This is the softest version of Layne we ever saw. The way he sings "Down, oh down" literally makes tears drip from my eyes. Such a beautiful talent, we lost. We miss you so much, Layne ❤
I think it’s the fact that he’s singing about his addictions and was most likely on heroin during this performance like he was during MTV unplugged. It’s eerie as he sings about the addiction that he is currently fighting, he’s not singing about something he’s overcome

That time, the feeling, gone, left feeling displaced. New music just does not fill the void of this period of music. I feel like music peaked. Im not that old i dont feel like "you youngsters dont know what good music is" but at the same time there is just not much modern musicians making music that stir the emotion or feelings.
"My pain is self-chosen At least I believe it to be I could either drown Or pull off my skin and swim to shore Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see" ...what powerful, profound and moving lyrics! Layne was a genius, part of that all too talented and departed class!
I’d love to hear how people interpret these lyrics. Pull off my skin and swim to shore is a double entendre to me. He’d adopted the identity of the drug user, it took over him like invasion of the body snatchers and he ‘wore it’. But also if he kicked drugs he’d go through the agony of withdrawals paralleled with the pain of the healing process in recovery. It would hurt like peeling off one’s skin. You have to pull off your old skin, so to speak, in the recovery process. Recovery is just as much about behaviour as it is about emotional healing. The idea of deterioration and weakness of the skin related to long term drug addiction contrasted to a beautiful strong shell, like his formerly healthy physique and angelic looks. But also the new shell being his new identity without the label of the public looking at him at just a junkie. Genius lyrics even just looking at those 2 lines. Lyrical analysis is something I love to do.
Yeah, that's a great interpretation! It fits a line from Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet", which Layne no doubt read as its the direct inspiration for this song: ""It is not a garment I cast off this day, but a skin that I tear with my own hands."
@@bradnorthcote1301 I read that Layne was deep into Gibran when they formed Mad Season. In fact, most of the songs in their lone album had Gibran's influence in one form or another.
My only wish is something that's completely unattainable - to permanently go back to the late '80's & early '90's, when music was this good and talent actually meant something. Miss your talented & irreplaceable voice. I can relate. 1:42
Layne Staley -best male rock vocal ever. Even closed in a dying body his voice was pure, strong and so special. Such a gift from God, such a loss and a waste.
Yes he's the only front man that sounds good 👍👍 always . He holds notes better than most and too be on (H )WHEN PERFORMING AND SOUND SO GOOD PROVES: HE WAS BORN WITH HIS PHENOMENAL SOUND (S) #1
I don't know if we'll ever see real musical talent and intelligent lyricism in mainstream music again. With the absolute worthless garbage that's being promoted for younger generations now it's doubtful.
Best front man ever. No one is close to his voice. You can tell he is really into this performance. Such a shame he is gone. God I wish we all could have saved him
They're so lucky to see this live, the audince I mean. This was the year I was born. What I'd do to be in their place. All I can do is smoke some pot and imagine I was there.
It’s amazing how many people don’t know Mad season. They’re in a juke box at a local bar I play pool at. I’ll throw some mad season and everyone always ask me who it is.
AIC puts me in awe of Layne's power but Mad Season makes me think about how much great music we missed out on. His voice was so beautiful and versatile. I'm on such a kick right now and its hard to stop.
You mean you guys are going through the rattle in other words it is referred too as clucking...or plainly withdrawals ? Unfortunately for me I'm Still doing both, white & dark...I've had a clean stint not long ago for about 2 weeks I held on and then I stated to use again, which was a mistake obviously. It was meant to be only a little and now it's been a 3 week binge. So that's how I've been fighting this possessive evil thing. I've been taking now basically for 2 years with little breaks in between but for the most part it's been 2 years of addiction. I don't really smoke the white as much mainly the dark & I don't pin up I do it occasionally as I know the dangers and it's very addicting already and doing that just makes it even more harder to stop. But like I was saying I mainly smoke with the occasional dig. Anyway before the 2 year stint I was clean for 6 Months and I've been kicking myself that I started using again. But i guess i have the resources to stop as I'm only 26 nearly 27. So for about in total I've been doing smack since I was 24 so do the maths. And I'm not ready fully to quit even though I did have a 6 Months or maybe a little bit longer stint of being clean but then I fell in again. Purely from the fact that I was always craving it a lot. Then I took it as I missed it so much. And yeah now we are here. But I'm gonna try to stop as I have some subutex saved and my money is drying up and since I need to wait for my next paycheck I figured I won't have the possibility to do it since I won't have the money for it. So I'm taking advantage of the situation...
Man, if Layne could have seen himself the way we see him, I think he'd still be with us. One of the loudest, and quietest losses we've ever had in music 😢
I say the same about my son that passed away of an overdose. If only he knew what everyone saw in him and how everyone felt about him. He was loved by so so many and was the kindest, caring, most humble, lovable, intelligent, and empathetic man I ever knew. 23 forever
This is like hearing a ghost from the past. I had no clue that Mad Season existed until two weeks ago, now I hear Laynes voice once again in material that is 100% new to me.
Mark Lannegan 🖤 (Though he was the singer for Screaming Trees, he contributed lyrics to 'Above' and 'Long Gone Days', and he replaced Layne for a short time during the late '90's. He also sang 'Brother' by Alice in Chains during the virtual tribute to Layne Staley with the MoPOP Founders Awards in 2020. Mark passed on February 22nd, 2022, 5 days before my birthday that year... so that was a bummer to say the very least. Had me in my feels that whole week thinkin' about everyone) The only surviving members of Mad Season are Barrett Martin and Mike McCready
As a boy I was mesmerized by Layne and this song by Mad Season. As a man, nothing changes. Sadly we didn’t get to see him grow older. A change I’m sure we all would have welcomed. I hope he found peace somewhere between all of this. Thanks for the memories.
New Years Day, 2025. Will be 30 years now, since these guys graced us. Miss Layne oh so much. Also missing Chris, Andy, Mark, Kurt, Shannon and Scott. I'd give up a lot to be back in these times again. We just wanted good music, a lil weed, and to spend this time with the people we cared about. Lil jam session every now and then. Hell, we didn't even need food.
We live in tough times, but we also lived in or around the 1990s AD. The renaissance of music, film, art, and culture. We also had the technology to preserve many of those memories. If you remember the 90s, count your blessings. If you don't, watch as much media from that time as you can, and imagine a more carefree world.
In my opinion, this is the best live performance by a rock vocalist ever. I tear up watching it every time. The world was a better place when Layne Staley was singing in it. The pure talent he possessed still blows my mind 30 years later. Also I thank God I made it out of my opiate battle 16 years ago 🙏 But watching Layne sing like an angel while clearly losing his battle still breaks my heart all these years later. RIP to the 🐐
I'm happy you beat your demons & you're still here with us today. My brother didn't make it out of his battle with drugs. Tbh, I don't think he wanted to beat his demons no matter how hard we fought his battles for him. Listening to Layne's beautifully haunting voice always takes me down this inevitable tormenting road of "what if" & "why?". What if they were still with us & why couldn't we save them? It's for sure hell on earth for my never-ending depression, but I'll always need Layne's voice in my life.
Blessings for your sobriety today. I'm 10 years clean in the spring. Came of age at the beginning of the oxycontin epidemic. Began shooting dope in 1994 at age 14. I didn't get clean until I was 34. I survived long enough to get better, watching all my friends and family perish. I was 12 the first time I heard Layne's voice, grew up to Cobain, Cornell, Vedder, Weiland, and Layne Staley. Funny how Eddie is the only one left. Durvived the oxycontin years, only to endure the heroin years, methamphetamine years, and fentanyl epidemic that has taken so many. Now I work as a mental health counselor after getting a masters degree in social work and working with other addicts these last 5 years. Layne always reminds me of how far I've came, he invokes such strong memories of my childhood, the sadness I felt after years of abuse and wanting to take my own life. This song represents a generation, it will carry on forever in the hearts of those that are still here, and as a voice for those that that are not. RIP Layne
It's hard to watch, but the band members of Mad Season say he got sober during this time. But he's so skinny....at least he wasn't bad off like he got. I mostly just feel badly for Layne
Whats wild is there hasn't been one single human being born that has similar vocal chords as Layne's. Thats how unique his voice was, i hope God and Laynes blesses the Earth with that one day
“Head full of lies is a weight tide to my waist” he wrote such meaningful lyrics for junkies. He just cut right through the bullshit and says it point blank and it’s beautiful. This song he’s basically spelling it out for us. I’m a drug addict and I’m losing my fight. Will I survive? If fucking sucks he died. I don’t like to say lost the fight. Because you don’t just lose. So much pain
im 44 years old and this song is the most influential song of my life, it speaks to my soul in sadness and in joy both. as I sit here reading the comments I cant help but cry knowing that this layne had found his purpose in the world with his voice and ability to touch so many. sadly it was cut short. there has always been a bit a comfort in sorrow.

One of the best vocalists ever....
This is the softest version of Layne we ever saw. The way he sings "Down, oh down" literally makes tears drip from my eyes. Such a beautiful talent, we lost. We miss you so much, Layne ❤
Heartbreaking 💔 yes this world lost this dear sweet genius too soon

@@andyslagle3240 thank you.
Because he was so brilliantly gifted
I think it’s the fact that he’s singing about his addictions and was most likely on heroin during this performance like he was during MTV unplugged. It’s eerie as he sings about the addiction that he is currently fighting, he’s not singing about something he’s overcome
I know, 2022 here. I listen to this and it is 117/98 all over again. Arguably the band with the best longevity, apart from Nirvana? Discuss in no more than 1000 words. Thanks Roxanne, I , miss Layne too!

He was so beautiful. I just wish he would have valued himself like the millions of fans he had.
Indeed he was, and if only it had been that simple . . .
Just glad this high quality footage exists.

@@bertbretherton hey man, I know I'm just some random dude on the internet but hey, "random dudes" from the 90s basically saved my life so here goes. I discovered Alice In Chains/ Mad Season only a few years ago, but their music has really changed my life for the better. I love that you're not as closed minded as my grandparents and many others' are. Heck, my grandma wouldn't last with Queen, much less Mad Season but you rock man! That time, the feeling, gone, left feeling displaced. New music just does not fill the void of this period of music. I feel like music peaked. Im not that old i dont feel like "you youngsters dont know what good music is" but at the same time there is just not much modern musicians making music that stir the emotion or feelings.
Finally , Mad season is fucking awesome.
Layne and Chris are getting me through the Covid19 isolation🤟

LITERALLY
"My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see"
...what powerful, profound and moving lyrics!
@@user-fn6vm5tb8p I was going to ask around what people make of that expression but I feel your interpretation is dead on.
Thanks for sharing
Yeah, that's a great interpretation! It fits a line from Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet", which Layne no doubt read as its the direct inspiration for this song: ""It is not a garment I cast off this day, but a skin that I tear with my own hands."
@@bradnorthcote1301 I read that Layne was deep into Gibran when they formed Mad Season. In fact, most of the songs in their lone album had Gibran's influence in one form or another.
@@djbtapales Thank you for sharing that
My only wish is something that's completely unattainable - to permanently go back to the late '80's & early '90's, when music was this good and talent actually meant something. Miss your talented & irreplaceable voice. I can relate. 1:42

From the greatest music generation of all time. The 90s will always be a musical monster of a decade. I'm so glad I got to live thru it as a teen.
Just glad to have lived through it
Absolutely. Born in 1979, it was mind blowing all the music that was being released when I was 15, 16, etc. Unreal.
I don't know if we'll ever see real musical talent and intelligent lyricism in mainstream music again. With the absolute worthless garbage that's being promoted for younger generations now it's doubtful.
I agree, born in 1977 and so proud to have lived my teenage yrs in the 90's when music was so powerful and kick ass!
Me too. Wish we could just go back for a few days
Nobody has a voice like Layne. He was a tremendous talent.
Best front man ever. No one is close to his voice. You can tell he is really into this performance. Such a shame he is gone. God I wish we all could have saved him
What a talent, what a voice, he went way too early. One of a kind
Layne wasn't able to help himself, but he has helped many of us who struggle with Depression. While his Life was short, he was very successfull.
They're so lucky to see this live, the audince I mean.
This was the year I was born. What I'd do to be in their place. All I can do is smoke some pot and imagine I was there.
It amazes me that 25 years later this is still at the top of relevance. Probably my favorite album ever.
It’s amazing how many people don’t know Mad season. They’re in a juke box at a local bar I play pool at. I’ll throw some mad season and everyone always ask me who it is.
his voice is what pain would sound like. he could sing anything, and i'd still get choked up.

I long for the clock to roll back to 1995.
RIP to the 🐐
Love hate love at moore as well
KG I'm glad you're still with us, mate, keep on keepin on. Be strong, and tell others when you can, that there is hope and life
I'm happy you beat your demons & you're still here with us today.
Thats how unique his voice was, i hope God and Laynes blesses the Earth with that one day
What a great time it was. And I was luckily in it and a piece of it. This Zeitgeist was wonderful.
Wow!.. Amazing how the echoes of Layne's beautiful voice and personality, still can be heard louder than most sounds of the present.
