Most ppl praise the MTV unplugged video. What most ppl dont realize is by the time they recorded Unplugged, Layne was in the depths of his addiction and had already lost most if not all of his teeth. Layne had final say on the editing of the footage. He did not allow close ups of his mouth and edited out shots of him seemingly asleep between verses. While I do agree that AIC Unplugged is historic I can only imagine how magnificent it would have been if his voice was as powerful as it is in this video and having all of his teeth. In Unplugged you can see Layne struggle to make the powerful vocals as he did in this Bleed the Freak taping.
@@sasha219 you can also tell with the sunglasses. He wore them so people wouldn't see how bad heroin made his eyes look. Same thing for the rooster video
@Jerry Cantrell thanks. If you are who you claim to be, can you answer a question? Mark Lanagan described in his book how you both got wasted and ended up crashing at his place. You asked to borrow something from his collection and never returned it.... what was it?
Chill bumps... that is what a performance like this creates. Chill bumps. I once heard a person describe AIC music as hauntingly beautiful. Absolutely perfect description.
Easily best two voices that harmonize such a privilege to be able to experience this in my childhood and adolescence the nineties were an amazing time for this music so much talent idk that anyone will ever touch AIC but I just know the music takes me back I wanna go back
Layne would have been insulted if he had been because he is an artist with a message that most would deem as subversive, when his message was true brilliance!
Probably my favorite, but hard to go against Chris Cornell being “the best”. I was actually just thinking this morning if I was given the impossible to decision to still be able to see one of them live, who I’d choose
@@b_collins7846 That it does. Got to see Scott Wylan/STP in Philly about 10 years ago and it was incredible. Pretty sad that all these greats are gone now, and so many pretty recently. Wish I made more of an effort to see Chris live. I’m sure it would have been amazing.
After all these years Layne’s voice still gives me goosebumps. There will never be another like him. Sadly, I don’t think he ever fully grasped just how amazingly gifted he was.
Unfortunately most talented people don't see themselves as others do, and sadly for us most of them have their demons! You don't get to greatness without wading in the filth first and being very introspective!
I don't agree. He was aware. But his addiction made him not care about it. A dope fiend only cares about one thing! I love AiC especially Layne, just saying.

I read in a forum that Layne would give his portion of VIP tickets to kids that were outside the venue just hanging out with no money for tickets... Just goes to show what a beautiful and kind soul he was. Most people want to focus on his descent into addiction and while that was an aspect of his life, that's not who he was. He was a beautiful soul. Hope he's in peace now. Thank you, Layne for gifting us with your talent and one of a kind voice.
Loneliness is a state of mind ans for him he was alone into his addiction. He si truly missed. And I could not agree more with you. By the way he once fighthed with someone because wsnred ro give some tickets to some wealthy people and Layne said no that they can afford the tickets but the kids can't.
I agree he seemed like a really cool guy and never let the fame go to his head ...one of my all time fav bands..Layne was like alot of other good people that unfortunately developed addiction problems...God bless and rest in peace Layne staley
It’s unreal to think that Layne was an actual person. He was the closest thing to a fallen angel the world will ever see. And Jerry’s guitar is so perfect for Layne and Layne is perfect for jerry. Saying they were meant to be a duo is and understatement. Rip to the fallen angel of grunge
People must understand that even though Layne's vocals are phenomenal, the unique sound of AIC was the combination of both Layne and Cantrell's voices on the choruses. Layne on his own is un matched as we hear on the Mad Season Songs and other projects Layne participated on.. But the true AIC sound is the combination of Layne and Cantrell, a sound we will never again get no matter which singer AIC gets. That haunting, but heavenly AIC sound will only exist in history...
You are right. OG AIC vocal sound wasnt just Layne but Cantrell too. Their music/melodies were truly collaborated between them all. In AIC Layne had the power vocals. His sound exploded out of his chest. In Mad Season you can hear the transition to more of a head voice with a more gentle sound. Some have speculated that after years of abuse he could no longer make those powerful chest sounds we all love. He was obviously weaker while in Mad Season but he was also finding his voice without Cantrell. As AIC has been reborn with William the collaborated vocals with Cantrell, while still encompassing the Cantrell sound and is great, the "it" factor just seems a bit off. Maybe they should have dropped the AIC name...idk. Just wonder what else Staley would have given us. No hate just love. Its hard to pick up the pieces and even harder when it gets thrown in your face even 20 years after the fact
Jerry and Layne are both highly talented songwriters. Layne's voice...we'll never hear the likes of a voice like that again. The band as a whole, we'll never hear chemistry like that again. This band's music is the best thing about the entire 90's.
Layne is and always will be the best vocalist in any genre. Jerry is the riff lord and blends blues and metal better than anyone. Their vocal harmonization is phenomenal. AIC until I die!
I named my son Layne after him also. 🖤 he has blonde hair and blue eyes also, when he sees Layne Staley he says “mommy look it’s me when I’m a grown up”
I turn to this video when I want to remember Layne as he should be: at the height of his powers, so vibrant and strong. This live version of Bleed the Freak is better then the album version. One of the few bands that have this ability. Love you Layne, love you Mike.
You can say the same with many other songs of their’s, not just this one. Rooster @ Tilburg demolishes the studio recording. MITB @ ABC concert is amazing, but the version performed in Osaka is like a revamped, uptempo edit. Forgot the name of the concert, pretty sure it was in ‘93, they performed for about 25 min only and opened with Nutshell and THAT version might be, in my opinion, one of the best of that song. Down In A Hole unplugged outdoes the studio recording etc etc Great in the studio, but they really shine during live performances.
Layne died 19 years ago today, I started getting into Alice in Chains last year and they are now personally one of my favorite bands and Layne one of my personally favorite singers. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, I wish you were still making music and making us smile.
I started listening to Alice in Chains last month 😅 Now it's one of my favourite bands and Layne is one of the better vocals I've listened 😮 I was a child in 90's. Sad that he's not here anymore 😰💔
Today is 20. I've been a fan since 90 when I was introduced. I named my son Jameson layne in honor. Unfortunately he was premature and passed so I carry his name on my leg in both of their honor!
Great to see so many new fans! I personally started listening to Alice in Chains when I was 12-13 because of my parents. I'm not 29 and it's my absolute favorite band still. By the way, please check out Mad Season, which was a band Layne was in with some guys from Pearl jam and Screaming Trees. You will be amazed for sure ; )
Some people in the 90s simply weren't into this type of music, or didn't know AIC. AIC was especially HUGE then with fans in their teens & 20s, so don't feel bad :) . If you haven't heard this '93 performance on YT yet of "Rain When I Die", here ya go! It showcases Layne Staley's vocals, & I think this song doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves. ruclips.net/video/EgMZAcHu3ZU/видео.html
Layne is by far the best vocalist of the “big 4” of grunge. Beyond that he is still one of the best vocalists I’ve ever heard. He still hit the notes and put in great performances no matter what his condition. Now that’s talent.
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range. However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song: ruclips.net/video/gh20q3Dx8RI/видео.html Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl. Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.
It is really a toss up between Cornell and Layne, both amazing just depends on whose style you enjoy more, I can't chose myself who was better, depending on my mood I could say either is better, still no use in comparing, love both bands and choosing a favorite would be pointless when I can listen to both
@@tomzeru Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, they are just the 4 most commercially successful grunge bands, all are great but pretty different even though they inhabit the same genre, Alice in Chains and Nirvana are probably the easiest to get into because they have the least amount of records then you have Soundgarden which doesn't also have many records but they do have a bit more than thise other 2 and then you have Pearl Jam which still exist as a band and are still actively making music, my personal favorites of the 4 are either Soundgarden or Alice in chains but all of them have great music and you really can't go wrong with any of them.
Agreed it’s crazy to think that on singing capability alone Kurt was probably the worst out of the main grunge bands, as Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell were/are shit hot singers as well. Still he made up for it in other ways as lyrically he was probably the best.
God damn that scream near the end when he says "bleed for me" gives me chills. Layne man what can you say....dude was a vocal savage. To do that scream an then immediately jump into the chorus....One of the greats, plain an simple
It's not really a scream... He can control his voice so well It may sound like a scream but its not. Its kind of hard to describe it. Its like the perfect yell I guess. A scream is a yell that went to high pitch. Its pretty impressive that he can yell that high and not scream.
??? He's widely regarded as one of the greatest singers and front men of not only the entire grunge era but in all of rock music. Even among his peers he was regarded as the best of the best with the most distinctive and powerful voices anyone ever heard. There isn't a best of list that he isn't at or near the very top of and when you ask anyone from the grunge era (myself included) to name the one person from that era who most defined that era we're nearly all going to name Layne (even over Kurt).
Layne Staley the best there was and the best there ever will be !! His voice at 60 or 70% was better than most at 100 %!! Bless his heart man so sad that he went the way he did !! RIP Layne !!
The echo oh his voice starting at 2:35 gives me chills. His mic skills and talent at that time in history were untouched. He was bulletproof nobody could do better
2:25 - 3:30 is one of the most powerful yet haunting piece of vocal work I’ve ever heard in my life. Laynes voice is truly unmatched. No grunge vocalist comes close let alone most vocalists to ever be recorded
I've come to the party late...but God I feel lucky to have discovered this fantastic band. This is without a doubt one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

I saw Alice in Chains in 1993. I'm 46 now. Seeing Layne and the band was a religious experience. I'm so thankful for the experience. Rest in Paradise Layne.
Layne's voice exudes confidence, with a boldness that leaves anyone who has ever tried to sing feeling so small in its presence. It crawls its way out of the mix with a shriek that lingers for hours, echoing through the dirty alleyways. To call him "intimidating" is an understatement.
I dont think ive seen anyone try to cover bleed the freak or love hate love? I could be wrong!? I dont know, That's some BIG OLE shoes to fill with those songs!

2:28-3:25 is the definition of a rock god. Dammit man. I can only dream of the music that could have been, had he not left us so early. And from 3:25 on, Jerry is transferring his soul through that guitar. What a performance by the entire band here. This video alone is enough to make any music lover a fan for life, if they'd never heard of them. Oh, how I miss Layne in this world. My heart bleeds for you, brother.

Oh yes.....These songs have gotten me through very dark experiences. It's sad in knowing fellows like Shannon, Kurt, Scott, Andrew and Layne couldn't. Solace in knowing they couldn't Fight The Good Fight. To pull yourself out of it, be dazzled at the ability and strength to do so..... Humbling.....Such a loss. The crumbling music industry needs bands that have great talent.
I'd do anything to have been in that crowd for this performance. I love watching all of their lives but this one was always on another level for me. It's insanely euphoric and hypnotizing listening but also makes me mourn the loss of Layne even harder for the simple fact that I'll never have the opportunity to hear his voice in person. Guess I'll just keep coming back here..RIP Layne and Mike
This is the absolute epitome of Layne for me. Absolute power in his voice that oozed out his soul. Every time I watch this I feel something deeply. I don't know what the feeling is, but I love it.
@@A31Chris And did you notice how the audio was fixed in the last verse chorus, just yesterday or the day before , where one of Layne's words was overdubbed for just a split second, in such a noticeable way? The word 'F*CK' and all derivitives of, are among the most potent of all words in and out of existence. Editing via sound equipment is very, very, wrong! If I was an artist and that was done to me, I would have a cow and never let it go!--not ever. I would be screaming, crying, and throwing things around...And I would be out to get the sound nem and record companies--i would never get over it until I got revenge/cause strife in any way I could, perhaps via trickery...

Yeah I have to agree the older I get the more I listen to the intricacies and nuances in the fact that they hardly ever made any mistakes specially Cantrell is just amazing. This is got to be one of the best rock bands set of ever existed imagine if they had gotten their drug problem under control….
He was beautiful, and I don't understand why people don't see it. In his own way, he's just as gorgeous as Kurt - look at the video for "Them Bones". I thought my head was going to explode the first time I saw it.
1:15 might be the most powerful live vocal line I've ever heard. Absolutely peels the paint off the walls while being soothing and sounding effortless.
This song gives me that soul shiver. Layne could take you to another realm with those vocals and Jerry's melodies and guitar riffs are amazing. Mikey and Sean are keeping the backbone beat on blast. Never get sick of them.
I bought the 'Facelift' album after I saw Alice in Chains open for Van Halen in '91. I love this version of the song even more than the studio version. This is like a complete immersion into the Seattle scene of the early '90s. It's big, it's heavy, it's deep, and it's dark. For me this is a masterpiece of Jerry's sound and Layne's vocals.
I was fortunate enough to live in Western Washington during the grunge heyday. Saw these fellas live twice. They're incomparable. The harmonies alone set them miles apart from their contemporaries. RIP Layne. Your loss devastated us.
Did you know that they once worked together in a studio and recorded a song for Alice In Chains called Right Turn, on that same track Cornell demonstrates his vocal ability and versatility that surpasses Layne's talent (which was no small feat either.) It's as if Layne is like a blacksmith's shop, and Cornell is a Rolls-Royce, both are good, but one really is the best overall.
@@drvitorhugocLayne was more talented than Cornell and with almost no vocal training, Cornell had a coach practically until the last day of his life, Layne has transmitted on stage like no other and really Layne was more versatile than Cornell, there is quite a bit of Layne content in other genres musicals and even doing covers of other bands, one of them being Soundgarden.

I don't know about ever? Just because their have been lots of singers that were great, but he does belong in the group of greatest singers ever to sing.
@@Lily-gs9ivpersonally Layne’s power puts him well above Chris, IMO. I love both, and would take either one over Kurt Cobain, but Chris sang using mixed voice. Although it sounded GREAT and he had an amazing range, and a STRONG mixed voice, Layne sang all of this in chest voice. If you don’t know singing terminology that may mean nothing to you, but basically… it’s physically impossible for 99% of singers to replicate what Layne did. You can tell it’s true when you hear other bands try to cover songs like “Would” and “Man in the Box”. They strain and still can’t hit those notes. A lot of songs have higher vocal notes than Bb4 (the high note in Man in The Box and Would?), but very few male singers can get that high in their chest voice. If they can REACH that note, it’s nowhere near as powerful as when Layne did it. He was just another breed. RIP to all the grunge legends🕊️💙

Haha I love that they used a live recording as their official music video for this song, really shows how amazing Layne was :)
The best
I know right, remember when artist had talent, its considered crazy to be able to play live with your own voice.

ruclips.net/video/ZPUbJWkiXsc/видео.html
Don’t forget Sean and mike they too made the sound of this band great.
Indeed ....together they are angels.
I thought first layne is a big man because of his voice..But AIC incomparable
Jerry and Layne are both highly talented songwriters. Layne's voice...we'll never hear the likes of a voice like that again. The band as a whole, we'll never hear chemistry like that again. This band's music is the best thing about the entire 90's.

You were into Bowie I bet
However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
ruclips.net/video/gh20q3Dx8RI/видео.html
Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
It is really a toss up between Cornell and Layne, both amazing just depends on whose style you enjoy more, I can't chose myself who was better, depending on my mood I could say either is better, still no use in comparing, love both bands and choosing a favorite would be pointless when I can listen to both
What are the big 4? New to grunge with a thirst to discover

It's insanely euphoric and hypnotizing listening but also makes me mourn the loss of Layne even harder for the simple fact that I'll never have the opportunity to hear his voice in person. Guess I'll just keep coming back here..RIP Layne and Mike
My sentiments exactly. Seeing him perform live just once would be a dream come true
Definitely one of the greatest live performances ever
The power, the voice, the music, the lyrics, the audio, and Layne.......one of the most powerful songs ever. Report-out.
This is the absolute epitome of Layne for me. Absolute power in his voice that oozed out his soul. Every time I watch this I feel something deeply. I don't know what the feeling is, but I love it.
Such a great song rip Layne
Love your channel man I appreciate your work brotha!
I think the song is decent by itself. It's Layne and that voice, THAT FUCKING VOICE that makes it great.

My biggest bitch is the break of the continuity.
I hated all those years they censored the video to black hole sun. Only recently (last few years) has the original version come out.
@@A31Chris That means you may know where chris Cornell bought his voice, or perhaps not...
How is AIC not in the hall of fame? 2021 get it DONE...the singular best vocalist in history! And the beat back up vocals in history! The harmony will NEVER be matched!
They're too good for the R&RHOF
@@5burowz agreed
Rock hall. Is a joke!
Layne's voice good lord...I am heartbroken I will never be able to experience it live but am grateful for videos such as this. That pure talent ...no one will ever touch him.
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
ruclips.net/video/gh20q3Dx8RI/видео.html&pp=ygUQYmV5b25kIHRoZSB3ZWxsIA%3D%3D
Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
Staley is the grunge god.
No, he looks like a Roman god
@Hardcore Niglet He would have burned Rome even more than Nero ever did.
Yeah he had so much fire
I grew up listening to AIC as a kid and find myself more obsessed as I get older.
Something about Layne, his voice and not to mention he is beautiful. Rip Layne
Yes, he was so gorgeous 💗
Same.
Yeah I have to agree the older I get the more I listen to the intricacies and nuances in the fact that they hardly ever made any mistakes specially Cantrell is just amazing. This is got to be one of the best rock bands set of ever existed imagine if they had gotten their drug problem under control….
You know there good when the live performance is better than studio
He was beautiful, and I don't understand why people don't see it. In his own way, he's just as gorgeous as Kurt - look at the video for "Them Bones". I thought my head was going to explode the first time I saw it.
1:15 might be the most powerful live vocal line I've ever heard. Absolutely peels the paint off the walls while being soothing and sounding effortless.
Miss the days when two dudes with talent and passion could just make music that defined a generation. Those times are long gone….
I was at that show
That giant voice came from his little body. that's INSANE!
Right?!
He was 6ft tall not exactly small
I was fortunate enough to live in Western Washington during the grunge heyday. Saw these fellas live twice. They're incomparable. The harmonies alone set them miles apart from their contemporaries. RIP Layne. Your loss devastated us.
Literally one of the best voices of that generation.

@@drvitorhugoc well use to think the same abt cornell being the very best until I see layne kn facelift
The best singer ever!!! Who agrees??
i do
I don't know about ever? Just because their have been lots of singers that were great, but he does belong in the group of greatest singers ever to sing.
Chris Cornell?
For me, thats Luciano Pavarroti. If we talk about rock, definitely Layne
Best Vocal Performance in History!!! Layne Thomas Staley!!!!!! No one can or ever will replace the raw soul and emotion in this mans voice! Hope you're singing in Gods choir like an Angry Angel!!!
