    Just a small correction as someone pointed out - the passive cooling in the Air wouldn't affect battery life negatively vs the Pro, as it would result in less wattage. Total gaff on my part and I should have caught this before posting, sorry guys! (It was a long week 😅)

      i'd have mentioned the fact that overheating the CPU area to >100 ºC regularly is not going to be good for circuit board and electrical component longevity (you may have said it but I didn't catch it). A bag of ice wrapped in a towel is something live streamers used to do with intel i7/i9 MBPs that can't cool so engage the annoying (“thermal”) throttling. You can already buy a massive externally applied metal heat sink for the M3 MBA, the manufacturer must have got advanced warning on the thermal issues…

Wasted hundreds of hours with senior Apple engineers because they refuse to replace it but twice replaced the lid/display to no effect.

I prefer promotion on my iPhone but on a notebook it doesn't really matter. I opted for the 16GB/1TB version as I don't wanna deal with external hard drives too much to juggle my files around and intend to use the notebook for several years without thinking about the storage.

    Excellent video in comparing the M3 Pro and M3 Air. This actually clarified something for me. The M3 Pro could easily have been called the M3 Air+. In terms of overall performance they’re very much the same and it’s a matter of trade-offs. If you go for the Pro you get a bit bigger display with added ports and active rather than passive cooling (the Air is fanless).

    I am a Graphic Designer and a Photographer from India who works on multiple layers in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom Classic, Figma and Canva, also I am planning to start learning video editing using Adobe's Premier Pro or Davinci Resolve and motion graphics using Adobe After Effects.
    Currently, I am using an AUS ROG Zephyrus G14 from 2020 with 16 gigs of memory and 1 TB of storage (this is the base model btw which has a Ryzen 5 4600 HS CPU and a Nvidia GTX 1650 ti GPU).
    I usually have multiple apps running and this is how it might look on average:
    1. Photoshop
    2. Illustrator
    3. Figma (along with Photoshop on rare scenarios)
    4. Lightroom Classic (sometimes along with Photoshop)
    3. A browser (2 different ones like Brave and Firefox sometimes),
    4. Apple Music,
    5. Windows file explorer (4 to 5 tabs),
    6. A communication app (like Slack or Teams) and
    7. Notion.
    So now can you tell me whether a person like me can get away with a decently specced Macbook Air (like a 15-inch model with 24 gigs of memory and 1 TB of storage) instead of a much more powerful Macbook Pro?

    Thoughts on a spec’d up air vs the pro with M3 pro for video editing? Based on your video I’d probably be fine with an air as I rarely use lots of effects but the pro is on sale $200 off right now so the price gap is even smaller. I don’t really care about export times, much more concerned with timeline performance.

    • @KyleErickson
      @KyleErickson  Месяц назад +3

      timeline performance is about the same tbh. I honestly don't even notice that much difference between the Air and my old M2 Max Mac Studio - these chips are just so good. I think the one thing I'll say is that if you have a bunch of stuff running at once, say you're editing video with photo editing apps, or another semi-powerful apps running at the same time, that's likely where you'll notice things can feel sluggish. If it's just focused work in a single app, pretty hard to tell IMO

  • @ChromeJob
    @ChromeJob Месяц назад

    I’ve been evaluating a 15” M2 Air from Costco, and despite teh $1000 price, it’s disappointing with 8Gb/256Gb. I’m seeing Memory Pressure go yellow from time to time just running a couple of Office apps, Notes, Terminal, less than a dozen Chrome and/or Safari tabs. So I think the “true entry level” models are 16Gb/256Gb MBA and 18Gb/512Gb M3 Pro MBP.
    The 15” MBA’s screen comes in handy for Sidecar use where you want to extent another Mac’s screen to it. The 15” MBA’s speakers are definitely nicer, closer in sound quality to the 14” MBP (based on my store test btween the two, playing Toto’s “Africa” on each. I’ve pumped my 15” MBA from 40% to 95% charge in pretty quick order using an Anker 100W charger and Apple’s Magsafe 3 cable. It could help that I often set it on a Targus CoolPad Traveler base that allows air circulation underneath.
    Where I think the deciding line isn’t in “what you do” but what you may do that’s CPU intense. For someone who only edits vacation videos once or twice a year, you can afford to start rendering and go walk the dog while the MBA heats up, throttles itself back a bit, and takes longer. For that user who’s staring at the screen muttering, “C’mon, hurry UP, c’mon,” the MBA is the wrong machine to buy. Duh.
    Personally, since the 8Gb RAM is souring me on the “base” 15”, I’m looking at Certified Refurb models with more RAM. Alas, a lot of them generally come with more SSD space, which I don’t need, having built an Acasis + Western Digital SN770 drive per your recommendation. The crunch is when a suitably equipped 15” MBA comes within US$50 of a suitably equiped 14” MBP … that nicer display, better performance under duress, and higher screen resolution (for clarity) is a strong temptation. When memory goes yellow that is not an issue at all. It should not affect performance per se. If you leave it for a while macOS will manage that and many times I see yellow, 10 mins later it is back to green, as Apple swaps resources between RAM, swap and compression. People should not stare at the RAM monitor as it just gives the wrong impression. I have 8GB MB Pro 13 M1 (3.5 years-old) and can be using 12GB of RAM (swap/compressed/hardwired) and no difference in performance. Your usage should not be a problem as you are not using all 12 webpages at the same time so Apple will after a while will deduce some site are inactive and then compress or swap them out.

      @@andyH_England Thanks for that. Perhaps I should pay less attention to the Activity Monitor Memory tab (green/yellow/red), adn more to the cmd line memory_pressure command's result under "System-wide memory free percentage."
      I get it down to 50% or a bit less opening a ton of apps, then log out, back in and it's cleared up to 79%. (The results shown in top seem misleading because, I presume, macOS is consuming free RAM and using it in ways that top doesn't reflect.)

      What kind of job you do with it? I have a m2 16gb 512 refurb. According to benchmarks is more powerful than a mbp i9 from 2019... and you could edit videos on it on the go if you need it to. Battery life is about 15 hours depending on use etc. You could get a 14 pro base and it would be way more powerful than your current one. I chose the air 15 because of portability and screen size. I don't produce any videos and spreadsheets are better on a 15 inch. Same as typing for long sessions. I don't consider having a 120hz screen a deal breaker or the best speakers. The air screen is excellent compared to any 60hz and the speakers are the best I've heard comparing it to any windows laptop. So yeah. If you can get the student discount and get a refurb, you could get one like mine for 1295 plus sales tax

      Getting the M2 air was a thought choice. I saved $ compared to getting a pro that I would underutilize, too much power, and if I wanted the 16 because screen size, portability would've been sacrificed. But, if you do heavy work and you plan to work outside and at home, and you need all that power on the go, get the pro. But if you plan to get something powerful enough on the go, portable and capable but really no slouch get the air with 16, and if you want something really powerful at home, get a mac studio and that thing is more powerful than those mac pros that 4 years ago where 5k and above. It’s a bit strange that you say that the Pro doesn’t have to work as hard when pushed. It’s the other way around isn’t it?
    The passive cooling on the Air means that it cools by running less Watts through the processor. Those are Watts that don’t have to come from the battery. So, the more you push it, the more it throttles, the ‘less’ battery capacity it uses. Whereas the Pro keeps using the full Watts the processor can handle at all times + it has the fan using more Watts when pushing it hard, and the brighter, faster, dual-layer screen. So, it’s just a bit weird that apparently your tests showed the opposite if this.

    • @KyleErickson
      @KyleErickson  Месяц назад +1

      Yup, you're 100% correct about the active/passive cooling! Total mistake on my part, I'll add a comment on the video. As to the other comment about having to work harder, what I'd meant to say is the M3 Pro doesn't stress things out as much with the same tasks, and it just seems to tax the battery less in those instances. Thanks for pointing that out, totally missed it.

      @ChromeJob Месяц назад +2

The cheapest XPS 14, Galaxy Book4 Pro, Surface Laptop 6 are all smaller and cost £400 more! If you can live with 8GB/256GB (I have for 40 years) then that is where the MB Air line shines. FYI if you want a cheaper XPS 14 or Galaxy Book4 Pro you cannot buy 8GB/256GB so £1600 base price. But even then, I think that the base M3 MacBook Pro is a better deal than the M3 Air laptops. I think they are nicer and better and they have nice features that don't come with the air. Having a fan is a good thing and having more ports is good. And you have much better speakers, much better headphone jack that can power high impedance headphones, and obviously you get slightly better performance. Plus, the battery is much larger, and you get much faster charging.
    A base M3 MacBook Pro is basically just as powerful as a TOP SPEC 16" M1 PRO. And in some ways it's actually much better. It has MUCH better single core speed. Like almost 33% faster single core speed. If you get a base m3 MacBook Pro, you basically have an M1 PRO top spec

    An important thing to note is that the MBA and base M3 MBP have only Thunderbolt 3 ports if you care about that. You don't get Thunderbolt 4 unless you go to the M3 Pro MBP. In terms of value if you upgrade all three to 16GB RAM, the base M3 Pro MBP 11c/14c with a better cpu, better display, three TB4 ports, and 2GB extra RAM seems like the best value (15" MBA w/16GB RAM = $1699, base M3 MBP w/16GB RAM = $1799, base M3 Pro MBP w/18GB RAM = $1999). The only thing that may be able to touch the base M3 Pro MBP in terms of value would be the 13" MBA with 16GB/512GB for $1499 if you can deal with the smaller 13.6" display and 2 TB3 ports.
