Still use a S8+ as a work phone. Great phone. Other than speakers I don't feel that my newer Samsung's were vastly superior considering how many features have been dropped since.
I used a s9+ for 4+ years and that phone was built like a brick(I have butter fingers(like linus) and my mom actually threw the phone multiple times with anger and there were no cracks in the glass)
I've had the S10+ for almost 4 and a half years and I wanna buy the S24 Ultra but to be honest I don't have a good reason. The phone still works very well. I guess the cameras are getting old but I watched my vlogs on a laptop and they we good. I've fallen victim to marketing, honestly.
I remember seeing adverts for the Galaxy S8 and was thinking to myself along the lines of ‘Yes!! Finally!! Samsung did away with the capacitive keys I'd keep tapping by accident!!’, but also ‘Samsung, please release the Galaxy Note8!!!!’ which they did later that year. I of course pre-ordered one to replace my OnePlus One that had its baseband fail and my LG Stylus 3 I had as a temporary phone for mobile network access.
yeah I wish marques would've highlighted how big of a change the S8 was. It was the first main stream phone to really get rid of those top and bottom bezels, and it was so cool. It also essentially one-upped the iPhone X release that would happen later.

I still have an S8 as my daily phone, and the battery is the original one. It lasts almost 3h of screen time. I usually charge twice a day. It's ok for me
Galaxy S10 is GOAT Samsung. Full screen design, three camera setup, expandable storage, headphone jack, fingerprint sensor under screen, edge display. Just doesn’t get any better.
i go back and fourth between my note 20 and note 10, the newer having 120hz display is a big advantage but i still miss my headphone jack. also the finger print sensor on the 20 seems more accurate but maybe thats just me

The Galaxy S3 was the first smartphone that I felt "loyal" to. That phone stuck with me through drops, crashes, blizzards, and just kept trucking. One of the most legendary phones ever.
My friend in middle school had the S3 and I had some Samsung Chat blackberry looking phone as my first phone ever. I then upgraded to the S4 mini after the screen died. Then it dropped off my bed and somehow the screen broke again completely. Then I got a pretty crappy A3 2015 which was a total POS after nearly 4 years. Garbage camera, I actually stopped bothering taking pictures, 16gb STORAGE, battery was non existent, slow af in the end. In summer of 2019 I upgraded to the S10 and it was a massive upgrade to say the least lol. Absolute beast and earlier this year I was thinking this phone could easily last me another 2 years. But I noticed in the last months things have been notably slower at times, buggier in various apps, and I just realized I was starting to get used to it being slow. After 6+ years it still holds up for most things imo, easily the best phone I ever had. I was gonna upgrade next year but I got basically a 50% discount on a brand new S25 Ultra so paying like €440 which is hard to pass. The phone will be a lot bigger than my S10 but I'm sure I'll get used to that over time lol.

In South Korea, there are three major Carrier : KT, LG U+, and SK telecom. When the Galaxy was first released, it came out exclusively with SK telecom (SKT), hence the name Galaxy S. There are also models like Galaxy K (SHW-M130K) and Galaxy U (SHW-M130L). If Galaxy had been released exclusively with Verizon in the United States, it would likely have been named Galaxy V. haha.
One thing that people don't realize is they got rid of the note and kept the s, but when you do the research on the phone, they actually got rid of the s and kept the note.And gave the note, the s name😂
I used to quickly unlock my phone by pressing the pressure sensitive button while I took it out of my pocket and did a swipe without ever lifting my finger. The iris scanner did the rest😂 felt smooth
I still have my s10 plus, great phone tho significantly slower now. I also still have my S7, my s4 and my note 10 plus still running. Tho switched to iPhone and Pixel already as my daily drivers.
S9 plus was peak. SD card, waterproof, headphone jack, heartrate sensor, customizable hotkey, buttons on the correct sides, symmetric display without cutouts, dualsim etc. Only things missing are removable battery, FM, and IR blaster I think?
Indeed! I've had the s9+ since 2018 and the only reason i had to change it was because of a malfunctioning sd card i bought. It ruined the OS. Still have the phone though and it's still working great!
Loved my S9+ but the battery was on it's last legs and I was tired of carrying a power bank around so upgraded to an S23U a few months ago due to a deal I couldn't refuse 😉 Hope it lasts as long as the S9+ (and the Note4 it replaced)
One UI needs a mention. It strengthened Samsung strong hold in software as best custom Android and better than Google in terms of updates until last year.
I think best custom android might be a stretch, perhaps most feature rich? it was a HUGE jump over touchwiz for sure, but at the time Oxygen OS or the Pixels implementation (which is no longer stock) were still the favoured OS of the majority of reviewers. Oxygen OS is kinda dead now because of the whole OPPO thing, but the pixel is still widely considered the best implementation of android. As for updates both are now even as you alluded to.
Both offer the same 7 years of feature updates now, so not better, but on par. I would still argue the pixel has the edge as they are FAR faster at providing updates for aging devices than Samsung is@nvssgoat

S10 will always be peak for me. It was the phone with the most, it had all the things the current phones have, like triple cameras, under screen fingerprint scanner etc. still had headphone jack, Micro sd card slot, the heart rate monitor and 1440p screen. Every model after this they slowly removed all these features... I really want a new phone with better cameras, but it's hard to let go of the s10 and lose all those features.
I agree with you, the last Samsung Galaxy S with both headphone jack and microSD card slot, plus still has a lot of the modern features like full front screen (almost). In fact it's my main phone to this day. My biggest gripe is the sides of the phone curving over the edge. Almost wish I got the S10e with the flat screen with no curves. I get a lot of missed inputs that can be frustrating at times because the screen simply won't respond because some of my fingers are 'bleeding' over the edges and touching the screen. The curved screen may have been popular for looking cool, but functionally it was annoying. Many people agree including Marques himself.
The S6 model I used to have had an IR transmitter in it, which made it possible to control your TV (the phone could act as any remote). This was such a nice party trick to turn on a random TV on the streets.

Great video! But small correction, the Galaxy S10 does also have variable aperture. You can actually hear the physical movement of it every time you open the camera.

You are completely right. It still is one of the best phones Samsung created. I have my S9 and I am not going to switch until they bring back the headphone jack. So everything after S10 has been garbage.
As an iPhone user since the 3GS, I feel the Galaxy s8 was the first time Samsung indisputably outshined apple, the insanely narrow bezels (for the time), home button removal and camera performance legitimately had me jealous. With the iPhone X’s release later the same year, 2017 really felt like the start of modern smartphones
@whutthehell you are stuck in like 2009, bruh. The only Samsung part Apple uses is the display panel (but they also use LG panels). Apple has almost complete control end-to-end of the iPhone. It's literally why they've been fighting anti-competitive lawsuits for years now. Samsung uses Google software, Qualcomm chips, Sony lenses. Did you think they built their own parts? lol
It is crazy how even today the S8 design still look stunning and futuristic, my favorite design from the front. I actually love the S6 back design, something about the metal and glass that makes it feel like jewelry compared to previous and future generations
Front of S8 is definitely really smooth looking and in contrast to "modern" phones screen doesn't have ugly hole in it. But that fashion of slippery glass backs is complete garbage made to increase risk of phone breaking and needing replacing. And in Europe Samsung's Excryment... Exynos chipset sucks by hogging 1% of battery per hour for doing absolutely nothing but maintaining standby network connection... Unless disabling 4G, which still doesn't result in good runtime.
I've owned a Samsung Galaxy Y, S3, S6, S8, S10 and S22 Ultra, and my S8 is by far my favourite. I remember when I got it I was amazed at the looks, and so was everyone I knew. I became a celebrity at school for a week when I first got it!
I use an app to put an RGB circle around my S23 camera cutout to emulate the notification LED from older phones. Not as bright and it is a 3rd party app, but it brought back an important feature

I got s10+ in 2019 i believe and since day 1 till now i dont ever wanna change it, im sure one day ill have to but i wish they wiuld just keep making them because this is the perfect phone for me. The storage space the extra storage you can keep, dual sim 3 cameras the size the shape everything.
Man I loved my S10, esp when I was using the iris scanner to unlock the phone when I was wearing gloves at work. But I was swayed by the trade in offer (and dying battery) to an S21 U, which I also really liked, especially since it had S Pen functionality. They gave me a free upgrade in internal storage too, which I accepted and turns out that tbh I didn't need an SD card anymore since there was so much internal storage (for me anyways) that I could ditch the SD card and not have to worry about it possibly dying on me, and having to move apps back and forth. Now on an S23U cause I thought battery would die in the S21U in 2 years like it did for the S10, but it surprisingly didn't, so gonna wait for longer than my 2 year cyclic upgrade routine since the S4 (that, and the built in stylus was better than clipping the pen on the side). I still missed my iris scanner though, especially during covid with masks.
Strangely enough i remembered the Galaxy S2 with a square home button and a squared shape camera unit at the back with the large "8.0 megapixel" written on it. It really went on the the whole square/rectangular theme all around. Damn that phone was light and easy to carry around.
S24 brings back the split of Exynso vs Snapdragon. As a person with Exynos option I'm devastated we pay the same price and we're getting a second tier components.
Yeah, seems a lot of the big tech channels are avoiding talking about that . MB said it happened for the s9 and thats it was bad, but failed to mention that its happened every year since then except for the s23. Tech channels wont mention it to save themselves backlash or something. Whatever the reason, its obviously not their priority. But some people have done good comparison vids between the "models", i recommend them
It feels like almost nobody talks about this. I had S7 and S10. As a tech enthusiast I was super pissed for getting lower performance for the same price. This is, ultimately, what brought me into the iphone world.

According to The Korea Economic Daily, Qualcomm abused the ‘standard essential patent’ license to prevent Samsung from selling its modems and integrated chipsets for around 25 years. According to the source, this is considered as an unfair practice and has been confirmed by the Fair Trade Commission. To recap, the Fair Trade Commission had decided to fine Qualcomm $865 million over antitrust violations, which stated that the company violated the law of competition, but the chipset manufacturer intends to appeal the decision.
I went from s10+ to s23 ultra and don't miss any of those features like I first thought I would. Nothing wrong with the s10+ though, it still is a great phone and I would probably still have it if I wasn't after the spen at the time I traded.
😭😭😭😭😭 I never experienced that. I born too late... For reference my first phone was a Motorola Moto G10 Power at my 15 birthday. A super phone for me back in the day, then 2 years later when my phone died I upgraded to the S23 Ultra, a gigantic step forward, but nothing new and that´s deppresing, just supercharged specs, maybe the software? 😅🤣
Ye I remember when it first launched. I was absolutely astonished by how it looked. It looked so "futuristic", in a sense. It was a completely novice thing to just remove the bezels, so seeing that happen was just so damn awsome
@Rico-oz4ct not quite right because the S6 (launched 2015) started that trend. S7 Followed and then the S8 flexed its 80%. S7 had 76% while the G6 had 78% a year later. Samsung challenged the bezels first.
Most definitely not. The S10 sucked compared to the S9+ which was peak Samsung. The closest thing was the S22 Ultra. Although the Samsung Galaxy S4 will always hold a special place in my heart since that was my first change over to Android from iPhone
S10 also has dual aperture. My current phone, love it. For me, the best looking Galaxy S they made. Also, love the fact the camera is centered in the back of the phone.
Yep, the S10 is definitely peak Galaxy S. It had every feature which proved to work in previous generations (including variable aperture), it was still leap forward from previous year, was original and recognisable, and was great to hold! S20 managed to lost lots of the great stuff in single year and even s24 is still lacking in several areas compared to s10. What a fun it was to follow announcements of new phones from this lineup back in the days.
It was gorgeus, but i am loving the flat screen of my s24. The curve is beautiful, but not practical. Cases, screen protectors and just loss of functionality in the edges makes this desing better. And too be fair after the s10 my favorite phone ever was the iphone 4 and this design makes me think of that one.
S4 also had my favorite long forgotten feature, the ir blaster. I still miss having the ability to turn down or mute overly loud televisions in public places.
S4 and S8 were absolutely mindblowing phones for the time. I still remember seeing de S8 for the first time. Probably one of the best designed phones of all time
was thinking about Samsung with the S8 but went Huawei at that time with their P10 (then the whole getting banned from android happened and I switched to the S21 instead of another Huawei)
While you emphasized the S23 switch from Exynos to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ has the Exynos 2400 chipset so it is more like a one-off exception rather than a significant change.
I came to the comments to mention the same thing. The international S24 & S24+ has the Exynos 2400 chipset. While the US/Canada/China models have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
You missed some really important stuff regarding the S5 IMO. S5 was IP67 WITH a removable back cover (i went snorkeling with it, filming underwater). It also had the option to preserve this AND add wireless charging. Samsung provided replaceable back covers, one of which added a coil connecting to predefined pins on the back of the phone. Thus the S5 was the first wireless charging phone in the S series, not the S6. I had that exact setup, awesome times. The S4 could sense your fingers from 1 inch away off the screen, it had animations on the lockscreen and other preview features in the software which eventually landed on the Note with the S pen. It also had a high sensitivity toggle which allowed you to wear any gloves and still use the touchscreen. The S3 launched with the "S Beam" which, provided you would tap the back of two phones, would make a transfer of the selected files/links/apps, similar to what Apple introduced with the iOS17 update. My S7 Edge is a true hero, it is still being used as the main phone from 2016, marking its 8 years anniversary. Its only downfall (aside from the battery and the lack of software updates) is the AMOLED screen which burnt in eventually. Fingerprint sensor works like new, camera looks fine, great piece of technology.
The first wireless charging phone in the S series was not S5, but S3 - it also had 2 pins exposed and you had to buy a back cover with Qi coil. It wasn't the first mainstream phone to have Qi charging though - Nokia Lumias were ahead of Samsung with this, and IIRC the Qi was ready-to-use there with no fiddling or paying extra.
@ikuturso7570 For me SD always was just bit better not because points in benchmarks, UI was slightly smoother on these, which made experience more pleasing.

s7 edge, s8 and s9 are it for me. But I remember being absolutely blown away by S6's camera. Man phones used to be so much fun back then. Since S10 we're just so lost.
True back then each year a lot of advancements were being made and newer phones had newer designs. Now they're all the same. I'm still fine with my almost 4yr old s20 as it feels basically the same in day to day usage with the newer devices
the SUPER battery saving mode on s5 was the best!! went full b&w, basic features, but would last FOREVER. i could go to sleep with 5% battery and be confident my alarm would go off & i could text the next morning
Mistakes I noticed: - the S8 isn't the first galaxy S phone to have exynos, but it's the first in a while where the exynos is worse than the snapdragon - the S9 wasn't the last galaxy S phone to have dual aperture, the S10 series also had it - the S10e had the same charging speed as the S10 and S10+: 15W
Hold on a minute. There was NO S7 Edge + version, only regular S7 and Bigger S7 Edge with 5.5" display. This was the period when i worked at our biggest tech shop in Ukraine (Citrus), so i remeber this fact pretty clearly
Another factual error : “First usb type c” (yes it’s first on S8, but first samsung was Note7) “First more than one camera” - galaxy s9 plus had 2 cameras “Dual aperture gone next model” - s10 did retain the dual aperture
S1, S3, Note 3, Note 4, S7E, Note 9, S10E, S21U, S23U, with a few other brands in the mix. at one point I averaged a new phone every 8 months 😅 my favorite, aside from my current S23U, was the Note 4. removable battery, headphone jack, etc.

I made a switch from my iPhone 5s to the Galaxy S8, and I absolutely loved that phone when I had it. The iris scanner was such a sick feature, especially before Face ID became a norm.
its in s9 as will. which i updated its firmware to android 13 one ui 5. just as if its s20. and i like it. it dose not have the iris scanner any more. but cant say i miss it.

Actually, in Europe, we had the s3 style from the begining, with the home physic button and two capacitive buttons for menu and back. And subtle changes on the style of the camera too. I think they look a loot cooler. I still have my s2 and s4 in a drawer. Man did I love those...
Same in Asia and Oceania. However, the US received different versions of the Galaxy S and S2, then with the S3, the US received the same design as the rest of the world but with additional branding on the back, and starting with the S10, the same overall design as the rest of the world.
Had to pause watching to comment. Seeing the S3 is so nostalgic, as a tech enthusiast it was the first truly smart phone I could afford to buy. I had to get it imported into New Zealand and didn’t regret it one bit. Everybody thought I was crazy having such a big phone, but I loved it. (Typing this on a 6.7 inch screen seems ironic)
Why did you have to import the s3 into new Zealand? I thought that was available at retail here considering I own a few of them that are telecom branded? Were they not available at launch. Although I'm currently trying this on an imported google pixel.
@Shaddow798New Zealander here, I bought mine from JB Hi-Fi on release. They were definitely available on release at retailers here, however we got the Exynos version of the S3 here and if you wanted the Snapdragon version with more RAM you had to get it imported
Can’t remember now all the details but I thought the S4 was first one available from Telecom?? Maybe I’m wrong after all these years thought I got it through a parallel importer to get an unlocked version. I do remember loving the phone though
Samsung Galaxy S3 was my first smartphone. I was actually living in Seoul at the time. Opened in it a taxi on my way to my apartment because I was so excited. I definitely miss the swappable battery. Was pretty nice being able to just pull a battery out of the charger at home, plug it in, and then go out at night on the town.
The S7 Edge was peak. They called me crazy for praising a 2 year old phone back in the day, but I haven't changed my mind after having lost touch with smartphone tech for a while.
I had an S7 Edge, actually the exploded phone is on my shelf right now - I'm looking at it. It was pretty decent phone, one of the best I've used... but... certainly wasn't peak Samsung. The phone cracked, it had that purple line when it cracks too, it would start to overheat, couldn't play high-end games - it was also too small for gaming, my fingers would cover up the screen, and the camera wasn't the great. We have different definitions of peak Samsung, for sure. But I'd confidentially saying peak Samsung is the S21 (my current phone) since I mean, S22, 23 and 24 have little-to-no improvements on it, with the next peak Samsung being either the S9 or the S6 (both for innovation sakes). The S10 wasn't so bad either 😂
I hated that phone, I managed to break the scren 3 times on it, and i have had s phones from s2 until s24 no one had those issues. I once tipped a mug over the s7 edge and the screen cracked. I twas slippery, the edge was way to much etc. There´s a reason those edges are more or less gone. S9 was awesome.
I agree reliability isn't s7 edge's best suit, but I love it for it's design, the feeling of holding it, it felt like a flat soap🤣, this phone taught me how to replace phone parts, replace a phone screen, 2 logic board snatch from cheap broken screen phone, new battery and glass backplate I wouldn't say this phone have much original parts left lol, still love this thing
You forgot to mention the S3 was THE defining moment of Samsung. They overhauled & changed everything. This new Super AMOLED display 720p and design was simply incredible. It definitely caught my eye back in the day and it’s reign was incredible. Really put it on the map imo. S4 was a tad pretty cool upgrade but S kinda got lost from the 5. S6 edge had the greatest curve, the 7’s curved was reduced and kept being reduced at time went by smh they should’ve kept the same deep curve. Still have my S9+ and LOVE that physical home button at the bottom. Sad they went away from it.
S5 had an IR blaster. Loved it, allowed you to run any T.V., stereo, vcr or dvd player. Easy to program. Didn't need a stack of remotes next to me and though remotes always seemed to grow legs I always knew where my phone was. 😉
Omg yess I remember insisting that my family let me be the one to change the channel just to show off the IR remote from my s5, thought I was so cool lol
@WindoVista2007 the s9 has some subtle differences, but it was clearly a refinement of the S8 design rather than a leap forward. But to me, that was already the peak smartphone design so why change it?
Galaxy S7 was my first experience with Android, never went back to Apple other than an iPad, but eventually went from that to a Galaxy S20+, then the Z Flip 3. Now I'm onto the Galaxy S24 Ultra and they've really come a long way since the S7.
I love my s7 too before it got stolen. I used them more multifunctional like sport device, test camera and edit them on lightroom mobile, and many more. Also I kinda feel downgrade when I experienced A52. Because the IP rating kinda useless because the glue itself is not that resistant to heat after playing games. Never I had that kind experience on my S7. And my S7 is kinda goat in my opinion because I never repair myself and any kind service center due to still in good condition for 4 years using that phone.

I could not agree more that the S9 was not only peak Samsung phone design but I also think it was the pinnacle of smartphone design in general. The slimness was literally unmatched, the curved edge was amazing to feeling the palm of your hands, The fingerprint reader on the back where your finger naturally rests was literally perfect. I still have my S9 in a drawer and every once in awhile I pick it up just to feel it in the palm of my hands and it just blows my mind that nothing has even come close to feeling as sleek and perfected as this design.
I'm also still in love with that phone! mine died a long ago but I still keep it in its original box, in my room. I've just got the s24, a great phone, but it doesn't feel as perfect as the s9.
Agreed, it was the pinnacle of smartphone design with just RIGHT bezel size. The color options was top notch as well. I felt lucky to ever owned this phone.
I still own and use the S9+ right now. I wish they kept a lot of things the S9 had (The LED light for notifications, and fingerprint on the back) in the newer phones.
The S1 and S2 looked quite different here in germany. The s1 had a physical home button and 2 touchbuttons like the s3, "our" s1 had no led flash, the s2 had a home button too. I've used the s6 until 2022, then i bought a used s20 which i use still now. A fantastic device.
Yea the earlier statement about 'main' variant really needed to be said as main North American* variant! The actual main/reference version of the s & s2 was the one sold in most countries including Europe, Asia (inc Samsungs home Korean market) etc and those had physical home buttons & fm tuners (though there were still some country specific adjustments but generally much less so than the US) Not sure where the first one having small storage is from though, reference galaxy s had 8 and 16gb models
Wow I never knew this. I don't recognise the S1 or S2. Same in the UK. Two touch buttons and a physical Home button. The very first Galaxy Tab had those 4 touch buttons though.

I'll never forget the first time I saw an ad on TV for the Galaxy S8. The design was such a level up
I remember seeing adverts for the Galaxy S8 and was thinking to myself along the lines of ‘Yes!! Finally!! Samsung did away with the capacitive keys I'd keep tapping by accident!!’, but also ‘Samsung, please release the Galaxy Note8!!!!’ which they did later that year. I of course pre-ordered one to replace my OnePlus One that had its baseband fail and my LG Stylus 3 I had as a temporary phone for mobile network access.
yeah I wish marques would've highlighted how big of a change the S8 was. It was the first main stream phone to really get rid of those top and bottom bezels, and it was so cool. It also essentially one-upped the iPhone X release that would happen later.

I still have an S8 as my daily phone, and the battery is the original one. It lasts almost 3h of screen time. I usually charge twice a day. It's ok for me

Galaxy S10 is GOAT Samsung. Full screen design, three camera setup, expandable storage, headphone jack, fingerprint sensor under screen, edge display. Just doesn’t get any better.
i go back and fourth between my note 20 and note 10, the newer having 120hz display is a big advantage but i still miss my headphone jack. also the finger print sensor on the 20 seems more accurate but maybe thats just me

My friend in middle school had the S3 and I had some Samsung Chat blackberry looking phone as my first phone ever. I then upgraded to the S4 mini after the screen died. Then it dropped off my bed and somehow the screen broke again completely. Then I got a pretty crappy A3 2015 which was a total POS after nearly 4 years. Garbage camera, I actually stopped bothering taking pictures, 16gb STORAGE, battery was non existent, slow af in the end.
In summer of 2019 I upgraded to the S10 and it was a massive upgrade to say the least lol. Absolute beast and earlier this year I was thinking this phone could easily last me another 2 years. But I noticed in the last months things have been notably slower at times, buggier in various apps, and I just realized I was starting to get used to it being slow. After 6+ years it still holds up for most things imo, easily the best phone I ever had.
I was gonna upgrade next year but I got basically a 50% discount on a brand new S25 Ultra so paying like €440 which is hard to pass. The phone will be a lot bigger than my S10 but I'm sure I'll get used to that over time lol.

I used to quickly unlock my phone by pressing the pressure sensitive button while I took it out of my pocket and did a swipe without ever lifting my finger. The iris scanner did the rest😂 felt smooth

S9 plus was peak. SD card, waterproof, headphone jack, heartrate sensor, customizable hotkey, buttons on the correct sides, symmetric display without cutouts, dualsim etc. Only things missing are removable battery, FM, and IR blaster I think?

Indeed! I've had the s9+ since 2018 and the only reason i had to change it was because of a malfunctioning sd card i bought. It ruined the OS. Still have the phone though and it's still working great!

Loved my S9+ but the battery was on it's last legs and I was tired of carrying a power bank around so upgraded to an S23U a few months ago due to a deal I couldn't refuse 😉 Hope it lasts as long as the S9+ (and the Note4 it replaced)

One UI needs a mention. It strengthened Samsung strong hold in software as best custom Android and better than Google in terms of updates until last year.
It's actually NOW better than Google. They changed their flagship update policy and now the S24 and up will get 7 years of updates
I think best custom android might be a stretch, perhaps most feature rich? it was a HUGE jump over touchwiz for sure, but at the time Oxygen OS or the Pixels implementation (which is no longer stock) were still the favoured OS of the majority of reviewers. Oxygen OS is kinda dead now because of the whole OPPO thing, but the pixel is still widely considered the best implementation of android. As for updates both are now even as you alluded to.
Both offer the same 7 years of feature updates now, so not better, but on par. I would still argue the pixel has the edge as they are FAR faster at providing updates for aging devices than Samsung is@nvssgoat

S10 will always be peak for me. It was the phone with the most, it had all the things the current phones have, like triple cameras, under screen fingerprint scanner etc. still had headphone jack, Micro sd card slot, the heart rate monitor and 1440p screen. Every model after this they slowly removed all these features... I really want a new phone with better cameras, but it's hard to let go of the s10 and lose all those features.

I agree with you, the last Samsung Galaxy S with both headphone jack and microSD card slot, plus still has a lot of the modern features like full front screen (almost). In fact it's my main phone to this day.
My biggest gripe is the sides of the phone curving over the edge. Almost wish I got the S10e with the flat screen with no curves. I get a lot of missed inputs that can be frustrating at times because the screen simply won't respond because some of my fingers are 'bleeding' over the edges and touching the screen. The curved screen may have been popular for looking cool, but functionally it was annoying. Many people agree including Marques himself.

The early UI of S1-S4 is so nostalgic. Took me back to the simpler time. For my personal experience, S7 is sleek and beautiful to have.
The S6 model I used to have had an IR transmitter in it, which made it possible to control your TV (the phone could act as any remote). This was such a nice party trick to turn on a random TV on the streets.
This feature was first introduced in the galaxy S4 as I remember showing it off to my friends when I was in school
Also had that card cloning ability without NFC I used to pay using my phone everywhere before NFC was even used

As an iPhone user since the 3GS, I feel the Galaxy s8 was the first time Samsung indisputably outshined apple, the insanely narrow bezels (for the time), home button removal and camera performance legitimately had me jealous. With the iPhone X’s release later the same year, 2017 really felt like the start of modern smartphones

It is crazy how even today the S8 design still look stunning and futuristic, my favorite design from the front. I actually love the S6 back design, something about the metal and glass that makes it feel like jewelry compared to previous and future generations
Front of S8 is definitely really smooth looking and in contrast to "modern" phones screen doesn't have ugly hole in it.
But that fashion of slippery glass backs is complete garbage made to increase risk of phone breaking and needing replacing.

I use an app to put an RGB circle around my S23 camera cutout to emulate the notification LED from older phones. Not as bright and it is a 3rd party app, but it brought back an important feature

I got s10+ in 2019 i believe and since day 1 till now i dont ever wanna change it, im sure one day ill have to but i wish they wiuld just keep making them because this is the perfect phone for me. The storage space the extra storage you can keep, dual sim 3 cameras the size the shape everything.
Man I loved my S10, esp when I was using the iris scanner to unlock the phone when I was wearing gloves at work. But I was swayed by the trade in offer (and dying battery) to an S21 U, which I also really liked, especially since it had S Pen functionality. They gave me a free upgrade in internal storage too, which I accepted and turns out that tbh I didn't need an SD card anymore since there was so much internal storage (for me anyways) that I could ditch the SD card and not have to worry about it possibly dying on me, and having to move apps back and forth. Now on an S23U cause I thought battery would die in the S21U in 2 years like it did for the S10, but it surprisingly didn't, so gonna wait for longer than my 2 year cyclic upgrade routine since the S4 (that, and the built in stylus was better than clipping the pen on the side). I still missed my iris scanner though, especially during covid with masks.

Strangely enough i remembered the Galaxy S2 with a square home button and a squared shape camera unit at the back with the large "8.0 megapixel" written on it. It really went on the the whole square/rectangular theme all around. Damn that phone was light and easy to carry around.

MB said it happened for the s9 and thats it was bad, but failed to mention that its happened every year since then except for the s23. Tech channels wont mention it to save themselves backlash or something. Whatever the reason, its obviously not their priority. But some people have done good comparison vids between the "models", i recommend them

Yep, the S10 is definitely peak Galaxy S. It had every feature which proved to work in previous generations (including variable aperture), it was still leap forward from previous year, was original and recognisable, and was great to hold! S20 managed to lost lots of the great stuff in single year and even s24 is still lacking in several areas compared to s10.
What a fun it was to follow announcements of new phones from this lineup back in the days.

It was gorgeus, but i am loving the flat screen of my s24. The curve is beautiful, but not practical. Cases, screen protectors and just loss of functionality in the edges makes this desing better. And too be fair after the s10 my favorite phone ever was the iphone 4 and this design makes me think of that one.

While you emphasized the S23 switch from Exynos to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ has the Exynos 2400 chipset so it is more like a one-off exception rather than a significant change.
I came to the comments to mention the same thing. The international S24 & S24+ has the Exynos 2400 chipset. While the US/Canada/China models have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
If you buy S24/S24+ with Exynos chip, on the low volume you can hear the cries of Europeans

You missed some really important stuff regarding the S5 IMO. S5 was IP67 WITH a removable back cover (i went snorkeling with it, filming underwater). It also had the option to preserve this AND add wireless charging. Samsung provided replaceable back covers, one of which added a coil connecting to predefined pins on the back of the phone. Thus the S5 was the first wireless charging phone in the S series, not the S6. I had that exact setup, awesome times.
The S4 could sense your fingers from 1 inch away off the screen, it had animations on the lockscreen and other preview features in the software which eventually landed on the Note with the S pen. It also had a high sensitivity toggle which allowed you to wear any gloves and still use the touchscreen.
The S3 launched with the "S Beam" which, provided you would tap the back of two phones, would make a transfer of the selected files/links/apps, similar to what Apple introduced with the iOS17 update.
My S7 Edge is a true hero, it is still being used as the main phone from 2016, marking its 8 years anniversary. Its only downfall (aside from the battery and the lack of software updates) is the AMOLED screen which burnt in eventually. Fingerprint sensor works like new, camera looks fine, great piece of technology.

The first wireless charging phone in the S series was not S5, but S3 - it also had 2 pins exposed and you had to buy a back cover with Qi coil. It wasn't the first mainstream phone to have Qi charging though - Nokia Lumias were ahead of Samsung with this, and IIRC the Qi was ready-to-use there with no fiddling or paying extra.
The S4 also had optional wireless charging with an optional rear conductive cover.
S5 was very underrated in my opinion. I remember how cool it was to have water resistance back in those days

this is also true for Latin America. however, s24 ultra does have the snapdragon variant. idk if that's also the case for Europe

SD is quite a bit faster (~10%). Inferior speed would be ok, but Exynos has also worse thermals and battery life.
@ikuturso7570 For me SD always was just bit better not because points in benchmarks, UI was slightly smoother on these, which made experience more pleasing.
@towb0ati think the s24 ultras are Snapdragon-powered worldwide. but the normal & plus models are back to Snapdragon/Exynos separation routine.

s7 edge, s8 and s9 are it for me. But I remember being absolutely blown away by S6's camera. Man phones used to be so much fun back then. Since S10 we're just so lost.

True back then each year a lot of advancements were being made and newer phones had newer designs. Now they're all the same. I'm still fine with my almost 4yr old s20 as it feels basically the same in day to day usage with the newer devices

the SUPER battery saving mode on s5 was the best!! went full b&w, basic features, but would last FOREVER. i could go to sleep with 5% battery and be confident my alarm would go off & i could text the next morning
you could also replace the battery if need.
That is also the time when phones can still alarm even when it's off. The phone would turn itself on to do the alarm.

- the S8 isn't the first galaxy S phone to have exynos, but it's the first in a while where the exynos is worse than the snapdragon
- the S9 wasn't the last galaxy S phone to have dual aperture, the S10 series also had it
- the S10e had the same charging speed as the S10 and S10+: 15W
Yeah my S7 edge had the Exynos varient. At the time it was better than the Snapdragon varient.
Also, the S9+ was the first Galaxy phone with more than one camera lens

Hold on a minute. There was NO S7 Edge + version, only regular S7 and Bigger S7 Edge with 5.5" display. This was the period when i worked at our biggest tech shop in Ukraine (Citrus), so i remeber this fact pretty clearly

i had all of them up to my current s9 + the Alpha and not one of them failed! only minor software bugs

I made a switch from my iPhone 5s to the Galaxy S8, and I absolutely loved that phone when I had it. The iris scanner was such a sick feature, especially before Face ID became a norm.

its in s9 as will. which i updated its firmware to android 13 one ui 5. just as if its s20. and i like it. it dose not have the iris scanner any more. but cant say i miss it.

The S5 had an IR blaster. I added a case so I could wirelessly charge it. I still have it and use it to operate an old TV.
Actually, in Europe, we had the s3 style from the begining, with the home physic button and two capacitive buttons for menu and back. And subtle changes on the style of the camera too. I think they look a loot cooler. I still have my s2 and s4 in a drawer. Man did I love those...
Same in Asia and Oceania. However, the US received different versions of the Galaxy S and S2, then with the S3, the US received the same design as the rest of the world but with additional branding on the back, and starting with the S10, the same overall design as the rest of the world.

Seeing the S3 is so nostalgic, as a tech enthusiast it was the first truly smart phone I could afford to buy.
I had to get it imported into New Zealand and didn’t regret it one bit.
Everybody thought I was crazy having such a big phone, but I loved it. (Typing this on a 6.7 inch screen seems ironic)
Why did you have to import the s3 into new Zealand? I thought that was available at retail here considering I own a few of them that are telecom branded? Were they not available at launch.

@Shaddow798New Zealander here, I bought mine from JB Hi-Fi on release. They were definitely available on release at retailers here, however we got the Exynos version of the S3 here and if you wanted the Snapdragon version with more RAM you had to get it imported
Can’t remember now all the details but I thought the S4 was first one available from Telecom??
Maybe I’m wrong after all these years thought I got it through a parallel importer to get an unlocked version.

Samsung Galaxy S3 was my first smartphone. I was actually living in Seoul at the time. Opened in it a taxi on my way to my apartment because I was so excited. I definitely miss the swappable battery. Was pretty nice being able to just pull a battery out of the charger at home, plug it in, and then go out at night on the town.
Not talking about the iris scanner on the s8 and s9 is crazy

The S7 Edge was peak. They called me crazy for praising a 2 year old phone back in the day, but I haven't changed my mind after having lost touch with smartphone tech for a while.

I had an S7 Edge, actually the exploded phone is on my shelf right now - I'm looking at it.
It was pretty decent phone, one of the best I've used... but... certainly wasn't peak Samsung. The phone cracked, it had that purple line when it cracks too, it would start to overheat, couldn't play high-end games - it was also too small for gaming, my fingers would cover up the screen, and the camera wasn't the great.
We have different definitions of peak Samsung, for sure. But I'd confidentially saying peak Samsung is the S21 (my current phone) since I mean, S22, 23 and 24 have little-to-no improvements on it, with the next peak Samsung being either the S9 or the S6 (both for innovation sakes).
The S10 wasn't so bad either 😂
I hated that phone, I managed to break the scren 3 times on it, and i have had s phones from s2 until s24 no one had those issues. I once tipped a mug over the s7 edge and the screen cracked. I twas slippery, the edge was way to much etc. There´s a reason those edges are more or less gone. S9 was awesome.
But it had the infamous pink link display issue.
I agree reliability isn't s7 edge's best suit, but I love it for it's design, the feeling of holding it, it felt like a flat soap🤣, this phone taught me how to replace phone parts, replace a phone screen, 2 logic board snatch from cheap broken screen phone, new battery and glass backplate
I wouldn't say this phone have much original parts left lol, still love this thing
S10+ and Note 10+ will forever have my heart.
You forgot to mention the S3 was THE defining moment of Samsung. They overhauled & changed everything. This new Super AMOLED display 720p and design was simply incredible. It definitely caught my eye back in the day and it’s reign was incredible. Really put it on the map imo. S4 was a tad pretty cool upgrade but S kinda got lost from the 5. S6 edge had the greatest curve, the 7’s curved was reduced and kept being reduced at time went by smh they should’ve kept the same deep curve. Still have my S9+ and LOVE that physical home button at the bottom. Sad they went away from it.

S5 had an IR blaster. Loved it, allowed you to run any T.V., stereo, vcr or dvd player. Easy to program. Didn't need a stack of remotes next to me and though remotes always seemed to grow legs I always knew where my phone was. 😉

For me, S7 - S9 was probably the most iconic generation. The S10 was cool, but something about that S9 design just has me loving it way more.

Galaxy S7 was my first experience with Android, never went back to Apple other than an iPad, but eventually went from that to a Galaxy S20+, then the Z Flip 3. Now I'm onto the Galaxy S24 Ultra and they've really come a long way since the S7.
I love my s7 too before it got stolen. I used them more multifunctional like sport device, test camera and edit them on lightroom mobile, and many more. Also I kinda feel downgrade when I experienced A52. Because the IP rating kinda useless because the glue itself is not that resistant to heat after playing games. Never I had that kind experience on my S7. And my S7 is kinda goat in my opinion because I never repair myself and any kind service center due to still in good condition for 4 years using that phone.

I could not agree more that the S9 was not only peak Samsung phone design but I also think it was the pinnacle of smartphone design in general. The slimness was literally unmatched, the curved edge was amazing to feeling the palm of your hands, The fingerprint reader on the back where your finger naturally rests was literally perfect. I still have my S9 in a drawer and every once in awhile I pick it up just to feel it in the palm of my hands and it just blows my mind that nothing has even come close to feeling as sleek and perfected as this design.

I'm also still in love with that phone! mine died a long ago but I still keep it in its original box, in my room. I've just got the s24, a great phone, but it doesn't feel as perfect as the s9.
Agreed, it was the pinnacle of smartphone design with just RIGHT bezel size. The color options was top notch as well. I felt lucky to ever owned this phone.

The S1 and S2 looked quite different here in germany. The s1 had a physical home button and 2 touchbuttons like the s3, "our" s1 had no led flash, the s2 had a home button too.
I've used the s6 until 2022, then i bought a used s20 which i use still now. A fantastic device.
Yea the earlier statement about 'main' variant really needed to be said as main North American* variant!
The actual main/reference version of the s & s2 was the one sold in most countries including Europe, Asia (inc Samsungs home Korean market) etc and those had physical home buttons & fm tuners (though there were still some country specific adjustments but generally much less so than the US)

Wow I never knew this. I don't recognise the S1 or S2. Same in the UK. Two touch buttons and a physical Home button. The very first Galaxy Tab had those 4 touch buttons though.
