    Nice job, Mark. I purchased a MacBook 16 in base model a few weeks ago. I am a photographer and it works beautifully for photo editing. I frequently have Lightroom, Photoshop and Luminar 4 running at the same time. Very smooth, no over-heating. In truth I have difficulty seeing the 13 inch screen due to my aging eyes. I have 2012 iMac 27 inch but I sitting for long in front of it gives me a neck ache despite having the proper chair height. great real world review, having mentioned coming from a 13 inch macbook, assume this was the previous years model. I would like to get your thoughts on a video the compares the two, if you still own the 13" and left to keep one which would it be?

      Awesome - thanks for the feedback and for watching, Peterson! I’m afraid my 13” was the very first generation of the new keyboard design, back from 2016. Therefore it wouldn’t be much of a comparison 😂 If it was last year’s - totally, that’d make sense. I will be checking out the Apple silicon Macs when they’re launched, though - so stay tuned.

      Had it since Nov last year, super solid machine, keyboard is very nice to type on, speakers are rich, accurate bass and clear at the same time.
      Remember to keep it plugged in whenever possible you'll conserve battery cycle this way.
      Also idk if you plan on using your 16 with an external monitor or not, but theres reports of power draw spikes / fan spikes depending on your connection type. Do some youtube search first if this is what you're planning, and also install Mac Fan Control

    Great video! Easy subscribe. I’m on the fence about going for the 16” as an upgrade for my 2013 13” and think after watching this I will wait to see if we get a refresh soon as if I do not like the new direction this model will get cheaper anyways. Frankly my fingers are crossed for a refresh with an upgraded intel chip and no Touch Bar but that is a pipe dream I reckon. I really loved your video- I decided to buy an i7 32gb 5600m 1tb model last week because of multiple review but I found yours the most informative. How have you found the i9 over the i7 eg what kind of stuff do you do that takes advantage of multicore. With regards to the 2020 16inch they will just do a 10th gen CPU and possibly better webcam not that drastic a boost in performance. Btw 5600m is the graphics option that doesn't have external monitor power draw issue

    • @MarkEllisReviews
      @MarkEllisReviews  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much, Paul! I’ve never used the i7 so it’s difficult to compare. My thoughts about tech in general are that you buy what you can afford and steer clear of too many online comparisons - they just become irrelevant if you can only afford a certain model (that goes for all of us). And you know what? The model you buy will be awesome, because these machines really are incredibly powerful.
      The stuff I do which hits multi core is video/audio work and it just breezes through it. Yours will work 😉 Thanks for tuning in!

      @@MarkEllisReviews Thanks for acknowledging and for considering my feedback and yes, my Thinkpad T440s is due for a replacement. I am considering the Dell XPS 17, but only a 1TB factory option available here in Australia. The other alternative was the Thinkpad P1 Gen 3, but at more than A$10,000 retail, an extremely costly purchase and recent reviews are not all that glowing (i.e. fan noise, screen flickering, etc.). I am indeed curious about the Mac operating system, but I am running a number of non-subscription (fully paid) Windows based programs which would require Parallels. So, still undecided, especially with the ARM chips rumors.

My work mainly focuses on audio production an I mostly cap out at 60 Tracks, so it's not too heavy. Secondly, would you recommend waiting for Apple silicon Macs, hoping the first machine will be a Pro Device? Thank you and keep up the great work!

      Based on your reply, the 16" would be fine. It's just a bit of a pain to carry about regularly if you're heading to coffee shops and what not. I think you'll just get a bit more headroom with the 16" and the extra screen real estate is a bonus for music production.

    Hi Mark,
    I appreciate your review based on actual usage over a fairly long time. I’m looking at getting the top tier one with 64 GB or RAM, the 5600M, and 4 TB of SSD. My existing MacBook Pro is the 2015 model with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, and while it still works fine, it is getting very slow on the very large photos that I take. I mainly use Lightroom, Capture One, and Photoshop, but would like to get into a bit of video, most likely Final Cut Pro, and I would like to do some music as well - I have a copy of Studio One 4. I suppose that’s why your review resonated because you seem to have a similar content creation focus.
    The plan is to have the Lightroom catalog on the internal SSD rather than an external one. This will push the price up but reading various reviews on external SSD, the performance on them seems to be a bit hit and miss. Also, to get similar speeds on external storage you have to pay quite a bit anyway.
    One of my concerns is the fan noise and have even looked at an iMac Pro because they’re said to be very quiet, even under load. I do like to be able to take it with me though so the iMac Pro (or the iMac for that matter) is not really suitable. As one reviewer said, the battery life on the iMac sucks.

    • @MarkEllisReviews
      @MarkEllisReviews  3 года назад

      Thank you for the feedback, George - that means the world. Really glad the review resonated with you, and it does sound like we work on similar content.
      That spec will offer serious longevity, so while it'll be a big investment upfront, you'll get so much use out of it (4-5 years, probably). That's what I love about Macs. And as for the SSD, I think going big is a great idea when you're working on stuff like photography and video. I edit on the MacBook's SSD now and simply offload the files to external storage when done. On occasion, I'll edit on a 1TB SanDisk Extreme Pro, which is super quick.
      The iMac Pro is an interesting alternative, but I think that's currently let down by the ageing design and fact it's likely to be updated soon (although, as usual, who knows when!). And yeah, the battery life on iMacs is dreadful...
      Thanks for watching!

    Hey Mark. Great review. I'm a music producer myself, I use Cubase. Doing all my work on my 2015 15" model atm, amazing piece of tech even to this day. I do feel it has reached it's limitations recently and I've been thinking of going for the 16". From other reviews I've learned that there was an issue in the pro audio community with the fact that the internal audio hardware had a loud "click sound/crackle" almost every time you would play and pause audio in different media (ytube, Logic, iTunes etc). I went in a store to check this on a displayed model and indeed that happened. They all said the issue disappeared when you'd connect an external sound card (which you would do for all studio work or recording sessions, obviously), but if you are on the go and want to put down a quick idea in your DAW, that seems quite annoying for a 4-5k EU pro device. Some even had issues while connecting headphones.
    Also, when in my studio I use two external screens, all is smooth and silent with the 2015 model. On the 16" fans seem to max out even while just connecting a screen without any workload at all.
    I wanted to ask you if you encountered any of those issues I just mentioned. I feel it's time for an upgrade as well, and going back to Windows after this much time is a def no. Really love the smooth workflow of the Mac, just don't want to get frustrated for small issues that shouldn't appear on a machine like this.
    Thanks!

    • @MarkEllisReviews
      @MarkEllisReviews  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback, Andrei! The popping/clicking was definitely there when I first got the machine, but it's fixed now (I think due to a software/firmware update, but might be wrong). Certainly, I've not had any issues with it since in that regard.
      As for the external monitors, I rarely if ever use one with this machine, so can't comment I'm afraid (although I'll do some testing at some stage). However, if you scroll through the comments on this video, you'll see it is noted a few times, and there are apparently some rather large threads about it on Apple forums... I'd give that a good bit of research before you buy just in case, but personally, I wouldn't let it get in the way of enjoying this brilliant music production machine.

      issue is that the computer can pull max around 90w of power and connecting the external dislay keep the dGpu active, taking 50w power already, leaving around 20 for the cpu (taking inefficiency into account) s it will be slow as hell and with the fan always full blast

This is not entirely Apples' fault, I put the majority of the blame for the fan noise of this computer on Intel. The AMD 5000 series graphics are a big improvement in terms of efficiency but the GPU does not run as cool as NVIDIA. I think “professional” isn’t very subjective. A lot of people associate the word with high quality or high demands, but a professional in something is just a person who does that something as their profession. Their primary preoccupation, their living. There’s nothing about quality there, at least not explicitly. Implicitly, we learn to expect high quality work and being demanding of one’s hardware from people who do something for a living, because they usually do it well. But ultimately, professional is a ridiculous term to use as an “audience”. A professional is also a teacher, a plumber, and a shop owner - and ultimately not all professionals need stuff “for professionals”. “For professionals” in this context just means stuff that can handle demanding digital workflows. And so, instead of dividing people into hobbyists and professionals, which is insanely dismissive of what hobbyists are often times doing and creates impossible expectations for some “professionals”, it’s best to divide people into how demanding their workflows are. This is, of course, much harder and less convenient, and it’s hard to convey harder concepts on the internet without losing attention (which is also why typically non-orthodox opinions on things don’t get much attention, they usually require a good understanding of the topic you’re referring to, plus the internet loves echo chambers), but i just wanted to mention that professionalism is quite quantifiable, and not in hardware performance levels.
    consider this but my own perspective on the subject

      I couldn’t agree more, Simon. Being ‘professional’ at something is entirely personal, and that’s not for myself, Apple or anyone else to label. However, I’m not convinced Apple does that these days (they used to, for sure). Where there might be a disconnect is in pricing and feature set. This laptop is a brilliant tool for professional video editors, audio people, coders and photographers, but what about super keen hobbyists? It’s a big investment, and I’m not convinced there’s an alternative in the MacBook line up if you need this size screen and power. Thanks very much for commenting though - love hearing your thoughts.

      @@MarkEllisReviews I’ve been thinking about a good way to word it just now, and I thought that perhaps the best way to put it is that professionalism is neither subjective nor objective, not personal or relative in a sense that implies subjectivity, but rather contextual - you can tell that a tool is a “pro” tool when someone uses it for a living, but the same thing can be used to make money as much as it can waste money for the buyer, and so the contextual part comes into play. When we’re already inside a given context - let’s say Paule Scher using an iMac for graphic design - we can definitively tell whether or not the tool is a “pro” tool. In her case, it is, but she may as well be using an iMac to watch a musical performance on RUclips. Hence, this doesn’t apply when taken out of the *full* context. I think that the best way to put it in words is by using context, because unlike similar words, it implies indirect objectivity, which is exactly how I would personally declare a tool “pro”. Ultimately, the naming schemes are there for the money, the tools themselves are there to do stuff. It’s all about who uses it, not what it is
      I hope this doesn’t feel like an extra paragraph to say that grass is green, sometimes i get a bit lost in thoughts and repeat myself.. anywho, thanks for reading!

    Warning to Buyers: the 16 inch MacBook Pro is impossible to use with an external monitor. The GPU draws too much power, then overheats from that excess power with its fans start spinning really loud. At that point, it's impossible to do any heavy work in anything like Logic Pro X or Final Cut as the MacBook Pro will severely throttle (kernel_task taking 200-1000%). There are massive threads about this issue on Apple Support forums, Macrumors, AMD forums etc. with thousands of posts.
    I'm personally trying to figure out a solution but there seems to be none. Please look it up before buying this machine. Apple has maintained radio silence about this issue, similar to how they didn't acknowledge the butterfly keyboard failures/design defects in the initial few years... till they were hit with class-action lawsuits. What a mess !

      @bloodlustuponme 3 года назад

      @@MarkEllisReviews I've tested this with multiple 1080p & 4k monitors/TVs. Never tested it with a Pro XDR as I cannot afford a $5000 monitor (I doubt many people actually buy it either), but I'd assume the issue persists. I'd suggest trying it yourself. Simply connect an external monitor (while keeping your MacBook lid open so you have a total of 2 displays) and run some project in Logic or Final Cut Pro. Watch it overheat & throttle to death. Here's some of the forum threads documenting the issue:
      discussions.apple.com/thread/250878229

      Thanks - I'll take a look into it. I have connected it to an external monitor on occasion with no noticeable issue, although haven't used pro apps while I was doing so. As for the XDR display, I hear you - that's super-pro, and definitely has an audience, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it works flawlessly with that. It is common for Apple to avoid publicly addressing what they presumably assume to be 'edge case' issues, compared to, say, an iPhone which can't maintain a decent cellular signal. My guess is that it is absolutely something they'll be working to rectify in house. Doesn't make it any less frustrating for those affected right now, mind.

    • @bloodlustuponme
      @bloodlustuponme 3 года назад +1

      @@MarkEllisReviews The PRO XDR wasn’t even released when the 16 inch MacBook Pro came out. Apple should have tested this internally with those LG UltraFine 4k displays they sell in every Apple Store. A pro laptop should work with any off the shelf standard display. Also, had any of those big RUclipsrs, influencers or tech ‘journalists’ actually tested this laptop with an external display, instead of running some meaningless GeekBench score, they would have found out the issue.
      Trust me, this defect is really massive.. maybe universal. Unfortunately, the 16 inch Mac has a very small market compared to iPhone/iPad and it’s a relatively recent product that started selling in Nov 2019.
      The irony of the whole situation is I had originally purchased a 2018 15 inch MacBook Pro in Dec 2018. Over the next 1.5 years, it had multiple repeated failures (keyboard twice, display, I/O chips, charging etc.). Apple couldn’t figure out the solution. So Apple gave me a 16 inch MacBook Pro as a replacement in Aug 2020. I might sound frustrated and disillusioned because I’ve been trying to get a working laptop for the past 2 years now.
