Fan Noise / Overheating with Macbook Pro 16" Explained

    After watching this video, Apple's Executive Customer Care told me they had shown the video to the engineering team, and it was STILL "expected behaviour". Only conclusion - Apple made a massive error in the design, there is no fix, admitting that would involve a massive recall and losing millions of dollars, so their solution is to just deny it and move on. So disgusted with this company.
    ----
    Are you having issues with using an external display with your Macbook pro 16"? You're not the only one. I've made this video to try and explain what I've learned so far. Apologies for repeating myself in the video, but hopefully it makes things clear!
    I'm using a Macbook Pro 16" 2019 (Core i9 2.3ghz, 16gb RAM, AMD Radeon 5500M 4GB)
    Here's a summary:
    Using an external display with the Macbook Pro 16" causes the macbook to become really hot (69 to 75 degrees), and the fans to spin up to 3000rpm and become noisy.
    The reason for this is that when you use an external display as well as the laptop display, the power drawn by the DGPU (Dedicated GPU) jumps from 4w to 17w.
    Use the laptop display alone (using the DGPU), it only draws around 4w.
    If you run a 1080p external display in clamshell mode, again the DGPU only draws 4w
    If you run 2 x 1080p external monitors in clamshell mode, the DGPU draws 5w
    Open the laptop and it jumps to 19w
    So where is this all this extra wattage draw coming from? It seems very clear that it shouldn't be needed to run the two displays, so it suggests a problem. A driver problem perhaps? Come on Apple, please acknowledge that this isn't "expected behaviour" and try to find a solution.
    There are plenty of other people with the same issue, and much discussion on the subject at these forum threads:
    forums.macrumo...
    forums.macrumo...
    discussions.ap...
    P.S. at 7:44 I say the fans will "turn off"... obviously I know the fans are always running, I just mean they will drop back to their default, almost silent speed. Just pre-empting the trolling... :)

    UPDATE:
    Soooo... I finally updated to Monterey, and yes, the low power mode does keep the GPU wattage down to manageable levels, which means I can finally use my laptop with the lid open + an external monitor.... BUT... now my previous set-up of using 2 x 1080p monitors, both 60hz, in clamshell mode, no longer works! As I demonstrate in the video, I was getting it down to 4w using the 2 monitors in clamshell mode, but now, unless I enable low power mode, it jumps to 14w. So now I'm forced to use low power mode at all times. That sucks, as sometimes I want that extra power. This was nearly a great new fix, but it's broken my setup which I'm now used to using. Anyone have any idea why it might be doing this?
    I'd been waiting for the 14" M1 pro macbook to come out to finally ditch this piece of shit machine, but now it's finally arrived, this laptop has dropped in value to about £1100 on ebay, and I paid £2600 for it. After ebay fees and vat I'll be lucky if I end up with £850 for it... I just can't bring myself to give apple another £1000+ to finally get a working machine.

      Thanks a lot for your work and meticulous explanations!
      Have you tried using only one external monitor in this setup under Monterey? What is the power draw/heating/fan noise in this situation? I've been reluctant to move from Catalina on my MBP 16 2019, since I expect incompatibility issues with numerous audio plugins in Ableton. But I just bought a nice QuadHD monitor and want to use it without the damn noise and heat. Do I have a chance with Monterey, what do you think? Or it's better to buy keyboard and trackpad to use the laptop in clamshell mode?

    • @BillySalisbury
      @BillySalisbury  2 года назад +1

      @@njee1979 So... it's a bit of a double edged sword I'm afraid! Low Power Mode in Monterey does indeed reign in the wattage consumption of the GPU (as well as the overclocked speed of the CPU). So it will definitely help reduce fan noise when using the laptop open with a second monitor. However, Monterey has also broken whatever happy accident allowed me to use my laptop in clamshell mode with 2 external monitors and only 5w of gpu draw. Now in clamshell mode I'm forced to use LPM otherwise I get 14w of draw. So for me it's actually not really provided a "fix". But for people who couldn't get their external monitors to "work" even in clamshell mode then this is a big improvement. Why don't you do a full time machine backup and then try it out?

      I spent 4200 EUR for this piece of garbage and bc I use it open with an external monitor on Catalina, I have been suffering with that crazy noise and overheating for years! Also, I spent tons of time trying to figure out a fix and based on all the articles I've came across I got to the same conclusion - this problem cannot be solved, because it a huge design mistake! Unbelievable. I would love to migrate to almost silent M1 but I can't as I occasionally need x86 virtualization, so I'm basically stuck with this crap. I'm used to working with a laptop keyboard and display + 1 external monitor, so I don't want to use the clamshell mode. I'm glad you mentioned, that upgrade to Monterey with LP mode enabled could bring some relief. I hope the LP mode is able to keep up with the 4K/60Hz monitor. This would be like the best Christmas present ever because that crazy noise (and overheating) is killing me..

  • @michaelpasquale3334
    @michaelpasquale3334 3 года назад +6

    I’ve been researching this myself. The key issue that istats won’t show you is GPU memory clock speed. This is what is causing the GPU to draw the higher power. This issue isn’t specific to apple either, I have a MacBook Pro 16inch and a razer laptop and it happens on both. The reason for the higher wattage is a mixture of things. It comes down to which GPU you are using, and how many pixels per second the GPU is being required to calculate. The pixels per second has to do with total resolution, refresh rate, and then more obscure timing parameters such as front porch, back porch, blanking intervals, sync width, etc. The values I mentioned are in the EDID of the monitor(s) the gpu is running and all amount to how many pixels per second the GPU must calculate. They call this resultant value the “pixel clock” or “pixel rate” depending where you look. GPU’s all have certain thresholds to pixel clocks and when that threshold gets exceeded the GPU’s memory clock speed will step up to a higher level (this is not linear, it quite literally goes from ~190Mhz to 1400Mhz) and thus a higher power level. This is what you are seeing. The more powerful the GPU, the higher the pixel clock it can run before it jumps up to a higher power requirement. Google “EDID Pixel clock speed and gpu memory clock” or something along those lines. Blur busters, monitorstests, and Reddit are great places to learn about this.

    • @michaelpasquale3334
      @michaelpasquale3334 3 года назад +1

      So really, you either increase or resolution, or more refresh rate, or more of any of those other obscure timing parameters defined in a monitor’s edid. If any of those on their own or a combination of them are increased and the pixel clock increases past a specific value defined by the GPU’s architecture, the memory clock shoots up to the next steady state level and so does the power consumption.

    • @michaelpasquale3334
      @michaelpasquale3334 3 года назад +1

      So essentially it’s an issue of the entire industry not being transparant, not Apple. The GPU manufactures make it really hard to figure out the supported pixel rates of their chipsets, and the monitor industry doesn’t disclose the timing information in the EDID unless you use programs like “CRU” for windows or SwitchResX for Mac to find out.

    • @BillySalisbury
      @BillySalisbury  3 года назад +1

      @@michaelpasquale3334 Hey Bro, that's really useful info, thanks. Do you have a Macbook Pro 16" experiencing the same problem? I do get that it's a hardware issue due to the power consumption of the gpu jumping up dramatically, but I guess my complaint is that when Apple were designing and testing the components for this model they should have spotted that hooking up an external monitor caused this behaviour and made it pretty much unusable. A couple of people on here have mentioned they were able to get refunds by demonstrating how hard the CPU was throttled when hooked up to 2 x 4k monitors. I can't get a refund as bought through an external reseller, but am close to just selling it, losing £800 (!!), and buying something else. But then the question is: do they even make a Macbook that just works as you would expect it to anymore?
      Just to add to that, even using one 1080p monitor causes the power jump if the laptop is open, causing the heat to shoot up etc. My 2012 macbook could handle 2 monitors easily so you'd think the latest most high end machine should be able to do that without even breaking a sweat...

    I have a 2019 16” fully loaded paired with 2x LG Ultrafine 4K monitors (from Apple). Exact same issue. Clamshell stays pretty calm but open it up and it’s like an airplane.
    I’ve also had extreme slow down while plugged into my monitors and using Zoom and Slack at the same time. The fix there was to disable hardware acceleration in Slack. CPU usage dropped from 90% to 15%. Seems to only happen on the 16” with externals.
    Also have had numerous issues with what can only be described as purple artifacts that randomly appear on the screen, especially in browser windows. Typically happens after waking the device from sleep. Reboot is the only way to fix it.
    Out of all the Macs I’ve owned since 1996, this is BY FAR the most buggy one (and most expensive). Shame on Apple for denying the issue. It’s all over the web if you look.

    From experience and discussions with Apple techs concerning my 13", 15" and 2X 16" MBP's all with this similar problem, this is ultimately a mix bag of CPU and GPU heat/power issues. For the GPU, the driver is the problem and shouldn't necessitate a "recall" per say, but a decent amount of work to fiddle a new driver GPU driver setup; it hasn't been updated since Catalina on the 15" BTW. The second culprit is also the Intel CPU situation which in time made Apple go its own way and built a new architecture for their products. Bottom line, everything draws too much for the size of the chassis and dumps this on us; the average or not so Apple user. Sucks. Great video, love the details, cheers.

      @@bloodlustuponme Apple have a worldwide warranty. You can buy a computer in the USA and have it repaired under warranty anywhere else. If you bought it directly from Apple, you should have no problem. It is pretty straight forward. Apple need to make the machine work the way they advertise it, or refund it. If you plug 2 x display (or even just 1 in my experience) and the computer's performance goes to hell, it is unexpected behaviour.. They did not warn you that you could not use the machine in that configuration before purchase, in fact exactly the opposite.. Their website says you can drive 2 x 6K XDR displays from a 16" MacBook Pro, and also that its upper ambient temperature limit is 35 degrees C. If the machine misbehaves with those parameters (my machine was failing when the temperature went over 29 degrees in the room), then they either need to make it work, and show you that it can work, or refund it. It seems very clear to me.. If they complain that you should have brought it back sooner, my answer was that the whole world was in lockdown for the initial many months of my ownership of the machine, and also that at the time it was not clear to me that this was a design flaw.. I did try to solve the issue myself (freshly installed OS, cooling the machine with 2 large 240v fans, turning TurboBoost off etc. However It is not my job to troubleshoot or diagnose a design flaw. I was on my way down a stupid rabbit hole that was not my fault... I was quite annoyed with Apple at that stage. My machine was everything except storage specced to the max (only thing mine was limited on was 'only' 2TB of SSD. Everything else top spec). My computer cost me £3700, plus 2 x £1000+ LG Ultrafine displays (that I also bought directly from Apple). That is a LOT of money for a machine that would never work the way they said it should. It wasted a lot of my time and money through no fault of mine. As I have said elsewhere, I love Apple, they have provided me with extraordinarily cool equipment as well as a lifelong career in IT consulting and programming. However the laptops are being pushed further than they can reliably work (I went through a total of 5 x 15" Touch Bar MacBook Pros. All of them had failing keyboards, or failing displays (big blue blotches), or were bought new within a few weeks of a new product announcement. Apple were very good about swapping machines out for me. After the 15" keyboard debacle, I switched to an iMac Pro. It was great. Had it for a couple of years before Apple brought out the 16" MacBook Pro. I was seduced by the power and portability, which were second to none. However when I tried to use my laptop as a desktop (with external displays) all hell broke loose. Also as I have said elsewhere, I have now moved back to an iMac 2020 for my desk, and it is flawless. For portable, I am using a 2018 Touch Bar 13" with no expectation that it will do my actual work. It is just for portability and consulting work I do. If I am out and I need power, I remote into my iMac. I am in the UK.

      @@bloodlustuponme Good luck with it. Update us :) Be firm. At the end of the day, the machine needs to perform as they say on their website. If it performs at a lower level with an easily reproducible configuration, they either need to make it perform normally, or repair it. They can keep replacing / repairing til the cows come home, the machine is not going to work properly with external displays connected, so they must either fix it so it does, or refund it. BTW, this isn't an Apple exclusive problem.. Dell has the same issue with the XPS (see here: www.ultrabookreview.com/14875-fix-throttling-xps-15/), and I am sure that any manufacturer who uses the same cpus will have the same problem, unless they make a gigantic case and fan for it (Alienware? - Nope - They have the problem as well - www.dell.com/community/Alienware/Area-51m-R1-GPU-throttling/td-p/7422671/page/1 ). Hey people. I know this might not be a true fix, but I bought a Razer Core X Chroma, and added an AMD RX580 I still had in a tower PC, and the MBP now works really silently. fans never go more than 2000-2500 rpm, except when I'm doing huge CPU processing like video encoding or loading a very very demanding project file in Cubase / Logic (like crazily demanding) and even that.. the only thing that makes my fans ramping to the 4000-4500 RPM range is video encoding.
    With an Gpu enclosure, the wattage of the DGPU never go more than 2,5 W (and it goes to 4 watt if you open the MacBook lid)
    I know it's another investment , but trust me, it really works. And it can be only 500 $ worth of investment. And if you work with external monitors, it means you work mostly in one place (like your home) so you don't have to move the E Gpu enclosure every day to another place. And if you want to use your MacBook Pro outside your home, simply use only the internal graphic card..

    Great video! Completely having the same problem and worse yet, if I run any sort of fan speed management application, after approx 5 minutes Activity Monitor reveals the Mac has hijacked the system with a “kernel task” that is over 1000% CPU tying up the entire computer making the computer basically unusable until I disable the app - even though the app is sensor based and keeping the required temperatures in normal safe territory! What’s up Apple?? Please fix this. I’m running a professional recording studio and this 16 inch MacBook Pro has more than enough power for the 500+ track logic session I just created for a film and temperatures are running in the 80° range but yet the fans are at max at 5600 RPM. The variety of fan control apps Indicate the fans only really need to be around 2600 RPM to sustain the temperatures that are safe under full load with that big of a session. I spent a lot of time making a very quiet control room. Why are you preventing me from being able to use a fan control software that manages fan speed based on what the computer actually needs rather than just ramping them to full speed when I have the computer doing any type of work?

    • @HQcreative
      @HQcreative 3 года назад +1

      Yeah I could confirm that the Kernel_task shit appears after minutes connecting the external display. I read somewhere that this shit is to bring the system into a throttling status to prevent crashing. So it acts as Apple’s desire. @@dzuanazzi Hey David. So even in clamshell mode it draws 18w? How many monitors do you have attached? As I understand it, it's to do with a mismatch in the refresh rates/resolutions of the monitors. That's why having the laptop open always triggers it, as no external monitor has exactly the same resolution/refresh rate as the laptop screen. But if your two externals are identical it shouldn't jump to 18w. I have two 1080p monitors, both 60hz refresh rate. So even though they're different brands, it still works. But it's possible that 4k or 5k monitors might affect it differently. Worth doing some testing though!

    Hi, idk what kind of wizardry is going on with my computer, but yesterday I switched the graphics to dedicated only because some stuff where a bit laggy with the integrated card, and since then my computer is pulling around 18w for the whole system and 7w for the radeon at idle, while connected to two 4K displays (one is the dell U2720Q connected through usb-c with PD, and the other is a U2718Q connected with usb-c to DP cable) - temperature is 52°C. NOTE: turbo boost enable!
    When I watch a 720p video on youtube it goes to 25w for the whole system (around 11w for gpu) and goes to around 57°C to 64°C and the fans are stable at 1700rpm.
    I tried to switch back to dynamic switching but it didn't affect the results. I'll have to see if after I reboot the machine if it will keep being like this, but I'm pretty sure this was not the behaviour before, it use to be really noisy after just watching a few youtube videos. Now even watching a 4K 60 fps video on youtube the fans are not ramping up, that's insane... it goes to around 19w for the gpu and 40w for the whole system and it stays stable at 72°C and 1700rpm, you can't even ear it...
    I'm under the impression that we've been all pointing fingers at the dedicated gpu when in fact it's the integrated gpu that is messing up the whole thing

    • @BillySalisbury
      @BillySalisbury  3 года назад

      Hmm, that’s interesting... it would be hard to blame the integrated graphics for anything involving external monitors though, as I’m pretty sure the dedicated gpu will always be used when using external monitors. I’ve seen quite a few people more savvy than me claim that as fact. So I guess someone else has changed... are you in clamshell mode or using the laptop screen as well as the external monitors?

    • @felipeschulz2485
      @felipeschulz2485 3 года назад

      @@BillySalisbury You're right, it's not related to the integrated graphics. I realise that since I started using iStat I'm able to monitor behaviour changes in the wattage usage when using different apps, turns out some things are really not well optimised and it makes huge spikes in wattage, I'm avoiding to use those if I want peace and quiet. But somehow my computer at idle connected to two 4K displays is pulling only 6w for the gpu and 10w for the other components, which is great tbh. But on normal usage even simple web css animations can trigger really high spikes and that's what causes the computer to heat up - at least for me. (i've tried many browsers and they all behave the same). When I realise my computer is pulling a lot of power I try to diagnose what's causing it, and then evaluate if I need to be running that or not... many times I'm just keeping something open for convenience, if don't really need it I close the program or the tab for that moment and the computer cools down (it's a big pain in the ass to have to do that).
      It's like a big v8 engine that consumes a lot of gas, it uses all the available power to go through any simple task, which is totally overkill and it results in these crappy temperatures/behaviour.
      Right now I'm trying to sell this laptop and buy a mac mini m1 and a macbook pro m1, for the same money I can get two computers that behave way better than this crap mbp 16. I'm really upset because I invested a lot to have a professional machine and all I end up with is an average beautiful computer and tons of headaches because of the freaking noise.
