I would never recommend 8GB of RAM, not even for casual users. It will bottle neck at some point. And for the „Pro“ lineup a base model with 8 GB is just outrageous, especially at that price.

M1 air refurbished through apple with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD is $1099 which I was considering but I ended up going with open box good condition base M1 Air Gold from Best Buy for $605. It's in perfect condition and I'm only using this for taxes, typing long emails, Figma in browser, making invitations for parties and light stuff I don't want to use my iPad on and it's been amazing. I use my company issued laptop 16" M2 Max with 64GB memory for engineering work and that thing is way too overpowered and heavy for what I do in my personal life. Great content!

I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad news, but… I have an M1 Air 5 iPad. It’s plagued with issues, especially after the most recent 17.4.1 update, in my case; Google: M1 iPad / MacBook not charging after 17.4.1. Presently, my device no longer charges without being restarted. I understand, this being Apple’s first foray into designing their own in-house chip, which also has an unpatchable design flaw, which will eventually be exploited, but it’s faulty and every subsequent patch appears to come with more issues. My advise, avoid the M1, if at all possible, no matter how tempting…

But anyway - it has nothing to do with M1 chip.

Personally, before watching this video, I purchased a refurbished 15 inch base model M2 Air from Apple with only 6 battery cycles for $1019 about 2 wks ago. I only use my notebook for simple browing, RUclips, reading, etc. Essentially the lightest use case possible for most people and I wanted a larger screen for viewing which was why I didn't opt for the cheaper m1 Air or the 13 inch m2. I think for people like me, this is a perfect choice! The battery life, display size and brightness, and speakers are beyond great for regular usage

I started watching the first videos of this channel with great joy and it was a very nice balance of Tech and comedy. Now it's mostly reviews of Apple products and many of them really unnecessary. I get the fact that videos of Apple products get more views but most of them are not interesting to me. I'm posting this comment more like a feedback to Jimmy and not as a typical negative comment.

    • @JimmyTriesWorld
      @JimmyTriesWorld  7 месяцев назад +6

Hey! I 100% appreciate the feedback from longer term viewers. It’s true that my content has shifted a certain way and I feel that way myself when I scroll through my list of videos. Video idea wise I try to focus on topics I find interesting as well as tried and true tested videos that perform well. Just a few videos ago I did a desk setup video in a completely different style that I loved doing even if it performed awful! But that also does include items I use in my day to day life. But humor on the channel has dropped and that’s probably due to a some stressful things going on in my own life the last couple of years but something I’ve been trying to add back in where I can. For example I started trying portable pc handhelds and they’ve been super interesting for me and hoping to push out content on that sort of thing and more experimental stuff this year. This comment definitely echoed a lot of sentiment I’ve been feeling myself and I appreciate someone also pointed it out!

I have the Macbook Pro M3 14'' with 18GB of RAM. I dont know why, but even with a heavy load, i get like 8GB of use in RAM and 1GB in SWAP for some reason. The idea of SWAP is correct, and your explanation as well. However, for some godamn reason, MacOS uses SWAP constantly without any reason whatsoever.

Good overview and great suggestions. I edit 60-300 megapixel images using Lightroom and Photoshop. Often layered using HDR, focus stacking, or stitched for panoramas. I currently use a 14” M1 Max with 64GB memory and 4G internal disk with a 4K display. It is a very capable most 60 megapixel tasks, but bogs down for very large images and some tasks, such as AI denoising, and bokeh blurring. I often check memory pressure and it is an extreme rarity I have memory pressure. I do, however, often see all 10 CPUs close to 100% utilization, even on simple things like import, export, and building of previews. Graphics is almost never more than 50%. Part of the problem is clearly Adobe’s implementation and tuning to utilize the resources available, but I can’t change their code. I am likely to upgrade or add a Mac Mini or Studio when the M4 arrives.

My works include: Researching, script writing, voice over, Video editing, etc (basically content creation). The videos might be 20~30 mins in length, sometimes even more (worst case scenario) and there would be a lot of graphics work (After effects).
Will the 16 Inch M3 Pro Macbook Pro (18/512) be enough for me or should I go with the 16 Inch M3 Max Macbook Pro (36/1TB)?

Because casual gaming is important to me, I also have Lenovo's Legion Slim 7i (8th gen), which games really well but simply doesn't compare to the Mac, even if use-case and spec-wise it's "superior". Still, it's currently in the shop getting repaired, for the third time--hence the quotation marks around the word superior.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever thought of the possibility of Apple's marketing strategy surrounding the release of the m1 series chip and how much better they knew it was for mobile computing than Intel macs were?
Remember, when everyone reacted to the performance improvements, the BATTERY LIFE? It was almost orders of magnitude better than the generation previous to the m1.
Apple had been designing their own chips for years by the m1 release. It was also absolutely obvious that x86/64 based processors performance gains were closely correlated to power consumption.
Why didn't Apple choose to release their arm based cpu's sooner? They were already miles ahead of their counterparts. They could've released an aX bionic variant for at least the MacBook Air line surely earlier than they did.
The possible answer to this question is that Rosetta wasn't ready yet, but I might beg to differ. When Rosetta was released, everyone also was raving at the seamlessness of functionality and that why hadn't Microsoft been able to do so earlier? There were very few bugs I've heard of. It was a software release unlike any other.
Consider this however. What if Rosetta was basically polished years before release. Knowing where x86/64 was heading (performance/power consumption) why did they choose to stay for so long and then hard pivot? Obviously the m1 was a generational leap. But it's release also meant that their previous generations of MacBook would be rendered all but obsolete with the m1. And resale prices would plummet, leading to Intel macs being sold dirt cheap. This leads to poor people who couldn't otherwise afford a MacBook without the Intel versions being so heavily discounted. But now $2000+ laptops are available for pennies on the dollar (slight exaggeration). Now these people who never could afford an iPhone or MacBook now have entered the infamous "walled garden".
Those lower level consumers who have a laptop that they normally wouldn't be able to afford now get a taste of this ecosystem. A truly Marvelous ecosystem. But an addictive ecosystem. Apple now had access to a consumer segment they were unable to access. These new lower earning consumers now get to experience what all us techies refer to as the Apple experience.
Depending on interpretation, this is either brilliant or predatory. Either way, if you really think about it, I'm not sure I agree with it either way. How many of us have cautioned our loved ones who are in the market for a car, and depending on their finances, steer them away from a Mercedes because of the cost of maintenance and/or repair? No matter the great deal on this expensive car, we try to reason with them to at least evaluate this choice very carefully as to not end up with a car r that they can't afford to get fixed. They get this Intel MacBook as their first Apple product, but their Android phone doesn't work as nicely with it. So they get an iPhone. But their smartwatch someone bought for them for Christmas now won't sync with the phone and laptop. So they buy an apple watch. In a short amount of time, that Intel MacBook will be rendered obsolete, and they will have no choice but to buy an ARM based MacBook if they want as seamless a transition as possible. Remember, there isn't a (what I would consider truly budget) option at the entry level. Cheapest new iPhone is what, 400 bucks? The cheapest android is a fraction of the price. Yes, it isn't as good, but at least that entry level android phone will still work with whatever peripherals I currently own. No compromises as far as functionality. There is absolutely zero equivalent option for a super price restricted consumer to purchase an equivalent cheap iPhone versus the option to purchase a truly budget/entry level android. This is troubling for me to see.
Makes me wonder. I hope I'm being cynical. But as I wrote this comment, and question everything I said, even play devil's advocate, I come to the same concerning conclusion.

This is so helpful and let me tell you a tip. Engineering background who did a project with apple. Even if you want to do music and video editing, 8 GB of ram is enough. I bought a 24 inch midnight blue M3 MacBook Air, for $900 including taxes. I did mot get apple care you do mot meed it. I got a hard shell, a tempered glass screen protector and a keyboard protector.
Here is a tip if after a while you see that your keyboard is not as good as it used to be get one an air blowing device, and it would remove any dust.
Apple wants you to think you have to spend $200 for ram upgrade but to make it worse they force you to get 256 gigs of SSD .
They’re trying to charge you 45% more remember I paid $900 out the door and they want to charge $400 for here’s what I did I spent $80 on Amazon prime and I got a one terabyte external SSD drive when it’s Amazon prime you could get it for about $100 .
People say you can’t do video editing with only 8 GB of ram so what did people do four years ago not making any music videos or movies?😂

Hi Jimmy--hope all is well. I imagine i'm not alone in struggling with decisions on MacBooks, as they each have advantanges and disadvantages. Years ago, i had a 16in MacBook Pro; they then introduced the 15in model and i've had it for a decade. I thought my next Pro would be the 16in, as i like the bigger screens. On Labor Day, i got a very good deal on the 14in MacBook Pro (with 18gb RAM, 500GB memory). I'm still getting used to the smaller size of the 14in even though its much brighter than my old 15in Pro. With that said, i could see myself liking the size of the 15in MacBook Air, but, given the fact that i prefer the brightness of the Pro's screens, i think i would not be happy with the less-bright screen of the 15in Air even as it is larger and ligther than the 14in. So...i'll try to challenge myself to getting used to the new 14In's size and enjoy the portability and brightness of it for traveling, etc. I wish they still made the 15in Pro, but that's life. Appreciate the solid analysis of this. Best!

I just ordered a refurbished MacBook Pro M3 with 18 ram and 512 storage versus 15 inch MacBook Air for the same price which I’m returning. 🎉. My M1 MacBook Pro suddenly died on me. The extended warranty had just run out and they wanted $700 ship it off to a facility to check it out. I have also had trouble with the M1 iPad Pro dying on me. I’ve had to replace it twice with the extended warranty. So I don’t know if anyone else has had trouble with M1 or I just got unlucky to have lemons. I really wanna just unscrew my M1 and see if I can put a new battery in myself or find someone that will do it for me. I really wanna know why that computer died.
The main reason that I am switching to the pro is because as I get older colors seem to dim and fade on me and it’s hard to see them clearly. So I’m hoping that the pro will be clear and sharper for me. What do you think about that? it’s a big decision and a lot of money to drop especially since I just bought that M1 two years ago.

I'm quite confused between the 13" M2 air with 16gigs or the M3 Pro mbp. ~2200 for the pro and ~1500 for the air where I live. I am someone who works on AI and trains models. I have been getting by just fine with a 10th gen Intel i7 H series processor with 16gigs of ram, though it has started to get slow and be a bottleneck. I usually have a lot of tabs open and multiple editors, some that are connected to VMs. I am pushing my current machine to 100% ram and cpu very often. I would soon be joining a tech focused masters.
Although I can spend the 2200, it is no doubt going to be a huge dent on my pocket. Even the air is quite expensive, but I am fine with that much. I'd probably be using this machine for a good part of the next 4-5 years. Does it make sense to save on the cash and go with the Air, I am willing to manage the occasional hiccups. Or does the pro seem like that much better an investment being about 50% more expensive? TYIA.
