One would think I would stop watching these M1 MacBook related videos after having purchased one. But here I am, watching a video about a computer I have already bought, on said computer. I think I'm obsessed.
That’s me right now 🤷🏽♀️
Which model did you get?
@@AB-ff1cq I got the base model Air... 8GB, 256GB SSD.

@@BongGorres I absolutely love it. I'm still obsessed. I bought the base model Air because I have a feeling I'm going to end up on an upgrade train the first couple releases as Apple iterates on these Apple Silicon Macs rapidly. But even if that doesn't happen, I'm more pleased with this computer than any other I have bought or built in the last 40 years, and I have owned a lot of computers that I really liked.

Have been a MacBook Pro user for 14 years. Now bought the Air just minutes after it was announced and am loving it. 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, 8-Core GPU. The size, the weight, the battery life and the fan-less design make it simply amazing.
I bought a used M1 Air same specs as yours! It’s being delivered tomorrow, I can’t wait!
@@DJAJ101 is it good ?

The gap between Air and Pro has never been this small while the price difference pretty much stayed the same. The only way for me (poor student) to justify extra $300 would be a redesign of the Pro which is likely happening next year. But since that didnt happen this year, I just ordered M1 Air :)
5 months later I'm looking to get the M1 Air today. Just base model to do some basic mac and iOS development on. Out of the 3 things mentioned as the main differences only the 100 extra Nits brightness on the Pro is actually an advantage as I don't really rate the touch bar (having had a Mac with one previously.) and I prefer passive cooling on devices ever since I first got the 2017 Surface Pro i5
These devices are not made for poor people

This was really helpful, going with the air, but the 16gb of unified ram model for long term security.
Hey! Did same - receiving it next week 🤩🤩
Yeah, i think is the more sensible choice!
Same here....
Pls share your Expirence
Doin the same thing but I think ima slam a 1 TB in it
Another important factor you forgot to mention is that the M1 air comes with a 30W charger, while the M1 pro comes with a 61W charger 😉
Legit point, but keep in mind that it does not translate to 2 times faster charging. In fact it takes almost the same time to charge both Air and Pro. Of course Pro's battery is 16% bigger.
I think that 30W charger is awesome because it weights less and takes less space. I hate it that many manufacturers of compact/portable devices forget to mention how big and heavy their chargers are. Just look at Intel NUCs. 60w charger is bigger than the NUC itself 😭
@@JohnDoe-zc3fg the charger is another benefit of the Air to me it makes about 15 mins difference to charge time but you don't have to charge these too often
But then you can buy a 65 or 100 W third party charger and you still achieve the same charging rate
@@DanielHarrisCodes yeah 15 min is very small

thanks so much for this Gary! I just ordered a 16 gb MBA over the pro for many of the reasons you listed, thanks for the vote of confidence!
The brighter screen and touchbar is enough reason for me to chose the Pro.
@Glorious Wolf I really like the Touch Bar. I also forgot to mention the battery is much better.
@Glorious Wolf I use my current MacBook Pro usually on full brightness so a less bright screen would not be good for me.

I've been running my late 2010 Macbook Pro for about 5 years now. About 2 years ago I upgraded it to 16GB of RAM and a 256SSD and it greatly improved the performance, but with school going entirely online for now it is completely bogged down by everything I need to have running. I can't wait to upgrade to the M1 MBA. A decade of improved hardware should blow my mind when it comes to getting everything done.
Hi Gary, throughout the video you mentioned how similar the two choices were. At the end of the video you told us that your favourite pick would be the Air but, in your last sentence you say, "...but the Pro is probably more practical". Somehow I didn't get that vibe from the video; all I could take aways was, "They're similar, one is cheaper". What am I missing? Many thanks, as usual, great video.
You just convinced me to buy the Air! 😂

As a youtuber, the deal breaker was the "studio quality" microphones on the macbook pro. They are good enough that I no longer use an external microphone.
And then the fan kicks in and ruins your pristine recording.
@@jeremyhead7546 the fan barely turns on when using the M1 MBP believe it or not
@@iTristendo nice, but I'd rather it not kick in at all, so I bought an M1 MBA instead.
@@jeremyhead7546 if that matches your workflow that is fine. For me, the fan noise is so negligible that I can’t even tell it’s there. I prefer the fan for sustained loads when exporting videos and photo edits. Plus the MBP has that extra GPU core in the base model
@@iTristendo that's fair. I got the MBA with the 8 core GPU, isnt that what the MBP has too? Works great either way, made a few videos in it so far in Final Cut, much better experience than my 2015 MBP.

Wouldn’t the pro be good if you’re dealing with big data too
@@sahil203 if you want sustained performance under very heavy workload then you must for for pro as its fans will kick in
@@sahil203 Perhaps. If you need sustained performance. My main point is that most people are not "Pros" and therefore judging an entry-level Mac on how well it handles 4k video editing (or large sustained data sets) is irrelevant to them.
@@opinionator3884 Most people won't put the laptop under strain for that long - exception might be gaming. I occasionally play World of Warcraft and then the Air will throttle. Question is if it's worth going from the Air to the Pro and shelling out an extra $300 ($400 where I live) just for those fps/graphic settings... It's a big bump in price.
If somebody is worried about the heat because of no fan, just remember that the iPad Pro can edit 4K video with no fan, and doesn’t even get very hot
Imagine if they put a thunderbolt 4 port on it It will be awesome you can use it in the go and then connect it to a better monitor(I know you can know but with limitations) and a dongle for storage and stuff. And run mac os like a ,,desktop mode".

Both really amazing, having owned both however I do prefer the pro.
Personally I love the touchbar after installing various apps to make it more useful. I also love the design, the larger battery, the brighter screen will be helpful outside, the larger trackpad is nice, and I like that even though both of these macbooks have no issues with thermals, the MBP runs so much noticeably cooler to the touch which is amazing when using on a lap. All of these additions IMO make the MBP worthy of its price over the air, but the air is definitely an amazing laptop.
Apple really smashed it with these first gen M1's. Happy to be a part of the evolution (:
Question, the m1 air is in my budget range not the pro , but what really bothers me is the fanless system , how can u make a laptop without a fan ??? That is very important !!!!
@@Electromagic27 it’s efficiency is the reason, most people use it for light use and there is not much need for one, but if you plan to keep it long term, it’s better to get it with the fan as these chips may start to ware or get outdated over long periods of time causing the system to do more work.
I've recently picked up a used 2020 m1 pro and air, with the air being the maxed-out model. You've done an excellent job listing out the differences and explaining which one of those differences is actually a pro vs. con when comparing the MacBook pro to the air. For my use case, the pros of the Macbook pro were more "nice to have" features rather than actual need features, and since the MacBook air I came with was the optional upgraded 8-core version, I went with the air. BUT if the Pro had the ports or more ports like you've mentioned, as my dusty 2014 MacBook pro, I might've just stuck with the lower specced MacBook pro. I hate dongles. Also I didn't like that accidental touches to the touch bar on the pro either so that actually was a con for me. GREAT JOB on this video again!

@@Solicity850 you were not listening at all.. There are no fans in the Air

I’m guessing that in a couple years, the distinction between Air and Pro would have greater distinction again because of a bigger M chip line.
Great unbiased review of both machines. I think that for the majority of users, the MacBook Air will handle nearly any task they throw at it. I recently ordered a MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and the 8-core CPU/8-core GPU processor. It arrived on Thursday and will be my very first Mac. I'm excited to be getting it.

@@starsha9849 I absolutely love it! It replaced my 2 year old Dell XPS 15 that had an Intel Core i7. 32GB of RAM and a 500GB Samsung SSD. The MBA blows my old XPS out of the water in every aspect. It even runs Windows smoother using Parallels.
@@RobertoTaylor thanks! I’m looking at getting the same configuration. Not sure if I want to wait or even want the new upcoming MacBook Air next year. I will be running Windows in parallels as well when needed. Do you recommend the 16GB and 512 ssd?

@@RobertoTaylor that’s awesome to hear! My M1 Air is coming tomorrow with 16GB of ram along with a 1TB SSD! Can’t wait! 😁
I personally chose the macbook pro 13 "16gb ram.
For a basic use the air is fine and the differences with the pro are zero.
Internet, writing, small photo editing and video editing are absolutely identical.
The difference is seen when using the macbook outside the home (20% greater brightness, greater autonomy), when you do not use the internal speakers (the audio of the pro is more full-bodied and less crackling), when you use programs that require the use of the trackpad (much larger in the pro), when doing fairly heavy photo and video editing where the more powerful gpu helps, where the fan keeps the rendering performance identical for many hours (while on the air they drop a lot) and where the higher ram helps to avoid writing to ssd with consequent premature wear of the disk (swap memory). the question then is: what should we do with the macbook? basic use or medium-high level amateur / professional use?
I just went for the MacBook Pro but it was a tough choice, I was going through the check out on the air and just suddenly decided on the MacBook Pro at the last minute just because it will be my video editing machine.. It’s a tough call. I played it safe with the pro but I could have easily used the Air

Well thanks so much!
I’m buying one today - I bough the 12.9 iPad Pro with the magic keyboard thinking it would be my laptop solution, but I was wrong. I’m going to get the 1TB MacBook Pro w/16gb RAM today. I got the iPad yesterday, but after file transfers and trying to run office, it’s just not where it needs to be. Thanks for the video - this helped clear up where I was going. ✌️
Great video as always, Gary! With my workload, I could probably totally get by with the Air. But, the microphones are a bit better on the Pro. With as many Zoom calls and other things as I'm doing, it's tempting to go with the higher quality. Not sure it really matters, though, since both webcams still are... well... less than stellar... Very hard decision!
I placed an order for a base model Air earlier this week but went back and reordered a 16gb/8core/1tb earlier today too. Figured if I can expand it later might as well max it out (as much as budget alliws) now - before I regret it. Glad to hear you say the same.
Basically, for the same price you can buy a MacBook Air with 8 cores and 512gb for $1249 vs the MacBook pro with 8 cores and 256gb and fan for $1299. The cheaper mba has 7 cores and 256gb $999. You are choosing between the fan on the mbp and the memory on the mba, mostly.
Have both. The pro works better for me as the screen is brighter which makes a difference on such a small screen. It also feels better to type on.
The air keys feel softer while I feel the pro is much more tactile. I just flow better using the pro.
My problem is how can they make a laptop without a fan ??? That is crazy!! My budget is in the MB air range but tell me, should I go for the pro ? Am a student btw
What made me smile most is that the Air you said you wish you’d got is the exact one I have on order (should be here before Christmas). 8 core CPU, 8 core GPU, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. It’s be great if you (or any other tech channel) would compare the higher spec’d models. Keep up the great vids Gary.
Which one is bested for gaming? Should I get a MacBook Air 8 core GPU model or MacBook Pro? And will having 16gb ram on air makes it better for gaming? Thanks
Do not get the Air for gaming because it will overheat in minutes of playing a game. I had the M1 MacBook Air and while gaming for 5-10 minutes on Apple Arcade, it felt too warm for comfort. Having the fans from the MacBook Pro will prolong the M1 life and consistent reliable power.
Good video. I ordered a custom Air. 8-core GPU with 1TB. I did not upgrade the Ram though. For my workflow and based on testing in other channels it didn’t seem like it would affect the laptop that much. Yes my export times from FCP may be a little longer but once I’m done editing I don’t really care about that. I’d rather put the $200 saved into the storage. Also I save around a $100 through a work purchase plan so can’t complain. 😁
The NITs difference is the only thing that I might regret but I don’t like typing on the Pro because of that sharp edge and the Touch Bar doesn’t do it for me. The only issue with the custom build is the now 6-week lead time for the Air.
Gary: the MacBook Air has no fan

4:25 When I don't have my MacBook with me I never type stuff on my windows pc, I always wait until I get the chance, can totally agree
I just purchased the air 256. Is it worth upgrading to a PRO or maybe another air 520g? It’s mostly for flight simulator and emails
I would assume flight simulator has a high CPU/GPU usage and if you are using flight simulator for many hours per day, I would prefer the MacBook Pro because of the fan to keep it cool. A fan cooled cpu will always perform better for 4+ consecutive hours vs a non fan CPU/GPU.
I’m coming from a 2012 fatbook pro and I’m pretty sure my lady got me the M1 MBP so either way I’m sure I’m going to be blown away with the upgrade. Great video.
Great review!!!!!
You know what I haven’t seen as yet, the 2020 MBP 13 vs this M1 MBP 13 🤔🤔
Exactly
Won’t make a difference but u wanna see that coz I was planning to buy MBP 13’ but went with Air M1
The MacBook Air is tastic. Get it? Because has no fan? Oh whatever
I still obsessed with Air. No Fan, No Ventilation, Slim Body, Over Power and Never getting hot
Thanks.
After long term usage air will get damaged due to absence of fan?
Same question
My opintion about modern Apple Laptops would change instantly if they would be bothered to include just one damn normal USB 3.0 port on those things.
hello! i have a question - do you think that for a college student, having both an ipad and a macbook is a good idea, or too much? i just ordered an ipad air for college and i'm wondering if i also need a macbook. thanks!! great videos!!
I would want both. I’m thinking bout note taking on the iPad
The only thing I would on fixed in this video is the t-shirt, from Superman to the king of heroes "Batman"
