    To cut to the chase, YES, it's the best laptop in the world, but after 6 months NO I'm still not completely happy. It has 5 BIG ISSUES. Also some tips & tricks on graphics, usage, security, handling and more.
    I'll give you the details, but first I will tell you the story about the MacBook Pro in the Burmese jungle.
    If you enjoyed this video and learned some new perspective, it really helps to support the channel if you would like the video and subscribe. Thank you!

    This video has really helped me in deciding which specs to purchase in the 2020 16” MacBook Pro. Had a smile on my face the entire video and laughed a few times too.
    Thank you.

    I also ordered the new 16” MBP the day it was announced. However, unlike you I purchased it fully loaded, and I am so glad I did. The crazy cost of the 8TB of SSD storage has more that paid for itself in convenience and time savings. I travel a lot for work and I never need to fumble around for a hard drive or thumb drive and adapters and cables. I open it up and my project files are ready to go...LOVE IT! I haven’t had any of the intermittent crashes, which means its a QC issue with yours, which sucks...sorry! I agree about the tough bar. I use it for volume and that’s it.

      @@lewisalexander Hey Lewis. Happy I read your comment. You are one of the few I saw doing pro audio work. I'm using Cubase, still want to upgrade from my 2015 15" but saw some reviews (and tested in the store myself) about this annoying "sound click/crack" issue when playing audio on different platforms/DAWs (even in Logic). Of course all of those issues occurred while using the internal audio hardware so, almost every time you would play and pause the audio you would hear a loud click from the speaker. This can be annoying in a 4-5k pro device. Also the fan spin when connected to external screens was an issue for most. Indeed when recording, doing final edits, heavier edits you would use an external sound card but, if you are on the go and just want to connect your mini keyboard and start an idea it can be frustrating, just thinking of it.
      I was curious if you encountered any of those issues in your line of work? I just can't find anymore reviews on this sound issues, maybe you can share a bit of your overall experience. Only 3 weeks left till the Nov Apple event, hopefully a new 2020 16" without any issues ?!

    Appreciate the honest hands on review! I also loved my very reliable 2012 Retina while roaming the world on business. Recently I’m finding that video editing on the 12.9” iPad Pro much smoother and faster than on my 2017 MacBook Pro thanks to the A12s chip. Apple’s transition to ARM laptops will be a game changer for MacBook Pro.

    • @ctoLarssonTECH
      @ctoLarssonTECH  3 года назад +5

      Yes that's a very true insight. I realized just a few days ago that the the only device that can even play back the new Canon/Sony H.265 10 bit 4:2:2 codecs smoothly, without skipping frames in chunks with CPU maxed out, is the iPad Pro, while a $20,000 Mac Pro can't. Isn't that mind bending?!

      @@ctoLarssonTECH it's baffling, yes, but not surprising. Intel obviously has been defeated by it's own success (or pseudo monopoly) before, implementing the next gen video codecs always took them long, especially for encoders. The x86 platform hasn't been very innovative, unbelievably little innovation over 12 years or so. Apple with their chips however have always been video centric, at least they'd like to market themselves that way. Here is a rare proof that they actually put their money where their mouths are at.
      I'm actually quite excited about their upcoming ARM based laptops. I don't see them delivering lackluster performance, I think they'll stick to their promise of longer battery life at higher performance... BUT, I don't think you'll get your wish of higher graphics performance in general, I don't think they could beat the current nvidia solutions, let alone the upcoming next gen ones of Nvidia and AMD, not for general purpose or compute, but definitely in the video de/encoding department, I have no doubt!

      @@ctoLarssonTECH - could be the advantage and efficiencies of SoC on the "mobile" Apple processors ... I would love an option to double up the RAM, after purchase - or force the lower end (power efficient) card to run - even if it is at reduced resolution (not 4K?) though I am sure the lower end card can run at least one external 4K + the internal at normal resolution.
      Intel has some advantages, though - depending on the work needed. I do like the dual video options, yet you are correct CTO Larsson - Apple could and should do a better job with the implementation.
      Maybe the M1/M2 based MacBook/MacBook Pros resolve this all?

    Great video, very entertaining. I've had the same spec MBP 16 but with 16GB RAM since Jan 2020. Upgraded from previous model which was rock solid but hated the keyboard. This one seems to be running hot all the time. I tried to migrate from a iMac 27" by buying a 32" LG monitor and Apple Magic Keyboard and Mouse. What a mistake! Constant issues even when plugged in. Eventually both USB-C ports on right side stopped working. Apple replaced the logic board, touch ID board, 2 x I/O boards. I stopped using it with the LG monitor because I thought the controller was the issue. It wasn't the MBP still locks up for reasons I don't understand. May suddenly restart itself, the fan makes a lot of noise. Apple support suggested SMC and NVRAM resets before I do anything else. A little more stable but the graphics are glitchy still. This is the most beautiful and most powerful MBP ever made but I can't help feeling it is still a prototype and the physical constraints of the machine struggle to accommodate the powerful components inside. Someone told me that it has bugs and will eventually be reliable as these are ironed out. I didn't spend $3,200 on a work laptop to be a tester! Still love it but like Larsson, am not confident in it. It can crash at any time and that's unacceptable for business. For the first time, I am more confident in my Win10 HP work laptop.

    I have this same machine and I have also had random reboots and WiFi issues which seems like it's less rock-solid compared to the models from 5 years ago. However, some of that could be intel's fault, the new M1 chips could be the way to address almost all of these concerns (except touch bar), it seems even the "slowest" M1 can get the job done in a 16" if it supports 2 externals and has 4 ports.

    The 5600M does what you wish for #1 and #2 (well, it doesn't permit the iGPU + externals but it improves in this area)...it's way more powerful, way more efficient, and plays much better with displays without crazy fan noise when doing next to nothing. The 5600M kexts also seem to be quite mature. Unfortunately, it bumps the price even more. In the US the 5600M is an $800 upgrade on a computer with a base price of nearly $2,500...give it 32 gigs of RAM, 1 TB SSD, and the i9 and it's a $4,000 system in the US. I really wish Apple had figured out a way to make the 5600M the sole GPU on the 16-inch MacBook Pro because while I am not sure if HBM is the future or not, it works extremely well with the 16-inch MacBook Pro and works way better in terms of operating within the thermal constraints presented by a compact case design as such.

    Any device as sophisticated as a laptop is going to have a percentage of failures and lemons. It really sucks if you end up getting a bad machine, but not necessarily indicative of overall quality if the numbers are really low. Anecdotal evidence of build quality based on a single machine isn't a great source of data. My heavily used 2014 mbpro just died, but I'm sure most power users weren't so lucky to get 6 quality years out of theirs. If the 16" issues are widespread, that's a different story. I'm not sure what the failure rates are of this machine, but I've not seen any problematic numbers reported and it seems like the keyboard issues have been mostly fixed. I'm more interested in how Apple responds to any new issues and how effective they are at fixing them.
    Very good video, none the less.

    Having the same problem with overheating when an external monitor connected to the Macbook Pro 16 actually I did find some videos about that on YT and stumbled upon your video when doing research … In fact Apple does not have a “Pro” laptop at the moment, as all designers do work on external monitors. It also has problems with SSD or other peripherals connected to the laptop. It all means that the temperature of the laptop rises up to 70c or higher. I have experienced some unexpected shutdowns and freezing of the computer. And when running hot the computer does not shut down properly. I have to unplug it from the monitor to cool off and then it shut down normally. Thi is crap. We should all unite and demand our money back. The computer has a serious design flaw and I am personally losing time every day. I am also worried that the computer will have issues as it is always running hot!

The power supply cannot feed enough power for the CPU and GPU, so it cycles the battery shortening its life span, its designed like this.... its made to need a battery replacement every two years....

  • @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll
    @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll 3 года назад

    On the GPU critique, fair enough, but be mindful that a beefier GPU in terms of TDP, would require a larger AC charger, and Apple is already at the limit of USB-c charging capacity, so apple would hve to go back to a power only plug connector which would be a defeat of the logic of the machine. Also, it is thermal management, with that thin chassis you cannot put beefier GPUs or it will throttle massively and take the CPU down throttle with it. for better GPU you either do external GPU (which will take care of your external monitor fan problem) or Apple makes the machine even thicker.

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 3 года назад

      There is a beefier GPU option...it's the 5600M. It's vastly faster than the 5500M, it consumes wayyyyy less energy, and it causes wayyyy less CPU throttling than the other two GPUs.

    Your charger will probably again think being a 60W if you only use the cable for 60W again ;)
    It‘s the cable...

      Lol yeah it has some identity crisis. I actually tried switching the cable, but the issues were in the bricks. It has a firmware and maybe some memory too, but no user accessible reset unlike the Mac where you can reset the SMC

      CTO LARSSON - TECH hehe :) but it‘s not what i meant. The cable has a peak wattage it can provide, no matter the power supply. Unfortunately, finding the right cable is quite difficult because it‘s hardly ever actively promoted. The cable that was provided by Apple for the 16“ does not do well data, but it‘s there for charging and should support the necessary wattage. For other high quality cables, go with original branding from the brand itself (no distributors in between because of fake products). The way i solved this: active Thunderbolt3 cable 2m from CalDigit for charging at the dock at home, power brick and original cable in the backpack. HTH and thanks for your video!

    My 2017 is now utterly f****d and I am back to using my 2015. When that dies I'll be buying a thinkbook and installing Linux. I am so disgusted with Apple under Tim Cook I wont buy another one until that tit is gone and they mke a MBP as good as they could in 2012 with magsafe. Honestly ever decision Apple has made in the last 5 years has been the wrong one.

    I have only one reason why I use it - a development tool for iPhone. Otherwise it is a garbage.

    Biggest waist of money I’ve ever spent. The thing can’t even scrub 4K videos on 1/8 preview. Sounds like it’s going to blow up. What a joke.
