In 1992 I woke up, going to the first day of my freshman year of high school. While eating breakfast this song came on MTV. I'm 45 now and I still remember this like yesterday. Time is terrifying.
Watching music videos before school was my favorite thing. Even with sings that I didn't like sometimes had amusing videos. I was the last generation to appreciate this . I was 5 when this came out , loved this band
Dig Up Dem Bones was a bad-ass album- I used to think Seattle Rock was uh not that good, but, it's actually bad-assed! Too bad most of the legends passed on, (I think the only Seattle Rock band that's still survivin' is Eddie Vedder, of Pearl Jam..)
i turn 30 in august. time is very very terrifying indeed. i feel like it was just yesterday that i found out layne passed. i was 9 years old.
im 26 years old and its my first time listening to this lol

1991 : This song is awesome
2020 : This song is still awesome
Legends never die!
2565 this song is still Awesome
Yes Still awesome 😎
1991: goo goo ga ga
2020: hey i remember this...
No kidding. 2039 this song still rules.
The real sadness behind this song is so profound. Layne wore sunglasses to mask his highness while filming this music video. The song is well-known to be written about close friend and fellow grunge frontman Andrew Wood who died from a heroin overdose. It is a direct embodiment of the feeling of addiction and succumbing to this disease wondering if its ever too late to turn back. Jerry Cantrell wrote it who probably also had his fair share of these struggles.
Layne's performance in this song is so captivating because he is walking the exact path he is singing about, battling the same battle that his friend did and lost. Of course, Layne's passing was heartbreaking and difficult for those around him who saw his decline and wanted to help. So sad that addiction and depression causes you to isolate and mainly hang with other addicts just like what happened with Kurt and Mike Starr. Mike was supposedly the last person to see Layne alive, and after a failed attempt to send him to the hospital, got high himself and blacked out for 2 weeks. Imagine being at rock bottom and your only company are your lifetime friends whose only common ground is being stuck at rock bottom. Mike was one of the only people to stay in touch with Layne, and him the only AiC member he kept in touch with after he was kicked out of the band, because of their shared habit. I'm sure they both wanted each other to get out of there for their sake.
Makes me very mournful for all the talent and their amazing souls that were lost to addiction or depression. Mental health is no joke, it can affect you no matter how successful or unsuccessful you are. Long live those that have overcome these struggles and are still rockin'.
Beautifully written. Thank you.
Yes !! Lost my son as well 😢
I always ask myself, did these musicians fall into this chemical trap because of the musical lifestyle…or did they fall into the trap/ rut long before? As tragic as it is either way… they made their choices… 😢
@@Derandcam Before. I lived in Seattle in the 90's and worked at Deja Vu ( 1st &Pike strip club) where they'd come in a lot. The drug scene was huge and I think that partly it's the depressing weather. Staying in a lot. It was an incredible time, but when Andrew Wood passed things took a dark turn. The music they put out was from their core, and It still blows me away.
Temple of the Dog was also born from the tragic death of Andrew Wood. GREAT ALBUM, some of Chris's best music. FYI.
In my opinion the last 45 seconds is the best 45 seconds in rock history.
"Have I run too far to get home? Have I gone and left you here alone? Am I wrong?" The best lyrics, the best singing, the best drumming and the best guitar phrase I've ever heard in 45 seconds.
The best music!!! Point blank period!

It's a euphoric ending for sure!

When I was 18, we said goodbye to Layne, and I was really sad. I read that layne had a foundation made in his name. I wrote a small letter to them, explaining how much Layne meant to all of us, and a lot of our youth struggles with drugs, depression, etc. I wrote that I was an addict too. Since I was 15. I also sent $1. I was definitely not expecting a letter written back to me from Layne's mom. Her name is Nancy McCullum, and she runs the foundation. She sent me a poster of aic from the Moore Theater, some stickers, and in solemn disbelief, the program from Laynes celebration of life (or funeral) The program had the names Chris Cornell, Mark Lanagan from Screaming Trees, and Nancy and Ann Wilson from Heart. Chris Cornell and Heart did a cover of "Ring them Bells" written by Bob Dylan, and Mark Lanagan read a poem Layne had written. Anyway, I never thought that sending $1 to Laynes foundation would merit anything! Nancy, Laynes mom said encouraging words to me in regards to my opiate dependency. After years of on again off again substance abuse, I'm finally 150 days sober. It gets better. Thank you Nancy, Laynes mom, for the awesome keepsakes, and for giving birth and raising my favorite singer. God bless and take life one day at a time.
Very happy to listen that you're sober now bro. And it was such a nice gesture from his mother.
Keep it up man ! Life can be cruel , but heads up , life is an open road . Stay safe !
*Congratulations*
I'd love to hear the poem?

FACTS
I've always enjoyed alice in chains well enough, but honestly it wasn't until fairly recently that I REALLY got into them and came to love their music..
I grew up watching MTV, rocking out. I was pretty young when grunge was peaking, so it took me awhile to truly appreciate some of those bands. Here today, the more I go back and rediscover alice in chains, the more I love them!! Such an incredible band. Layne had one of the most powerful and haunting, beautiful voices of all time. And Jerry Cantrell is in my opinion criminally underrated!

@@thearmourboy3254this and rooster are probably their best songs. Will admit not as much as a fan of music from this generation but those are good songs. The guitar in the rooster can make you cry. Down in a hole alright too.
Surprised to hear somebody say this. Mtv practically had it on a continuous loop when it was released. It was such a stand out song and video.. one for it breaking a lot of molds of what a rock song could be, a progression that reaches it's titled lyrics at the end and no guitar solo. The video was also refreshing as the long hair metal band mold was breaking down. It took a second to get used to Laynes new look with the slicked back short hair and sunglasses but it was really awesome. I don't know if I agree that it never got the props.. No one will ever believe this, but it is true. When I was 19 years old I wrote endless fan mail to this band. I covered the outside of my letters with art work, made all sorts of jokes using the lyrics of their songs. Even suggested they lift some weights.
About 1 month later I received an envelope in the mail from the band. They all wrote personalized notes to me - every single member of the group. Layne responded to me, writing "What?! You didn't know? I'm doing it for the kids!" They all took a picture flexing, joking back to my comment about hitting the gym.
Through many moves I believe I lost all of those letters. Someday, I hope they turn up in some box I have not looked in or uncovered so that I can share them with everyone else who loved this band. They were the real deal. All of them took the time to write a lonely kid who idolized them and hung on every lyric just to get through the day. It still amazes me that they took the time to make such a personal connection with me. I hope this story adds even more love to those AIC fans who felt the same way I did when I wrote the band. They truly cared about their fans.
Seth Elsom you couldn't have picked a better band I'll tell you I hope you get those letters back
Woo Hoo! ❤️
Back then I'm sure they got high and went through letters like people do today with comments and emails. I'm sure your letters stood out and they appreciated the effort. If you can make a person laugh it means a lot.
I believe it. I live in the Seattle area and my uncle was a nurse in the emergency room of Highline Community Hospital in the mid and late 90s. Mike Starr came into the ER for a heroin overdose one night. My uncle and the crew helped him that night and Mike autographed a Dirt CD and wrote "thank you for saving my life" on it. Unfortunately I think my uncle has lost the CD over the years and after several moves, just like you lost your letters from the band. A female coworker who is still friends with my uncle, likes to remind us that she had to take out Starr's nipple rings before the doctors started working on him.
@Seth Elsom You wrote the name of the band!?

Alice in Chains have never been "grunge". They've always been hard rock. Same with Soundgarden. "Grunge" isn't really a genre, just a description, according to Mark Arm, who supposedly came up with the term (he says he didn't though, as he said the whole idea came from Australia in the 80's). "Grunge" was a ploy to try to box bands into a marketable genre.

I don’t even listen to rock this song is hard as hell
The 90s grunge, rock, and metal scene gave us some of the most unique and iconic vocalists that we will ever hear. Layne, chris Cornell, Jonathan Davis, Eddie vedder, the list just goes on and on
I'm a 54 year old grandmother and I still blast this song EVERY day. Layne was one of rock's greatest gods! 🖤🤘🏻
Dawny ... I'm 62 +1/2 . Married for 42 years/ 2 kids... No grandkid's You are not old. Musical taste has nothing to do with you age. At 62 I also blast this version as well because it's the best one. I like Layne playing "River of Deceit" live at the "Moore" . Very spiritual . When he sang for Mad Season. Same guy different bands. Layne was Layne. His own man. Just like you are your own woman. I respect that very much. Kudos to you & Long live rock rock n roll... cuz I like it yes I do !

Cantrell was the Heart and Mind of AIC, but Staley was the Soul.

+Daniel Toma I couldn't have said it better...or ....prolly...as well. Thanks.
My favorite band of ALL TIME.
This and the unplugged never ages. Still so beautiful, haunting, raw and tragic. RIP Layne, gone but never forgotten.
I grew up with grunge in the 90s. You can't explain it, it was an unique experience nothing like today 😊
Im grew up to
I can't explain either - such emotions
Current kids cannot imagine the freedom we had at that time !

Rip LAYNE... I LOVE YOU!
I've liked this band for many years, but don't know their catalogue that well...never heard this one until now. Agreed...Layne's voice is powerhouse and this song is amazing. I'm a bit older than most of you here at 71. Good music is simply just that. At any age!
Keep rocking man
Know me broken by my master
Teach thee on child, love hereafter
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Drifting body, it's sole desertion
Flying, not yet quite the notion
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
Left you here alone
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home? Yeah
Have I gone?
Left you here alone
If I would, could you?
I have been always like them, sometimes to feel alive one needs to be willing to die, not even wanting to die, but there's no alternative.
Bless you
Perfeito !
you know, the lyrics are said to be about someone who tried suicide...

Layne, you have been gone for 22 years, but I am VERY grateful to you for your voice, your music, it often saves me a lot. Just thank you, an undeniable legend. ❤
Today passes 20 years without Layne. Rest In Peace, old friend.
