SOLVED! MacBook Pro 16" + External Monitor = High Temperatures and Loud Fans. Here is the FIX!

  • The internet is full of complaints about high temperatures and loud fans when the MacBook Pro 16-inch is attached to an external monitor. In this video I have tested a number of cable and monitor combinations to identify what works, and what to avoid.
    These are the cables that I tested and which worked with well at a 60Hz refresh rate in "clam shell" mode:
    USB-C to DisplayPort... amzn.to/3hZQYQN
    Thunderbolt 3... amzn.to/2BC7plC

      I had the same configuration and the same issue. I spent a lot of cash on different configurations My current config is 2 LG ultrafine displays, which will draw 18W-20W idling at 60Hz, but at 30Hz refresh rate the dGPU draws about 4-6W. I’ve only had it this way for a few days, before that I had an eGPU,
      anyway, it’s ok when idling or light use, but it heats up when streaming a game from a PC via steam remote play, and the power draw shot up while running a Windows VM,
      From what I’ve read, and I’ve read a lot and spent hours with Apple Tech support! , it seems to be an issue with the 5300M and 5500M dGPU chips on 2019 MBP 16” laptops.

    I've been using the same MacBook Pro in a vertical clamshell mode with the apple logo straight up. That means the heat goes down where the hinge is located, and there is not much space between the clamshell stand and the desk. This causes some strange issues with RUclips videos and other problems. But when the MacBook Pro is in an upside-down clamshell mode, which means the hinge part goes up and also the heat goes up as well. I have no problem with the latter clamshell mode.

    I have the same problem with a 2012 macbook pro. It's because with a monitor plugged in, it will automatically try and refresh both the built-in and external displays, even if the monitor's screen is sleeping. To avoid detection of the monitor without having to remove the hdmi cable, you can turn off the monitor's power supply on a switched power strip. And when using the monitor as a mirror, an alternative to the clamshell mode that keeps access to the keyboard and has better cooling, is to dim down the laptop's display entirely.

      I have zero interest for two displays, but I keep mine open because of: 1) The fingerprint sensor 2) Mic doesn't work too well when the lid is closed. I suppose I'd manage without the fingerprint sensor and use a headset in meetings.

    • @RomanWagner
      @RomanWagner 2 года назад +7

      @@kke I finally solved the problem. The fan of the Macbook Pro 2019 drove me crazy. I work daily with my 4k display and use Microsoft Teams for hours a day. I often had 5400 rpm and more all day long. I've tried so many. Of course, an app for regulating the fans has the disadvantage that the processor gets too hot and thus reduces the speed. In the end, the system hangs constantly. When my working day was over and I still want to cut my holiday films in Final Cut Pro in the evening or want to edit pictures in the photo app, the fan was still loud. At some point I had gone through the entire range of options: different display cables, different adapters, docking stations, etc. Then I briefly decided to buy a "worse" screen so that I didn't have the 4K problem. But then the problems with Microsoft Teams continued. I ended up selling the device and getting an M1 Pro. Since then absolute peace at home. An expensive but finally effective solution.

    I have an LG 34 inch ultra wide and MacBook Pro 16 inch that I use in clamshell mode. I was getting horrible fan noise while doing everyday tasks that shouldn't have caused the fans to spin on my Mac. The thing that fixed it for me was my adapter. The old one I used supported a max refresh rate of 50Hz through HDMI. Once I bought a new one that supported 60Hz and changed my display settings to use 60Hz, the noise stopped. The adapter also allows me to plug in my power cable, so there is only 1 USB C port being used on my Mac. Hope this helps.

      Unfortunately, your recommendations didn't solve anything for me. The PC blows up with insane heat, when I plug to my PC monitor, my wide screen tv and is even producing heat when I use sidecar connected with an IPAD!

      @@sandman3881 I wanted to confirm a few things. The cable that I used was USB-C to DisplayPort, not USB-C to HDMI. The reason that worked for me is that my monitor only supports 60Hz refresh rate over DisplayPort. 60Hz or greater is one of the two things that are important. The second is running in "clam shell", meaning that the MacBook Pro display is closed and you are using only the external monitor. Can you confirm that your refresh rate was 60Hz or greater, and that the MacBook Pro display was closed?
      On a side note... I have never seen anything close to 100C, even while doing all of the various tests in the video. You may have other issues that need to be checked out.

    Using the Clamshell Mode helps a little bit, but don't expect some major changes. I'm using a USB-C to Displayport cable on a 1440p monitor@144Hz with my 2019 Macbook Pro 16". The problem is, that the Radeon spins up as soon as you plug an external monitor to your Macbook. Using Clamshell mode brought the power consumption of the Radeon from 18,4W to 17,5W.
    When no monitor is connected, the Radeon graphics card is chilling at 0,5W. That is the main reason for all that heat in the MBP 16" and a serious design failure from Apple. Theres just no way around when you want to use an external monitor, you have to live with the heat and the noices...

I remember back in the day when I brought it to the office in dec 2019 and plugged it in to the office monitor, my workmates were laughing : dude, what is that noise , isn't that a new laptop? HAHA

      You'll run into similar issues. Heat, for one. The last iMac I bought was the 2017 5K one. They haven't changed a thing with thermals in the last 3 years and something tells me the new design will run everything up to 100C or 105C to minimize noise. The T2 security chip is a disaster and has given people all sorts of issues like kernel panics. You won't be able to swap out the SSD when it fails, since T2 chip requires the original SSD and drives present in order to boot.
      I get that some people want Apple to take care of everything when something goes wrong. They'll buy AppleCare. I won't judge, because some people would gladly trade money for less time wasted and frustration. The problem is that the T2 chip really shouldn't exist in its current implementation. It's causing stability issues. It's complicating a lot of things that should not be complicated.

    Good tech review..
    I'm looking for a solution to a screen glitching issue when connecting my 16" MBP to a 1080p Monitor or TV, via an external dongle. (It's a 2015 Model 27" LG, that works fine otherwise). Apple support suggested I go into safe mode (Shift+Power) and this works fine. but the MBP does not see external USB drives (via dongle, which I suppose is good in Safe Mode). Replied to Apple support that I can't run the MPB in Safe forever. So...

If you haven't already tried a different cable, that may be worth a shot.

Unlike yours my MacBook Pro has 16GB of RAM (indifferent for testing purposes) but only has 4GB of VRAM instead of the 8GB in yours. What I noticed is that when the screen is open and the external monitor (BenQ PD3200 U 4K@60Hz USBC-DisplayPort cable) is connected the GPU ram (RADEON) is used up to about 80% and the computer tends to throttle, when the display is closed the VRAM usage of the RADEON drops to about 20%. Click to select it as the current output. If your monitor isn't listed, it probably doesn't have speakers.

    Can you provide the specific LG model number for the 34" UltraWide you are using? Are you getting the best resolution the monitor can offer? Any issues waking up from sleep, etc.? Is this a monitor you would recommend for the MacBook Pro 16" or do you have any other recommendations? You clearly have researched this very well and thoroughly so I thought I would ask if you do not mind.
    Thank you very much in advance, kind regards,
    Santiago

    • @VirtualTechMeetup
      @VirtualTechMeetup  4 года назад

      It is an LG 34UC87C, and all testing was at the full 3440x1440. Interestingly I was also having the issue with the system being unable to sleep and crashing. However after switching from the dongle/dock to the USB-C to DisplayPort cable, that issue went away as well. I had read that others suspected that their dock was the root cause of the issue, which would seem to have been true for me as well.
      As far as recommendations go, I must point out this is an older model. However other 3440x1440 models from LG should be as good or better. Whether any monitor is the right one for you, depends on your needs. I am usually writing code and building data analytics solutions. I don't play games. The quality of text display and lots of screen real estate is most important to me. Super high refresh rates and response speed are secondary. It may be the opposite for you. I would actually prefer something like the LG 5K UltraFine. For text display it is incredible. However I need it to be wider and curved (and ideally anti-glare rather than glossy).

    • @huntingaction1476
      @huntingaction1476 4 года назад

      @@VirtualTechMeetup Thank you very much indeed once more. After a lot of research, I have decided to go for the LG 5K UltraFine. Ideally, I would have liked more screen real estate, but in the end I was not convinced by the 5K2K resolution nor by the 34" layout of the 34WK95U-W which was the finalist. But it was a close call, my conclusion is that that 34WK95U-W should work decently with the MBP 2019 16".
      As a separate note, I had bought a MBP 2019 16" with exactly the same specs as yours, very recently. I am returning it for one with the 5600M GPU, it does seem that one is behaving much better perhaps it has even solved the issues with the external monitor. But it is a disappointment to say the least the quality of this Apple flagship product. You buy this sort of computer so you do not have to make compromises and it has been the total opposite.

    • @VirtualTechMeetup
      @VirtualTechMeetup  4 года назад

      I researched monitors a lot lately, and also thought that perhaps the 5K2K would be a reasonable choice, but nothing seemed like a sufficient upgrade. Nagging at me in the back of my mind is that I know that I really want the text quality of the LG 5K UltraFine (I used one on a project for about 6 months after the first came out). It is surprising that there is nothing between that and the Apple 6K XDR.

    What a shame you did not use istat to show the wattage use on the radeon card, which ultimately is the issue we have. I use 2x 1440p screens (1 mac cinema display, 1 dell) I've tried thunderbolt, displayport, hdmi, all @60 hz, as that's the only hz supported on these (only 1 display at a time). I tried a 4k monitor @30hz as well same results.
    Radeon card pins at 18watt usage, instead of 4-8w which would be the normal , doesn't matter if lid is open or closed.
    If I start the mac with shift down (safe mode) it runs at 9watt no matter what.
    Running just laptop display 4watt with gpu enabled.
    Setting dell screen to 1080p, lid closed - now the "expected" behavior happens .. around 8 watt usage on GPU, even though its still a bit high.
