with the controller also referring only to playstation. As the whole vid is about playstation it’s pretty obvious he is speaking in that context.
@@dpanin1419 fair enough on the 1st point (he could have just said 1st for PlayStation that would have been better) But that controller thing is false You could have done that on PS3 the PS4 wasn't the 1st when it comes to turning on a console via controller
This video brought back fond memories. Two things I've disliked over the years though(and it's my only complaint)is how the price at this point has far outpaced inflation(making it more appealing to serious gamers and folks with disposable income) and the lack of backward compatibility after the original PS3
1:21 the greatest sound ever. Makes you feel in awe when you bought a new game and were running it. On a second note I'm hoping Sony come out with another handheld.
I love how happy he is by the fact that he can see the clouds on the car. As a software engineer i find it extremely funny when people point out simple things like that.
I got the PlayStation 2 at launch and it was marvelous. My favorite gaming console hands down by far. The amount of quality games it offered is incredible. PLUS the ability to watch DVDs was groundbreaking for it’s time and price in one bundle. The PlayStation 2 is KING. It holds the crown. Extremely nostalgic. 2000-2006 was one hell of a run for Sony!!
Hey Arun ! I watched 2 minutes of this video and I paused to say this. Such an awesome throwback, I owned every playstation ever and this brings back such good memories. Pure joy! Thank you ! 😊
lol 0:44 into the video and nope...the PS1 isnt sealed. It's in a plastic box protector, but that's not what "sealed" means. If you you don't have to "break any seals" (like shrink wrap or taped seals) it's not sealed. And some things never were sealed.
Back in 1995 i remember earning only $136 per week doing a full time traineeship paying $50 per week in board and saving many months for the PS1 which cost $589 AU at that time. It was an incredible experience, demo discs were so awesome when you couldn't afford a full game regularly. Eventually my pay increased and so did my collection. Toshinden, Wipeout, Tomb Raider, V rally, Crash Bandicoote, Street Fighter Alpha, ESPN extreme games, Ridge Racer Revolution and so much more. The PS1 was definitely the most notable psychological leap in gaming to this day. No other console had made me feel like what the PS1 did coming from the 16 bit era. Although i also really like the PS4 design. Personally i feel the original PS3 was the best looking design to date. I really dont like the PS5 design at all and really hope the Pro model is completely different.
Gaming was always expensive, nowadays when you look at custom gaming PCs the cheapest is 5K euros and even that barely can utilize things properly, you often have to swap things let me not rant further so next to that cancer a 250 euros PS4 pro or 5 is a no-brainer investment. As for retro stations PS2 is the most modded and most popular system still out in the world. That speaks major volumes where modern game stands at, basically nowhere so PS2 is still the most popular alternative. I mean, I used it as a gaming station, multimedia station, even going online as on a PC running Linux and bunch of other things and still play games on it and watch DVDs and home movie made discs, stick a multitap on it, play 4 players, paralel port it with other consoles, multiplayer all the way with it even today, for that price it did more then it was priced for. It's basically like a part of your family that will accompany me till I am gone. Can we say something like that for anything new?! Nope, it breaks soon as we play it for a month and the games are paywalled trash ...
@@schemar17 Depends of the region really. Some places have a heavy starving issue among other things. Overall in the world too it all comes down to cost of living. Who makes even a decent amount of money wont waste it on collecting things or gaming etc. Just the essentials. While throughout the years I often see people from the west buy a new thing, they show how they pre-ordered it or when it arrives, then they complain how they barely have for the bills and starve, and how they would like to buy more junk... like where is your common sense at even...

Most gaming homes have a PC, tablet or a PS variant. But majority in the world don't even play games anymore. PS1 and PS2 revolutionized the gaming world and after that the corporate greed killed gaming again.
This video is a fantastic blast from the past! As a gamer who grew up with these iconic consoles, it's so cool to see them in action again. I'm amazed by the evolution of gaming technology over the years. And that fun fact about the PS3 controller turning on the system is mind-blowing! Thanks for taking us on this nostalgic journey, and I'd love to see more videos like this in the future. 🎮😊
Yep PS3 turned on by pressing the PS button on the controller. Another fun fact - if you plugged your ps3 to a Sony TV, you can use the TV Remote to control pretty much everything on the home menu on the PS3. Ah PS3 🥲 loved that console SO MUCH
I first found the ps1 in my grandmothers attic yellowed and covered with all the garbage you can imagine. Up until that point I was never interested in what the games of the past were. But at that moment when I blowed the dust off this almost unrecognisable technology my eyes lit up like never before. At that moment I knew that retro gaming is all I could ever want. I grabbed the console ignoring the countless spiders resting upon it and immediately went into my grandfathers workshop to start disassembling it. 12 hours later with an empty bottle of cleaning alcohol, a bucket of now dirty water and scattered equipment I had a fully functioning ps1 with two working controllers. Since then I’ve collected countless games for countless consoles in my retro collection but I will never forget the day when I got that unthinkable amount of adrenaline from a simple grey box

Great video, though I believe part of the PS1 story was overlooked entirely. The making of the PlayStation was a joint project between Sony and Nintendo, the intention being to create an SNES CD-ROM player. For one reason or another though, Nintendo backed out of the project, leaving Sony with most of a console already finished, and the rights to it as well. They completed the project and ended up becoming bigger than Nintendo, with the PS2 being the best selling game console of all time.
Didn't Sony find out Nintendo was also trying to do a project with someone else which lead to the collapse of the contract? I might be remembering wrong.
@@wilsonmpesha904 Nintendo announced that Philips will be producing a CD version of the SNES, just a day after Sony went public and announced that they had a deal with Nintendo. It was in 1992, and the people at Sony considered not investing in the gaming console business at all, but the guy who developed the sound chip was persistent and eventually became the father of the Playstation. PS1 was the most powerful gaming console for just a short period of time, because Nintendo launched N64 in 1996. PS1 was launched in 1994, but only in Japan, it came to Europe and North America in the late 1995. Sega Saturn was just as powerful (32 bits) as PS1, and it arrived in EU/NA few months before PS. Regarding Sega, Sony didn't wiped out Sega. Sega wiped out Sega. Saturn was more expensive than PS1, as well as than the more powerful N64.
@@markomarkovic5729 Sony created the sound chip for nintendo at the time. This was what made nintendo initially partner with sony to create the Play Station (it was always going to be called that but sony had to combine the two to playstation). And yes sega killed sega however it was way more than just the price of the saturn that did it. Sega of america and sega of japan were basically at odds with one another.Sega of japan wanted a brand new console. Sega of america was doing their own thing with the 32x. Then there was the infamous shadow drop of the saturn (i think it was this one) which pissed off every dev. At this point sega was practically dead. The dream cast was like a zombi console or it could have been like a person on pcp who gets killed but doesn't realize their dead due to the effects that pcp has. The dreamcast could only slow down the inevitable at this point. And the ps2 just put the final nail in the coffin but it was actually sega themselves who bought the coffin and put most of the nails in as well as dug the dirt and lowered themselves in.
I just got my PS5 about a month ago and man, I've been blown away by the graphics on that thing. I do remember the really early days when the first playstation just came out, feels like a long time ago
One thing you missed about the Dualshock controllers were A) The PS1 got Dualshock in 1998 and B) Dualshock 2 implemented pressure sensitive buttons, so if you were playing GT3, you could control the throttle far more granularly or in MGS2, you could prime a shot from your tranquiliser gun before firing. Sony truly did lead the way with the games consoles and functionality. In fact, the PS2 was so successful, it was kept manufactured until 2014. It was THAT successful. Another thing about the PS2 is that in certain regions, you could output at 1080i. Gran Turismo 4 was one of the game that could support that.
Was about to say the same regarding Dualshock..also kind of a let down he didn't highlight the DualSense as it's the difference maker in the current gen consoles..
Also no mention of the PS4 Pro. I know he said he wouldn't bother with every variation but the pro was the only variation of the console that actually had more advanced hardware for better graphics and higher resolution. Although games that truly used it fully were never made due to the need for PS4 compatibility.
Gamecube had pressure sensitive controllers actually, but the PS2 arrived on the scene first and the Dualshock added an extra stick, but gave Sony the ability to imbed rumble functionality as a response to Nintendo's bulky rumble pak, which was more important I feel, I don't recall that second analog being used much at all(Ape Escape comes to mind and not much else). I don't think SOny leads much in terms of console innovation in terms of play control tbh(they do seem to come up with their own solutions based on what others do, and do it better), I'd give that to Nintendo, but they do lead in terms of console functionality imo.
I was there for the first model PS1. I remember thinking FFVII was the pinnacle of graphical achievement, and couldn't imagine games looking any better. Great line of consoles.
I remember switching on HD for the first time on the PS3. I was playing RE5, and I was confused by how blurry the game was. I realised I had forgotten to turn on the setting in the video settings and my mind was officially mind blown. Everything was so sharp, and so crisp that I didn't even know how I put up with SD. I do like the only ascetics of older consoles, but once I hit ps3 I need to have it in HD
Same here, first game I ever played was re4 back in 2013, yeah my dad made me grow up on the good stuff making my game taste really good and I was 3 so y'all might not expect much but I grew up on old shit and good games like Spyro, Spyro riptoes rage, mortal Kombat, pinball, street fighter, Rayman origins, Disney infinity, all the Lego games, and I have the whole RE franchise now including the ogs😅
In 2000, when the PS2 was announced and launched, the computer stores, magazines, newspaper were flooded with promotions about it in my city. It took the world by storm, much like what an iPhone 4/5 did back then. PS2 games like FF, GTA, NFS, MGS, DMC were also very playable too. Definitely a huge part of my childhood.

I can now say that I've owned every major Playstation model. My first system was an SNES, but I was a little too young to enjoy it as much as when I got the PS1. I played Gran Turismo with my brother one night after he got off work from Funcoland, and I was hooked. The following Christmas he and my parents threw in for the console, and I played through all the big hits with Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot 2, Jet Moto 2, NHL 1999 (Eric Lindros being on the cover was amazing growing up a Flyers fan), Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, Gran Turismo 1 and 2, and my favorite game of all time, Star Ocean Second Story. I ended up skipping PS2 for the most part and eventually got an XB360, but went back to Sony for the PS3, bought the PS4 at launch and after a year and a half was able to grab a PS5. I also finally bought a PS2 and have been working my way through some of the games I missed during that console generation, completing the cycle. The plan is to put all of these old system in a game room with a quality converter to mimic a CRT, and give my kids the ability to experience each generation.
Just got my ps5, and I have all of them besides the first playstation. They somehow find a way to kick it up a notch every single time. The ps4 amazed me when it released. I didn’t see any way they could improve, and still they did. The UI is one of my favorite upgrades from the ps4. It’s so sleek and perfect. It feels like something straight out of the future. The ps2 is still my favorite and I still play on it today, but it’s crazy how well the 5 outperforms all of them. I wonder how they will improve it with the ps6, but I know they will find a way because Sony always does.
Very good video. But, I believe the Dreamcast offered online gaming before Sony as the PS2 was launched after the Dreamcast. Also, the PS3 sold more than the Xbox 360.
Wrong. SEGA Genesis offered online gaming before any other console. The Sega Channel is a discontinued online game service developed by Sega for the Sega Genesis video game console, serving as a content delivery system. Launched in December 14, 1994, the Sega Channel was provided to the public by TCI and Time Warner Cable through cable television services by way of coaxial cable.

I heard as well that apparently an important part of what seemed to aid Sony with PS2 sales was the fact that it cost a very similar amount (or sometimes even less) than a DVD player whilst being able to play DVDs, so people were buying the console instead of the standalone DVD player.

Something you didn't mention about the PS3, the reason it launched with such a high price tag was they had physically integrated a PS2 inside of the system so it had the ability to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games natively with hardware (not through software emulation)
This allowed for full backwards compatibility for all of their titles but drastically increased the manufacturing costs
As they released different Iterations of the Fat PS3 they slowly removed these features until it was strictly subpar software emulation
People like to say they want backwards compatibility but if they really did they would have to pay for it, and history shows people don't want to pay for it...
The pricing actually makes sense now but only for people who did not have either a PS1 or a PS2, which most of them did.
I didn't know that PS3 could play 1&2 games. Wow.
it was actually the blu ray drive that jacked up the price.

Just a note on the PS1. It was also a middle finger to Nintendo whom had backed out of a deal with Sony for a disc add-on for the SNES. To add salt to injury Nintendo then backed one of Sony's rivals.

Some additional points:
_PS2_ - Was also a functional DVD player.
One final point though:
_"I bought every Playstation Ever."_
*PSP and PSV cry in the corner*
Those were pretty impressive little machines that blasted their competition (DS/3DS) out of their water both graphically and in terms of sound and just plain looked more premium.

Something that was left out of the video was the disc medium for each of the first three generations. From CD to DVD and to Blu-ray. Many where bought just to play DVDs and Blu-rays.
Yes for around $900 AUD the PS3 was a cheaper bluray player than other bluray standalone players, many a parent was convinced that the PS3 had blurays, for the kids the fact it played games was a bonus.

depending on the tv you had, you could even turn it on with the tv remote by selecting the output to HDMI on the tv (where the PS3 was connected).

This video brought back fond memories. Two things I've disliked over the years though(and it's my only complaint)is how the price at this point has far outpaced inflation(making it more appealing to serious gamers and folks with disposable income) and the lack of backward compatibility after the original PS3
The inflation is affecting them, why'd you think they would increase prices? They have employees to feed and don't forget about the people at the top

Most gaming homes have a PC, tablet or a PS variant.
But majority in the world don't even play games anymore. It's a wasteland like circa late 80s and early 90s when most people cringed even of the though of games. We are back there.
PS1 and PS2 revolutionized the gaming world and after that the corporate greed killed gaming again.

@@gobineko8121 Possibly, I’ll take a better look into it soon.
Wasn't it Philips?

Gran Turismo 4 was one of the game that could support that.
wow, there are some things you mentioned that i've never heard before, so cool.

I wonder how they will improve it with the ps6, but I know they will find a way because Sony always does.
buy the ps1 it’s not that expensive
@Mohammed zeyton i dont think it worth it now
Ps5 is not that greater than ps4 though, the way they are making it look like
@@chrismix12 it’s better
@Chris rocks oh it is definitely definitely better.
I know cause owned both and it is day and night specially the controller and ui
Very good video. But, I believe the Dreamcast offered online gaming before Sony as the PS2 was launched after the Dreamcast. Also, the PS3 sold more than the Xbox 360.
Yes it did. Phantasy star online was a huge game back on the Dreamcast thanks to its online capabilities
@@retroprochannel8355 we are talking about console with online capability right from the box. No need to buy accessories. But I believe the Dreamcast was not even the first console to have online capability right from the box. I believe apple console was the first one from 1996. So, in a sense, you are correct. I was wrong. 😅
You're definitely a big fan of Playstation Devices, from Portables to Consoles
The absolute best thing about the PS2 (and to an extent, the PS3): backwards compatibility
and ps5
@@BPK3 not really, considering you could also do that on the PS3.
@@BPK3 I got r/woosh'ed
