    Thanks for the tip bro. For those of you who are here because of the loud fans with external monitor issue: I tried this mod yesterday and it won't fix it, but it does keep the temps slightly lower so the fans kick in a bit later. But they still kick in under light loads. The issue with the external monitor is caused by the GPU jumping from 4w to 18w power draw as soon as you plug in an external monitor. This has something to do with the GPU ramping up it's memory usage as soon as there is a mismatch of refresh rates / resolutions between displays. No way around it other than work in clamshell mode with one or two external monitors that have the same resolution and refresh rate. If using Logic Pro, I've found I have to use Turbo Boost Switcher Pro to disable turbo boost, or have fans running full pelt. For some reason Logic Pro pushes the CPU to maximum clock speed even when nothing is happening. I made a video about the GPU issue here: ruclips.net/video/6mS4AAdft_M/видео.html
    If you are going to try this mod, be aware that the back plate is a bit fiddly to get off, not like the old macbook pro's. It has two clips that need to be pulled free, then another two hinge clips that means you have to pull the back plate horizontally, not up.. Check some videos before attempting! Also, if you plan to work with the laptop on your lap at all, don't do this mod, it does get pretty hot underneath! Although that said, it's mainly the external monitor that makes it hot, and when it's on your lap you won't be using one!

      Macbook pro 16in's thermal design forces the fan to kick in the moment it reaches total power withdrawl of more than 30w.
      There is nothing you can do about this. Obviously a thermal design flaw but any laptops with dgpu connected to external monitor will activate its dgpu not igpu

    • @BillySalisbury

      @@notefromone2925 Ahh, I'd not heard that before. I don't mind the fans kicking in a bit, but with an external monitor they end up ramping up to a very noisy level, plus the temps often sit above 80c which just doesn't feel like it's going to be good for the lifespan of the laptop. I actually just removed the thermal pads as I think I'm going to sell this laptop and get an M1 machine, and the pads were creating a slight bulge in the backplate. It's pretty tough to get them just touching the plate without pressing it! Out of interest, when your gaming, are your fans maxed out and your temps up in the 80-100c range? And are you using the laptop in clamshell mode?

    Nice video, why dont you put any thermal pads on the heat sink? I have read online that by doing this you can essentially turn the back plate into a heat sink to help dissipate more heat. Your video says not to though so I am a little confused. Any feedback would be super helpful :)

    • @Dream-Academy
      @Dream-Academy Год назад

      you want the heatsinks on the CPU and GPU to be taken out the exhaust holes by the fans and not make the base plate hotter even more which may cause battery or other issues. Better thermal paste like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on the CPU and GPU would be good while you are in there but I don't have a guide for that. Apple use cheap white paste that has low thermal transfer rate and now is maybe 4 years old now.

    What a cool idea. Great, creative tip! My only concern is clearance and the potential damage that could occur from pressure when the aluminum chassis flexes. Would you happen to know if the thermal pads are capable of absorbing or displacing the flex pressure from the aluminum chassis? I’ve been fantasizing about polishing the top of the heat pipe and using a thin but large sheet of copper that mates up to all parts the produce heat with maybe a tiny bit of thermal paste and the theory is that the heat will conduct away on the copper sheet into the cast of the MacBook and conduct the heat to the heat pipe where at least some of the heat is transferred into the vapor and liquid in the heat pipe to be expelled into the air. Perhaps even purchase some aftermarket cellphone heat pipes that are paper thin but carry the heat away a short distance possibly to the case or just enough into the air inside the Mac case. Your idea is simple but the idea of using a copper sheet seems like it’ll work great.

    When using the laptop by itself (without any external display), do you run into stuttering issues with the IGPU. I'm not sure if it's an issue with mac os big sur and how it is optimized with the Intel UHD 630 but at times, when using it, the typing lags a bit and there seems to be a bit of stuttering.

      No I do not experience such lag. Perhaps you should consider doing a wipe

      @@notefromone2925 yeah sucks because it’s a pain to get everything back on but seems like the only solution l. I did a pram reset, smc reset, nothing did it

    I bought a custom refrigerated cooling pad from China just to cool my 16 inch MacBook. Cost me $180 bucks with import tax included!
