Hey Luke! Excellent videos as always. A bit of constructive (hopefully!) feedback, as an iOS developer the video editing centric comparisons are not as applicable to me. In future videos, could you include a compile time comparison? Firefox compile is an easy one. Or since this is a Mac centric channel, an Xcode compile of some type? Thank you for the awesome content as usual! Cheers!
+1 here! So many RUclipsrs focus on video rendering. It makes sense, as that is what they think about all day. But as a developer I want to know if the i9 is worth it over the i7. Thanks for the great video!

Theyll make sure that the 2016 is still the preferred purchase for those that need it tho. the 14 inch will be good for everything but video editing at 4K im betting.
Apple almost delivered an adequate base model here. Almost. The issue is the RAM, only 16 GB and NOT upgradable (that last part is key here). And the upgrade to 32 GB is very overpriced.
Timur Tripp I got the base model and the only thing that worries me is the 16gb. It’s been surprisingly fine even in after effects, but already hitting the limit. $400 for a $70 chip just seems unfair.
Well, you're not just paying for a regular piece of RAM. It's all soldered on, and only made if ordered, so you're paying for that too. You can't add more after the fact.
@@Scott__C Not a reason it can't be priced similarly to a regular stick of RAM (or slightly higher, say $200), as they are simply substituting one set of chips for another. Apple makes good products, but the $400 for 32 GB is pure greed while the GPU and 1 TB SSD prices are actually reasonable.
you really don't need a terabyte to edit 4K footage (internal 1tb is what you meant I assume). What does 4K even mean? GoPro shoots 4K and so does Lumix G7 and MBPCC4K. The 2.3GHZ->2.4GHZ isn't really about the % increase of performance, it is more to do with the 2.4GHZ being a better bin than the 2.3GHZ and thus they tend to have lower temps and thus throttle less.
Very comprehensive video. Was definitely wondering if I needed all of that RAM and storage, but this definitely sold me on a cheaper Mac. Thanks a bunch!

The overly priced the Macbook Pro knowing that most people are not going to buy anyway. But it makes the overly priced base model like a great bargain.

I need a new laptop...my 2011 17 “ MacBook Pro died after owning it for 9 years now! Saving money to get the 2019 model. Definitely getting the higher end model with 32gb ram!
Thanks a lot Luke for doing all the work and sharing this video. Would you think that the i7 base model with 32gb RAM upgrade is enough for video editing or the i9 with base specs would be better? I would be using FCPX for editing FHD videos and probably a little bit of 4K. I also only do video edits as a hobby. I’m not much worried about the storage as I am planning to get an external SSD to save files. I just can’t decide if I should go for a 6 core i7 + 32gb ram or 8 core i9 + 16gb ram for my usage. Also the comparison you made with the graphics cards were pretty helpful, it at least made my decision on that part easier now. I would appreciate your expert advice and suggestions. Keep up the great work and God bless!
That exact same configuration costs $4,235 in the UK because of how Apple don't even pretend to use the exchange rate. They just change the currency symbol. The $2,799 Macbook is £2,799 ($3,592)
I only got 16gb of ram with my 2018 MBP and wish I'd bought more, for me it struggles with After effects. Obviously once you've bought the configuration you're stuck with it for good so choose wisely. Apple prices for ram are ridiculous though.
How did you know that you needed more RAM? You said you were using 12-14GB RAM with the base model but considering MacOS uses any RAM you put in it it's really not a good indicator. If you for some reason had 256GB RAM it might use 220GB and so on... that doesn't mean you suddenly need more RAM, it just means it's using whatever it has.
Luke, someone else did a comparison and the main difference in the graphics is that in graphics programs like Blender the 8GB VRAM there is a noticeable performance gain.
I use these everyday both personally and in my porfolio companies. For everyday workflow (internet, email, Slack, productivity), they are 100% usuable with no noticeable lag or performance hit.
I ended up ordering the same spec as you, but opted for the maxxed out processor. I’m planning to put the extra money for storage into a thunderbolt 3 storage drive/nas later down the line.
Every reviewer ever: "You're basically fine with the base model" Also every reviewer ever: *buys really high spec macbook every time without fail 8gb of VRAM is a life saviour in 3D applications where project rely on GPU to have everything stored and instantly available. It's leaps ahead of 4gb, which was little even 2 years ago.. 32gb of VRAM is also great if you're doing heavy photo editing or large video productions or just have more production programs open at the same time. It's really easy to have 20+gb of RAM used, we're just used to 16gb and adapt around its limitations. So - I think his personal macbook is very well specked and it'll hold its value very well because of that.
Well for my base model with 16gb of ram, I have some hope for 4k video editing since I could edit some short pieces of 4k video in the MacBook Air with 8gb ram,and even put it some effects. Since FCPX doesn't suck so much ram, I hope this base model lasts a few good years.
I got the 64G and 1TB version. Looking back after 2 years of using, I would say the 10% performance increase shouldn't be THAT expensive. The base model is the best!

I ordered one 4 days ago but I made the mistake of upgrading to the i9 on the $2400 version (I didn’t know there was another i9 option until I actually looked lol). 2 days after ordering I called Apple support and canceled the order so I could buy the better option. Coincidence that I chose the exact same hardware as yours, without seeing this video haha.

I just ordered the $2799 model for $2499.. so definitely worth getting that over the base model even on sale.
Everything about your videos is top class except the sound since you moved to the new space (it has a slight hiss and echo). It doesn’t bother me but would love to see your channel grow and make you some of those well deserved RUclips dollars. Go get it son and thanks for such great work!
That “lets find out” cringe 1:16 😂
I need a new laptop...my 2011 17 “ MacBook Pro died after owning it for 9 years now! Saving money to get the 2019 model. Definitely getting the higher end model with 32gb ram!
lmao 1:14 made me laugh out loud in the library
I WONDER WHY 😧
I tried the basic one and the custom highest one, neither of them could change the crazy fan noise and heating surface. Checked.
I got your custom with 64gb ram, super happy having upgraded from a 2011 MBP....
I ordered exactly the same configuration and now just see this video. Simply wow!
Luke, someone else did a comparison and the main difference in the graphics is that in graphics programs like Blender the 8GB VRAM there is a noticeable performance gain.
Great video... much appreciated.
Can you please make a video called "is a 12inch macbool still worth it in 2019?" Would gladly appreciate if you did.
I use these everyday both personally and in my porfolio companies. For everyday workflow (internet, email, Slack, productivity), they are 100% usuable with no noticeable lag or performance hit.
@@alliejr thanks for the reply.
2:20 how can it use more if you got 16GB? put there 32GB and it will use more ..
I ended up ordering the same spec as you, but opted for the maxxed out processor. I’m planning to put the extra money for storage into a thunderbolt 3 storage drive/nas later down the line.
Every reviewer ever: "You're basically fine with the base model"
Also every reviewer ever: *buys really high spec macbook every time without fail
8gb of VRAM is a life saviour in 3D applications where project rely on GPU to have everything stored and instantly available.
AMO - Always Max Out. He could've done better.
Well for my base model with 16gb of ram, I have some hope for 4k video editing since I could edit some short pieces of 4k video in the MacBook Air with 8gb ram,and even put it some effects. Since FCPX doesn't suck so much ram, I hope this base model lasts a few good years.
i7 32gb ram 1tb ssd 5300M 4gb the best set up? As in it will run cold 🥶 so it can beat the higher spec when those run super hot 🥵?
I got the 64G and 1TB version. Looking back after 2 years of using, I would say the 10% performance increase shouldn't be THAT expensive. The base model is the best!
Didn't see this video or the videos before this one, but I came to the same conclusion with my MacBook Pro 16" configuration.
An excellent review tackling a question many users are facing when taking a plunge in the new 16inch Macbooks. Thanks alot!
Ur configuration is excatly what I would buy,and I think 80% people that went for upgrades are looking at this
_"100MHz base clock, 200MHz boost clock - you're not going to notice the difference."_
Until two years from now when the minimum support specs on your favorite applications read "Minimum requirement: 2.4GHz".
Doh!
If you're doing it right, $200 is effortless insurance. Couple hundred bucks? A non-issue. GET THE FASTER PROCS!
Orangeman Cometh it doesn't matter, it will reduce frequency due to heat. Then they will perform same
Great Video man. Do the fans kick in more often on the i9 compared to the i7? And is the 32gb ram worth it?
i customized it the same way!!! base model upgrade ram, upgrade graphics and 1 tb!
The prices of Apple in Europe are ridiculous compared to US prices.
Very educational video regarding to buy which one for what porpoises. Thank you for your effort and giving us all that information.
Personally, I’ve always found the “middle” option to be the best bang for your buck. There’s a very real case of diminishing returns with upgrades.
No
The i9 option in the base model has higher clock than the $2799 model. If you choose same options for both models, the price is exactly the same.
Just bought a base model 16 Mac Pro with your link... thanks for the great info and allowing me to make an educated buying decision! Cheers
How is the RAM usage? Is 32GB neccessary?
Finally I can stop watching and wishing I had a MacBook Pro... just bought my first MacBook Pro 16 inch from B&H photo. Got the $2799 model for $2499! Fantastic!
Hey I’m interested in that deal can you tell me where I can find it?, thanks !
Thank you for the amazing videos. I LOVE when you make these types of videos and they motivate me every single day.
is there any difference in the fan noise between i7 and i9 models?
Please help! I need a computer for editing RUclips videos and learning photo editing in LR and PS. My 2 choices are :
A: get a 16gb, i5 512 13”
And sell it when the 14” is released or
B: get the base model 16”
Kevin Josephs i think if you not need big screen 13 inch 2.4ghz 16 gb ram is worth it you have more speed from base model 1.4ghz and fast SSD
Should i upgrade mine from Macbook Pro 15 inch 2016 to this Macbook Pro 2019 16’ ?
shadxxgray_ i think yes because first you become new keyboard and big screen and with strong graphics card i think worth it
thet base model is always the most worthy to buy
no doubt
I see every reason to get the specs that you got Luke. That's what a person on the go would need for completing their work while on the go. Thank you for the review.
Did research for 4-5 weeks on buying a MacBook Pro.
Just bought this same exact setup. Solid video.
im watching on the samsung chromebook worth 99$ lol =))
Wow with those specs the MacBook Pro 16" costs 3824€ ($4290) in Germany....
4:32 What is the name of benchmark? What do these numbers represent? This is the only time in my life that I realize how important it is to always add the title of the graph
