  • The MacBook Pro 16 is legit a powerhouse that really turned around Apple's fortunes in the laptop market space after the problems their 15 inch models ran into a couple of years ago.
But there has been a pretty big upheaval in the laptop market place over the last year so its time to find out, is it still worth buying in 2021?

I bought the current 16” 2 days ago and I’m very happy with it. I switched from a 2015 13”MacBook Pro. The main reason I went with the 16 over the new M1 13s is I have been using a 13inch MacBook for over 10 years and I wanted something that actually felt like an upgrade. Everything on the 16 is just bigger. The screen is bigger , the trackpad is bigger , the speakers are bigger (and much better). It felt like a noticeable jump. Also I’m not a power user. I will never use all the performance that this computer has. I bought it because I wanted a big laptop. It’s as simple as that. They really should make a 16” Air. I’m sure there’s more people than me that want a big screen for watching movies but don’t need a 12 core CPU to do it 😄

I just got a new 16 inch in 2021. As a software engineer, unless I am developing pure iOS apps, the M1 Macs are a non-option. Many of the apps, plugins and libraries I need simply do not run with anywhere near acceptable performance on Apple silicon, if they can even be run at all. This 16 inch will still be the go-to option for engineers probably for years to come.

i recently bought a 16, after getting tired of waiting for the silicon version (the battery on my 2015 retina was pathetic at this point, too, which pushed me). i don't regret it at all. if you're working a lot on the move, and only from a laptop, the bigger screen is really not a trivial difference. i could not do a full-time job, whilst mobile (i.e. without a desktop monitor set-up), from a 13 inch screen or with 2 usb-c ports. i'll look into the 'M1X' 16-inch silicon laptop in a year or two, and part-exchange the intel 16.
everyone is really excited about apple silicon, and deservedly so. but some of the breathless praise for the 13 inch M1's sometimes seems to forget that apple silicon is here to stay, and there will be many more models and future generations. i really don't see a good reason for a person accustomed to a 15/16 inch laptop to switch to the 13, just to have the latest and greatest tech for the 12 months that it's exclusive to the smaller model. as you rightfully say, the 2019 16-inch macbooks are still incredibly powerful and capable computers, and will be so for a few years yet.
for me, the crux of it is this: people are raving about the M1's performance, but forgetting the (arguably more important) factor of PRODUCTIVITY. sure, the 16 inch mac might be fractionally slower in benchmarks, but you're getting extra diagonal inches of screen space, extra ports, a better screen, more storage, loudspeakers, etc. none of those things show in an A/B benchmark comparison, but on a day-to-day basis, you have to actually live with them as a user. it matters. a machine helping your productivity is about so much more than the speed a safari page loads, or how quickly those renders/exports complete under 100% CPU usage.

    • @aaroninky
      @aaroninky 3 года назад +2

@Thijs Mulder absolutely, it's worth the wait! the battery on my retina was at the end of its life, which forced my decision now rather than waiting another 6 or 12 months.

I went from a 2012 architecture 13” MacBook Pro to this, and obviously I’m happy with the performance boost. I can finally edit videos without bogging, editing in Photoshop is so much faster and Lightroom (program I use the most) is wonderful and smooth, and it’s not optimized for M1 yet.
I had to create a calendar for the German Shepherd rescue I do photography for, on the 2012... with 180+ layers... it was painful.

I bought my 16 in September of 2020 knowing that the M1 would be coming out soon. I wanted the larger screen. If Apple silicon was being released in a larger screen this past year I would have waited. 13" is just too small for me.
I got the base model and pretty much that's all I really need, and it was $300 less than retail, sooooo.
I'm happy with the 16, no regrets.
After a few years go by and I see the development of Apple silicon advance, which it will, I'll consider getting a new MBP. This is only the first stage of development. You'll by then have a new video out saying why you shouldn't buy the MBP 13 with the M1 chip.
Until then its me and my 16.

I am not a power user. I just bought a 16" in top condition because of the fantasic screen, keyboard and tracpad. I just paid 11000 Norwegian crowns. That is less than 1050 USD. The battery count is only 120 cycles so there is a lot of juice left in this glorious machine. My last MacBook was a entry level Air M1. I don't need that power. But to be fair, the 16" inch is faster than a entry level m1 air in many scenarios. Another thing is the lousy number of external ports in the M1 air. Thank you for a great review. Keep up your good work. Thank you😃

M1 is not there yet...needs more fine tuning and more support from software/apps. They also need to perfect the encoders to that of Intel's or better but the encoders for rendering video causes subtle subtle banding and artifacts. You have to really look to see it but in a side by side of 4k Pro Res or s-Log you can see the differences between Intel MBP and M1 MBPs. Why is no one talking about this?

, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M (8GB GDDR6 memory installed), 32GB 2,666MHz DDR4 memory, 1TB SSD storage). I was using it for architecture and it was working quite smoothly and fast. However, 2 days ago with no apparent reason, it simply stopped turning on and working (only some weeks after the 1-year Apple warranty ended). I took it to the repair shop and they tried everything to revive it with no success. Now the price to fix it is 1300$ and will take 1 month. Feels like programmed obsolescence. My previous computer was a MacBook Pro 2012 that I used until last year with no issues at all. This one barely survived one year (and some weeks extra so that the warranty wouldn't cover any of the repair costs).

I bought it cause I didn’t think the M1 macs were gonna be this good, but luckily I was able to return it and get the M1 and I have ZERO regrets. The M1 macs are just night and day better if you’re looking for a laptop. It doesn’t overheat, multitasks better, opens apps faster, browses much faster, is much cheaper and has a way better battery life. It is just better in every single way (unless you like a bigger screen). As a science student, I use many programs like R, populous, excel, word etc, and this M1 Mac is a BEAST (especially now with online school and having to be in lots of Zoom conferences). The 16 inch would struggle with how many tabs and programs I had open but my M1 MacBook Pro makes it look easy.

There's been very little conversation in tech circles about when/if Apple will update this current MBP 16 configuration with Intel's latest i7-11370H. It looked like they would refresh the Intel Macs one last time when they made their announcement last summer. But, there hasn't been anything leak since, which is strange.

I would just save up to get the 16 inch Apple Silicon one. Intel is something that Apple is going to try phasing out quicker than normal so you cannot guarantee how much support you are going to have left in it. Also Intel macs have problems like throttling fan noise, and high power consumption which eats your battery. Therefore save up to get the newest 16 inch.

I'm still using my MacBook Pro 16 for working at home. I bought it when it was launched in 2019. It is a great computer and I have really thought about replacing it with one of the new M1 Macs instead. There are three main reasons I have not done that. The first is the extra two ports, the second is the larger display and the third is that the M1 MBP is not quite as high end and is missing some of the features I really like on the 16" MBP. The M1 is cool but I don't mind having a computer the size of the MBP 16 for travel given the larger display, and that the battery life is still pretty good. The M1 is fast but not faster than the i9 in my MBP 16. I will 100% get an Apple Silicon 16" MacBook Pro when such a device comes out. Until then, I am very happy using the intel laptop.

@@ioncekilledamanwithmyshoe the multi core performance of the I9 is about 15-20 percent better than the m1. The M1 demolishes the intel chip in single threaded workloads. For someone using the 16” MBP, the updated versions are still worth waiting for.

Great review. I think people need to understand that there is fan noise, and then there is MBP 16 fan noise. If you plan to turn this machine on at all, prepare for thunderstorms. I had some severe issues using this with an external monitor... We are talking nuclear power plant fans. I reset the SMC and that seemed to help, but holy smack.... Better not work with sound or video recording with this thing.
I recorded a pickup shot with my iPhone in one of my videos and it was dead silent. The second we got back to the shot where I used my MacBook in the background it was just sad... Other than that, it has done really well.

FYI, bootcamp on this machine with the top end specs is a better windows experience than most comparable windows systems. with the top end graphics card I can play whatever I want.
Might be worth noting that this is desktop replacement level hardware internals. If you have multiple computers, or a desktop already, you don't really gain much for paying the premium for this portability and power combo.

To put the usage into context, I don’t do massive projects, but to have the option of producing mid-large arrangements would be ideal. I also produce a podcast (trimming, post-prod, adding music etc.), some episodes go up to an hour and a half.

Ok, so from what I’ve seen, the 13” MacBook Pro with the M1 chip is good for bigger projects because it handles a lot more but you mentioned you don’t do big projects so it might not matter to you.
I personally have the MBP 16” and for me, screen size is quite important, especially when working an a project with something like Logic Pro X. From what I’ve seen, MBP with M1 chip can handle 90 tracks while the 16” can only handle 75 tracks, but for all my projects, 75 is more than enough for me.
So it kind of depends on what you prioritize more, a laptop that can handle a bit more (usually good for big projects) or a bigger screen size (if you’re not doing huge projects and you also would like the benefit of a big screen). Of course, a big screen isn’t the only benefit of the 16” MBP but some other benefits are also listed in the video.
Edit: oh, also I forgot to mention that the speakers the 16” has is just so much more superior which is important if you don’t use headphones when working and also when watching tv shows/movies (if you use headphones all the time you can disregard this).
