Is the cheapest 16 inch MacBook Pro really 'Pro'?

- The 16 inch MacBook Pro is here, and I ordered a base model to test out. In the past, the base model 15 inch MacBook Pro has been a tough one to recommend, with lesser graphics, puny storage, they just felt lacking in some way. The new 16 inch MacBook Pro changes things...

I like that you analyzed the low end MacBook Pro 16" rather than a maxed out one that most of us can't afford. To know that this one bests a maxed one from the prior gen is a very convincing sell point.
The mid tier upgrade actually costs a grand less than what Luke paid for his iMac Pro 5K! At that price, its a value. Some people would want to keep the difference in their pocket. And because modern Macs can’t be upgraded after market, it makes sense to buy the specs you think you might need later now than be stuck with the base model that doesn’t anticipate possible future needs.
If you’re going to keep your Mac with you, an upgrade won’t hurt and if you do sell it, it will hold its value well.
I feel so sorry for everyone who bought a 2019 15" model in the last month.
Al van der Laan i knew this was coming but didnt want to wait especially since I didnt want to pay so much for what would be a machine I’d only use for ios development... so got a 2012 mac mini 16gb memory, 512gb ssd... $500.
I just bought one (picked up on Nov 6), saw the news on Nov 12, went back to Apple and returned the 15" and now I am waiting on the 16 :D
EDIT: P.s. I saved money by doing that and I even took it up to 1 TB rather than 512 GB.
A lot of them can probably return it.
If they bought it in the last month they can return it. The ones I feel bad for are the ones who bought it just over a month ago.
I bought mine in August. Fuck me.
Who wants to see a 14" MBP with the same upgrades?!
I just don't see a 14" being capable enough to be a pro machine no matter the upgrades... the form factor is amazing, but it comes at a performance cost.
Owen Perry In comparison, I think the 13 inch sells more so I can surely see Apple releasing a 14 inch next year.
What’s the SSDs Performance like? Are they the same as the 15 inch predecessor?

In short, yes.
The 5300M emasculates the Vega 20 for $800 less and you get double the storage for free.
Vablo Who cares about the Vega 20 being in an IMac? This is about comparing Macbooks.
@@vablo7198 xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Vablo While not really a discussion for this video, there’s nothing wrong with using a MacBook for that workflow. Not everyone wants to be tied to a desk for their work. Is it the most efficient? Probably not. Does that make it wrong or a mistake? Absolutely not.
Vablo looks like you got creamed on
@@vablo7198 "The vega 20 will absolutely cream the rx 5300M when cooled properly" Except you're comparing them inside of a laptop from a company who is infamous for poor thermal design. Perfect video! I have a top-of-the-line late 2013 MBP that’s been serving me well for all these years, so great that you were able to directly compare the new model with that one. In 2020, I think it’ll be time to upgrade. Thank you!
2:00 - Got my MBP 16 today and "Cut baby carrots" is absolutely spot on.
This proves that Apple can do really great things when they actually give a shit.
If they gave “a shit” they would return it to upgradable memory and SSD - like it once was.
@marian roberto Jack, ironically Mac book pro is the only apple product worth buying from their entire lineup.

@McBossBrine I am frustrated by my surface book which costed 2400 USD 4 yrs back. The screen is still the best that I have ever looked at, but it has a dual-core i7 with sloppy stereo speakers. On top of everything, Windows crashes every once in a while. And the battery just sucks. I just want everything to JUST WORK, instead of me being annoyed every once in a while by some teeny-tiny glitches. At least, Apple knows how to build a laptop that just works for its customers, instead of just throwing in fancy pieces of shit that wont even last long.

Fark! I love your vids. You seems to have one for every Mac ever made, so I always just go straight to your channel whenever I have so much as a mothertrucking idea of buying a Mac.
Thanks Luke!
Brilliant video! I've been looking for detailed comparisons between 15"/16" Macbook Pro's from different years, most other RUclipsrs don't seem to understand that 99% of people won't be upgrading from the early 2019/2018 models... not everyone can afford $2500 every year, I myself have the top spec 2015 15", and I can FINALLY justify upgrading now, no more horrible keyboard, thermals, bad graphics, stupid costs for 1TB of storage etc etc... Seriously impressive review!
Finally I can replace mi Retina MBP from Early 2013 which has been the most reliable laptop I’ve ever owned.
I felt like this video was made just for me.
I’ve had a Mac since the mid 2014 version and I’ve been tempted each year to upgrade.
Looks like it’s time!
Brilliant video, thanks!

thanks for reviewing the entry level. I'm so sick of you tubers only reviewing the top of the line which isn't a realistic option for most buyers.
first time coming across your video and it surprised me how good it is. I didn't know you'd dive this deep (with benchmarks and tests) judging from the video title alone so maybe make it more apparent and more people can see how great this channel actually is. cheers!

THANK YOU for including the older Retina Pros. You were spot on, I have a 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, which, after running it at 100 degrees Celsius basically daily since I've bought it, still works fine. However, what used to be fast back then, ain't fast no more, so I'm looking to upgrade. Thanks again! 😊

Thank you thank you thank you. I say again, thank you. Best and most helpful review I have found and certainly helped my decision making. Perfect comparison to an older macbook too, which is super relevant. Alot of other reviews focus on the top end 16" model, with jacked up RAM, so not a relevant comparison. Slick editing and you left all the pertinent info in and delivered quickly. And I laughed at the jokes too. Thanks man! New sub!
Always pertinent/good take on everything
Now I’m tempted to save up for this one when I initially planned on saving up for the 15 inch 256 GB Macbook Pro lol
Same price, better specs, why not!!
Bryan G. Wait, it’s the same price as the 256 GB??? Niiiice
Justin M. From what I could see yes. Unless you are going used.
I have the late 2013 Macbook pro and i was wondering if the new 16" was the same size. Thanks for pointing that out! Your the only youtuber who is comparing this macbook to the old retna macbooks! Vary helpful thank you!
Exactly the same MacBook I have used since and haven’t replaced that with this 16inch, I can see a big jump in performance and so on .
I had a 2013 MBP and replaced it with a new 16”. They are for all practical purposes the same size. Like a few hundredths of an inch different in each dimension, and about 0.1lbs difference in weight. You’d never notice the difference except side by side. So glad I waited until they made a laptop with a keyboard included.
@@jmcminn1076 I have a late 2013 MBP too, and this 16" is the first I've actually thought of getting in the last 5+ years. You think it's worth it?
@@paullynch4021 yes I do. This new 16" is finally a good MacBook again. I am loving mine. With a real power button and escape key, the touch bar is even growing on me. I got the 8 core i9/1TB SSD SKU rather than the entry one, but the entry one is a 6 core i7 and 512GB SSD, and would also make a damn fine computer. My only reservation on recommending it is actually that it won't run newer OS X than Catalina, which means if you rely on any 32bit software (such as Aperture), adjusting to Catalina can be a painful chore. In my case this laptop is a secondary machine to my desktop Mac Pro, so the forced Catalina upgrade is a dry run, but if you use a MacBook as your main computer, be aware of the 32 bit software deprecation in Catalina.
lacey rae physically the same size as mi Retina MBP from early 2013. That’s he meant.
Your review so much better than others . thanks!
I have still got my Late 2015, but now finally, I think it is time to upgrade, thanks for the video !
Thank you for comparing it to the older Retina's, you NAILED EXACTLY my current curiosity on if I should upgrade from my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). However, I may just wait to see if WiFi 6 and the next gen Intel CPU's make it into next years update (which I am hoping they do). Nevertheless, you really are making content that applies to me, so great work on knowing your audience!

I'm glad I found your channel. I loved this review. I'm upgrading from a 2014 13 inch baseline MacBook Pro to the 16 inch which is gonna be like night and day. I'm most likely gonna get the base model and get the RAM and graphics upgrades.
Apple gave up on "Pro" meaning professional when they went to soldered on memory and hardware storage protection so it can't be upgraded. I don't necessarily mind the port selection, professionals will probably have it docked when they want to use more than a flash drive anyway.
That’s the reason I’m not upgrading. Apple’s anti repair mindset is so funny it sucks. They took steps to ensure more efill waste. Then you hear Tim Cook talk about Apple’s contribution to environmental awareness. Oh really? He might want to go look in the mirror.

Hi Luke, asked this before but when and for how much do you think the 13"/14" mac is ?
I watched your review on the trashcan Mac Pro the other day, which was great. I had this pop-up in my recommended videos and was extremely useful. Most other reviewers do direct comparisons to the 15" 2019 model, but I appreciate your comparisons to older models too (pre butterfly). I'm coming from a mid-2014 pro and I think I'm gonna upgrade. It’s 14 days. The last gen is literally too bad so pleeeeeease return it.
The “base model” for $2,399 does “”””not”””” come with 1TB of storage like you said in this video, it comes with 512GB of storage.
The mid-range "base model" (standard config) does come with 1TB, thats the model I purchased. But it is the $2799 model.
That is correct. However he is talking about the $2,399 one in this video. That one does not come with 1TB like he said. He is wrong and I wanted to point that out so there is no confusion.
Thanks for the comparison! I have an early 2013 15” MBP retina. Most other reviewers see the performance improvement marginal from last year (rightfully so), but I’d bet most users neither upgrade MacBooks annually nor have reviewer specs/budgets. Great job on the video :)
