Super happy with the current M2 Air. But having used the 14" inch Pro...the even-better-1000-nits display would be nice. Or some 600...700 at least? Same with speakers, but physical size I guess dictates what is possible. Like with the phones, when owning a regular size iPhone Pro, I'm drooling for the Max...and vice versa. So maybe larger screen...or maybe not after all. When traveling, this current size is pretty much perfect.
1: smudges; I have the silver m2 MBA base model (since Aug 2022). you have to stare hard at it to see the smudges. 2: click gate; no problems with mine. 3: base model speed; not doing anything fruity with mine, so no complaints with the speed. 4 the notch; you don’t even notice it. Very happy with mine. Can’t really think of anything I’d change with it to be honest. I hope to keep it for many years. 😊

Even the base model M1 MBA is still a great buy in 2023. I’m currently using one and it is, hands down, the best computer I have ever had in my life.
@Ansible Depends on what youre going to be storing on the MBA, Ive got the 512 and 8gb RAM. I store most things on either OneDrive or iCloud but also have Windows 11 on a VM so that needed quite a bit of space. Trouble is if you upgrade the storage and ram, you're basically in M2 MBA, or even M1 Pro price range so I'd lean towards that if I'm honest. That being said I've had my M1 MBA since release and it handles everything I've thrown at it without issue
I have a 14' M1 MacBook Pro, which has been a great computer, I ordered it the first day they were available and used it on a daily basis for well over a year and it has handled everything without an issue. I was going to be issued a new laptop for work and had a couple options, decided just to pick the M2 Air so that I could have something lighter to carry around in my backpack. That was about a month ago and I have basically completely switched over to the M2 Air. Its a slightly upgraded model with 16GBs of RAM and 512GB SSD, so basically matches my Pro. I know the display is not as good, I know its not as powerful, but on a day to day basis, I just like using it better and I can't really say why. If I need to compile a large project or something like that I will pull out the 14", but for just everyday stuff the lightness and thinness of this thing is just great.
I use the m2 air as my daily driver because I work away from the office a lot, but I also hook an ultra wide monitor when I'm home. It has more than enough power for my daily tasks. One thing I look at is the memory pressure. I am always in the green even when it reads 6.5 GB of RAM usage. I will have about 5+ tabs open, watching videos, or photo processing along with other applications open from thunderbird, calendar, imessage, messenger, study tools, office apps like Word and Excel, and I am still perfectly fine to use Rawtherapee and/or GIMP. If you will never use all those applications at once, you will be fine with this laptop.
@@Obikenobi93HD Yes, mine does exactly what I need, and in fact, it does more. Because I stay around 5GB to 6GB of RAM usage. I still carry around a 2017 Macbook Air, and it's fine doing office tasks and school work. Most people do not realize their machine's true capabilities.
@@shannonrae9955 that’s awesome! Reason I went Max Ram is due to the fact that I actually connect my MacBook Air to a external monitor and have multiple windows at the same time and pretty much multitasking and great thing is that I would still have around 10-12gb of Ram left over which was worth for me of getting 24gb Ram
I would still upgrade either the ssd or ram. Ram upgrade would mean less swap, so less chance the slow ssd will bite you. Upgrade the storage and the swap will be fast again, so you’ll have better than m1 performance. For me, this modest outlay will transform this machine from good enough to great. Not everyone has a second machine to do heavy lifting on.
I have just bought a macbook air with 16GB RAM. I did not opt for a bigger SSD because the Apple price is insane - too many people have hit some bricks. I would go for an external drive to dump all my images there. 256GB is fine for me.
I have 16gb/1TB in midnight black. No clicking etc. Open and close smoothly and quitely. And i use swictheasy smoke black case to avoid finger print and protech for scratches.
I have this exact model and love it. It looks great, has the best keyboard I've ever used on a laptop and is all round brilliant. True I don't do video editing on it (wouldn't know how) and I'm sure 90% people don't need that feature. If you do you won't be buying an entry level laptop I guess. I am always wary of the 'wait for the next one' philosophy because that way you are waiting about for years maybe. Get what you need and start enjoying it now.
I own the M2 Air and went with the 512GB SSD. That was a good option for me since 256GB of storage wasn’t enough and the SSD speeds are better, especially when I start to fill the 8GB RAM and swap is needed. I also would have liked the 16GB RAM upgrade, but the price starts approaching that of the Mac Pro 14”

Big of you to admit you maybe went a bit far in praising the new M2 MacBook Air. But these issues get very polarising. That ssd issue was a real one. Even the M2 Mac mini's had it and not just at the 256Gb size but the 500Gb size too. So I had to get a 1Tb M2 Pro Mac mini to keep up the ssd speed. It seems people haven't been buying the latest range of MacBooks in the numbers you might expect. In part due to still having great M1 MacBooks but in part due to the slow ssds and throttling, oh and of course the recession. Well done for a good honest review.
3 points: 1. This is a MacBook Air. The very fact that you would even think about video editing on it is testament to the power of Apple Silicon. So far ahead of Intel 2. I am desperate for a 15” air and I think others are too. I use a 16” pro which I often have to lug about. When out of the office I use it for big documents and spreadsheets. When in the office I also do some heavy photo editing. My ideal setup would be a 15” air to take out and a mini with m2 pro for the office. And I’ll have to pay little more than the resale value of my 16 M1 Max Pro 3. Valuable consumer advice - even Apple laptops are not edible 😂😂 😂
I love my M2 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM, the thing I want the most is for it to support two external displays without needing a dock with displaylink.
Having moved from a 15” 2014 MacBook Pro to the M2 Air, I am more than happy with the Air (I did go for the 512gb version though as definitely needed more storage). No issues with mine so far, as tempted as I was by the midnight version, the fear of constant smudges meant I went for the Space Grey one, and the size and weight is perfect for me. I do wish there was a USB/Thunderbolt port on the other side though! On a side note, where is your grey mouse mat from? Cheers!
I bought one of these for my wife. I figured her needs were tiny, so it would be fine. She lent it to me to play with one day. OMG: It ran circles around my Intel i9 (2019) MBP with 32GB. When I say circles, I mean not even close. Video editing, Xcode builds, you name it. I could literally take my entire work flow and put it on her M2 Air and be MORE productive.
I love my mid tier 2022 Air and got it on sale at Best Buy the best Apple laptop i have ever owned and I own the Space Grey :). No finger prints or smudges and no chassis sounds its a sold build better than my 2018!!!!

Good job exaggerating the, "smudges" from the Midnight color. I never even think about the smudges because maybe I hold the MBA different than your example in the video. Plus, I'd like to think that I am looking at the screen about 99% of the time and not the outside of the MBA, where the smudges are, huh? The base model M2 MBA is for the casual user/the average user. Those users do not use the words video editing in their vocabulary, huh? Thank you Tim Cook for creating the Midnight color M2 MBA 👏🏽
@@MarkEllisReviews i do own one in Midnight and IMO, this is an incredible machine with value for the average user and the midnight color is outstanding. the beginning of your video does come off as a slight towards the particular color and machine. regardless, i enjoy your videos and this is an instance where i do not 100% agree with your review. keep up the great work 👏🏽
Is the mac book air 15 the end of apple? Companies dont last forever nor do their business models in a market which is changing. Across euope things are changing as a result of global waring and ukrain war. Europe is heading for a complete change in mobile devices. The consensud for the future of tis market can be summed up as .. Import duty rises where there is less than 20% local content. Enforcement of monopolies in britain to promote competition Right to repair will be enforced legally Harware sold in Europe must be capable of running five independent operating systems without modification to increase the life of hardware. The eclusive use of materials which can be recycled by a wide veriety of manufacturers. Thats phasing out more than 10% plastics content. Must be upgradeale by the owner to increase user life. The Mac book air does not conform to these new market conditions which will be adopted by many other countries .

The fact that youtubers spend so much time complaining about the "issue" of fingerprints shows how disconected they are from actual users of tech
Bless you. You do realise that entire section about the smudges has an underlying narrative of “it doesn’t matter - get over it”? Please watch and listen to us ‘youtubers’ a little closer - we might be on your side.
@@MarkEllisReviews Yes yes! I was agreeing with you, sorry, it's my poor english haha
As I said, mate - you have to own them, as I have done. You do realise this wasn’t a slight on the Midnight version, don’t you?!
@@MarkEllisReviews i do own one in Midnight and IMO, this is an incredible machine with value for the average user and the midnight color is outstanding.
the beginning of your video does come off as a slight towards the particular color and machine. regardless, i enjoy your videos and this is an instance where i do not 100% agree with your review.
keep up the great work 👏🏽
@@javtimestwo fair enough, and thanks for the kind words, but I should confirm that I like this colour buddy 😆
A lot of WGAF in this video. 👎🏼
Frankly, I'm going to buy a Refurbished M1-MacBook Air. Too many things iffy with the M2!
It’s not what you think. M2 MacBook Air has a much better design and built quality.
5 completely arbitrary reasons. No1 reason not to buy is one external display… that not make it onto the list!?
No. Because it’s my list, Tom.
@@MarkEllisReviews and smudging is higher on the list than hardware that’s been available on previous apple laptops for years. 🧐
@@tomscott88 correct. You’ve clearly been paying attention.
@@MarkEllisReviews lol good job 👍🏻
This is the most contradictory, pointless and useless review ever!
The holy trinity!
About your worse review ever.
Enforcement of monopolies in britain to promote competition
Right to repair will be enforced legally
Harware sold in Europe must be capable of running five independent operating systems without modification to increase the life of hardware.
The eclusive use of materials which can be recycled by a wide veriety of manufacturers. Thats phasing out more than 10% plastics content.
Must be upgradeale by the owner to increase user life.
The Mac book air does not conform to these new market conditions which will be adopted by many other countries .
What is the name of that desk you are using, with the fabric like top and, what looks to be, usb ports built in?
It's made by Flexispot. The desk mat is by Grovemade.
