Honestly, the whole "you can get an equivalent Windows laptop for much cheaper" argument is shrinking. Top quality Windows laptops (Lenovo Thinkpad, Dell XPS, etc.) cost nearly the same as this, and sometimes they cost even more. With the improved specs at base configuration, the 16" MBP is looking like the most reasonably priced MBP of all time.

Ford sells the Continental. Mercedes sells the 5 class. Ford sells the Festiva. There is no cheap Mercedes. There is no cheap Mac...and no CHEAP Windows laptop is as good.

Definitely a good laptop. Still can't get used to lack of USB A ports. Also, I'd say the worst quality of the laptop is that it comes with Catalina installed. Catalina is one of those major "upgrades" that can cause a lot of problem with older plug ins and software. (Thanks Apple for the quarantine process!) Catalina is just not ready for prime time yet IMO.
Good review Saf. Btw, I use Sidecar with my 13” MBP and an iPad Air. Works well, doesn’t require the iPad Pro anymore.

Got to agree, it’s an incredible laptop. I upgraded from the original MacBook Pro 15” retina model from 2012 that had got too slow (not bad for an 8 year old laptop to still be able to run Catalina though!), so the keyboard wasn’t too much of an issue for me, but the larger trackpad is actually a great change.
Four USB-C ports is a great boon as well, much rather have that than the two USB-A ports, separate HDMI and charging port and card reader slot. Four multi-use ports is far more flexible, even if initially I need to replace previous cables and get some adapters or possibly a dongle. The card reader would be a nice to have for my photography work, but my camera came with a USB-C to SD card reader adapter that I can use either with an iPad or the MacBook Pro anyway. And the camera supports Wi-Fi transfers, so really even that isn’t strictly necessary.
The side car feature is great as well - very useful. Not unique for the 16” MBP, of course, but it is a great feature.
But I must admit I was very surprised that the camera is not appreciably better in image quality than the 2012 MBPr... I think that was the only thing that I’ve experienced so far that was a disappointment.
Got any recommendations for dongles? There is such a bewildering array of them...
Hoping to buy this (base model) next week .. very excited... only hope the adobe suite works well on it .. and I’m totally with you regarding the charging on both sides .. and the whole dragging the cable around

Clearly this MacBook Pro must be immensely popular because every youtuber has done a reveal., A review., A week later review, And a month later review. Clearly getting a lot of views and likes. I bought one the other day and it’s awesome. The one thing I did compare though that reviewers fail to mention is the new Pro 16in is the exact same size and weight almost to the “T” as the retina 15in 2012-2015 but still slightly smaller and lighter than that model. Apple did a great job because no one thought that was big and the bigger screen essentially means it’s smaller. Love it.

Because of the butterfly keyboard problems that I had with my 2017 Macbook pro, I could convince Apple to replace my computer with a 2020 brand new Macbook pro! It took me 3 month to get my new computer and I am so happy with my new computer!

I think it's important to let people know that you will get better battery life if you use the build in browser safari. Other nice things you will get if you use safari is more privacy and Apple Pay support.
had to get a more powerful MacBook for school, just kinda sent it and ordered this one. the cost hurts, but if its still running flawlessly in 7-8 years like my 2012 its worth not having to worry.

I just got myself a 2018 15 inch MacBook Pro just about a few months ago & I think I'll stick with it until it stops working but so far I'm impressed with what Apple has done with this year's MacBook Pro 💻 👍
I have the 2018 15inch too, it's a great computer ( the soldered on SSD scares me a little though, it'll be a very expensive doorstop if it fails in a couple of years ) I'm moving more into VFX and 3D work though and for that it just doesn't cut it ( mainly because of Apples non support of Nvidia Cards and them dropping Open GL and CL support ) the new 16" won't do much to address this issue, neither would a Mac Pro so I have a new studio computer ordered and on its way. For the first time in 20 + years it's not an Apple.
The butterfly keyboard is a mess, yesterday I received my new 16 MBP and honestly I almost forgot what a good typing experience was😂, in my 15 MBP with butterfly I used to get some characters duplicated, others would simply not be typed randomly and writing code was a pain, of course I bought an external keyboard to ease the pain but right now I'm happy writing in my 16 in MBP
Im currently looking for a laptop that would suffice for Final Cut Pro editing. Based off your video, I’m assuming I should have the laptop connected to a charge cord to keep it alive?
How does the Retina Display hold up after a few months? Scratches easily, needs a screen protector? This is important for visual content creators as scratches or discoloration can interfere with the editing.

how did u get more than 8 hours on light use? my new refurbished MacBook 16 inch each charge does not even last me 4 hours ( no pro applications running and I made sure it's on integrated GPU)
For most people who want charging on a plane a phone fast charger is the way to go. It'll be smaller, more portable and will give enough power to keep you running. Granted you won't get far video editing but makes for a great alternative. My 13" MBP runs typically between 6 and 8 hours so what type of flight am I getting on where 30-45W wouldn't be sufficient to get me to my destination? FWIW I use the 45W charger for the Samsung Note 10 as this will charge my MBP, S10, XS and S5e if/when needed without having to mess about other than an extra lightning cable for the iPhone XS.
Hi so i just got the macbook pro 16” I9 model last week. But it lasts for only 2-3 hours for casual browsing and typing on word. Is this normal in the beggining?

Hows the battery life dude, hows your experience with the device generally
Well, if you do heavy video editing and code compilation then forget about the battery! Like it lasts for me maximum 3 hrs. If I use it as a normal person like browsing the web, music and documentation etc. it will easily go to 9-10 hrs.
I can only complain about one and only one thing which is the webcam because I do Skype sometimes which is not a great experience. I rate this laptop 9.5/10 and I am coming from a fully maxed out 2016 MacBook Pro 13” which I give that one 6/10 due to power difference. Hope that helped buddy

I been really tempted to buy a Mac, but my problem with it is spending $2500(base model) on a laptop that I can't update the RAM or SSD drive on it later to extend it's life a few years down the road.
Ideally, the thing to do is buy an upgraded model, but I don't have over $3k to spend on one either.

It’s a good laptop, but I’d like an upgraded front camera, matte black, LTE, & even thinner bezels (ref Dell’s XPS) to upgrade over the previous model. Maybe push it to 16.5.
SOOOO bad about the crummy camera on the 16" MBP. 720! OK. Cam can you suggest a decent upgrade in the form of a clip on or a stand beside on a tripod large or small? Used with much lower price and higher quality would be welcome! I saw your 2017 video on the RUclips you and your friends use. Update? I actually really like the 16:10 aspect ratio for watching videos and movies. Why? Well, if I put this video in full screen on my MBP and pause it, all the video controls are on that black bar at the bottom where they are all easily visible and don't cover anything up. The title of the video appears in the top black bar and also doesn't cover anything up. If I turn on the captions, they mostly appear in the bottom black bar and only end up covering a little bit of the bottom of the image. When I do the same on my Windows gaming laptop, the image takes up the whole screen, but then the title, video controls, and captions all end up on top of the image.
I used it myself and this thing is amazing , almost everything about it is amazing except the webcam and no sd card reader port.

I purchased the i9 with 8gb of graphics and 32gb of ram. 3300$ USD. Small discount through the education store (3050$) and free airpods (or 159$ off an AirPod upgrade). I added the AirPod pros for 90$ Small discount on AppleCare+ (20%). Paid a total of around 3700$ USD. Arrives on Tuesday.

I plan to buy a 16 inch MBP in the next few days. I'm surprised that you bought yours with 16gb ram. Almost all RUclipsrs say that 32gb is the minimum the people should go for, for future proofing mainly.
I currently don't do any video editing but plan to do it in the future. But they will be simple videos, 4k at the most.
What's your recommendation in terms of the ram size?
32 minimum. I dont edit. I develop with 2 external monitors with 1080p. And i used nealy 14 gb ram. And i didnt do anything heavy.

The only complaint I have is the lack of number pads. I don’t want that absolute best speakers on a laptop coz all in all those are still laptop speakers. I’d like to see Apple making use of the extra space to include a number pad.

Just got this week my 16" macbook and my battery is draining quick while plugged-in when im playing some games or when doing benchmark tests.. for example if i started playing a game with 80% while the mac is charging, then after 1 hr the battery would be at 70% ... do you think that's normal or should i should get it replaced?
Are you using the original cable? ...or one that is rated for power of the charger.
It just came into my mind that you _might_ be limited in the power supply by an after marked cable.
How are you gaming on it? Do you stick to the MacOS Games or did you install BootCamp?
I ordered mine this weekend and I also want to play some games on it. I‘ll use BootCamp and Windows once I figured out what to look out for while setting up BootCamp.
One thing that I need to find out is what is actually true:
• games can be installed on any/also MacOS participation of the SSD
• or only on the Windows participation
... if last is the case I‘ll probably get myself an external SSD to run my games from there of, because I don’t want the Windows participation to be unnecessary big.
@@herrkeks8509 I'm using the original cable and power supply of course, and it happens in both OS, bootcamp and Mac OS... but right now it's not draining as much as it was before, don't know why .... about the games.. you can only install them on the bootcamp partition or a external drive...you should make the bootcamp partition like 47 GB witch is enough for windows and install all ur games on a external ssd so you can have more space on your Mac partition.

No. If you like windows and it’s working for you...there are great windows laptops to choose from. Don’t expect a cheap windows laptop to be as good as the Mac. But spend “Mac money” on a good Windows laptop and you’ll be fine.

64gb ram from the normal 16gb ram is a huge bump. It’s be blazing fast. Is it?
Memory is like headroom. The more you have the better.. but in most cases 16GB is sufficient. Like if you open 25 apps at the same time then 32GB would let you do that. 64, on the other hand would probably be double that of the 32GB in terms of open programs.
What makes it blazing fast is... a high speed processor and 32GB memory coupled with a high /read writing speed SSD.
In all honesty, 8GB is the bare minimum. 16 give a bit more breathing room. 32 is the sweetspot. 64 is next level (abeit the price today). Most programs today don't use any more than 3-6GB of memory( each program out there has its own memory requirements) But if you account for how much the system uses for its own needs, how many programs you have open, then having a computer with at least 32Gb of memory is great.

This laptop has loads of problems with playback of youtube videos, tons of cracks and slight skipping during music playback
You lost me at 16x10. Trust me, I'm a VFX Supervisor and Artist and MacBooks have been 16x10 for sooo many years. I know because often I am told to put 16x9 footage in a blank image of a MacBook pro so yeah, they've always been that aspect ratio. I was enjoying the video until then and made me question everything else. I am like that when I don't know the reviewer. I just bought the 16 decked out and I am just curious about general feelings out there. My audio stuff is making it so I have to run Windows too to make sure I can use all my hardware and some plugins that are 32 bit and always will be so I bought a 4TB so I can run both systems. Anyway, yeah, if you didn't know that, I had to move on. I like your clean set up and you're definitely not dumb, but I question how well you know the machines if you didn't know that. If I'm wrong, sorry but I don't think so unless someone had a 16 like 7 months ago on set. Yeah, just googled it, they have always been 16x10. I won't hit dislike but speak of what you know. The problem with social media. It's not TV, these aren't always pros. You're smart, and I appreciate your thoughts, but unlike the C-Net reviewer of this 16x10 MacBook, you just sort of feel like a dude I am chatting with about a MacBook and we know the same or maybe I know more even but I care about your concerns. Like I totally agree with you that they should have come with a different color. It actually makes me wonder if they aren't planning on dropping something next that will be huge. After the 13, I think they are going to jump to Enterprise, full portable workstation quality machines like that are out there for Windows systems. I mean, it's like having a jet engine on your lap but with horrible Windows systems, they can use RTX2080s and realtime previews with Refshift Engine in C4D. The new MacTower has that capability. It's so powerful and I think the MacBook it trending that way. If bench the speeds from last years model and the base model here with even single cpus they have doubled in some places. From the old max to the new min. I think they are gong to come hard and strong and expensive and they are going to want to let people know they have the WHATEVER and thats when we will see new colors like gold and black on the Pros. I'll stick with the grey silver though but rendering in realtime for some 3D. :) Did I ramble? sorry.

I returned my MacBook on the last day returnable. The battery drains too fast and it gets over heated when it connects to external display(UltraFine 5K). The CPU usage keeps at 60% when idle.
how does battery drain when ultrafine charges it while plugged in?

One month ago I was in the Apple store testing the feel of it. The screen is bigger, but I hardly work on my laptop screen. The keyboard is nice but my 2017 just was repaired and worked fine. The rest is basically the same. Actually, I thought the keyboard was worse than a 2019 15" model, but that is because I am so used to the butterfly keyboard. I think it would take me maybe two days to get back to a little more key travel. The main reason I did not go forward with the purchase is the price. Here in Canada, the pricing of a model similar to my 2017 would be close to 3400 before taxes and apple-care. I had a customer who wanted a decent 15" laptop but did not want to spend too much, I did sell them my 2017 and mainly because I knew it was flawless and had about 80 days left of warranty on the repair that was done. I ended up purchasing a brand new 2019, 15" MBP, but it is the base model. Hexacore and 16Gb are more than plenty for my use and sure the 250Gb SSD is not enough for lots of content creators and I just scratched the surface with 206Gb available. What drew me, more than anything, to this unit is the price. For CAD $2400, taxes and AppleCare+ included for a brand new, sealed laptop is not something I will pass up on. The laptop is fantastic to be honest, no overheating, nice and quiet and exactly what I wanted.

Hey Saf, great review, love your work. I recently bought this 16 MacBook pro. i9 16GB Memory and 1T SSD. One thing I noticed is that the battery life is really bad. One day I went to work at 9 and by 11:30 am, but battery life dropped from 100% to 44%. I was just browsing webs, doing emails and watch a few youtube videos. How did you test the battery life and what did you do during the 8-9 hours time frame? I thought something must be wrong with the specific one I got so I bought another one and it seems like it is about the same. I just got it this morning and started using it at 1:35 pm, now it's 3:37pm and the battery life is at 47%.

Why is everybody mentioning memory card readers? You can't plug in a mouse without a dongle, a hard-drive... and we talk about what happens if you need to edit a video and you can't find a dongle for your memory card?

Disagree that Apple makes their laptops lighter. They’re definitely heavier than most PCs, especially Lenovo. Never liked the aluminum build of MacBook pros, hope they find a different lighter material.
Is anyone else having issues with the battery life? I've had it for a couple months and the battery seems to drain waaay too fast. (not refurbished)

Definitely not making 11 hours on battery life over here.
