What are your thoughts on screen protectors? I usually get marks from the keyboard on the display and the oleophobic coatings have worn off slightly from cleaning it. I would like to use aa screen protector but worry about display issues due to tight space tolerance.
I use hard cases on my MBPs since 2012 and NEVER had ANY problem. On the contrary, they kept all the MBPs new and without marks... Just buy a quality one and be happy and safe. And this is not a sponsored comment...
I used to have the hard shell case I spent 130 on it cause it was UAG and I realised that you are right he laptop cannot even hold the weight but it has saved my macbook from a few falls. The other thing i own is a keyboard cover, I have seen the keyboard case layout print on the screen and it takes forever to get them out with microfibre and solutions SO I decided that whenever I use my macbook I put the case and remove it when I am done that way I dont have to worry about it. But I do agree with a few of what you have said.
The claim that using a case for a MacBook is harmful and dangerous is complete nonsense and not based on reality. Apple itself sells hard cases in its official store, and they weigh quite a bit. I'm looking at a hard case for the MacBook Air in the official Apple store right now, and its hinge is significantly weaker than that of a regular MacBook Pro, yet this case weighs almost half a pound! That's the first point. Secondly, the pressure exerted on the hinges by a case is hundreds of times less and far less extreme than the abrupt closures shown in this video. I’ve never encountered anyone who closes their laptop with a force less than the weight of the case.
I don't use any thing to protect mine. I just use it. I'm sure my Macbook Pro will get scratches, dings and wear on it over time but that just adds to the character!
It's been 3 months since I bought my first MacBook. I bought an acrylic case by aliexpress and I was using it, until I saw some videos on the subject. I decided to remove the cover and the MacBook no longer heats up as it was before and the battery is lasting longer too, I believe the case heated the device.
What would you recommend when taking a new MacBook “M3 Pro” 14 inch through TSA to not get scratched or dented? Being taking with you in a carry on bag.

I don’t know but I feel like I’m more worried about scratches and things falling on the top of my MacBook rather than the hinge stress overtime? Is a hard case that much heavier to cause significant issues?

I've been using various keyboard covers on my MacBook and have had no issues with it affecting the screen. Maybe it was an issue with previous versions, but my M1 16 inch MacBook has had a keyboard cover on it 100% of the time for over two years.
I like a soft shell case. Thanks for the tech explanations. You have saved me from buying covers for my Macbook Air M3. Looking to buy a stand now. Nexstand K1 is looking good. Roost V3 also looks good. Any tips from you on this?
I used a keyboard cover on my last mac because my fingernails rubbed the letters off the one before that, lol- I'll take the cover off the new one before closing, thanks for the tip.

I panicked and removed it due to this video, but after looking at apples site it shows they also sponsor hardshell cases for sale with them directly. If Apple is endorsing cases is it safe to say that it shouldn't cause to much in terms of damage?
I can understand a screen protector on a phone but why would you need one on a laptop? When it's in motion, the screen will be closed and protected by the body, no?
@@aliciamartin02 Those are not scratches. those are delamination. as much as I want to protect my macbooks screen, I can't risk it for putting a screen protector. I even took off the hard case. because that can deform or damaged the macbook as well.

I've had those cases. Small rocks and dust gets inside between the case and the macbook and scratches the body. Better to use it and put it in a sleeve when you finish using it. Buy a good sleeve and you are set.
I've considered this myself... unfortunately I have seen people saying that this may leave permanent adhesive damage especially if it is left on for a long period of time like months or years.. not worth it in my opinion. I think a sleeve is the best option for protection paired with handling it very gently and being cognizant of usage.
I am also using keyboard cover and have no problem with removing them once I need to take my macbook somewhere or closing the screen before I go sleep, its not any problem
the case thing sounds kinda meh, I am still going to use one nonetheless. I just purchased a brand new M3 MBP and it gives me a sense of security having he case on. I know drops and scratches can be protected from other ways but the case is more practical than buying the hardshell sleeve in my opinion
I never used a case for my MBA other than a regular laptop bag together with other belongings. I'm always using an exclusive bin just for my laptop during the airport TSA security screening process to avoid scratches. Thats it. My MBA M1 still looks as good as new.
In regards to the usage of a keyboard cover, there isn't a reason to completely not use it. Simply take it out when you're going to close your makebook and leave it on the rest of the time.
Regarding keyboard covers, the problem is that lines will form on your display also without the keyboard cover because really, Macbooks are TOO thin. Even a slight amount of pressure will cause the keyboard to be pressed into the display, leaving marks over time.
The best thing removable cover that’s cheap removable and reusable is the sticky part of a post it note. Take it off and put in on the front shell when you need the camera and stick it back on when you’re done
As someone who got a MacBook with a hard case and keyboard cover on it used, the case protects the feet from coming off at most, and the cover… makes the keys very sticky

Wonderful video, totally makes sense to not to use such products. Well I don’t own the MacBook, but still helpful to me. I will share to those who own MacBooks
The newer hardshell cases are lighter than the old ones i assume like the one shown on the video., they also improved the design of the bottom piece not to hit the screen when closed. The hinge issue (for me) is more of a wear and tear thing because there are also macbooks that never had a hardshell case but still get loose when half open., and also there are benefits too having a case that does not ruin the aesthetics design of the laptop imo.

Then just take it off before packing my MBP into a nice cozy Tom Bihn sleeve.
Hello, I wonder do you think the whole don't use a case because of the hinge part can be applied to flip phones ? I wonder if cases could be a reason some person have hinges issues on them
I dropped my macbook and had to make a very expensive repair. It happens. The risk of it being dropped (for example you accidentally knock the plug and it falls on ceramic tiles) is much greater than the risk of having hinge issues. It is all about relative risk. Pity they stopped those magnetic AC connections.
Ok. Just removed the hard shell and the keyboard cover from my MacBook. The hinges really suffer when the hard shell is installed. I’ve never noticed that until I saw your video. I will use the keyboard cover only with the lid opened and search for a thin protective film for the mac. Thank you.

I think he was talking about leaving it in while closing but yeah ur right
What are your thoughts on screen protectors? I usually get marks from the keyboard on the display and the oleophobic coatings have worn off slightly from cleaning it. I would like to use aa screen protector but worry about display issues due to tight space tolerance.
I use hard cases on my MBPs since 2012 and NEVER had ANY problem. On the contrary, they kept all the MBPs new and without marks... Just buy a quality one and be happy and safe. And this is not a sponsored comment...
Getting my first macbook air, are there cases that work well without messing up the hinge?
This video is so weird. Did he perform any actual stress tests or wear tests or is he just trying to shill sponsored products?
I don't use any thing to protect mine. I just use it. I'm sure my Macbook Pro will get scratches, dings and wear on it over time but that just adds to the character!
Good point ! Do the cases have a soft material to line the outeri inner rim of the cases so they don't scratch or scuff the sides of the laptop
Thanks for the detailed video Dion! It is nice to see that while all the content creators through their videos tell people "what to buy", you on the other hand are telling "what not to buy". You do really care for your viewers. Nice to see that.
That is very kind of you to say, thank you! I’m glad my video could help :)
zip it up when you're done
6:23 wait, you cant use a hard shell case because of the weight but a giant webcam (which the macbook already comes equipped with) is ok to use? 🤔
I don't think you'll be keeping the camera on the computer the whole time as you would with a case lol
You might have a defective hinge. I have a hard shell case since 2012, never took it off and still works, opens and closes like new.
I have a MacBook Air M1 2020 model. Can I use a keyboard cover while using the laptop, but remove it when closing the lid? I want to prevent dust from getting inside the keyboard and speakers when using the laptop.
How can I charge my macbook air 15' M3? I can charge it closed If i don't use it?
I don’t know but I feel like I’m more worried about scratches and things falling on the top of my MacBook rather than the hinge stress overtime? Is a hard case that much heavier to cause significant issues?
Thanks, what about screen protector for macbook?
This was going to be my next question. DionMedia what do you think?
screen protector is basically the same, but it weighs much less than a shell case for example, so I left it out
Thank you.@@DionMedia
I guess I was asking more along the lines if the screen protector is gonna break the screen or something?@@DionMedia
@@juanromano5765I have my screen protector for more than 2 years. No problems whatsoever. I know I can take it off anytime to change it to the new one but the fact that its installation is VERY hard I don’t take it off lol it still looks good though so there’s even no reason to change
have used keyboard covers for years without issue, same for screen protector ... over 10 years now. agree that web cover could be a problem
I’ve had a shock protection case on my 2016 MacBook Pro and no issues with my display hinge. And had a keyboard cover on it both since I bought it back in 2016. And no issues.
5 years using hard shell case, no problems with keeping any angle
Yeah this video is dumb.
Hinge strain a case cover adds is negligible, especially at normal viewing angles?
What’s your take on external triscreens for MacBook Air? Can it damage the laptop?
I've been using various keyboard covers on my MacBook and have had no issues with it affecting the screen. Maybe it was an issue with previous versions, but my M1 16 inch MacBook has had a keyboard cover on it 100% of the time for over two years.
Good to hear. This video describes a risk, not a certainty
I think a separate webcam for something like MacBook is the stupidest thing you can make.
I like a soft shell case. Thanks for the tech explanations. You have saved me from buying covers for my Macbook Air M3. Looking to buy a stand now. Nexstand K1 is looking good. Roost V3 also looks good. Any tips from you on this?
Yes. The good alternative is the INCASE Edge Hardshell Case
I used a keyboard cover on my last mac because my fingernails rubbed the letters off the one before that, lol- I'll take the cover off the new one before closing, thanks for the tip.
I bought a hardshell as I am an absolute clutz and also have two kiddos. I panicked and removed it due to this video, but after looking at apples site it shows they also sponsor hardshell cases for sale with them directly. If Apple is endorsing cases is it safe to say that it shouldn't cause to much in terms of damage?
How about the screen protectors?
I can understand a screen protector on a phone but why would you need one on a laptop? When it's in motion, the screen will be closed and protected by the body, no?
There’s privacy screen protectors
It can damage the lamination of the display by using screen protectors.
@@ivand297 yeah that's what happened to my last MacBook 😢, after peeling it off, the screen got soooo many scratches
@@aliciamartin02 Those are not scratches. those are delamination. as much as I want to protect my macbooks screen, I can't risk it for putting a screen protector. I even took off the hard case. because that can deform or damaged the macbook as well.
I have a MacBook Pro from 2013 still with a hard shell and the hinge is still fine. To say after 1 or 2 years the hinge might get totally loose due to a hard case sounds insane, lol. Unless the hinges are made of jello nowadays.
I've had those cases. Small rocks and dust gets inside between the case and the macbook and scratches the body. Better to use it and put it in a sleeve when you finish using it. Buy a good sleeve and you are set.
What is the brand of the hard shell cover for MacBook Air ?
Can I add a screen guard for macbook air m2 display, does it cause any damage to it?
I'm using keyboard cover when I use my macbook, when I close the lid, I remove the cover and keep it inside my tomtoc sleeve
I just bought a Mac air 15 inch and destroyed the frame bus I don't want to use a protection case how much will cost me a frame ?
Is there any way to protect macbook from scratches? Maybe full-size vinyl sticker for lid, body bottom and corners? Any experience?
I've considered this myself... unfortunately I have seen people saying that this may leave permanent adhesive damage especially if it is left on for a long period of time like months or years.. not worth it in my opinion. I think a sleeve is the best option for protection paired with handling it very gently and being cognizant of usage.
so should i put a screen protector or not?
I am also using keyboard cover and have no problem with removing them once I need to take my macbook somewhere or closing the screen before I go sleep, its not any problem
the case thing sounds kinda meh, I am still going to use one nonetheless. I just purchased a brand new M3 MBP and it gives me a sense of security having he case on. I know drops and scratches can be protected from other ways but the case is more practical than buying the hardshell sleeve in my opinion
what do i get for an m2 mac air midnight? it smudges easily and gets a bit of the paint worn off at the ports
I never used a case for my MBA other than a regular laptop bag together with other belongings. I'm always using an exclusive bin just for my laptop during the airport TSA security screening process to avoid scratches. Thats it. My MBA M1 still looks as good as new.
Hello. It is not recommended to use a screen protector for the MacBook Air?
As someone who got a MacBook with a hard case and keyboard cover on it used, the case protects the feet from coming off at most, and the cover… makes the keys very sticky
thank you But if the heavy weight of the hats shell case problems, why is it sold on Apple's website? Are they better or are they the same?
MacBook hard cases have never gave me a problem.
good to hear, it is not a certainty, but a worrying option
Hello there, thanks these advices. Funny I was using all of these things in my MBA and after watching your video I remove them. Just one question, what do you think about using anti dust plugs?
same here, I removed it all except the dust plugs..curios to know if that has any disadvantages..
hi dion! is it safe to put screen protector file on macbook?
Thanks for the great video, very eye opening!
Do you recommend anything to protect palmrest area? I have a particularly sweaty hands and I already ended up corroding one MacBook. I am considering sticking a heat activated vinyl wrap in that area (same as one using in protecting car interiors).
Any thoughts?
Wonderful video, totally makes sense to not to use such products. Well I don’t own the MacBook, but still helpful to me. I will share to those who own MacBooks
any advice on using a screen protector on your Mac?
the hinge argument is such a weak argument, because the M1/M2/M3 macbook air/pro hinges can be tightened with a screwdriver.
Hi there! Can you update an hard sleeve for MacBook Pro 14 (M4-2024)
Can I apply keyboard stickers on my macbook air m1 😕
The newer hardshell cases are lighter than the old ones i assume like the one shown on the video., they also improved the design of the bottom piece not to hit the screen when closed. The hinge issue (for me) is more of a wear and tear thing because there are also macbooks that never had a hardshell case but still get loose when half open., and also there are benefits too having a case that does not ruin the aesthetics design of the laptop imo.
thanks for the feedback
@@DionMediahow about the screen protector for the mac book will it damage it
Can you let me know what brand you recommend for the newer one
@@ahmedaldafari2120 I've had a temper glass on my 2019 MacBook Pro 5 years and never damaged it. upgraded to M2 Max 16in in jan 2024 and the glass protector keep it looking brand new!! I dont use a keyboard cover but I clean my keys with a microfiber before I close it and leave the microfiber that is sized specifically for the keyboard on it to keep oil from touching the screen
I have a light hard case that has very thin hinges. Is this bad still?
I have had this MacBook for over 2 years and nothing except the top hard cover
I'm assuming the keyboard cover is ok as long as you remember to take it off before closing
Thanks so much. I was using a hard shell and keyboard cover for months. Just took them off. No damage.
I am a MacBook user who uses a hard shell case!
I have been watching your video and now I understood that when you put a hard shell case on a MacBook, it will DAMAGE the display of the MacBook over time like after 1 or 2 years later, it will end up with the display not being open!
Now, I don't use the hard shell case anymore!
I would like to say HUGE big thanks to you because of this life-saver video, you have explained really well about the use of a hard shell case
on a MacBook! 👍👍👍
I'm so glad my video could help! Thank you very much 😃👍
Good video. I've always used a keyboard cover, wiping off the key stains on the screen as needed. But I see your point. I might keep the cover in my desk at my office, where my quickly eaten lunch often flies out of control and little bits of lead fly off my mechanical pencils, among other airborne debris.
Thank you.
i've been using that hardshell case for over a year now. love it, but the only downside is that the zipper pull tab on one of them ripped off
Can we use screen guard to protect the screen?
Brotha Could you please tell me should I use screen protector for my MacBook m3 pro? I mean does it really help to protect screen? Please lmk
Would using a screen protector for a Mac be bad or what would the negatives be
We can use the keyboard protector and then remove it after using Mac that's so simple😅
Yeah, I was also thinking the same but what about screen protector
@@dayanidhisharma7066 I use a magnetic privacy screen on my Mac that I take off before closing. The screen conveniently came with a little protective folder to store the screen in when not in use. I think this is a good way to maintain privacy while not being forced to constantly keep it on (i.e., if it was an adhesive screen cover).
Thank you for the video as I was going to be getting a case for my new mac. I guess I'll go with d-brand for a cover instead as I do not want to scratch it. I will look at the case I get but after your video I think I will just return it and get a d-brand sticker and a screen protector. I would love to get an anti glare screen protector but do not know what one as of yet.
What about screen protectors should we use it or not ??
No, those are worse. They can break the screen unironically, when you close the lid the screen won't be fully closed and can be damaged. would suggest just get a lightweight case
Hey @DionMedia : what about screen protector on macbook pro m1 display?
Was just close to buying a hardshell case myself after I just bought my first MacBook a few days ago. I guess my mentality was that working a computer repair shop for over a year now I see all of these nasty dents on otherwise nice-looking computers and I didn't want to have those. But now see that it would only cause worse issues, and having AppleCare+ it's nice I didn't go for it, this only kept me further from them, so thank you.
Thanks for the feedback!
just get one .. ive had one for years .. its fine
