Saw them live so many times. Always delivered. Best show was when they opened up for Ozzy and Ozzy fans booed them (not sure why). Layne calmly spoke "You all should go to the concessions stand get a hotdog and suck it" Then they went into Bleed the Freak, Love, Hate, Love and Man in the Box one after another. They won the crowd over after that.
I’ve only just really discovered Alice in chains and realised how good this performance is, I adore music and honestly this one of the best things I’ve ever seen.
Real late, but Sober Live at Reading is a mind bending vocal performance. Maynard is the only other vocalist that can even be mentioned in the same sentence as Layne in my opinion.
As a lifelong guitarist I cant say I listen to this band primarily for guitar like all the other bands I love. I fucking am mesmerized by Laynes voice and this performance is one of his bests.
Scott Weiland was a great singer too. And even better frontman. And Kurt... maybe he didnt had the vocal skills of Layne or Chris... but Kurt's voice was unique. I mean... that final chorus of "Where did you sleep last night"....
I got to see layne in the flesh in the lobby of the hotel where my uncle worked, during Alice in Chains' tour in Brazil back in 1993. While everyone was flirting with the groupies, layne was showing his telepathic powers in a card game. Guessing without failing, all the cards that people took from the deck. blowing everyones mind in the lobby. So... we can say his voice was literally supernatural
@@Annihilation_0f_The_Wicked9066 aside from raw attitude, I feel it when he cuts off the backing vocals at the end of the chorus and screams, "Shut!!" That to me is punk as fuck. But I definitely understand if you disagree
It wasn't just that Layne had power, he had absolute, tight control of every sound that came out of that beautiful instrument. He could control screams at a lower volume, which, singing full out soft is the hardest thing I ever had to try to do in my bar band days LOL! This band had it all. Power, brilliant lyrics that said something, great musicianship and everything so tightly played.... Metal at it's absolute peak for me. Thanks for posting brother!

Hfdz pj I don’t think I’ve really appreciated any bass player till him and actually since. He played it like no other. Don’t get me wrong i like the new Mike he’s very good but it something about mike starrs way he plays it. I saw Jerry interviewed and he said that they had to rent a bass during some shows for mike (I don’t know why) but they had to tape a diaper on the back side so he didn’t scratch it up because of the way he plays it so hard. Lol. True story I saw it in an interview.
These early performances where Layne feels good and is into it are magnificent. He hits those notes with ease. There’s no comparison with anyone alive and never will be. Layne was in a league of his own
paulph12002 i agree he’s not underrated, but he’s not as well known as he should be. Most people in my age group (I’m 22) have never even heard of AIC or recognize any songs by them.
Still is. Jerry is a badass motherfucking rockstar. If he had Layne's voice, along with his composing, lyrics and guitar skills he would easily be top 3 musicians of all time.

Beautiful words Ashley!

3:42 will forever be one of the best things in the world.
My thoughts exactly
this performance is honestly in my opinion there best ive ever seen.
They won the crowd over after that.
oh, he was taken from us too soon
@@PJ.Rob06Yes he was. Still heartbroken 💔
I’m a young guy and recently started listening to them. Wish they were all together still. I hate what drugs do to the greats
One of the greatest rock bands of all time
Man I get goosebumps hearing this song.as a black teen who love bass music and gangster rap I also fell in love with metal music
welcome to the world of music with real instruments, real life scenarios, and soul. not perc 30s and fuckn bitches
He had the mane and roar of a lion. Rest in Peace, Layne. Rest in Peace, Mike.
34 years ago this album was released Facelift! Aug 21! Still better than any music today! RIP Layne!
Yeah like you've listened to anything modern these days. Comments like this always crack me up
This. Never. Gets. Old.
I’ve only just really discovered Alice in chains and realised how good this performance is, I adore music and honestly this one of the best things I’ve ever seen.
Not nearly as good, but listen to early Stone Temple Pilots if you haven’t already.
Good onya Sass mate
Real late, but Sober Live at Reading is a mind bending vocal performance.
Maynard is the only other vocalist that can even be mentioned in the same sentence as
Layne in my opinion.
“He sang like an Angry Angel.” ⛓🎶🔊
Man, his voice is INSANE. He put his soul in that scream & never held back.
LONG LIVE LAYNE🕊⛓🤘🖤🖤
As a lifelong guitarist I cant say I listen to this band primarily for guitar like all the other bands I love. I fucking am mesmerized by Laynes voice and this performance is one of his bests.
Really, Layne is untouchable. Only Cornell was at his level...
Alejandro Angeles and maybe Vedder
Not saying that the other grunge singers are bad
Scott Weiland was a great singer too. And even better frontman. And Kurt... maybe he didnt had the vocal skills of Layne or Chris... but Kurt's voice was unique. I mean... that final chorus of "Where did you sleep last night"....
Alejandro Angeles agreed
@@alejandroangeles5515 I don't think kurt came anywhere close to the level of stayley and Cornell. Still a good singer tho and even better writer
That chorus is outstanding. Layne's power and control of his voice is on another level.
It doesn't matter what you think of AIC and their music, Layne's vocals here are phenomenal.
The power in Staley’s voice. Man I wish he were still here
Ok we're all here for 3:42 . Layne the greatest of them all!
Here for the whole part.... But Jesus christ that is awesome 😮❤
i keep coming back for “i’m the dog who gets BEAT” 2:05 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
I got goosebumps oh my
I got to see layne in the flesh in the lobby of the hotel where my uncle worked, during Alice in Chains' tour in Brazil back in 1993. While everyone was flirting with the groupies, layne was showing his telepathic powers in a card game. Guessing without failing, all the cards that people took from the deck. blowing everyones mind in the lobby.
So... we can say his voice was literally supernatural
Exceptional in all aspects imagine that. That’s a unique experience thanks for sharing that with us all. RIP friends.

That's a good way to put it.
There's nothing punk about this.
@@Annihilation_0f_The_Wicked9066 I strongly disagree sir. Don't let the bias blind you brother
@@steratorefriends6596 I'm not biased. I have just listened a ton of punk and there is none here. Please show me where you heard punk in this
@@Annihilation_0f_The_Wicked9066 aside from raw attitude, I feel it when he cuts off the backing vocals at the end of the chorus and screams, "Shut!!" That to me is punk as fuck. But I definitely understand if you disagree
Possibly the best live vocal performance in history. Goosebumps and tears. Damn Layne was the best.

The older I get, the more I appreciate AIC
The older this band get more you understand they were pretty rare and unique...more you understand that nobody will ever do this anymore
Same for me.
I haven't listened to them in 20 years and I was just thinking this!
This footage is so fucking raw, Layne was one of the greatest Rocksingers ever living. His control compared with his raspy voice, fucking insane.
Layne’s voice was an instrument all in itself. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Watching this on my way to work today in December 2024. We miss you Layne
I can feel the pain when he scream " Feeeeeeeeeddd my eyeeeeess "
@@ChrisJerichoTv pretty sure it was feed my eyes man
Damn right, and feeling vocals in most of todays music is non existent.
Troy Arch
Lol
It wasn't just that Layne had power, he had absolute, tight control of every sound that came out of that beautiful instrument. He could control screams at a lower volume, which, singing full out soft is the hardest thing I ever had to try to do in my bar band days LOL! This band had it all. Power, brilliant lyrics that said something, great musicianship and everything so tightly played.... Metal at it's absolute peak for me. Thanks for posting brother!
Love the fact its uploaded in black n white
Magnificent vocal performance. Incredibly impactful, powerful. Detail: Anyone else dig the way he sings the word "beat"?
Gregory Bower yeah man I wish he said it like that in the studio version
I love it
immmm the dogggg who gets BEAT
I can't believe this has been up for four years and I just find it.... Easily the best version of MitB ever. Great sound quality and Layne is at his peak, no doubt. Can you imagine this world without You Tube keeping all of this alive?
Man only if he knew today how much people love, respect, and acknowledge his talent. Favorite band and lead of all time.
The drumming adds such a great bottom to this fantastic performance.
I love how Sean Kinney does the little flip with his head it’s so sexy But mike Starr made me appreciate bass again. He could pound that guitar. Sooo sick now that was sexxxxxxyyy
@@hnyweelz8771 The way Mike stomped his foot makes him look so cool. Coolest bass guitar player.
4:17 I love how it sounds like Layne and the guitar are both singing vocals here
The way Layne sings "my eyes" in this performance is so beautiful.
These early performances where Layne feels good and is into it are magnificent. He hits those notes with ease. There’s no comparison with anyone alive and never will be. Layne was in a league of his own
RIP Layne
LOL
That power !!!
Underrated singer
Underrated? !!?? You are either joking or trolling.
paulph12002 i agree he’s not underrated, but he’s not as well known as he should be. Most people in my age group (I’m 22) have never even heard of AIC or recognize any songs by them.
Jerry Cantrell was an unbelievable guitarist and backing vocalist
Still is. Jerry is a badass motherfucking rockstar. If he had Layne's voice, along with his composing, lyrics and guitar skills he would easily be top 3 musicians of all time.
@@derekangle9737Dear God ❤ so accurate.amen
This is no doubt one of the best live rock performances of all time. I challenge anyone to refute this fact. AIC 4 ever, Layne 4 ever.
this is a great performance, but there are many better rock performances than this, probably the most notable: queen at live aid
Queen was good at live aid. Freddy had some hiccups. But this one comes in a close close close second.

Not bullshit.
Freddie had done hiccup. Are you dense?
Airdrome- I agree wholeheartedly.. this is top 5 without question

its Layne Staley dude... ive said enough, greatest singer ive seen in my entire life.
Monster voice full of emotion you don’t hear today.
He was better live, Unplugged near dead he is still incredible.
Totally
Even better live! Fed off the energy from the crowd. The crowd must've been amazing that night!
Long gone are the days of vocalist of this caliber
No joke! I don't care if it makes me sound old and bitter, but none of these modern, disposable "rock" singers are even in the same universe as Staley, Vedder, and Cornell.
Can you imagine being in that crowd? Amazing!!!!!
When he hits the last chorus, time just stops.
I would pay outrageous money to go back in time to see this. I’m 23 and I feel I have missed out on all the music worth being witness to. God bless these recordings this shit is fantastic and the closest I’ll ever get to seeing true musical greatness
When he was a kid he wanted to be a singer and he end up being the best rock singer of all time
Holy fuck. The best live performance of any rock song. Ever.
Huge AIC fan and grunge in general but man nobody can touch Freddie Mercury that dude was a powerhouse.
He hits the last verse so hard he puts his hand up to his head like he's about to pass out! 3:50. Layne was the greatest singer EVER

it got out of control before and after unplugged, and then after demris death

I'm learning to sing and I noticed when I sing that note my head starts to hurt so it's probably that layne is my hero but you can hear he's pulling and hurting his voice
20 + yrs later and still 🔥🔥🔥
The way that Layne hits the chorus near the end is mind blowing. I literally said wow out loud watching this and I don’t even know how
Jerry and Mike could keep playing after that. Lol I would have had chills hearing him hit that.
This proves that Layne had the best set of lungs to ever walk the planet . 4.34 mins of the G.O.A.T at work :)
Oh yeah. This takes serious lung capacity to sing, especially at this volume.
