That's what I said too. I saw them in Minneapolis/St. Paul,MN. And they were loud & Awesome, as was Cinderella. Roth was making sure he was going to blow Van Halen away! That's why he got Vai & Sheehan. The first 3-4 tours with Van Halen he was good too! (Singing all the words) but Dave has always been a showman fitst!!! All the running around, jumping, all the kicks he does and tbe big split he does at the beginning off the drum riser. If he was even remotely drunk he would break a leg or tear an ACL or hamstring. I spent many years doing martial arts i know. He was awesome on stage. I wish I would've seen him in Van Halen, especially like the Women & Children or Fair Warning tours.

Another note......Roth gets some credit for pushing the band to what we see here. One thing Vai has always mentioned about what he learned from Dave, was that he needed to be in shape. At first he didn't understand why that would be such a big deal to Dave. but he worked for Dave, so he listened. Dave got him running, biking, and eating good. He said playing live, if doing it right, and to respect the audience, is like a sport, and you have to be in shape. Watch Vai and Billy, and you can see how important fitness was to their performance. And of course Greg is arguably putting in the most work.

Plus the partying he did In 82 to 84 was probably a bigger reason why the Van Halen shows were what they were. Lots of people thought Vai was ripping off Van Halen but he was tossed into a position where he had to fill Davids style, like when he had to jump into Yngwie's roll with Alcatraz and Other masters parts with Zappa. He did a lot of emulating, but it also seeded his own style in the process. A style that rivaled all others. But then came Billy, and blew our fucking minds! Billy fucking rules!!!!

what a concert.once in a lifetime.lookin back its amazing that those moments came around and wr never ponder or imagined what a fleeting rare opportunity it was to go.almost mandatory thing.but we just never dreamed that alot of those concerts would be the only opportunity to see alot of bands.either because of short 1 album runs or because of how the powers to be dec ided it was time to perpously end the most magical great era in music history and move to grunge rock.i remember going to slreep one night after another amazing beatiful women filled, all night party, listening to the hair bands doing the real extasy pills as a just finished high school kid.and waking up the next morning and it was all over.i never heard another hair band song on any radio station.i never saw another video on mtv.only grunge bands.
i went to nirvannas last concert in atlanta ,in the omni. before cobane killed hiself....it was nothing like the last concerts i was at not long earlier at the same place.judas priest with dokken opening along with winger. or bonjovi with cindarella opening and kix.the buzz in the air that followed me evrywhere was gone.the chicks were not near as many.not even close.the ones that were there were not as pretty.as joyful or happy .....it was all over .somebody flipped a switch.i hate that person to this day.lol.how could anyone that was anywhere near any of the pieces that were from the era ,decide to end it?they wouldnt have.it came from some old powerful dude that never goes around even otgers that were around it.never leaves their house other than to be cheuffered to the office.someone who didnt like girls or appreciate what and how the music effected their whe mentality.it made girls freindly, happy, want to be beuatiful, and be out late.never wanting to go home.and i really dont think they were doin drugs or not as much as like after it ended and grunge began.up till these days.maybe drinking alot of boons farm.lol.if they only could have felt the electricity and magic in the air during those days.they might be changed like we were.its just hard to capture it in words just how different it was .than any other moment since.its sad that most every one else didnt get to expirience it.

But Van Halen was coming off of 5150..which was awesome, and Eat Em N Smile was right before Van Halen's next album which was appropriately named OU812 in response to the name of Roth's Album name. Some pretty big songs on both 5150 and OU812...then FUCK came out which was perhaps the best Van Halen line up. He did pick a great guitarist to play with him in Steve Vai though. Steve could always write some crazy compositions, and his use of effects are really over the top -- which fit right in with Frank. Steve could write music for anybody -- each member of the band is a different color that Steve uses to paint his picture.

How on earth this level of chemistry could be made with such high-class legends but couldn't make for longer?!?

It was strange because EEAS was a stellar rock album but then a couple years later "Skyscraper" came out and was disappointing --- just a mish-mash of poorly writtten songs

They didn't write any songs. Or couldn't. They were virtuosos but could not write a #1 song or put together a top 10 album. Contrast that with Ed Van Halen who was a virtuoso but also wrote popular songs. Popular songs= money. Jump for example. Hot for Teacher. Look at the songs on the 5150 album.
Being a virtuoso does not mean popularity or making money. To the public you are just an oddball. Now if a virtuoso blends that talent with great songwriting that the public loves, also add a touch of partying reputation and you have a winning combo. That's why DLR failed and Van Halen was so popular (succeeded)

What’s crazy to me is this is just two years out from 1984, Jump. The success VH was having at that time and DLR was able to just kill it with this band they put together.

You can see the genuine respect between Steve and Billy as players. You know it’s real because they’ve gone on to collaborate numerous times over their careers. Fronting these guys was like a night off for DLR.
