Saw these guys play in 1986 with David Lee Roth, for the “Eat ‘em & smile” tour at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto Canada, that band was and still is the best band that I have ever seen and I’m 52 now. Gregg Bissonette was and still is a stellar drummer , too bad he wasn’t there.
I have Billy as Number 1 on my Favorite Bass players video. fan since 1986, My only question to them is when they do these jams several times WHY don't they have Greg Bisonett jam with them? I Know they did once on that " almost DLR Reunion show"
Yeah, I just gave EE&Smile, and Skyscraper a revisit in the last couple days. I was a teenager when those were released, and I had both on cassette. Thinking about how much anticipation there was when Dave put that band together, and wondering how their first album would be received by fans had to be insane. At the time, he left one of the greatest rock bands, and turned around with his new outfit, releasing one hell of a record. Even with all the turmoil & drama, both bands came out swinging, and put out two of my all time favorites (5150 from VH).
Ya well they ARE masters whaddya talkin about? Master isn’t judged by what style “ you” like. 😂. Steve vai is like joined at the hip with guitar. That’s a master of the instrument like big time. I don’t even like all his stylings but to not know he IS a master is to not know what you’re talking about. Sorry
Steve Vai is an amazing player but when I see people tapping guitar like this they always seem to be saying "Look I can do this too" and it reminds me I miss EVH!
It’s a TECNIQUE. It’s like saying “he’s using an assembly line just like Henry ford” cmon man. He’s not the first guy to abuse a whammy bar either but no one revered did it first so…
The tapping thing has gotten so over done at this point though. Bands like Polyphia playing the most soulless, color by numbers music possible and thinking if they play a shitty song really fast and technically well it will be good. Mind you, these dudes were some of the first. I got no beef with Vai or Sheehan, just saying that what they spawned really sucks. It’s a common thing: Rage Against the Machine spawned an entire awful fucking genre of music while they themselves weren’t that terrible.
Yes these guys were some of the first. I used to see Billy’s band Talas in bars and parks all the time as a kid in the mid to late 70s, and he always did a solo during their shows and he was always tapping. It was his thing. His bass solos were crazy. Just amazing the sounds he got out of The Wife. Then EVH came along and everyone said no one’s ever tapped like that before. Maybe not on guitar I’m not certain on that but on bass Billy was already tapping by the time EVH became widely known. So he has every right to do that. He was one of the pioneers of it. Not sure when Eddie or Vai started doing it. I think it’s just another tool. Sometimes it is over done sometimes it appropriate. Depends on the song and who’s doing it.
@@Tyrannosaurine Being "soulless" is subjective, but I strugle to see how Polyphia can be considered "color by numbers". Their style is pretty distinct (at least before eveyone started doing it). At least they're trying something new. Without people like them we would still be listening to Chuck Berry clones. And I really hate this kind of argument; people will pretend they don't care how fast someone can play, then use that as the first argument when criticizing their music. It's equivalent to saying technicality is a negative point, not that it doesn't matter.
@@jeffreyp1855Robert Judd, cast as “Old Scratch”, is my favorite movie version of the Devil. Well, maybe just the name. His high-pitched laugh when he thinks Jack Butler has won, always gets me.😂

John was a great player through and through, but that dude was a tone wizard. I remember the first time I heard the solo from "IsThis Love" I was blown away.

I don’t think impressions you had when you were 15 counts since everything is amazing at that age but you do you!
Why do I still think they were “are” the best. 15 or 52, there were and are the best and I am a musician, have a nice day 😏😏😏
I saw them on the same tour in Hollywood Florida and it is in my top 5 of all time.
With Cinderella opening! At least they did in Philly.
I wish I was around to see that monstrous line up! But at least I got to see Mr Big with the OG formation!
Musicians: "Bass is boring"
Billy Sheehan: "Hold my beer..."
Billy Sheehan singin his butt off, and slaying the bass at the same time. Killin!
5:19 5:27 And adjusting the volume on his bass at the same time.
These guys were great with DLR back in the day… Billy is always one of my fave bass players of all time.
Vai,Billy,and portnoythe masters playrs
Something like the guitar god and the bass god met each other‼️ I really love to see these gods play so free‼️ It's a music in heaven‼️
Best duo ever no one does like these two!

there are MANY great bass players but billy is my fave, i LOVE how he plays it like a guitar!!
The Genius of DLR's Eat Em' and Smile band, find the craziest most talented guys around, give them a basic rock framework, and turn em' loose!

Two masters of Rock! These two play like the recording and better. So awesome!
the paying was pretty good , the singing wAS INCREDIBLE THOUGH.
Three masters of rock.
Billy Sheehan is the GOAT! ❤
you know it
This is proof that it is not needed to be a super shredded player , simple notes and a good show is what makes Vai a great player, love all his shows
He has great notes too :)
uh, I'm pretty sure Shy Boy qualifies as shredding. WTF are you talking about?
But Vai is a “shredder”… 🤷🏻♂️
Uh…what?
🤷🏻♂️
Talas original version ROCKS too!!
Over the top in the best way; killer playing with a great sense of humor!
My favorite guitar player, my favorite drummer and one of my favorite bass players! This lineup needs to release music soooooooooon

ポールギルバートやリッチーコッツェンも素晴らしいギタリストですがこの曲だけはビリーとスティーブで観たいですね。
ビリーとスティーブが並んでるだけでワクワクします。
Oh, the insanity. LOVE
I'm so use to hearing David Lee Roth's voice on Shy Boy that it feels a little disappointing, but Vai and Sheehan are as great as ever
David's vocals were amazing as expected.

6:50 that scream was awesome, wasn't expecting that
Everytime I watch Steve perform I'm waiting for Ralph Machio to come out lol

Let's not forget the Winery Dogs

That's how it's done.
Late 80’s new haven coliseum. Crazy
Still one of the greatest freak out guitar solos ever.
Tried to sing this at karaoke the other night but they didn't have it in the catalog
Thank you, good night. Maybe they’ll play it next show!
GODS.

Frank Zappa, Mister Big,Dream Theater and David Lee Roth live 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
Good thing no one forgot their laptop back then.
lol i get it
DLR band MK1 was insane!
This only bassist that wears a timing chain around his neck to keep the rhytmn going.
When guys just messing around sound better than the rest of us.
やばすぎw
Two masters....awedome.
Pauls killed by steve vai...
What a beatiful sounds...
Greats..😊😢
Fucking beasts!!
The version they did with DLR sounds better.
Vai needs to toss that DS-1. He sounds like an AM radio station in a Ford Pinto.
An when Vai was with Roth there was some serious magic there. Now he just makes noise and weird faces.
Definitely the most outrageous version ever
Billy is the best cause he plays every thing on a bass with his fingers and no pick amazing
Still nothing better than the ORIGINAL Talas track.....come on!!!
Is that Mike portnoy on drums?
Yes, it's in the description.
Billy Sheehan blew Vai away.
I am in awe of Steve Via, I just wish he had a much more masculine tone, John Sykes for example.

Mike Portnoy on drums.

PSA: I didnt see any shyboys in this video
Somebody needs to turn Billy's bass up just a tad!!
Where is David Lee Roth?!
Great stuff. But DLR owns the vocals on this.
Billy's vocals now are better that DLR is now. Dave doesn't even attempt high notes anymore or that last Van Halen tour
