I just bought the new 16 inch MacBook Pro M1 Max thinking it would be the best laptop ever, but I was slightly let down. It's just too heavy in my opinion. I keep finding myself missing my old 15" Retina MacBook Pro, for the keyboard, display, trackpad, and overall build. The new 16" screen notch drives me insane as well, with half of my menu bar icons covered and the only way to access them is by using my second monitor. But even still, it is fast as hell which I love.

Is there anything you can recommend me to check or to take a detailed look at except the visual expection, keyboard and trackpad testing? Any interesting software than I can run, like diagnostics? I needed to replace my 2013 Macbook Air (4GB/128) because the USB-A ports had gotten intermittant. Over the last 9 years the Air did everything I needed it to with all the ports it came with (particularly with the SD card slot for expanded storage of video files). The M1 Macbook Pro (16GB/1TB) was what I chose and couldn't be happier, even though I paid list price. I'm 77 so this is likely my last computer I'll ever buy. It has all the ports, mag safe, great screen, AND FANS that I can ramp up with Macs Fan Control so I don't have to live with100°C CPU temps!

The screen, 16GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD were what pushed me towards the 14” - I specced out the M2 Macbook Air and with the same specs the price wasn’t too far off just getting the 14”, and you can’t make the screen on the M2 better, so it was a no brainer for me.

I have an M1 MBA and I've been trying to find an excuse to upgrade, but I can't. First, I still can't decide between these two devices, but if I had to I keep leaning toward the M2 Air, and then the only REAL improvement I'd see in upgrading is magsafe, which would be a big deal to open up another port, but not enough to justify the money to upgrade. So every time I end up just sticking with the M1 Air. I bought it to be a secondary computer, and it's become my primary one.

I'm glad I did, M1 Pro MBP has blown me away with its super solid performance, amazing screen, ports (all of which I use) and its ability to link to my 4K tv is just awesome. I do think you are right though, people really do need to sit and think of their real world use when making a decision between the M2 Air and the MBP M1Pro. I know of a few people who have bought the most expensive MBP M1's and they barely tax its intended capability when an M1 Air would've more than sufficed.

I recently made this choice and I started out with the M2 Air, but then switched to the 14" Pro. As a non-pro, the M2 Air actually fit my strict needs better, but a few factors made me make the switch:
    - 1) I needed the larger screen -- I was coming from an older 15" MBP, and while the difference wasn't that drastic on paper, I could definitely feel the loss of space.
    - 2) I needed more on-board storage and wanted more RAM, and while I could have just upgraded the Air, that got the price uncomfortably close to the discounted 14", especially considering...
    - 3) I wanted the extra ports, particularly the hdmi and sd card readers. Yes, I could have just purchased a dongle, but that would have gotten me even closer to the 14" price while also cutting into the portability benefit of the Air. But that said...
    - 4) I didn't actually need or want the increased portability -- The 14" was already much more portable than my old 15", and the Air actually felt too insubstantial; it made me feel like it was more susceptible to damage.
So with all of that taken together, plus the nice-to-have bonuses like the 14" having better audio output, an all-around better screen, and a more powerful chip (with active cooling) for if and when I do need to do more intensive work, the 14" ended up being a bit of a no-brainer.

The extra weight of the Pro vs the Air doesn't matter in your bag. Where it matters is if you're trying to use it on the sofa or on a plane/transit. Carrying an extra pound or using it on your lap while stationary is basically unnoticeable. The real deciding factor here is do you use your PC exclusively for office and browsing and is 250GB of storage enough. If the answer to both is yes, get the Air; if the answer to either is no, get the Pro.

I’m actually facing this struggle 😕, part of me knows I will be fine with the Air but it being so close to the pro with the ports and better screen is super tempting, then again those $500 dollars do make a difference for me as I could use them for accessories, new AirPods, a monitor, etc…

    • @arslan9665
      @arslan9665 Год назад +1

For the Air, you could always carry a dongle with all the ports you need, but you will still be stuck with the screen. I'd say what it really comes down to is your workflow, how long you're planning on keeping your laptop for, and how often you'll be travelling with it. I've got the M2 base model and I've been loving it!

(High specced) M2 Air - I already have a powerful desktop machine. The laptop is a secondary device and my focus is on portability but I want it to be able to do a big tasks in a pinch.
M1 Pro/Max MBP - The laptop is my everything. Here is where I will do the lot of my work. I feel the somewhat small compromise of portability is worth it for me having uncompromising performance.
Base/“MKBHD-config’d” MBA - I don’t quite have or need to spend the budget to consider other options. This will really be great for the price anyway.

I went for the M1pro with 16/512 since I needed more memory & space. A M2air with 16/512 (in my contry...) is veeery close to the baseline M1pro14.. And with a 20% mastercard discount, it became within reatch :) My conclution, the baseline M1Pro14, is STILL(!) the all in one best laptop on the market. Did exactly what you suggested with the pros/cons list and the score came up too close to call. Ended up going for the Air because having tried both, the Air screen hurts my eyes much less than the better specced Pro screen, especially noticeable in longer sessions. The difference was big enough to make me settle for a less impressive & smaller screen, worse speakers, and no HDMI + right side USB-C ports, all of which I found valuable. The Air portability is amazing though, so all good.

This was the decision I had to make when ordering my MacBook, whether to get the Base Model 14inch MacBook Pro, which starts at the same price as a maxed-out MacBook Air (M2), which I ended up getting. After all, I liked how thin and light it is, which is ideal for me because I use it for school and like carrying it with me everywhere. I know I'm not getting the Retina XDR Mini LED Display, the faster M1 Pro, or the M1 Max chip, but I don't mind. The one thing I don't like about the MacBook Air (M2) is how hot it gets when you're pushing it too hard, which rarely happens to me; it only happens when I play games like Roblox or more processor-intensive tasks. If you were going to acquire the maxed-out MacBook Air, I still think the 14-inch MacBook Pro would have been a superior decision (M2).

If you need more than 16 GB of RAM the M2 Air (8 CPUs, 8GPUs, 27 GB RAM, 512GB SSD) has the same price of the Mac Book Pro 14" base model, which cost roughly 360/400£ extra in UK with 32 GB of RAM depending if you have student discount or not. Currently I have a base M1 Mac mini that can handle Windows 11 on Parallel with good performance, but it is a bit slow with transition ( ex. Task View) which I think depends on the limited amount of RAM. I have noticed the Fan is always spinning at 1,700 rpm ( checked with Parallel ToolBox) but is very silent with temp around 35 Degrees Celsius. Do you think the Mac Book Air M2 with the above configuration can handle this Task without overheating or is better go with the Mac Book Pro 14" base model?
