    Good video, question:if the latest iMac 27 and the MBK 16 were both desk tops which one would you get based on their specs and the future of ARM. I understand laptops are the only option to pack and go but I'm mainly working with my own art which has been digitized and some very basic audio recordings, I don't game. I would get the top option from iMac but up until all this overheating chatter with external screen etc I was leaning towards the MBK 16 entry level......

    • @MarkKwak
      @MarkKwak  3 года назад

      If they were both desktops, I'd get the iMac because of its crispy 5k screen and capability to be more maximized specs-wise. That being said, the portability is game changing for me, so I can't think of one simply as a desktop.

    Thanks for this informative upload. Apart from the price (I would rather game on a playstation, if I were so inclined), they could instantly improve this laptop by replacing the terrible camera, bringing back at least the SD card slot and for me, also an USB-A port. I am also not a fan of the touchbar. Apple is really unique in some ways, removing or retrogressing on a lot of the previous features, then slowly re-introducing them as highly celebrated 'improvements' (i.e. 'magic' keyboard, mechanical escape key, etc.) Do you think that MBP enthusiasts would complain if at least some of these legacy ports would be bought back, especially the SD card slot? As Steve Jobs once said "Ask customers what they want and then work your way back", opposed has happened since his untimely passing. Regarding your editing. I would have preferred less jump-cuts and omitting that female wailing soundtrack. Thumb up, of course.

    There is a software bug on atleast the 16” 2020 models, when you plug in an external display the amd gpu ramps up in watts and produces atleast 10c of extra heat for no reason, and because the cpu and gpu shares the same heatsink the heat becomes a global increase, BUT! If you put the laptop in clamshell mode the watt decreases 😑

I also use TG Pro to control my fan speeds based on temps. Doing basic stuff like surfing the web, watching RUclips or Netflix and my CPU never gets above 42C and my GPU's never go over 45C.

      @MarkKwak  3 года назад

      Just my opinion, but if you need the power, going with the 16" i7 would be the way to go, since the 13" will likely get the Apple Silicon update first and it will be a while before the 16" gets any. That being said if you don't need the power - it may be worth waiting to see what Apple unveils in Nov.

      @@Ifalvarado The 5300/5500M are not efficient and they do not play well with most external displays in most configurations except for select single displays in clamshell mode. They have a large power draw at idle (18-20 watts with most external displays), much higher draw under load, and an accompanying level of waste heat that is potentially annoying due to fan noise. More problematic is that this total increase in heat does result in more (and sometimes significant) CPU throttling. Finally, in the most extreme cases, what such elevated heat means to the system's longevity is unclear, but we do know that heat is the enemy of these systems. The 5600M's design and use of highly-efficient HBM greatly reduces this power draw and waste heat, and accompanying overall temps are lower (and overall performance, including CPU performance, is higher.)
      If you never use externals and you rarely use the discrete graphics, it's not as much of a concern. But if you do either, the 5600M is a very, very, very worthwhile upgrade in my personal opinion. There are many 5300/5500M owners (predominantly those who at least sometimes use external displays and/or those with graphics-intensive workloads) who wish they had the option of or had chosen the 5600M (the 5600M was added as an option to the 16-inch MacBook Pro about 6-months after the 16-inch's initial release.)

    it really doesn't just work so well or so beautifully, though. when i got my 16" i had to download and redownload the 12gb big sur update about 5 times. it's a widely reported problem. one of the most common error messages is because the package identifier doesn't have permissions to install. yes, an OS update from apple, being installed on an apple laptop, fails due to an unrecognised package signature. good video, otherwise. i just feel the reputation apple has for being easy to use, 'it just works', is really several generations out-of-date.

    Nice review! Just thought I'd share my own experiences. I have mainly used a macbook for the past 7+ years, but I also do use windows from time to time (via bootcamp). I have heard many people say that "it just works" with macbooks and macos. However, I think that statement overlooks a lot of the downsides and problems that these machines have. While yes they do indeed work if you use them for basic things like content consumption and basic word processing, I have noticed that if you do anything else, macbooks run into a lot of problems. 3rd party applications run poorly on macos, even something as simple as google chrome is super inefficient on macos as compared to windows, it makes the fans go off and destroys the battery life, safari is not a good alternative as it is pretty slow (looks like apple has been neglecting it for some time). Secondly, the thermal design is absolutely aweful, quite possibly among the worst I've seen in any laptop, and this is not just a problem with the old macbooks, the new ones are just as bad if not worse. There is something seriously wrong with the product if it hits 70 degrees when you slightly push the machine, if you use it in clamshell mode, be prepared to see constant temps above 80 degrees. Thirdly, app support is lacking, there are a lot of apps that are not made on macos or are made very poorly on macos and require you to use bootcamp, that just something annoying to deal with on a constant basis. Based on my experiences, I plan to switch to a windows machine for my next laptop, while overall the macbook is decent, I just think that its not meant for someone like myself.

    • @MarkKwak
      @MarkKwak  3 года назад

      What a detailed comment, thanks so much for the thoughtfulness. The thermals may be hit or miss based on apps and services running as I haven't dealt with these levels of thermals on a normal basis myself. I don't doubt your experience whatsoever - your data point is a good one.

    People always say that Apple doesn't innovate anymore but I would argue that they innovate differently than others, especially these days. Sure, they're not known for coming out with the most unique or crazy form factors of computing devices. Leave that to Microsoft and Samsung for sure, but what Apple has created is one of the most hardware/software efficient phones on the market and are the leaders when it comes to tablet computers with their iPads. They have been apart of the SOC race for a while now with their chip sets in their devices and now will be bringing that innovation to their Mac line up. While Microsoft and Samsung have been innovating as far as nifty/trendy hardware, Apple has been innovating with their own custom silicon that powers their computers. Something you can't say about many other mainstream computer and smartphone manufactures who depend on third party all-in-one solutions that don't always match up well hardware wise.

    Here is my biggest issue with my 16in. USB C is only rated to pass through 100w of power. When you start doing anything on this machine that puts it through it paces like video editing, the fans speed up so high to cool the CPU it pulls 125w of power. You are already at a power loss and then add in Apple only supplies a 96w charger and you drain power even while plugged in.
    I’ve had multiple times when I can continuously use my laptop without having to stop and let it charge a bit without apps open.
    This is a huge design flaw by Apple and should be a class action lawsuit.

    I have a MBP 16 (base model) and now I wish I can return it. It has very serious thermal issues. The computer would frequently freeze due to overheating, sometimes even right after it boots up with no apps running in the background. The CPU load would go up to a 100% easily because of overheating, and the fans would run at full speed. In fact a lot of times it is even underperforming my 13" macbook pro. I did some research online and realized that this is actually a very common issue among all macbook pro 16 users. I know some people really love this macbook pro but I just want to tell people my experience so they know the risks before deciding to buy it.

    • @MarkKwak
      @MarkKwak  3 года назад +2

      I have not dealt with any thermal issues even when performing some pretty demanding tasks but this is a good data point - it seems YMMV. If you're under the 1 yr warranty, I highly suggest taking it to Apple - their Applecare is pretty fantastic.

    Not every apple device “just works”. A lot of them have a lot of bugs and the MacBooks with the butterfly keyboards made my life hell for a couple of years. They do make good things, but not everything they make is good. I especially love the iPad pros. Been a fan since they came out and I don’t see myself ever getting a different tablet. Even if it is the most fragile device I have ever bought.

    If MBP is so great why is there a class-action lawsuit over its Retina display?
    If MBP is so great where is the touchscreen, pen support, 1080p webcam, etc.?
    It's 2020, not 2010...lol

    • @zednik8956
      @zednik8956 3 года назад

      Ill agree with you on the webcam and the lawsuit. flex gate is something that should have been resolved the minute they knew there was a recurring problem with it and the webcam is just laughable but the thing is webcams are pretty shit across the board for all laptops except for the surface line of laptops where theyre absolutely steller. My girlfriend recently bought a roughly $1500 laptop from asus and her laptops webcam is dog shit and her microphone too.
      With the touch screen not everyone wants a touchscreen laptop. Its not nice to use nor is it convenient. Ive had windows laptops with touch screens and i always disable the touch in device manager. Its not super practical unless you have one of those laptops with a folding hinge and with the stylus its the same issue. Using a stylus on a laptop without a 360 hinge is not worth it and is shit to use.
      I feel as though apple get a lot of shit for their reliability and next to none gets thrown at razer which would be their windows equiv, razer has god awful support that will take forever to fix your device if they even allow you to get it fixed by them and chances are its going to come back unfixed or with another issue. There are countless horror stories from that company yet no one says anything about them even though they charge the same for their top end laptops.
      Apple arent great but they do provide quality items and a great experience and especially in recent years they seem to have turned a new leaf and fixing their shit.

    Idk I've only had this a few days and already see a lot of problems
    - it gets uncomfortably warm even from basic tasks like web browsing, specifically RUclips. I primarily use Chrome and was told for whatever reason this model just can't handle it. But even safari does it.
    - because it gets hot fast the fans gets LOUD fast
    - battery life doesn't get even close to the supposed 11h battery.
    - when connected to another monitor the cursor lags about every 10 or so seconds
    Never had these problems on my 2017 15'. And I could use play station remote play and dolphin emulation
    Seriously debating switching to the 13 m1
