This is a true story: When I was 18, we said goodbye to Layne, and I was really sad. I read that layne had a foundation made in his name. I wrote a small letter to them, explaining how much Layne meant to all of us, and a lot of our youth struggles with drugs, depression, etc. I wrote that I was an addict too. Since I was 15. I also sent $1. I was definitely not expecting a letter written back to me from Layne's mom. Her name is Nancy McCullum, and she runs the foundation. She sent me a poster of aic from the Moore Theater, some stickers, and in solemn disbelief, the program from Laynes celebration of life (or funeral) The program had the names Chris Cornell, Mark Lanagan from Screaming Trees, and Nancy and Ann Wilson from Heart. Chris Cornell and Heart did a cover of "Ring them Bells" written by Bob Dylan, and Mark Lanagan read a poem Layne had written. Anyway, I never thought that sending $1 to Laynes foundation would merit anything! Nancy, Laynes mom said encouraging words to me in regards to my opiate dependency. After years of on again off again substance abuse, I'm finally 150 days sober. It gets better. Thank you Nancy, Laynes mom, for the awesome keepsakes, and for giving birth and raising my favorite singer. God bless and take life one day at a time.

I think it's because of the music industry, the record companies, they still determined who gets a contract, who gets played on the radio... it's so sad! But at least a happiness when a band has made it anyway. And Alice is one of the greatest; once you've been a fan, you'll always be a fan! They are just great. Who is capable of such music, can't be an average person.
Record industry dont want it to be popular anymore so they dont push it and therefore people generally dont care. All Genres of music have gotten worse and I know that sounds like something an old person would say but it's the truth.
My sister used to listen to AIC all the time, she took her own life in 2015 when I was 19 back then I was all into rap and hip hop and didn’t see why she liked this music so much so I listened to them after her passing and haven’t stopped this far, I listen to them otw to and home from work they are my favorite band and I understand and feel the lyrics on a level I never could when she was here, all I wanna do is connect with her and sing like Layne and I can’t because it’s too late. Rest in peace Samantha I love you and will forever take on the rock name in our family! ✊🏼
I'm a 53 year old man and I am still baffled how we have not come across an artist such as Layne Staley. His vocals are absolutely amazing, and I'm still grieving his loss. He was such an ambassador of grunge music and I am so honored to have been alive when he was in his prime. I still can't believe him, Kurt and Chris are gone.....but yet, I am so thankful to have been around when they were still putting out iconic music. When I play my guitar to these songs, I get tears in my eyes because I feel so blessed to play them. Godspeed to you Layne, Chris and Kurt. Thoughts and Prayers to our current generation......you will never see a better period than this.
I remember the night this premiered on MTV Headbanger's ball. I was doing my homework and not paying attention much, then suddenly WHAM! This song hit me like a mack truck. I skipped school that Monday, went to Harmony House instead and grabbed the cassette. Sat on the river all day, listening to it in my walkman. Good times.

We got to talking and he straight up said he didn't think Kurt committed suicide...made me kind of dredge up some past memories of conversations back in the day about how he'd had enough heroin in him to kill an elephant and somehow was able to pull a shotty trigger with his toe? Honestly....I have been a drug fan, an alcohol fan (which is a drug), and if you told me I could win a million dollars if I could position a shotgun into my mouth and pull the trigger with my TOE when I was f_cked up.....there is just no way. You would have to be DETERMINED and completely sober to do this I think. Ok so let's say Kurt was a straight up suicide...you have great points around the concept that NOT ALL of these deaths could be attributed to just the nature of the beast of rock music... When I was 27 i moved out west (Eugene, OR) to learn about life. I tried almost everything i could, drink, smoke, snort or ingest EXCEPT heroin.... Too many stories and friends i knew that got hooked. And once you are in (hooked) it's becomes your Master. Nothing else matters until you are dead. but i also learned and loved Grunge (AIC, Pearl Jam, STP and others) Rest in peace Layne and Mike...

I'm 71 years old and listened to rock from its' beginnings. Layne Staley is my all time favorite voice in music. Truly unique. He used different voices in songs. An incredible talent of the likes we will not hear again. RIP Mr. Staley.

I can't imagine not growing up In the years of Pantera, Alice in chains, pearl jam, nirvana, white zombie. That was the best time for rock of all kinds.

Was driving home from methadone clinic at 6:30 in the morning on a cloudy and rainy morning, I’m a 40 year old man and when Layne started the chorus I started crying like a little baby as my past 20 plus years of hopelessness and despair ran through my head.

I think the main reason people underrate 90s guitarists is because the 80s was filled with songs and guitarists who had and played killer solos, where the 90s didn’t have as many insane solos as the 80s did

Layne died 19 years ago today, I started getting into Alice in Chains last year and they are now personally one of my favorite bands and Layne is now personally one of my favorite singers. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, I wish you were still here making music and making us smile.
Such a great song, great band, and to bad Layne Staley and Mike Star had to leave this world so soon. They were amazing musicians, and I grew up listening to them. Today I still like to take a trip down memory lane. As a disabled veteran who has been through a lot these songs help me relate to things. Thank you, Alice in Chains!

is not well known these days but in the early 2000´s and mid 90´s this band was a pillar in the grunge movement with soundgarden, pearl jam and nirvana, its a shame that the only one survivor of the big four is eddie vedder
I work with a few 20 somethings... They know and like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. When asked about Alice they were not entirely sure who they were or what songs they had. I guess this is what I mean by underrated. They are just not held up to the same platform these days as other bands who I think are less than.
Absolutely love AIC. They would play on the music channel on TV every morning while I was getting ready for school. Would get you in a great mindset for the day. One of the best 90s songs ever
Yes, this song had rock diversity- a beat, rawness, wawa guitar, haunting vocals, great lyrics, fantastic traditional guitar riffs, etc. and a synergy where the sum is greater than it's parts. IF someone ever wanted to know what good hard rock is all about- this is the ticket. Should have been one of the items included on the voyager space craft but this group appeared on the scene after the launch of said craft. Lastly- an American band!!!! TRUMP 2024!!!!
@sofiane kurt Bleach wasn't a hit. It also wasn't a grunge album, it's 100% hardcore punk. Nirvana never considered themselves anything but punk rock anyway.
I wouldn't necessarily call it a movement because it happened organically on its own as people burned out on the hair-metal 80s scene. No one engineered or organized it.

All those bands that originally broke it big sounded different. Only the copycat bands that came out after sounded alike. Nirvana was never hardcore punk. Have you ever listened to hardcore punk? It sounds nothing like Nirvana. Bleach is metal with a punk aesthetic. Listen to it, those are metal riffs similar to Black Sabbath which Cobain grew up on. Bleach is their best album IMO. I was a teenager when it came out.
Never bothered getting into Alice in Chains, and then randomly this song comes up as RUclips is just playing randomness while I was driving. Totally changed my life. The way that chorus hits, I feel like Layne is echoing the torment that some of us live with and making it into something inimitably beautiful. He feels like a brother on the other side, someone who could understand this feeling that we feel. Love you Layne. Hope you found your peace.

I had this exact same thing happen to me today. While I had heard this song before and I didn't even know what this song was about, but today I was in a bad mood (and have been for some time) and when that chorus hit I just felt like screaming along with it. There's just something so amazingly relatable in it.
I made a horrible comment about Layne some years ago, about being a junkie etc, and I still feel awful about it. I always loved the music but didn't really understand anything about addiction. He seemed like a really awesome dude who got stuck with his demons, he never denied it, owned it until the end.
It seems to me like it is very hard to understand unless you are in that position. Good on you for maturing and admitting to saying that in the past. All that matters is you understand that it was bad.

Heroin is a fuckin crazy drug that will haunt you till your last days..I was a heroin addict for 6 years and still there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about injecting.. hard to understand it unless you been thru it..
In show business drugs is often involve because very few people can live with the fact that they are products to be chewed on by both their fans and their record labels until they are no longer flavorful. Millions of people like these professionals only because they are rich and famous. It’s that painful realization that their whole self, besides the glamor, is left for dead, unrecognized and unloved, which drove them to drugs to try to forget the reality that surrounds them.
I quit playing out due to the drugs and alcohol..... They never appealed to me. I Love music.... It's the only drug I need. I have played with guys who couldn't play for crap if they weren't under the influence. Some people use drugs as their muse.
So many of grunge icons where addicted to h3r0in, ive heard that you dont even like get "high" or tripping when you do h3r0in, it makes you need it to feeel okay. I don't understand why people try h3r0in. It has ruined so many peoples lives.

I think it's because of the music industry, the record companies, they still determined who gets a contract, who gets played on the radio... it's so sad! But at least a happiness when a band has made it anyway. And Alice is one of the greatest; once you've been a fan, you'll always be a fan! They are just great. Who is capable of such music, can't be an average person.
Record industry dont want it to be popular anymore so they dont push it and therefore people generally dont care. All Genres of music have gotten worse and I know that sounds like something an old person would say but it's the truth.

My sister used to listen to AIC all the time, she took her own life in 2015 when I was 19 back then I was all into rap and hip hop and didn’t see why she liked this music so much so I listened to them after her passing and haven’t stopped this far, I listen to them otw to and home from work they are my favorite band and I understand and feel the lyrics on a level I never could when she was here, all I wanna do is connect with her and sing like Layne and I can’t because it’s too late. I'm a 53 year old man and I am still baffled how we have not come across an artist such as Layne Staley. His vocals are absolutely amazing, and I'm still grieving his loss. He was such an ambassador of grunge music and I am so honored to have been alive when he was in his prime.
I still can't believe him, Kurt and Chris are gone.....but yet, I am so thankful to have been around when they were still putting out iconic music. When I play my guitar to these songs, I get tears in my eyes because I feel so blessed to play them. Godspeed to you Layne, Chris and Kurt.

You would have to be DETERMINED and completely sober to do this I think. DOA @ RGHospital Vernon....walked home 5 hours later & after nearly 5 decades looked up & said ENOUGH...clean since 11.11.2021. An Amazing feat that I survived myself my life's greatest achievement

@@belikethat4871 & so many more, God damn that time in music truly was unlike any other . Quite literally it was every month in those early - to mid 90's that spewed forth to us who were gifted such classic tunes. Damn we were so lucky.
I'm 17, so unfortunately I missed out on all that action, but when I find new metalhead friends, I just feel a sort of immediate bond, its just so rare now to find people who feel the music

I love how his blank stare and dead eyes is juxtaposed with the raw, pained, powerful vocal performance. I can’t even describe the vibe it gives off, all I can say is that it’s really heavy.
I've always thought they wanted to make it that way, and also that in doing it it proves that Lane was so good he didn't need to change his expression, RIP

Trying to make this comment as short as I can. Was driving home from methadone clinic at 6:30 in the morning on a cloudy and rainy morning, I’m a 40 year old man and when Layne started the chorus I started crying like a little baby as my past 20 plus years of hopelessness and despair ran through my head.
Your past comes about and will smack you in your face every now and then!❤ but all we can do is acknowledge it and move forward!! I’m 63 and it’s smacked me a few times ❤️🙏😎🤘

I think the main reason people underrate 90s guitarists is because the 80s was filled with songs and guitarists who had and played killer solos, where the 90s didn’t have as many insane solos as the 80s did

Layne died 19 years ago today, I started getting into Alice in Chains last year and they are now personally one of my favorite bands and Layne is now personally one of my favorite singers. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, I wish you were still here making music and making us smile.

Such a great song, great band, and to bad Layne Staley and Mike Star had to leave this world so soon. They were amazing musicians, and I grew up listening to them. Today I still like to take a trip down memory lane. As a disabled veteran who has been through a lot these songs help me relate to things. Thank you, Alice in Chains!

I work with a few 20 somethings... They know and like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. When asked about Alice they were not entirely sure who they were or what songs they had. I guess this is what I mean by underrated. They are just not held up to the same platform these days as other bands who I think are less than.

Yes, this song had rock diversity- a beat, rawness, wawa guitar, haunting vocals, great lyrics, fantastic traditional guitar riffs, etc. and a synergy where the sum is greater than it's parts. IF someone ever wanted to know what good hard rock is all about- this is the ticket. Should have been one of the items included on the voyager space craft but this group appeared on the scene after the launch of said craft. Lastly- an American band!!!! TRUMP 2024!!!!

@sofiane kurt Bleach wasn't a hit. It also wasn't a grunge album, it's 100% hardcore punk. Nirvana never considered themselves anything but punk rock anyway.
I wouldn't necessarily call it a movement because it happened organically on its own as people burned out on the hair-metal 80s scene. No one engineered or organized it.
@@3Storms It became engineered by the record companies after Nirvana became super stars, that's why bands like Blink 182, Green Day and Sum 41 were doing stadium tours playing pop music with guitar distortion in the late 90s.

All those bands that originally broke it big sounded different. Only the copycat bands that came out after sounded alike. Nirvana was never hardcore punk. Have you ever listened to hardcore punk? It sounds nothing like Nirvana. Bleach is metal with a punk aesthetic. Listen to it, those are metal riffs similar to Black Sabbath which Cobain grew up on. Bleach is their best album IMO. I was a teenager when it came out.
Never bothered getting into Alice in Chains, and then randomly this song comes up as RUclips is just playing randomness while I was driving. Totally changed my life. The way that chorus hits, I feel like Layne is echoing the torment that some of us live with and making it into something inimitably beautiful. He feels like a brother on the other side, someone who could understand this feeling that we feel.

I had this exact same thing happen to me today. While I had heard this song before and I didn't even know what this song was about, but today I was in a bad mood (and have been for some time) and when that chorus hit I just felt like screaming along with it. There's just something so amazingly relatable in it.

I made a horrible comment about Layne some years ago, about being a junkie etc, and I still feel awful about it. I always loved the music but didn't really understand anything about addiction. He seemed like a really awesome dude who got stuck with his demons, he never denied it, owned it until the end.
It seems to me like it is very hard to understand unless you are in that position. Good on you for maturing and admitting to saying that in the past. All that matters is you understand that it was bad.
It's where Trainspotting got its name bud. Addiction, like trainspotting is impossible to understand from outside of that world. I was an addict for a long time, and I know what it's like to try and convey the horrible nightmare it is to the uninitiated. But good for you recognising past opinions and growing from that. In show business drugs is often involve because very few people can live with the fact that they are products to be chewed on by both their fans and their record labels until they are no longer flavorful. Millions of people like these professionals only because they are rich and famous. It’s that painful realization that their whole self, besides the glamor, is left for dead, unrecognized and unloved, which drove them to drugs to try to forget the reality that surrounds them.
I quit playing out due to the drugs and alcohol..... They never appealed to me.
I Love music.... It's the only drug I need. I have played with guys who couldn't play for crap if they weren't under the influence. Some people use drugs as their muse.
So many of grunge icons where addicted to h3r0in, ive heard that you dont even like get "high" or tripping when you do h3r0in, it makes you need it to feeel okay. I don't understand why people try h3r0in. It has ruined so many peoples lives.
