you missed something very important about why Nintendo DS and DSi were such a success. In poor countries or countries where we couldn't buy or afford buying game cartridges, sellers were offering homebrew cartridges with SD cards where you can download and play roms. this made the sales explode in countries where nintendo traditionally has no presence
Fun fact: the Nintendo ds is region free so you can play the import games
No that's not correct. I work for Nintendo
and what's correct then @@waffle825 ? i'm talking about countries where nintendo never sold products, like in africa. even if you want to buy games legally there was no way. unless someone brings them from abroad. so having the homebrew cartridge made the console very popular.

I bought a DS for my dad for his birthday, my mom said she wanted one for Christmas the same year. They were smokers at the time and you could always find them sitting on their porch each playing their DS. They were both in their late fifties. They started with rain teasers and bundle games with sudoku and puzzles and moved on to Mario Kart and Zelda. My mom has replayed Ocarina of Time several times😂

This is a really good collection, but before the Game Boy Color there was also the Game Boy Pocket. This was a slimmed down version of the first Game Boy that required fewer batteries. There was also the Game Boy Light, which is essentially the Game Boy Pocket that had a backlit display and only released in Japan. Game Boy Micro was an interesting release and you can consider it the Game Boy Advance slim.
Also the whole exchangeable games for one console stuff was already desinged by Milton Bradleys Microvision in 1980 or so. I really missed the Game Boy light in this development since having a lit up screen is now such a common thing.
I was gonna comment this! I had a GameBoy Pocket as a kid and spent hours playing Link's Awakening on it!
He also missed gameboy micro lol
Also there are two GBA sp's. The first version, the ags 001, had a frontlit screen while the revision, the 101, had a proper backlit screen. In the video, he said that the sp was now backlit but showed the 001, which has washed out colors due to the frontlight. Would have been nice to show how beautiful the 101 screen is :))

well the gameboy color was my second nintendo handheld device of my childhood so i had a clear clamshell that somehow isnt yellow stained so well done arun. thanks for bringing me nostalgia, japanese exclusive pokemon yellow and tetris was my favourite game.
From my first console to my most recent I have to give it credit to the *NEW* 3DS XL that made me love games so much. So glad it was my first console.
What's incredible to me is how I often would end up getting a new handheld system roughly every time I got a new Pokemon game.
First the Gameboy with Pokemon Red, then the Gameboy Color with Pokemon Silver. My cousins got the GBA and then a year later got the SP so I got their old GBA and grabbed Pokemon Sapphire and Pokemon Firered. Then I got my DS Lite and with that came Pokemon Pearl, Pokemon SoulSilver and Pokemon White. My DS Lite was my go to for years and only briefly did I get a New 3DS XL (for Pokemon X of course) before finally getting the Switch for Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet and Arceus.
The evolution of Nintendo handhelds was in many ways assisted by the Pokemon franchise.
I played my 3DS to death when it came out. And I absolutely loved those 'gimmicks' (face raiders, AR cards, etc.) God knows how many hours I spent on those alone.
Not to mention Streetpass / Spotpass. I was obsessed lol.
Me too! Out of all my friends I was the only one who actually used and loved the 3D effect. Still one of my favourite aspects of the system when I go back to it.
Same. StreetPass/Spotpass and Hatena were amazing. When in Japan, everyone and their grandmother had a 3DS. When in Texas, finding characters to help beat the adventure games was especially difficult when you have to bump into players. If you were in Tokyo between 2010-2015, you could get tons of StreetPass characters in less than 5 minutes being on the train. I had to take a charger with me.
Did the same with the DSI. The battery almost blew up
same, especially face raiders for me. I remember the last boss used to continue fighting after getting 'afro-ed' and used to trigger me so much
Yes bro you are right
The DS, and specifically the DS Lite and DSi, was basically my whole childhood as a kid born in 2003. I have so many memories of a thing called Summer School that my local nursery did where kids up to the age of 9 could go there during the day in summer and basically do nothing. There was like me and 2 or 3 other people who consistently brought our DSs and played Mario Kart against each other for hours. I even still sometimes play my DSi XL which was the last DS console I owned just because I love the nostalgia of playing the same games I spent so much of my childhood playing. It's kind of a shame current kids and the next gen of kids aren't gonna have an experience like that. Thanks for the throwback mate!

I remember that on the 22nd of December, 2017, I had finally, after 12 years, worn out my DS. I was playing Mario Bros at 12:30 a.m., and the button to turn it off wouldn't go down, so that's when I realized I had finally worn it out and then got a 2DS a month after it was thrown out
Just as an aside, the GBA SP had two different models.
The AGS-001, which had a front-lit display, and the AGS-101, with a backlit one. Most people remember the latter, but I have the former. If you pressed the button with the sun on it, it essentially turned the screen into the original GBA’s. 🙂
+ the colors really pops in the sun in comparison!! I wish portable game consoles were still made as an option to have transflective screens.
He also missed out the Gameboy Light. Although Japan only it should be listed in this lineup. Oh and the 2DS and 2DS XL, although the XL is similar to the 3DS XL, the smaller 2DS is a very different console.
Oh and the pocket, how could I forget that.
Not entirely true: the most common and most sold one is the 001, with a front-lit screen. The AGS-101 (backlit, much nicer screen) sold in smaller numbers and went on sale when the DS was already on the market. AGS-101's are much more expensive on the second hand market, because they are much harder to find. The difference is HUGE though and I think it's worth it. The SP in this video is a front-lit AGS-001, so small 'mistake' there. :)

The fact that Nintendo put Xenoblade on the new 3ds is still mind-blowing.
A memory that really sticks with me is when we did dance competitions when I was about 12/13 and so many people had a Nintendo DS, and we would Pictochat with a whole bunch of strangers across this huge hall. We had so much fun chatting and being silly.
I still remember buying the Oled Switch last year, booting it up and seeing how crisp the quality it is. Even till this day everytime I boot it up once a while it still surprised me and some part in me will just quietly screams "Good god this looks amazing"

@@mrblack576 first of, nostalgia, second of, the nintendo switch has a lot of exclusive games that are only on it like the legend of zelda breath of the wild, super mario odyssey, animal crossing, the pokemon games and a lot more than that, third of, its portable which is a very big selling point because you can play your favourite games on the go, and there are a lot of other reasons as to why someone would buy a switch.

I love that Nintendo isnt afraid of trying new things even when they arent so good👍
i agree, they alway dare to try new techonology everytime. VR, 3D, double screen with touch screen, motion controls,... all of them was very new when it came out, their hardware was not always the strongest, but i really enjoy the fun of their consoles.
My first handheld gadget was the Game Boy Advanced in Pink with see through case. I was in Highschool. I was stupid that I sold it but I bought it back. Then my next Handheld was the Game Boy Micro.
I noticed you left out a few revisions of the Gameboy, like the Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Light and the Gameboy Micro. And you also didn't talk about the Pokemon Mini devices, either. i had a mario kart 7 edition 3ds on my birthday a few years ago. The switch didnt exist so i was really excited. Even tho i have a Xbox series x now, its still really good when im going somewhere.
I am a child of the very early 80s, and that original gameboy was my first handheld device. This video brought back so many memories as I haven't seen that thing in decades. Arun, my brothers and I were big into gaming, and there were some high end, expensive systems that were released in Japan around the same time that were significantly better than what we had in the U.S. My family bought them at a specialty gaming store in the late 80s or early 90s. One was Turbo Graphics 16 (or something like that). It had these really small cards that acted as the games, and this was when we had those large Nintendo and Sega Genesis cartridges (though the Sega's were a bit smaller as far as I remember. The graphics on that Turbo Graphics 16 was revolutionary. Also, the best handheld of all time was released around the same time, the Turbo Express, which was about the size of a gameboy but played the full fat turbo graphics 16 games. And it was color! It was amazing. Lastly, and the best system IMO ever released for its era, was the Neo Geo. It had these massive cartridges, but the graphics were like nothing that would be seen for years after. It felt like you were playing arcade games in your home, which was amazing at the time. Not sure if these things will ever make their way into a video, but trust me as someone who grew up at that time, they really changed the entire landscape of home gaming.

Hey Arun, i noticed you didn't cover the Gameboy Micro during the transition from the Gameboy SP to the DS. I remember when i was in Junior High i had the sp growing up along with a few friends in band class and other classes, that i eventually got the Micro and it was a gamechanger from how small it was to put in my pocket with it's microfiber case and wasn't a bulge in my pocket or digging into my thigh. The screen was also a lot brighter and felt a lot crisper. That and i think it had a longer play time. I reviewed specs and it says it was worse than the SP but i couldnt see much of a difference. Would be a cool idea if you did a review on it lol. But this and the Sony Handheld videos were great and love the quality of the vids, that i started a rabbit hole into your channel, as I'm also a big game/console collector as well.
I actually loved the Nintendo 2DS. I bought it during my apprenticeship when I didn't had the budget for a 3DS. I could play all of my old DS games but also enjoy newer games. I had around 2.5 hours daily commute and it made many long train rides enjoyable.

I also have a 2DS (Pokemon Sapphire edition) and I love it. So comfortable to hold along with the stylus. Haven't experienced holding any 3DS model but I did get to experience playing with my neighbor's 2DSXL. The design was nice but it felt flimsy and the stylus was too short for my liking.

It's awesome how he's got a entire room full of phones, I hope he does a similar thing with all the consoles and handhelds that hes brought for all these videos. It would look amazing to have them with the correct lighting in the background blue for sony and red for nintendo all presented in the way he makes the thumbnails.
I'd pay to be able to visit his collection and try out all the various phones, consoles and gadgets...
Awesome video! And thanks for the dedication! One thing to add, you forgot the New 2DS console.
The Gameboy is as old as I am and I have such fond memories growing up playing Pokemon on it.
And I'd had one version or another of every one of these consoles since then.
