The reason Austin loves the 2013 Mac Pro is because when his apartment burnt down, a bunch of tech youtubers came together and gifted him one. It was a super heartwarming video and I recommend you watch it.
i remember...
Wonder if he still has that iPad.
That was the first time I got introduced to Austin

I agree with what they said in the vid. I would love that design to return with an M series chip in it and updated io
Cheap and Apple don't usually exist in the same sentence 😂

With the iMac, you can upgrade the HDD to ssd. Just did the same with our 2013 model for about £40 and it flies now
I bet it runs better since it has a Solid State Drive instead of a hard drive
@@CritScout152 yeah it's gone from 3-4 minute boot to 40ish seconds. Apps launch really quick now. Given that we've had it since 2013, it's nice to get a few more years out of it 👍
I currently use a M.2 Drive that is 1 terrabyte
@@CritScout152 I have 64gb you wish you were me
i wish i could upgrade mine but the screen is cracked and i'm afraid it might get worse if i try to open it
Sounds like Matt needs his own channel.
This Is
And STAY in his own channel...
This is a travesty that he doesn't have a channel yet
Meh 0/10 wouldnt watch
@@PokeMan69 Cringe, Matt is the Golden Boy
Almost every Apple product I've had has basically been a hand-me-down or purchased used -- 5 years old is kinda the sweet spot for price and longevity. You can usually squeeze a little more life out of them past that (Ex. OpenCore Legacy Patcher, older app support on iOS, etc) but before long you start needing/wanting more features and better performance.
iPhone 5s was me, I could have gotten a lot more life out of it but it got water damaged. iPhone SE 2 now, used
The white part on the back is probably the Apple personalization being 'removed' i.e. The iPad of Matt
12:57, that's a spot on advice for buying an ipad. I bought a 2017 ipad pro 12.9 gen2 in 2019, I'm still using it today and it works great. Use it for notes, videos and browsing when a laptop isn't needed and if it weren't for the touch screen issues that came up recently, could easily get a few more years out of it.
I used that similarly specked MacBook Pro until a year ago. It was usable for very basic stuff.
RIP THE IPOD …. YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED
Matt has that wise uncle vibes. Ken is the geek. Austin....is the youngest sibling who cries at Toys R Us.
You can tell this comment before This Is went REALLY unhinged. Austin is often the only real adult in the room, and that includes Kinsey and Aron 😂
I'm still pissed that not only has Apple discontinued the iPod touch but the most recent one won't even get iOS 16. That seems like adding insult to injury considering I think that versions only been out for about 2 to 3 years. I mean ouch.
It's actually easy to upgrade the OS with opencore legacy patcher. I've done it on a bunch of old macs and they all run fine.
I installed monterey to 2008 imac with SSD upgrade and it stll 100% usable for media consumption, browsing the web etc.
I still use a 13" mid-2012 MBP, great lil machine. You can add up 16GB of RAM, as well as replace the disc drive with a 2nd SSD. Supports a 2nd display with a TB2 -> HDMI adapter.
Joanna makes these videos hilarious 😂
i love this type of matt and austin content!
I never thought i would see cheap and apple in the same sentence lmaoo
The increase in iPod collecting is most likely due to the RUclipsr Dankpods who is actually amazing.
not gunna lie, 225 for that iMac is a goooood deal.
The imac is upgradeable if you are brave enough to take the screen off. I've just changed out a hdd to ssd on a late 2012 iMac (same chassis) and it's night and day difference, and actually usable now!
The reason ipods are so collectable is actually pretty dank...
I have a late 2015 iMac and to make it faster I'm booting macOS from an external solid-state drive. It's much faster now and easier than trying to open the iMac.
it would be interesting to see if its possible to update these devices with another OS other than Apple OS so that they can actually be useful beyond what Apple thinks it should be.
I have a first gen Macbook Air that I put Pop O/S on after watching a recent LTT video, I can't remember why exactly, but its zippy AF now. I've also got a 2003(or 5) Macbook 2,1 too that I'm gonna probably put a different Linux flavour on just to learn more.
You can patch these with Ventura once its out just find the forums people are able to get these to install the latest os even when not supported. I have a 2013 imac that i patched Monterey on and it not officially supported by apple. Its runs it great!
Project Sandcastle existed, it brought android to legacy iphones
It's Intel, so you can install Linux on the iMac. I'm not sure if both GPUs would be supported on the trash can Mac.
I mean with macs you could always try linux and that would probably be more supported and faster than whatever the latest version of macos an outdated mac can use is BUT since apple silicon came out, linux still isn't an option for those. Asahi linux is being developed for them, but it's still not complete enough to be considered usable imo
Austin: Cheap Apple products
Ordinary person: i would kill for an Apple product
Hope ur having a nice day and love your content. Keep it up 👍
that lil jon WHAT! got me rolling on the floor 😂😂😂😂
good episode! always so proud of you 🙂
Missed u guys
12:25. That was engraved with a fiber laser. We have the same laser Apple uses and engrave AirPods, AirTags, etc. We can also remove engraving on devices, and we just engrave away the aluminum and make a rectangle like that.
Yay Matt and ken are back
That etching is where the serial and authenticity info usually reside but my guess is to remove it from apple based warranties
Nope, that's where apple does the engraving. It most likely had a schools or company's info on it. The refurbisher then used an industrial laser cnc to etch the area removing it.
Also fair. I just know on my iPad it has the imei and “genuine apple product” which is technically illegal to sell due to some court crap awhile back if it goes through customs and says genuine apple product or has the logo it has to be royaltied or confiscated. But also referbs generally aren’t allowed within the apple care program despite how new the device may be.
so strange to see the old recording studio since they moved to the new one 😂
apple and cheap are never words I thought I would hear together
Love the content ❤️
Expecting this video to just be empty as everything they make is expensive 😂😂
I love these videos! I love it when the crew gets to be apart of the video too! Get the crew to be apart of the videos more! :)
1st gen ipad doesn't have a retina display, that was added on 3rd gen ipad
1:56 lmaooo the fist bump
I love my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, which I upgraded with a 500 GB 870 EVO SSD and 16 GB of RAM. I kept it at Mojave so I can run 32-bit applications and games.
I also love your enthusiasm for the 2013 Mac Pro, which I still desperately want to get.
Back when Austin's apartment burnt down back in 2014 with most of his tech and other belongings, a bunch of tech RUclipsrs came together and bought him a 2013 Mac Pro. Super wholesome video if you get the chance, but I reckon that's one of the reasons why he likes the 2013 Mac Pro so much.
@@mjesticfalco
That's a really sweet story. Given those circumstances, I can certainly understand Austin's affection for this computer. :)
How am I just finding this channel !!! New fan for sure!!!
Wise words from Matt!
Also miss the brightness of the "old" set.
With an SSD, OpenCore Legacy Patcher is 100% worth it to get Monterey on the 2012 unibody.
It has metal capable graphics so it will run perfectly fine!
Love the Genny shirt Matt!
Austin always makes me laugh
Ayee Matt reppin' the ROC!
that iPad Air is VERY likely a fleet iPad, aka, a school iPad. That white spot location lines up almost perfectly with the engraving that school districts put on those things. Those engravings were laser etched into the back for some reason so unless they swapped the shell, they weren’t getting it off.
I have been using an iPad Air 2 since 2014!
mac pro 2013 cost in my area around $800 on used market and amazon canada has one for $1,500
I still have my original iPad Air, albeit it is no longer my main tablet. Pretty much the only thing that still works well is RUclips. Something I would have been interested to see is all of the cheapest products purchased directly from Apple rather than Amazon, as with that you are getting products that will still be supported for hopefully a few years.
The iPad would have originally had an engraving on the back like you can get when you buy new from Apple. They etched out that rectangle as a way of “erasing” the engraving
Matt was spitting facts this whole episode
The ipad was probably personalized (engraved) and they etched or lasered off that area to remove it.
That’s what I do with my kids iPads. Always buy the newest cheapest one so it lasts them a few years.
The bigger guy is gasping for air after doing small tasks damn
The Ipad air that you got. the smooth mark is actually from a Laser etching machine wich they must have used to take away or hide any "anti-theft" markings or the marking of someone's name on the device. the same kind of laser wich is used to take away the back glass panel on Iphones can be used for the same thing.
10:05 “absolutely not young man”😂😂
Love ur vids
Didn't you say up to date OS on that iMac? Because Catalina is old, they have 2 whole versions newer than that. Current Version would be 12.5 Monterey, not 10.15.
wow they went back in time
Matt rocking the Genny t-shirt! I’m originally from Buffalo, NY and had far too many Genny beers back in the day.
Was there a refurbished rating on anything? Purchased a few Apple products through EBay and they rate the quality so you can pick something in the condition you require.
I think the cheapest apple products are the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter and the Lightning/USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapters. I actually have USB-C to 3.5 mm Adapter, it didn't even cost 10 bucks. Very high quality, it sounds very noticeably better than many others.
I love all the new features with the 14! I have an unboxing of my white iPhone 13 pro max over on my channel... I'll most likely upgrade next year and go with the black iPhone 😏
lolol 6:13 is my favorite part
Mack did not let Austin talk lol.
You can use an external SSD as the main drive. Works great.
1:55 the way she missed the fist bump 😭
matt was on point this episode
‘I’m glad my mom died book’ @0:15 🤣🤣🤣🤣
4:16 I got one of those w/ i7… I upgraded to 1 TB SSD & 16GBs of RAM… it’s showing it’s age but it was great for 2012.
when he said let me go to the bast channel i immediately got a commercial of mrwhostheboss🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is incredibly frustrating to use an iOS or iPadOs device that is no longer supported because a lot of apps cannot be installed so I would steer clear of older iPads. For $209, you can get an Apple refurbished 7th Gen iPad. There are 2017 iPads for less than $130 on eBay.
It’s a bit better if you used a device around that time as you can reinstall older versions of apps if you previously had that version installed. I wish they start doing it like macOS doe it where if you download the latest version on a newer Mac you can download the latest compatible version on and older Mac. I’ve done it by downloading the latest apple productivity apps on my Mac Mini running Monterey and then I downloaded the older version on a Mac running Snow Leopard.
loved seeing that first gen IPAD AIR since i still use mine that i bought new when they came out. i use my ipad pro (WAAAAY NEWER) more though.
You can upgrade the ram on the iMac but that’s about it. And with that model you have to remove the screen and basically all the internals. Did it a few years back only casualty was I lost the headphone jack lol
If you just slap an SSD in the iMac and use a patcher for the next MacOS versions, that thing still has years of use to offer. We don't seem to get such good deals in Europe
******** Ok. I don't know much about computers. I watch Austin, Ken, This Is, and Linus. I'm slowly getting the hang of it, but I gotta say..... That Mac/trashcan thing looks sick AF! With modern technology, updated components (a lot of people getting into that minimalist style) I think they should bring that back out!!!! Brushed mate stainless, with RGB inside, that glows out of the top and around the bottom!!?? 👌
Thank You
yo, how are you back at your old studio??!. But anyways love this studio.
"EAR CRABS!"
Matt said as a crab raved around his ear.
The skin was so funny, I used to sell 2010 unibody MacBooks and spent good time re-finishing the lids, then while searching for donors or candidates I'd see those big seller listings with just a ton of pre-applied skin options XD
I personally don’t mind if the lid is scratched or dented a bit, as long as it works and as long as the seller makes sure to note the damage in the listing.
1:10 NOOO AUSTIN! DON'T MAKE ME REMIND THIS PAIN AGAIN!!!
would be intering to see you do a cheap amazon laptop show off
Shoutout to Matt for the Genesee Brewing shirt!!
From Western NY, I have to give a +1 props to the Genesee Brewing Company t-shirt Matt is rocking...
I have been using 2012 macbook pro retina 15 inch for 10 years now. I still prefer that one over the newest M1 14 inch MacBook pro 2021. (For general use though)
I have never seen the garbage can before and I am so saddened by the lack of foresight/testing it suffered. That motherboard is just gorgeous.
i pad probably had one of those custom messages etched in the back and they used a laser to blast the anodization off to erase it
I got an 27” iMac in 2013. Back when you could still access the ram on back. Right before the 5K one or whatever they came out with that was higher than 1080. I fully upgraded everything I could when I ordered it and guess what, that thing is still going strong. Cost me $3000 then but I’ve definitely got my moneys worth. It’s not slow or anything yet. It’ll be sad when it no longer works well.
I still have my 160gb iPod classic and it’s going strong. Have an 80gb that’s iffy. Might mod it to use micro SD and expand the storage. Shame that beautiful tech just isn’t practical now with my AirPods or car or whatever. Plus my iPhone holds more than it anyway.
12:10 someone probably got it engraved and then when amazon refurbished it they did that to get rid of the engraving
oh, I still have an ipod touch lying here somewhere!
Lol looks like we got an little bit of an tech rewind⏪⏪
I still daily drive an iPad Air 1 to this day since 2015, hasn’t failed me once. Though for Google apps, I have to download on old version because the latest doesn’t support iOS 12.5.6
I have two classic ipods that I repaired and they work great
Id say that spot on the back of the iPad is probably something they did to remove the etching you can get from Apple, right?
I'm watching this on a mid 2012 MacBook Pro... had it for years... I still wouldn't recommend getting it right now lol
man dabbed in 2022, let that sink in
Shocked the items still work after 2 years.
"oooookay"
I’m genuinely convinced 2012 MacBooks are immortal. Never owned one personally but I’ll just see people casually on them with 75 chrome tabs open
That’s Pam Beesly behind the camera, nobody’s gonna convince me otherwise.
I have a mid 2012 MacBook and it runs plenty fast. I put in an ssd and 8 gigs of ram.
