I went back to Intel and… I liked it?

- Ok hear me out…. I went back to my 2019 15 inch Core i9 MacBook Pro for a little while after becoming weary of the large size of the new 16 inch Apple Silicon MacBook Pro. The 15 inch with butterfly keyboard was not a popular design for a number of obvious reasons, but today I’d like to revisit one key way in which the design was very very successful!

Would you buy a 15 inch MacBook Air? I think some people are missing the point of the video, which is that the *form factor* of the old 15" has a lot of potential as a new category for an ultralight MacBook Air that can now match (and exceed) this level of performance. I'm not saying Intel is better, this particular design is better, or that I would replace the new thicker design
I would, yep. I love my M1 Air. I would love a bigger screen though
Absolutely. The Pro series is overkill for my needs, but the Air screen is too small. I live in an apartment so don't have the space for a full desktop monitor but with lockdowns and work from home requirements, a 13" or even 14" is too small to work on all day every day. 15" is that sweet spot for longer use and portability and with the ability to use my 11" ipad pro as a second screen it is an ideal work from home set up for those in small living spaces..
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
I can’t recall how many times I’ve had the exact same conversation with my friends. I really like the bigger screen and I don’t need the power for my personal laptop. Unfortunately, the only option for me right now is the base model 16”
I WANT a 16” Air
Absolutely
I don’t think Apple will ever produce a 15 inch Air but I am all in if they do.😎
This has been my wish. A bigger Apple silicon MacBook Air
Sure, apart from the bezels, the touch bar, the butterfly keyboard, the awful thermals, not to mention the performance gap, and the price, it was a great laptop!
That’s a lot of things to exclude xD
Bezels really aren’t that important on a laptop especially on most MacBooks since they weren’t that bad
LOL 😆
Not bezels… it’s a full width notch.
You described a full laptop
I switched from my old 2018 15” MBP to the new 16” M1 Max. I’m been trying to sell the old one and nobody wants it. Already down to $970 for it. No interest at all. That laptop was noisy, slow, buggy, meh.. the M1 MacBook Air destroys it in basically every way.
The 2018s have been specially hard hit for sure! Weirdly the 2016/17s haven't had too much impact even though they're the least powerful and have the worst butterfly keyboards!
I had the same device, had two logic board problems in 2 years. It's a oven cooking the internals until they fail. They worth $0 in my opinion and should be left in the storage and only used I case extreme need. They will die eventually like the Xbox 360 did.
@ Max Tech - That’s cos the 2018 had thermal issues and the flawed butterfly keyboard.
I'd rather have a 2015 than any 2016-2018.
@@movdqa I can't speak to that, but I waited til the 2019 16 inch MBP then pulled the trigger. I have not used it much for work, but due to pandemic, will be taking classes come August 2022 and plan to use it then. Best to all.
I have a 2019 15” for work and would never go back. The heat, noise, lack of battery life (which I’ve also had to replace twice due to bulging battery cells) and less color accurate, smaller screen (plus the nasty keyboard) are leagues different than the new pros. If you travel professionally than sure, maybe that extra half pound and an inch would kill ya but for most desk-focused people those size differences have no practical usability effect. The changes Apple made on the new Pros are focused in the right places, even if it resulted in a bit more size.
Are you gay?
I like the butterfly keyboard beach of the sound of the click and the clack when it works it is wonderful I do have a few broken keys myself but if there were no broken key this would be my favorite... my personal favorite would be the keyboard from the OG MacBook Pro of 2006 and then Powerbooks
Apple silicon refresh would eliminate these drawbacks
Just cuz it isn’t useful for you doesn’t mean others wouldn’t like it. A moderately big laptop that can still be carried around easily and doesn’t need cutting edge performance would slot in really well in the market … lots of people bought 15” mbp’s just for the size
Amen!
mine has the worst battery ever and replacing it is more expensive than purchasing a new one.
I upgraded from the 2015 15" MBP to the 2021 16" MBP and there's basically no difference at all in size. I guess that's the good part of having missed out on the entire butterfly keyboard generation of MBPs. 😆
Same here!!! Before I got the 16” M1 I was worried it would be too big and was pleasantly surprised when they were more or less the exact same dimensions.

For me as an Software engineer in Spain, and also as a owner of the 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro and 16 inch m1 pro MacBook. I have to say it. Battery life is a game changer. I still use both of them because windows in my old 16 inch and I can feel the difference between them. Secondly, once you tried 120 hertz there is no come back to 60 hz. For me it is impossible. I like more the new keyboard. In my opinion, the new ones feels better. I like them more. With the black background it is nicer and easier to type. Also it doesn't get as hot as the old one. The only thing I really miss is the touchbar. I am Touch Bar guy, sorry.
About the size, for my usage it is not very noticeable. My bag is big enough to carry both of them and also my iPad Pro. But I have to agree with you, the new ones feels more chunky and bigger than the old ones. Every time I use the intel MacBook I see it more futuristic than the new one, which it feels something more classic and older, like it was from an earlier generation. I will buy if Apple releases it, the new 15 inch MacBook Air, with that kind of design you are saying, I am a screen real state fan as well!!
By the way, I was waiting for someone from the RUclips community to share a video like you did to share my opinion and see what did they think about the new design. Now I don't feel lonely in this side.
Love your content Luke.
I learnt most of my English by watching your videos!!
I felt that the M1 macbook pros are not even ready for The applications to be able to run such as wrong such as using my DHW and plugins that are still not ready for the M1. I might get the 2019 16" macbook pro with more RAM, Storage, and i9 in the further future.
I agree with you i prefer old design than new was more futuristic the new ones are like old design apple is discounting all the 16 inch means is not selling good
Definitely never going back to 60Hz, and it's not even a new thing, I have a few CRT monitors and they all go way above 60Hz, and it's a struggle to use a 60Hz panel for me anymore when I could easily be using a 100Hz display instead.
I use a 16” from 2019, and my plan is to switch to a strong Apple silicon iMac, while having a light laptop on the side for travel and stuff. A 15” Air would be a dream come true for me as well
is coming

I love the content but this I can’t agree with. I was just on two 3 hour flights with my 16 inch M1 Pro and had absolutely zero issues. It fit on my tray, I was able to do some work and get through a whole movie. Was it a little tight? Sure. Was I able to use an external mouse? No. But it was completely and totally fine and fit without a problem. I just don’t really understand when content creators make the 16 inch to be some sort of cinderblock. Yes it is slightly heavier but no, it will not completely change how it feels in your bag. It still ultimately feels like you have a laptop in your bag.
No way Jose! I won't give up my 16" M1pro chunky boy! nope! I don't need to work on airplanes...I'm good...bye old style Macbook....bring on the chunky boys!
the time it took that 15" to wake up at 01:08 demonstrates one of the many things wrong with the Intel. I do prefer the form factor of the 15" or 16" Intel MBP but damn I don't miss the incredibly poor battery life, the constant feeling of being hot hot hot on your lap, or when you plug in an external monitor and the 5300M & 5500M models start getting hot and spinning up the fans while sitting there idling.
That's the problem with my 2020 XPS!! Its fast as heck .. i9 32gb, nice graphic card. But it Runs hot all the time, boot time is slow and problematic, and it's heavy, and it always dying. Plus win 11 is quirky at times. But l love screen and keyboard. I recently bought a 13 mbp m1 and love it. I do hate the lack of ports but everything else is gold!!

Intel is not the problem…
I have early 2015 mbp 13 on mojave and it wakes from sleep in literally 1 second.
Apple is just slowly sabotaging its own products through software updates to make new products seem “revolutionary”…
@@brunob8827 I don't think that delay there was anything intentional or malicious, I have the same laptop running Monterey and it too wakes from sleep in about a second or two (still slower than Apple silicon though, which is near instant).
@@seshpenguin thats good to hear, but I find it very confusing because some people have no issues with older macs but then on the other side there are ones that bash anything that is intel or last gen…
Luke, I will admit that I thought this video was about getting some views only. After watching it I am glad I saw it. Some valid points have been made.
Good work today sir.
I did prefer the Butterfly keyboard in terms of feel. It was sort-of clicky, it was very low travel, and I don't know why, but I thought it felt REALLY good. But the reliability was definitely a deal-breaker.The new Magic Keyboard is definitely a good compromise between the feel of the Butterfly boards and the reliability of a normal switch.
🤢 those keyboards were trash
I think the keyboard may have bred good but the reliability was the thing that killed it
Yea I'm on the same boat. The keyboard feels really "premium" If you can say that. But the reliability was what killed it, its just a fundamentally flawed designed.
@@seshpenguin I agree, I've just began rocking the butterfly keyboard and I love the feel of it, just the reliability of the keyboard is what is holding it back especially since apple is taking away the repair programs of older Macs with these keyboards
Im completely with you I have an old function row 2017 macbook pro and I love the feel of the butterfly keyboard but yeah im very very lucky I havent had any issues yet
The new 16’ MacBook only weighs about 6 pounds… it’s still very easy to slip into a bag and actually feels solid this time around. Add the beast like performance and an upgrade in every other category and you have a computer that isn’t made for a tray table, because a 15 inch never was. (The air or iPad is better suited. )
Plus you don’t need dongles! For 7 years Apple sacrificed inputs for form-factor and now that they finally listened and made this thing all powerful, you revert to intel based on form factor?
I don't get this whole weight argument. They weigh nothing compared to laptops from 10 years ago, are people really that weak nowadays that a few pounds means they're exhausted in a short amount of time or what?
Speaking of what's new for apple... Personally i think they need to slim down their lineups (pun intended). There are way too many options with different names ect. Keep the new mbp style but do a 12", 14" and 16" and just call them macbook. Get rid of the "air" lineup as the 12" would take its spot anyway. Same with phones. Tbh, if they got rid of all the excess weight (again pun intended) in their lineups and just simplified things plus bring the prices down just a bit to more reasonable levels they'd easily break even or even make profit as their products would be more affordable to more people hence more devices sold. I'd wager people don't upgrade as much as they want to due to everything being confusing about what/which/when/why devices they should get.
TL:DR - Too many choices for average consumer, simplify and bring more people over from Android... win win for Apple.
@@dodo19923 Sedentary society. People need to do more deadlifts. I carry my 2021 16 in my old 2007 MBP 17 bag. It's actually swimming in that backpack. I feel that the 2019 macbook pro is the best keyboard apple has ever made on a laptop. It feels tactile enough and has enough travel for it to feel nice and pleasant to type on. I did try the new M1 Max macbook pro keyboard, though it feels nice, i do not like it as much as the 2019 keyboard. I hate the touch-bar though. I was a interesting concept but not implemented properly.
What do you guys think?
Apple gave us incredible slim notebooks, users as always start whining for thermals, ports…. Then Apple made bigger notebooks with inferior ports compared to versatile Thunderbolt 4, bigger battery and impressive thermals considering the power… and now we whine about the size and we want the slim MacBook Pro again? Please… And yes i typed ultra fast on butterfly keyboard, it was super slim but super clicky… wasn’t perfect but the whining habit are really sad.

Apple is never going to listen to us again after this generation of macbooks is done! We complained for 6 years, they listened and we complained again. Dont cry when they dont listen to us again.
That’s a tight rope you’re walking, bemoaning MacBooks for sacrificing thermals and performance, and then turning around and bemoaning MacBooks for being too chunky- and sacrificing thinness for performance.
wow your Macbook Air 15' prophecy happened!!!!!
My 2017 15 inch MacBook pro feels really good to date. And for my web development workloads, it just runs perfectly. No crazy fan noise. No crazy heat issues. It still looks stellar and I am indifferent about the touch bar.
You don't use i? It's great you can set it up for a lot of stuff when you code!
“I’m going back…to click bait” come on Luke 🥱
After replacing my 2019 intel 16 inch MacBook Pro, which I kept to the side, I returned my 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook. I returned it since, as a university student, I found I didn't have much use for it and didn't use it any differently than the Intel version. To put it another way, I returned it since I wasn’t using it to its full potential.

Funny. May I ask why you tried to replace a perfectly functional and super fast 2019 mac laptop when you really never needed it? Was it the marketing hype ? RUclipsrs overselling it?
@@mrparts Tbh with you, it was great percentage of both. I was under the impression that I needed a slightly larger screen and faster laptop, but I soon realized that I didn't use it any differently than I did before and that I had just wasted $3500 CAD on something I already had. So, if you're thinking about buying one of the new MacBooks, think about whether you really need it and what you're going to use it with and for, because, like me, I didn't use it to its full potential, so it was a waste of money.
@@xfinity319 Exactly, I have had several Macbooks and an old Mac pro (Cheese grater). Providing you can do what you want in reasonable time keep what you have. A 15 Inch MacBook Air would be the ideal laptop for me.
I was considering getting the 16 Inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro purely because of the screen size. I don't care much for the performance of the M1 Pro and Max, M1 level performance is good enough for my needs.
Let's see where Spring/Fall this year takes us, I can afford to wait another year or two.

Totally agree. I would love a 15 inch M1 MacBook air.. A larger screen with similar spec to a Macbook air, not to chunky with good enough performance even if it is not M1Pro/Max level. And of course a more reasonable price then a MacBook pro. On the PC world, one can choose the screen size independent of the performance.
@@jeanjasinczuk7543 there’s one more thing to consider about air’s. The ports are atrocious. The newer pros excel at port selection. So an air 15 or 16 still might not be appealing.
this is the most contradictory video ive ever seen lol. I remember when every one and you too probably were hating on the 15inch mbp because its too thin and not properly cooled and the display could be edge to edge like other laptops had it and now the same one that was so hated is the better one?
My personal view is that the 13" MBP is the perfect size. When I'm at home I'll connect it to my large monitor and when I'm away from home I don't usually spend hours on my laptop so the smaller 13" screen is just perfect. But then I haven't had my hands on one of the 14" models yet!
I had a 15" model when I was at uni and it just didn't work for me from a portability perspective!
I felt the same way! But when I got my hands on the new m1 mbp it didn't feel like that big of a change. It's still a really portable device.
My sister has the 13 M1 MBP, it’s straight up too small. The form factor is fine, but the screen is just way too small. The 14 inch is honestly perfect, with its super slim bezels, gives you way more screen in a similar form factor
I owned 2 butterfly keyboard MacBook (not Air, not Pro) ultralights and had zero keyboard issues over 5 years. Obviously the design has problems, but I kept my laptops clean and I learned to properly TOUCH type (high school typing class) so I never hammered on it like I observe millennials doing.
Try taking notes all day, eventually you won’t be able to touch type fast enough.
@@MultiPcExpertGhost then you do what I do and just plop a mechanical keyboard on the deck and type away
@@CompMeistR Can’t do that in a lecture room full of people
@@MultiPcExpertGhost never stops me
As a programmer idgaf I hammer away on those suckers, and will not stop if it breaks then it was poorly manufactured simple as that.
Keyboard travel is part of the typing experience. And those butterfly keyboards lack any meaningful travel so I found myself hitting the same keys because sometimes they wouldn't be detected by a simple tap, and because there's barely any travel hammering away isn't all that satisfying or possible. I'm glad I never had to daily drive those god awful keyboards.
It is totally fine to keep using and loving the 2019 MacBook Pro, just like keep driving the car you bought 20 years ago. It just makes no sense to choose the 2019 MBP if it is at the same price with the M1 Pro MBP.
Also, it is far too silly to call the 15” design as a MacBook “Air”.
I bought a fully loaded 27" i9 iMac at the end of last year. I'm positive the M1s will be better, but I need the compatibility for the moment and the horsepower is more than sufficient.
I know you know but don’t forget about the ports on new laptops and what you need to bring along going back to the 15”
Eh... I use a 4 port 13inch and I've never had any issues with just using a dongle with charging throughput. You're still only using one port, and I can just leave dongle connected to the charger. At this point in time, I'm just hoping that along with SD cards, cameras will follow suit and simply use a USB-C for transferring photos and video.
Some people absolutely love the return of the SD card, and fair enough, but if you're a light-mid user, the amount of times that port actually gets used is negligible, and a dongle connected to your power cable is fine.
HDMI? Same thing, the dongle works fine and the best thing about it is that those ports are then transferrable to any USB-C device, and if those ports break? Well it's a hell of a lot cheaper and more convenient to replace a dongle than it is to send the entire machine back to Apple for them to overcharge on repairs.
How many time people really are going to be in an airplane in a month and working in an airplane? So that argument is kind a weak to me. I rather have a big real state when I travel and reach my destination than a small screen and when I reach my destination the screen size will slow me down
Y’all said you wanted a chunky laptop and when y’all got one you complain, there is no end
The old design is amazing. Perhaps Apple Silicon would work fine in that smaller form factor with less ventilation issues, but I’m guessing Apple didn’t want to risk more thermal problems & starting with an all-new generation was a good idea.

It was fun to watch this video AFTER the 15" macbook air came out. Luke had this idea in mind for a very long time!
I'm done with super thin laptops. I'd rather have slightly thicker laptop like the M1 pro/max MBP with superior thermals.

Want a bigger browsing computer? Go for an upgraded 2010 17” then
A thin and light and more affordable M1 16” would be an instant purchase for me
Yes
Although the regular 13" MacBook Air is good enough for my needs and don't really desire a bigger display, I know a ton of people who would really like to have a bigger MacBook but doesn't need all of the power from the M1 Pro. So I do hope Apple does make a 15" MacBook Air.
I really like the size of my 13” M1 MBP and it has all the performance I need… If the screen were a little larger I wouldn’t be mad about it, so I think a lot of people would go for a 15” MacBook Air, if the price was right. The battery life would probably be off the hook too.
I travel business and first and the 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro fits perfectly. Also as a video editor the monitor is top for editing HDR content. Cant go back to any other Mac.
I prefer the butterfly keyboard. I loved the tactile feel and the rigid confident click no matter where you touched the keys. I do understand that I am in the rare in camp in that I didn’t have issues with mine but I still wished they fixed the issues rather than move back.
Who chooses a MacBook Pro less powerful, with less ports, with less good screen, with less good sound, with butterfly keyboard, with touch bar and with heat problems because is smaller?
I'm watching him XD
If you keep complaining about these new laptops that are finally fit for professional use, Apple's going to start "innovating" again, and the next MBP will come without a screen because "brave."
I recently upgraded from a 2013 15 inch MacBook Pro to a 2019 16 inch and honestly I hardly noticed the difference in size
I believe the macbooks got thinner after 2015 up until the 16 inch came out (which is also still thinner than the newest 16 inch), so the size difference is significantly bigger for Luke.
@@ifihadfriends437 Yes good point on thickness, but I am referring to screen size. He said it doesn't fit on an airplane try and is harder to travel with. That has not been my experience going from a 15 to 16. My display is same size as the new ones.
@@MichaelBordenaro Honestly I think the 15 inch is already bit of a pain to travel with. I tend to go carry on only so that 2kg of non-malleable kind of sucks (to the point where I've seriously considered buying a little chromebook for travel.)
@@ifihadfriends437 Yeah I suppose everyone is different on that. I'm not really a lite traveler so its not a big deal for me.
15" MBP ain't that much smaller than 16" MBP, and it doesn't even fit in airplane tray tables well. So that intro doesn't make much sense. If they made a 15" MacBook Air that's close to the size of something like the XPS 15 9500, that'd be great.
The 15” 2016-2019 design is still pinnacle.
I am personally a large fan of the design of the 12" MacBook, If they brought that back with apple silicon and maybe some form of force touch keyboard with virtual keys or something then I would 100% buy it, the 12" MacBook is one of the best computers I have ever owned for on the go lightweight streaming and work
I can see Apple creating a new middle ground with a Macbook line of 13" and 15" using black bezels and being between the air and pro.
I have been looking to replace my old 13 in MacBook Pro from 2011 and wanted a larger screen. I only use it for light computing, web browsing and streaming so I do not need a powerful M1 Pro or Max. I would buy the new M1 MacBook Air if it had a bigger screen. 15 in would be perfect. I am not too bothered about the mini led display if that helps keep the cost down. Please do it Apple!!
this is becoming too much like painfully honest techs channel... i love the new macbook, i hate the new macbook, i went back to the old mac, i went back to the m1, i hate all macs, i decided to go back to the m1 max... just hear me out 💩
This is the video I’ve been wanting to watch for a while 🎉
I think the new Blender 3.1 alpha has big performance improvements on M1.
I’ve used the both the butterfly versions of 13 and 15 inch Touch Bar laptops, as well as the magic keyboard 13 and 16 inch Touch Bar laptops, not the new 14 and 16 inch pros though. The benefits of the butterfly laptops were that they were thinner, resulting in less sharp edge on the wrist. I noticed the sharp edges more on the magic keyboard models. The other benefits are less light bleed (nice at night), also full size left and right buttons (I would prefer full size up and down keys as well even if the down key extends below the rest of the Keyboard). For typing a lot all day though I prefer the magic keys, and I roll up a shirt to rest my wrists on and avoid the sharp edges. Optimal would be a tapered design with the magic keys. I like the Touch Bar for app shortcuts and customizable.
Old slim design with the power of new M1 max. .. Holy shit.
That was my first though just after I saw the new macbooks with M1 pro and max processors..
@@nnnnnn3647 you think apple was wrong to bring back the ports?!?
@@nnnnnn3647 but thanks to that these devices are all day long on battery. This is what laptop should be. You can always have MBA with M1 if you want smaller laptop. We're not there yet to have the maximum performance in a matchbox sized device.
@@nnnnnn3647 you can do the same task on M1MBA as on 2019 Intel MBP. But if you want to go increased performance, increased battery and no noise from the fans at the same time then you don't get the smaller device. M1 iPad and M1 MBA (even the M1 MBP) are the devices that provide you answer to what you expected from ARM.
@@nnnnnn3647 They are still on the same batteries. Can't beat physics. Also I don't see anything surprising in fact, that 2 years newer CPUs are more powerfull, at expense of sick thermals and power consumption....
@@nnnnnn3647 lol it’s called being giving option. You have a desktop level processor on a tablet… what’s thinner and lighter than that?
You’re also going to ignore how these don’t overheat at all compare to the intel MBP?
Idk obviously everyone has their own opinion, but the 15 inch offers relatively little more screen real estate than the 14 inch. Like i don’t see how the 15 inch makes enough of a difference in screen size for you. Also lets not forget that it might barely get you through a flight depending on what you’re doing with it on an airplane. But hey man, to each their own. I bought 1 intel Mac, and thought I’d never buy a Mac again because it was so expensive and performance was disappointing to say the least. Then i tried an M1 MacBook Pro and it was everything i always thought a Mac was.
A 15" air M1/2 would be perfect for me too. I have the 15" 2018 MBP.
is it just me or i imagined the song "i kissed a girl " remixed in "i went back to intel and i liked it"? LOOOL
My friend loves the butterfly keyboard… he is no longer my friend after he told me that
😂😂😂👍🏻
"The fans on this thing"
*Cries in 2010 MBP*
That is screaming at me as I watch this video on it.
Tbh, I actually like the butterfly keyboard when it works. It sounds nice, I can easily slide by fingers from key to key, and I really like the slim key travel when pressed. I just really hate how a good amount of my keys either double tap or simply don’t register when tapped. It’s a pain for typing papers or programming. I wish Apple would have been able to truly fix it before dumping it.
Imagine that, a top tier Core i9 computer getting relegated to the "light computing" category after only just two years.
To me the design on the 2016-2020 macbook pro looks more luxurious than it is now even though the new gen is quite great 👍

I love the 15” MacBook Air talk. I would love to see/have that product.
I miss the touchbar!! It had that kinda special and premium feel to it and was dynamic and convenient to use. I also liked the butterfly quite a bit. It felt quicker to me but it depends on what you‘re used to.
Touchbar is great for skipping YT Ads 👍😊
I am using 2020 intel 13 macbook pro about a yeaf and i cant understand people who hates touchbar that much. Its practical easy to use but too ahead for todays standards. It could be better but apple removed whole unit :(((
i also love the butterfly keyboard, please don't judge, because it's super thin, easy to use, and i've had absolutely no defect with it at all! when I was trying my dad's 12 inch macbook, it was great!
Finally someone recognise this problem :) For me the new 16" its just feel huge compared the old 15".. As a webdeveloper I dont need a M1 Pro, or Max, I dont care how fast it exports video, but I need the screen size fo coding! simply a M1 would be enough but with a big screen, but in smaller body, which I can easyl carry around wherever I want to work.. if apple would create 15" air, that would be instant get for me..

Pro of Butterfly keyboard after comparing with 2012 macbook pro: My fingers dont get stuck with the keys when fast typing
How come nobody ever talks about the improved thermals of the 16” model?
That makes it substantially better in my opinion.
Very interesting video, Luke! As for my thoughts: Speaking only of the form factor, and not the tech specs, I prefer the look of the 2019 version - and the M1 MacBook Air/Pro - over the new, "retro" look. I actually don't understand the apparent fascination with going retro, and I especially HATE the retro look of the new M1 iMacs...they look cheap and toy-like, IMHO, and I would never buy such a cheap-looking desktop to replace my 27" 5K iMac designed by Jony Ive. I was considering getting a MacBook Air when the new, M2 version comes out, but if it looks anything like the renders I've seen - carrying on the retro look - I'll either not get one, or get the M1 version before they're sold out.
The look of the new macs is not just looks is to give enough space for have good cooling solutions. Old MacBook pros thermal throttled with the intel chips because those chips were not design for those thin chasis. Perhaps the M1 would perform good enough but with a bigger chasis they run cooler and less fan speed.
The 14/16 MacBook Pros are design-wise a harp back to the Titanium PowerBook, which was designed by Jony himself. They went "retro" with this design for no other reason other than the fact that the actual "pros" who were using the prior MacBook Pros absolutely hated the design with their guts because it was a functional disaster. So I feel like the analogy doesn't really work in the context of the 14/16 MacBook Pros. Plus you can always just get a silver version of the 24-inch iMac, that option's still there no matter what config. The colours are there for the ones who really want them. If you haven't already, you should take a look at the new Macs in store, the physical design makes straight intuitive sense once you can feel the products in your hand
As I said in my initial comment, I was ONLY speaking about aesthetics, NOT tech specs, cooling needs, port availability, etc., and, since everyone is entitled to their own opinion about aesthetics, I was expressing mine, that the older MacBooks LOOK better, IN MY OPINION, than the latest versions, essentially agreeing with Luke. And, since Jony Ive was at Apple until 2019, I assume he was, at least partially, if not entirely, responsible for the design of the 2016-2019 MacBooks, showing that his aesthetic sense evolved beyond his 2012 MacBook version - and his earlier original iMac and the "colorful" iBook. As I said, aesthetic sense varies from person to person, and everyone is entitled to their own: some people like the 1957 Dodge, others like the 1975 Corvette, neither opinion is "wrong," they are just an individual's opinion.
When Best Buy briefly sold the $1799 base 2020 4-port Intel 13” MacBook Pro for $1099, I picked one up. It’s a good computer, though every time I do anything even remotely demanding, the fans spin up like crazy. But other than that, it’s a perfect compact laptop that can do a lot, and I find myself using it a fair amount. It perfectly complements my 16” M1 Pro and I even have a Boot Camp partition on it because the integrated graphics are actually decent enough for some games. I’d never suggest that anyone pay anywhere close to new price for an Intel Mac, but if you find one for cheap, they’re still great computers.
The Butterfly keyboard is better for me when I have to type the long essay as the key travel is very short so I don’t feel as fatigued as the new keyboard. I have never encountered the stuck or double key at all in one and a half year (Bought it second hand and the kb was replaced to the one with silicone protection layer). Also I noticed less backlight leaks on the gap between the chassis and the keys. However, it just the keyboard that I liked on my old 2017 13” w/o touchbar. My new m1 pro 14” is far superior in every way
Bruh what. Buy a mechanical keyboard and ascend to godhood.
@@mauricioe.matamoros8993 I have a $250 64% custom mech but I still prefer the very low travel.
Butterfly keyboard was sooooo satisfying to click and text on it. Still miss it after 2 years using 16" MBP
I hope Apple keeps the Air series as the (relatively) low-cost entry laptop, with the M1 processor, and 13" and 15" options, and saves the Pro/Max/M2 silicon for the more expensive MB Pro line. I think they could make more money by gradually dropping the price, than they could by adding unnecessary performance to a machine that's already way over the top for entry-level users. The market for $400-$500 laptops is massive, and Apple could own it with an M1 Air in that range.
15” Macbook Air M1/M2 would be simply perfect.
Whilst I was initially reluctant to accept a modest trade-in figure from Apple for my 2019 15" MBP, I do not regret for one moment shelling-out for the current 16" M1 Pro MBP.
The Intel model was - to put it kindly - a buggy, loud, overheating, crash-prone embarrassment of what was supposed to be a premium, high-performance computer. It certainly did not deserve the 'Pro' moniker.
You said so yourself in your October 15th video - effectively saying that the dirt-cheap prices for Intel models would reflect their undesirability.
Certain software issues with Catalina and Big Sur didn't help matters either, and Time Machine on Monterey is currently a disgrace.
Granted, the current 16" model is perhaps not the most versatile unit to incorporate into cabin luggage - certainly not when good quality protective cases - not sleeves - are nowhere to be found. I would argue, however, that the current 16" model is not necessarily meant for that, but rather for working-from-home professionals who don't necessarily see the point in a heavier - and much less portable - desktop.
I would probably have chosen a 15" model if Apple had offered it with an M1 Pro chip, but I have no problem with the extra weight in the 16" model either.
With all due respect, I think you missed the point of his video. He even acknowledged that pretty much everything but the form factor was not the greatest, and that the new MacBook Pros are better. What he was saying is that form factor and thinness would be perfect for a new 15” MacBook Air with Apple Silicon. He was pointing out that all of the compromises the Intel Macs had to make to be thin are next to gone with Apple Silicon. So no, he is not saying the 15” MacBook Pro is desirable for power users; he is saying that form factor would be desirable to causal users not needing or wanting the price, thickness, and power of the 16” MacBook Pro.
@@ucanthavemyname9802 Fair enough: The old 15" form-factor was indeed sleek, and it would've made a lot of sense to me, if the base M1 MBP had been offered as a 15" model as well. I don't really know why Apple retired that size.
In my admittedly uneducated opinion, there are no redeeming features in the Intel model from 2019: Even the sleek form-factor did it no favours with regard to heat-management. Hence my initial post. Cheers for the feedback.
THANK YOU! Been wishing for a big screen but smaller build. SOOO many people buy Apple but don't need that power!
I’ve been saying this since the release of the M1 Pro and Max! Apple hasn’t had a lower lever machine with a large screen like on the PC side, which a lot of people would love to have! Let’s be honest, the M1 MacBook Air’s performance is great right now, with fantastic battery life and not everyone needs the full pro spec machine however, having a larger screen in a fan less design with improved performance over the current machine? Heck yeah, we would take that!
I have wrist problems and the butterfly keyboard is the only keyboard that doesn’t aggravate them. I’ve tried mechanical and ergonomic and nothing worked. The new magic keyboard thankfully has been fine too, but nothing felt as good to my wrists as the butterfly keyboards.
So essentially "Apart from practically everything about it it's a great laptop"? It's a pity we can't see the dislike counter any more.
I still ordered the 16" model because I want the better battery, bigger screen and better thermals, I think I'll be very happy with it.
Same here plus ~Ms are limited for screens outputs and are strongly RAM dependent, more than intel ones.
Let me get this straight when the 14 and a 16 inch M ones came out this year everybody including you were raving about them. They didn’t do anything revolutionary with the ports they just gave them back to you and the mag safe. and I’m sure to do that they had to beef it up a little bit make a little thicker. Everybody was impressed with the performance they were happy to have the ports back people loved the display the keyboard the trackpad and a few months later you’ve decided it’s too thick it’s too heavy? I enjoy your videos but I am a little confuse why you didn’t figure this in before you purchased one it seems like the 14 inch would’ve been better for you To use when you’re traveling.I’m glad Apple is making things a little thicker I’m glad the phones are a little thicker so we have more batteries I’m over the thin crap let’s make things a thin as we possibly can I’m past that if it’s a little thicker a little heavier but you get an advantage from it signed me up.like I said I’m just confuse people don’t think things through when they purchase something but that’s your choice you spent the money whatever makes you happy I certainly wouldn’t go backwards in performance

Little did Luke know Apple would answer his prayers with the 15" MBA not even 2 years later
This video makes no sense.

Honestly, the few times I've used a butterfly keyboard MacBook, I've liked it a lot. It may have been that most of those times were when I was trying out MacBook Pros at Best Buy a few years ago, back when they were elusive and out of my price-range. I also tend to prefer low-profile keys with not a lot of travel, but still with a good amount of tactile feedback (kind of an outcast in that regard, I know). I get that the sheer unreliability of the boards is more than enough to be permanently frustrated with the design, but in terms of pure feel, I definitely wouldn't mind using one as a daily driver.
You're running out of video ideas Luke, we can see that! No one will choose intel over M1..only people who need specific x86 apps. End of the debate, have a nice day!
1:14 No you're not. Heavier than a M1 Pro 14" (by half a pound), slower, and with lower screen resolution. Only thing going for it is cheaper. Larger MB Air probably a good idea but you should have gone into where it might slot into the Apple laptop lineup in terms of cost.
lol it’s so much fun to watch this video in 2023… asking for a 15” MacBook Air 😂😂
The size has definitely not been a drawback for me. I get the screen size I want and if I need to go anywhere with it, it easily fits in the backpack I was already using, and now I can comfortably use it without a monitor, unlike my 2017 13 inch. After a career change, my backpack has actually lightened up since this laptop is basically all I need. It also makes for an awesome secondary display next to my monitor, which I never bothered to do with the 13 inch because it was so small. Performance is probably overkill for me, but it also won't be struggling in less than 5 years like my 13 inch was with basic tasks.
