Rob REALLY saved Metallica's ass. They were at such a low point creatively on the music side and chemistry wise on the relationship side. They were on a downward spiral and about to implode. Rob came along and brought a new, younger energy and playing style that breathed life back into the band.
DraxDredd I know that idiot. You misunderstood my comment. It was a joke saying that they don't need anymore eye candy because lars is handsome. Which he obviously is not. Hence the humor...

Dave knows he is 3rd on the thrash list. I'm putting slayer above him too. It's not all about speed. Dave whined about not being in Metallica cuz he wanted that success they had. Metallica grew and grew and got bigger and bigger. Dave kept writing speed metal which was never gonna sell like good hard rock does. Dave would trade his best megadeth albums to have stayed in metsllica
1 million to join our band in 2003......today it would be like 5 million....Robert Trujillo scored big time...great bass player and a multi millionaire....way to go Rob, you make METALLICA sound better
+oneaburns The reality is that they are 50 plus years old. You cant expect a 50 year old to act the same on stage like a 25 year old, specially playing thrash.
Jc333 I wasn't referring to how they act on stage but more the music they are coming up with. It's just filler now. Maybe they're out of good ideas or don't have whatever was fueling them back then.
The rule is you may have enough guitars - 1 or 600 don't matter, but you'll always be searching for a damn pick. "I know I had it in my hand a minute ago!!!"
Saw Metallica at AT&T stadium in Arlington last September and it was an amazing experience. Robert was a beast out there on stage, his presence and enthusiasm brought the performance to life. So glad he was the one they chose as their 4th man. He truly deserves it.
Games Braun its possible im just a not very experienced bassist (im not) but from my mind cliff's playing seems way more powerful. really powerful. maybe he is overrated. but he had a _feel_ which i love
If John Myung would have done audition their review would be hilarious. It would be like: I don't know how the fuck this guy is playing our songs so easily with that level of boredom but that is definitely not the energy we need on stage. Especially when they were so surprised Trujilo could play their songs so well.
lol I can be the same way, not showing any emotion. That's just the kind of guy I am. I haven't performed live but I can imagine myself trying to put on some sort of show with facial expressions.
No. The speed of a vinyl record. You are definitely younger than me. I had a feeling that would stump some people. It's basically playing it at near double speed.
Everyone thinks Lars is an asshole, but I think every successful band needs one of those. You got the body, the heart, the voice, the soul...and the asshole. Beatles, Stones, Sabbath, Zeppelin...there's always an asshole to those bodies of work. Its like Pacino said in a movie: " Every family's got one"
Lars was in a way the founder of Metallica and he named the band. Furthermore he was the one that made the first published recordings possible... He might not be a good musician but his doing made Metallica popular.
"it's not about what he says, it's about what I feel." such a fuckin lars thing to say and for James to come in and completely shut him down was great. 1:56
When you have a lot of money, people are constantly looking for any excuse to sue you and take some of it. Would you just give it away to be "rock n' roll"? It's fine if you don't like him but it's not fair to fault him for wanting to protect his earnings.
+Tokiofritz I can tell you don't have much money yourself.....if you were a superstar on Lars level, you would be talking about money constantly, like him....actually it's like the most stupid myth ever that you just make art and money comes flowing. Music is a business like any other and all rockstars have to take care of their finances or else they end up being fucked up by everyone around them that wants a piece of their money or fame. I'd like to see you working at your day job just for love and never talking about money because you're such a spritual person. Lol.
0GR3 Gaming Yeah. PROFESSIONAL artists who actually make it outside their mom's basement and outside those dark clubs where only like 20 emos get high on weekends.....have to take care of the business part of music....whether you agree or disagree with it. Or how exactly did you thinkyour favorite bands toured all around the planet and bought their instruments and paid people to record their album??? With bananas and your love behind a computer???? Lol.
Hollywood Devil or if it had killed lars instead and they had a good drummer. imagine how much better theyd be live. or you know if neither of them had died, and lars actually practiced *playing* instead of showboating...thatd be cool too. and what bucket said too. if they wanted to do all that blues metal crap..not to mention whatever the hell else it is theyve been trying to do while calling it metallica... they should have had a different band for it. ive been aware of their music since the black album...you know...keeping up...hoping theyd be metallica again. hasnt happened yet. the last album i bought was the black album. i wouldnt take their new stuff if lars himself "downloaded it illegally" for me. nothing against the bass player. nothing against kirk. theyre cool.
***** they've gotten out of touch with metal, and seemed more worried what people think about them, that they forgot why they started being a band in the first place
***** Ouch...You shouldn't be anticapating the death of someone either way man. They are still people like you and I but they have no idea what they are doing in the mainstream now.
Yeah dude that was very well put.. Jason newsted was an awesome bassist(still is always will be) that he took the band to a higher plateau as Cliff and Rob did
“He was the first guy of any of them that didn’t look like he was struggling with it.” Yeah, those bass lines have always pushed professional musicians to their absolute limits.
Thanks for uploading this in 240p. I have SEVERE brain damage and anything above 240p reminds me of what life was like before I got SEVERE brain damage.
+bernabas73 most likely no he wouldn't actually, their personality and style has changed so much that he isn't their style anymore. most things they say in this video is really wise
+Cyramor11 A change in personality and style that happened because Cliff was no longer there. Unlike Jason, Cliff was a big factor in Metallica's creative direction. From Cliff's death to this audition Metallica had become what Lars, James, Kirk, to a degree Bob Rock, and mostly Lars had made it. With some old reports surfacing, it seems that if Cliff lived one of two things would have happened: Cliff would have left or Lars would have been booted. If the former happened and Metallica made similar if not the same decisions with the band direction, this video would not exist. Because Cliff would be hired back with the Metallica collective begging, "Help Us! We screwed up and we don't know how to fix it. Help US!"
Probably because James is just as bad as Lars, and those two think alike. Lars is also that guy to James in such a way, that any negative opinion that could make the band look bad. Lars says it all, and takes the heat. Keeping James looking like the good guy. The hate on Napster, both of them. Wanting the bass turned down on AJFA? Both. But yet, Lars is the asshole, especially in any interview. That's only what I heard anyways. Also, I can't see how a person can be around somebody like Lars and not be a dick to some degree.
There is 2 wrong thoughts about this album. "What shit is it?" and "What is it? Thats cool!". Second is.. i don't know what about him. But first just not trying to understand artist and album, or just dont need it. Album simlpe, controversal, but it was about things that realy happens with this guys. Its kinda honest art, without trying to be someone else.
Can’t tell you how much I deplore the day James started to believe he could sing and Lars that he mattered. Metallica’s first 5 albums are fantastic save for Lars holding Jason newkid’s bass balls. Many kids became fans of the black album but it was the moment I realized I was OUT.
+Rambo28 This movie edited stuff down to look like a direct story the way a reality show does, I'd bet a lot of stuff is shown weeks out of sequence in this clip. Rob actually had a "callback" audition with the band where they pretty much knew they wanted to hire him but needed to hang out/jam with him some more... I'm guessing it's the second time he jammed with them he didn't have a bass, as he was staying at Lars's house and also borrowing a t-shirt of Lars (who took him out and got him shitfaced the night before, he's hungover as fuck in a few of these scenes) He told the story on Marc Maron's WTF podcast recently. There's also cut scenes from between his two auditions showing that the band's management suggested they use Trujillo for the Raiders parking lot gig, but they object that he "isn't even in the band yet" and used Bob Rock instead.
Bob Jones And slack off... and and and... Not giving a shit cus we have millions of fans and millions of dollars and we have nothing to lose.. so why give a fuck!!.. LOL
"If Cliff Burton showed up today maybe he wouldn't be the guy" How the hell can Lars say this and then use one of Cliff's signature bass riffs as the benchmark by which they measure all the would be suitors?
i come here from watching janes addiction videos to see eric avery and then i watch this video again and lars seems to be in his own world james too slightly kirk sorta out on his own
Because they are not the same persons they were when they started. They grew up and changed their style, as well as their motive. The reason Lars said that was because they are different then they were 30 years ago, and when they got Cliff, their goal was to rule the world and get drunk/fucked up. Now, when 22 years later, they hold a new audition, and their motives and personality changed. Thats why :) And I am sure they all played more songs than For Whom..
Sander Børresen And that may be true, however I still think it's a bit disingenuous of Lars to make that comment about Cliff when it was Cliff's contributions that have made Metallica what it is. And I agree that they probably didn't make their decision based on well the candidates could play the first thirty seconds of "Bells" but I doubt if anyone during the rehearsal process raised their hand and said "Hey now lets do "Fixxxer".
I heard because of Sharon Osbourne they use to Penny pinch the backup band. At least they did when Jake E Lee was in the band he didn't get credit for the songs he wrote on Bark at the Moon. But on the ultimate sin album he made sure he got paid for writing those songs.
@@alexanderwalle3568well it was an “advance” mil of future earnings he will be making with the band so he had to pay that mil back when he started earning money with the band. They basically treated him how the record labels do it with an advance to anyone they sign. Deff not a bad business expenditure by the band, even if it had been a 1M contract signing payment I think he brought enough value to have it have been a good investment.
My first live intro was to Newstead and I loved him and his non stop headbanging kept me going when the drugs wore down in mosh pits 😅, But Rob is the man who can really jam!!
Gregory Geloewski James did clarify that it was an ''advance on a percentage'' so I took that to mean that he was getting his first however long's percentage cut up front as opposed to how you put it i.e. a million and ALSO a percentage to follow. That's just how I took it though.
When Rob was young and jumped up and down on his bed playing bass, all his friends laughed--if it were me, my old bed would have been a permanent part of my act and the stage (grudges with me never end).
So is your opinion, dont curse on music style, its a personal thing. I belive you are jealous you cant play, then, its easier to curse about. If you try, i bet you would like, very fun and challenging. Bye
Not a Death Metal fan myself, but they are just too good for anything Metallica does. If you put, say, Jeroen Paul Thesseling on Metallica he would be so out of place and so limited.
Totino's Other Boy So tell me then what's the difference? Is bass just another guitar? Or is it a balance with the drums to give the band a solid beat? A pick gives a bass a guitar sound which it is not. It is bass.
Kirk: "It hadn't been played that way since Cliff." Well considering you only had one other bass player between cliff and rob and that bass player played with a pick, that's pretty obvious
Bradley S Hiring a therpist was one thing. But then make a movie about it? What were they thinking? In 1985 they made fun of bands that got to big and let their egos run wild.....and that's exactly what Metallica did with "Monster." It didn't piss me off as much as it saddened me.
"when you say what WE are feeling, you really mean what I AM feeling"---- James Hetfield's nice way of telling Lars: "You are trying to ignore our opinion our new bass player, asshole, but I also have a say on this".
@@AustinHansen He wouldn't be happy as a "Yes Sir" player and no real creative input. Rob is a great player, but also seems content on playing in bands he has no real creativity in like Ozzy, Suicidal, etc.
Cliff Burton was ok, I personally liked the way he played, he got style and presence on stage, but this new guy is simply amazing! I saw the entire concert on the AT&T previous to the Superbowl 50 and I was amazed. I'm not talking about Metallica's performance that night, I'm talking about ROBERT that night! Simply WOW! PLUS the guy's cool! He seems to be nice, respectful but kick-ass and arrogant at the same time! Weird I know... Perfect fit for the band!
If your Dad likes trains, you'll like trains, too; if your Dad loves his Schnauzer, you'll also love your Schnauzer; if your Dad is Gary Coleman you're probably going to also be short, in show business and groping tall, white women; if your Dad is in a band called "Suicidal Tendencies" you, too, will be "Institutionalized" someday (no one can escape this).
He was right to kill napster. Napster was manipulating their catalogue without permission. It's called theft. Anyone who doesn't understand why napster was wrong is ignorant and needs to leave because they are late for their shift at walmart
It was pointless of him to waste so much time fighting Napster. If I bought an mp3 from, say, iTunes and gave copies of that mp3 to all of my friends, is that any different from what people on Napster were doing?
Alan Lloyd Napster took money and power in the music industry away from the record companies that have played a central role in turning the music industry into the abomination it is today. There is much honor is pirating music. You got it backwards as far as your Walmart comment, in the modern world, great musicians create their own label and give out most of their music free in a lot of cases. Only entitled greedy little shits in the industry care about napster and free music downloading, and of course struggling musicians who got fucked over by their label contracts, but mostly greedy dicks.
+Paulo Mondaca They must have used the very best footage of Trujillo and not-so-good footage for everyone else. They would want to make their new band member look as good as possible.
***** I see what you're saying. But my point is that they (or at least whoever edited this) crafted this thing deliberately to show that they made the best choice possible. They have an interest in doing that. Not that they didn't choose the best guy, but the other guys are pros too, as you know, and I'd bet they had their moments.. Smear might be too strong a word, unless "they're just not as good" (it's 10% over their ability) is a smear to another pro musician.
+Paulo Mondaca Well, it is fretted bass so there is not much of reason to be really out of tune. Unless their octaves are not set right or if they bend too much, which none of them did. They are proffesional bassists, they know how to tune their instrument. Also that riff is in chromatic scale, so it might feel a bit sharp in some way and of course, tempered tune feels a bit diffirent on every bass. That's what I think.
ikr, "Me Lars! You not Lars!" His dad's really cool though. Torben. Really laid back. He used to live in Seattle and shop in the grocery store I worked at. He always wore tennis shorts, even if it was snowing out XD! Lars isn't like him at all. Don't know what happened there.
***** Why does Bill Gates live here? He could live anywhere too. Or Craig McCaw, Charles Simonyi, Gabe Newell...? In fact, why does anyone live here? That's weird -_- Torben lives in Tiburon CA now. He was a member of the board of directors for Velocity Dance Center here in Seattle. He also produced and performed in numerous dance recitals such as Cacophony for 8 Players. Also, he's from Denmark. Do you know what the weather's like in Denmark? I'm sure Seattle rain didn't bother him a bit.
Shame really, he has one of the heaviest bass tones and is an amazing player. Kyuss is awesome, Unida too, but here he sounds like an amateur probably because of the setup.
Zach Purcell Thanks Zach - I guess my comment only translates through if you already know the talk that Ulrich is the weak link in this metallic chain though. IMHO (dont want to start a flame war here) if the other members of the band held the same standard they would never have come this far.
nights312312 In my humble opinion, and not being a die hard metallica fan, I think Lars is/was fine. I mean, yes, they could have had a better drummer, but I liked the personality he brought to the group. Plus I give them serious props for sticking together. A lot of bands, like Journey for example, have like 2 original members left. I'd rather remember their identity than the specifics of their musical prowess
i remember seeing Rob for the first time on the MIAWTW tour in 2003. it was the first time pretty much anyone in the building had seen him live. as soon as the band took the stage, all eyes were on him, and it clicked pretty much instantly. he was so fun to watch, he had an enormous sound, his solo was insane, and he brought a new vibe to the band that was very much needed. that said it is very funny that 20 years later many still consider him “the new guy” 😂
+Marcos Salustiano Trujillo is a beast, unfortunately he doesn't get to show it much with Metallica. only one studio album in 13 years. Poor guy, he cannot be happy just touring with a legacy act that's playing at half their former speed and power. but hey, money is really good so..
Fucking Lars early on was a beast on the drums, its metal drumming tons of bands use off timing in drums. But I can tell you Lars can keep time, he just old and most likely doesnt practice as he once did.

trujillo was one of the best things that ever happened to metallica
Clif dead distroy metállica
joshAKAtheman agreed man, maybe with him metallica didn't made the best songs, but he's got anything that make the old songs sound very interesting, like orion for example.
joshAKAtheman Getting a real drummer would be even better!
+joshAKAtheman except for saint anger
+muhammed ehab St. Anger was Bob Rock on Bass
Rob REALLY saved Metallica's ass. They were at such a low point creatively on the music side and chemistry wise on the relationship side. They were on a downward spiral and about to implode. Rob came along and brought a new, younger energy and playing style that breathed life back into the band.
***** Hahaha What, Lars isn't handsome?? Hahaha
Well James is pretty popular too, as Kirk (in his younger years)
+WILD THINGS he meant rob dumb fuck
DraxDredd I know that idiot. You misunderstood my comment. It was a joke saying that they don't need anymore eye candy because lars is handsome. Which he obviously is not. Hence the humor...
+WILD THINGS Alright chill your boots ur comment came across as autistic
"Hasn't been played that way since Cliff.".... still gives me chills
Me too man!
I agree, looks like he is been there for a while. Robert was the right choice 🤘
u do realize cliff was far over qualified as is rob. the band is a trash garage project since decades ago. my favorite part was james singing that badly voice cracking probably BAC WAY over the limit thinking i need another twenty rehabs. i want to get back to the days i made fun of layne staley in rehab and got a shoe thrown at my head. AIC FANS NEVER FORGET
Wish this video was about finding a new drummer.
Very funny comment indeed.
Ulrich made watching Some Kind of Monster painful but in short videos like this one, I find his dickishness hilarious.
It's not about how you feel, it's about how I feel
plastic guitars are gay
Wish I could give you 100 thumbs up for that comment.
Boognish no, thanks hater. Don't Cry. 36 years crying.
Can you guys even fucking imagine?? All those years listenin and looking up to these guys and one day they're just like we love how you make us sound, here's a million dollars plus years of playing in front of hundreds of thousands of people.. I mean. I would cry dude. That feeling must be something out of this world.
I saw Metallica years ago, they cheat the hard parts.
@@alexanderwalle3568 I know dude. I think it’s criminal how they play blackened now. They’ve also never been able to play certain parts of great songs because of Lars which blows. Homie doesn’t even practice. Would be nice to hear dyers eve every once in a while but full force.
@@BuLLeT2431 I agree with you on some parts, but you gotta remember man, everyone gets old. While it sucks that they might take shortcuts, theyre still out there rocking, and doing their best, trying to make people happy and excited about metal and music in general, Thats what really counts
The way he was like, blushing when they told him all of that, like he doesn't know how great he is 😭 Trujillo is a legend ❤
The point is that they are NOT doing their best. They arent that old. Thats a cop out.@@SwoopBoozer
I wish Les Claypool just showed up to *this* auditioning.
Just to piss Lars off.
lol! that'd been awesome!! XD
right!
What if he played a slap bass version of each song too XD theyd preobably be like "get the fuck out of here"
Just as well they didn't audition Dave Slave, They wouldn't keep up with him
Dave knows he is 3rd on the thrash list.
That’s always my favorite part of the doc. Robert looks so happy and humble, and his playing is dope
1 million to join our band in 2003......today it would be like 5 million....Robert Trujillo scored big time...great bass player and a multi millionaire....way to go Rob, you make METALLICA sound better
Now if only they could get that spark back and write some songs like their old days.
+Mattiswhereitsat Mattiswhereitsat A million in 2003 is worth 1.293 million today.
+oneaburns The reality is that they are 50 plus years old. You cant expect a 50 year old to act the same on stage like a 25 year old, specially playing thrash.
Jc333 I wasn't referring to how they act on stage but more the music they are coming up with. It's just filler now. Maybe they're out of good ideas or don't have whatever was fueling them back then.
inflation isn't 500%. just saying.
if they have 600 guitars can you imagine how many picks cables strings pedals they have lol
Austin Hazlewood and that was back in 2002 or 3, how many do they have now?
Lol true
well, you don't need more picks, cable and pedals if you have that many guitars. for the strings, I bet it was something about 3.600 of them :)
At least a dozen of them.
The rule is you may have enough guitars - 1 or 600 don't matter, but you'll always be searching for a damn pick. "I know I had it in my hand a minute ago!!!"
let's admit it, not only is he the best player but he flat out looks the coolest when he plays.
"Danny" also doesn't fit with the band, plus, when you try to leave Nine Inch Nails the Eight Inch Nails immediately know.
@@alexanderwalle3568The eight inch nails don't forget
I think Metallica knows best.
100 percent!

Saw Metallica at AT&T stadium in Arlington last September and it was an amazing experience. Robert was a beast out there on stage, his presence and enthusiasm brought the performance to life. So glad he was the one they chose as their 4th man. He truly deserves it.
Bob Rock hated them all. He had his hopes on getting the gig and making it official he was part of the band.
*****
That's a way to protect your ego when you know something you want won't happen.
***** Yeah I'm just thinking back to the making of black album tapes
***** There is footage of a really small show they did under a different name with Rock on bass.
***** Fuck yea Chippa, tss double guns.
***** If you saw this movie you know that a biggest problem in Metallica is a James.
Robert Fucking Trujillo, ladies and gentlemen...
but absolutely nothing next to cliff burton
+Udit Dey
cliff was overrated
Games Braun its possible im just a not very experienced bassist (im not) but from my mind cliff's playing seems way more powerful. really powerful. maybe he is overrated. but he had a _feel_ which i love
biasa aja brow
Mark Valencia the shit man?
If John Myung would have done audition their review would be hilarious. It would be like: I don't know how the fuck this guy is playing our songs so easily with that level of boredom but that is definitely not the energy we need on stage. Especially when they were so surprised Trujilo could play their songs so well.
lol I can be the same way, not showing any emotion. That's just the kind of guy I am. I haven't performed live but I can imagine myself trying to put on some sort of show with facial expressions.
Jesus, Myung was playing Maiden on 78 speed when he was a teenager. Bad motherfucker right there.
+Shawn Marshall What do you mean 78 speed? 78 BPM?
No. The speed of a vinyl record. You are definitely younger than me. I had a feeling that would stump some people. It's basically playing it at near double speed.
+Shawn Marshall Yeah I knew I would be wrong lol
I love coming back to this video watching so many people’s dreams be made in Robert.
Yeah, once James asked me if I want to play in Metallica for 1 million bucks, I said I want but I dont have that money.
True story.
LMAO!
lol nice
+Ivan “Dark Knight” Miloš I award your house 50 points.
+Ivan “Dark Knight” Miloš That's amazing the competition ...........It's like the Chili Peppers guitarist....Chemistry ...The process is fascinating
They should have paid Benicio del Toro a million to punk the band with a wig.
First thing I thought when they chose Robert was:
"Now let's see you try that hazing shit on HIM"
+thatonedrewguy Ha! The ass kicking they would get back. Would love to see that. lol
haha..exactly.....
After four cases of Coors, Rob would have started snorting heroin just to see what James would do.
You, I like you.
Perskij Ericson who was the stones and Zeppelin
In what movie Pacino said that?
Михаил Исайя Scent of a woman
Lars was in a way the founder of Metallica and he named the band. Furthermore he was the one that made the first published recordings possible...
He might not be a good musician but his doing made Metallica popular.
"it's not about what he says, it's about what I feel." such a fuckin lars thing to say and for James to come in and completely shut him down was great. 1:56
Rob kicked ALL their arses in the audition. He took the solo and made it his own.
Lars talking about money without his harem of lawyers present? That might be the most rock and roll thing I've seen him do.
Lol.
+Kaylasa JaguarStar Real artists worry about money? Riiiight.
Lol.
Kaylasa JaguarStar
It's that kind of mentality that has turned art into a commodity. You might as well listen to Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.
I wonder what Metallica would be like today if that bus crash never happened?
VoodooWhore Probably not sell-outs.
Hollywood Devil
or if it had killed lars instead and they had a good drummer. imagine how much better theyd be live.
or you know if neither of them had died, and lars actually practiced *playing* instead of showboating...thatd be cool too.
and what bucket said too. if they wanted to do all that blues metal crap..not to mention whatever the hell else it is theyve been trying to do while calling it metallica... they should have had a different band for it.
ive been aware of their music since the black album...you know...keeping up...hoping theyd be metallica again. hasnt happened yet. the last album i bought was the black album.
i wouldnt take their new stuff if lars himself "downloaded it illegally" for me.
nothing against the bass player. nothing against kirk. theyre cool.
Damn, could you imagine? Twiggy in Metallica?
zim zum Jeordie's great, but Trujilo smashed it.
+fran jaff I know. its just twiggy in metallica is such a weird combination.
zim zum Yeah, definitely not his usual style.
zim zum Big no no!!... ermm.. no... still no ...LOL!!
diaphanoux i agree, the idea of twiggy in metallica doesn't compute in my brain.
Never give up on your dreams.
Millions of bass players think the same thing.
"MAybe if Cliff Burton showed up today, he wouldn't be the guy either"
+Trevor Scott Wrong!!
Help US!"
+Trevor Scott If Lars auditioned as Metallica's drummer today he wouldn't be the guy either.
Maybe Cliff wouldn't want to join what they've become? But dbags like Lars would never think of that...
That hair flip from Lars at 6:25 confirms everything we need to know... LOL
How has James put up with Lars all these years.
Mountains upon mountains of never ending cash.
With the help of one Mr. Daniels. First name Jack :P
Razorfish they've been friends for so fucking long that he probably doesn't even notice Lars is a dick
Now we know why they had to hire a therapist to work with them... I would have been cheaper, but not licensed in CA...
The fact that I don't know the first song James is singing in the studio, makes me happy.
+klefdnb you dont wanna know the song, or the album for that matter. Consider yourself lucky
The song is called "Frantic"
I assumed it was something they were doing for Metalocalypse,
It's Frantic from St. Anger
3:35 that is the stupidest face ive ever seen anyone make
That's cause Lars is I Cunt with a capital "C"
+Josh White 4:04
PERIOD!
EXCLAMATION POINT!
+Josh White lmao i love you dude. i thought the same thing.
What about 4:04?
Can’t tell you how much I deplore the day James started to believe he could sing and Lars that he mattered. Metallica’s first 5 albums are fantastic save for Lars holding Jason newkid’s bass balls. Many kids became fans of the black album but it was the moment I realized I was OUT.
Now that Rob said he was hangover during the audition, his reaction makes more sense.
He stayed Suicidal.
@@alexanderwalle3568 You could say that it was because of his tendencies
Rob auditions for the biggest band in metal history and doesn't bring his own bass to the audition?
+Rambo28 He knows he's that good.
It's because he doesn't need to. He got the job afterall, didnt he?
+Rambo28 I'm pretty sure that he was told he wouldn't be needing his gear. Turns out he didn't, either.
+Rambo28 ...WHOA! Pump your brakes there kiddo. "biggest band in metal history"? Ever heard of a little band called BLACK SABBATH? LMAO
Lars-"can you play that fast with your fingers?" Can you play that fast with your drums
That's a side effect of a strange phenomenon known commonly as "not practicing."
Bob Jones
And slack off... and and and... Not giving a shit cus we have millions of fans and millions of dollars and we have nothing to lose.. so why give a fuck!!.. LOL
This comment made me laugh 😂
They don't drug-test, either, is why a lot of out-of-work bass players were there.
i was gonna comment this 💀
Lars: “Battery! You can play that fast with your fingers?”
Everyone in the room turns and looks at Lars, all thinking the same thing!
"If Cliff Burton showed up today maybe he wouldn't be the guy" How the hell can Lars say this and then use one of Cliff's signature bass riffs as the benchmark by which they measure all the would be suitors?
i come here from watching janes addiction videos to see eric avery and then i watch this video again and lars seems to be in his own world
james too slightly
kirk sorta out on his own
Because they are not the same persons they were when they started. They grew up and changed their style, as well as their motive. The reason Lars said that was because they are different then they were 30 years ago, and when they got Cliff, their goal was to rule the world and get drunk/fucked up. Now, when 22 years later, they hold a new audition, and their motives and personality changed. Thats why :)
And I am sure they all played more songs than For Whom..
D Marshall Well, he only said "Maybe" but who the hell knows, Lars is a bit of a nutcase :)
If Cliff showed-up he would have had half his head caved-in and a wheelchair.
he got a small loan of $1 million

I heard because of Sharon Osbourne they use to Penny pinch the backup band. At least they did when Jake E Lee was in the band he didn't get credit for the songs he wrote on Bark at the Moon. But on the ultimate sin album he made sure he got paid for writing those songs.
You know you've mastered bass when you get offered $1,000,000 to join metallica
Or that they don't know how to manage their money.
Can you imagine. ... a million bucks just to join a band plus percentage .... on top of playing for one of the biggest bands of all time??? Just wow!!
Gregory Geloewski and the guy have been playing with some good bands before, i think he played for Ozzy before that and he told Rob to audiotion.
Brunlera Check out Anger Rising Jerry cantrell.. He's there too.
Robert trujillo was literally the best choice between all of the other bass players
Marc Bou Saleh Pepper didn't look bad, considering he mostly plays guitar.
If you think about it that kinda means they had to settle for what they had
Pepper would have also called Salt-N-Pepa telling them the good news.
Robert or Chris Wyse..Both great bassists
they've never seen a technical death metal bass player before....
Still haven't...
Death metal is garbage.
Diego Garcia lmao...this band isn't death metal
Robert truly deserved this. And after all these years we all know how right that decision was.

did anyone BUT rob actually TUNE THEIR BASS?!
How funny would it have been if Jason showed up to audition just to troll a lil. 😂
Rob had no match in this. He was BY FAR the best one there
"your going to end up in the same situation you did with jason" oh so bullying the fuck out of a extremely talented player
His backup vocals were amazing and he contributed a lot lyrics wise
Rob is a much better bassist. Jason was better vocally but c'mon he plays with a pick.
Toxic Potato Um, pretty much everything.
SiLenT366 quit being a bass hipster
Totino's Other Boy So tell me then what's the difference? Is bass just another guitar? Or is it a balance with the drums to give the band a solid beat? A pick gives a bass a guitar sound which it is not. It is bass.
Kirk: "It hadn't been played that way since Cliff."
Well considering you only had one other bass player between cliff and rob and that bass player played with a pick, that's pretty obvious
Absolutely shocked that Hulk Hogan didn't audition for this.
Twiggy is probably my favorite bassist out of all those guys.
TheRUclipsr mine too
He went to high school in Florida.
Lars was such a tool in SKOM. They should have chucked the therapist on drums and fired Lars instead.

Meister Dejv Wow, that's a good read, thanks. It's probably too late to get rid him now too.
They're all tools. They deserve each other.
Bradley S Hiring a therpist was one thing. But then make a movie about it? What were they thinking? In 1985 they made fun of bands that got to big and let their egos run wild.....and that's exactly what Metallica did with "Monster." It didn't piss me off as much as it saddened me.
+Meister Dejv I doubt that really happened.
"when you say what WE are feeling, you really mean what I AM feeling"---- James Hetfield's nice way of telling Lars: "You are trying to ignore our opinion our new bass player, asshole, but I also have a say on this".
Can you imagine how it would feel for Metallica to tell you “you make us play better.” There’s no better compliment for a musician.
I teared up watching them ask Trujillo to join.

I appreciate how clean Lars is, his hair has been wet through the whole thing.
I cant believe Robert has been with the Band for over 21 years jeez
I wish Les claypool won
John Brown I personally think Les wouldn't fit well with Metallica
I am glad he didn't. I think joining into a band like metallica while being such an enigmatic, artistic, character would stifle his creativity
Nah. His playing style is way different
The guy eating the egg roll was thinking how the entire process was similar to the last time he had jury duty.

Lars Ulrich
Can't even keep tempo, plays the same kick snare kick snare every album stop feeling you suck

+Alan Lloyd I agree better than megadeth but search Lars Ulrich fails and you'll see why he sucks
AdamR702 make a video of you drumming and then you can talk.
Man this was Lars trying to make Robert feel welcome and feeling weird about leaving him alone and everyone's hating on him for it. Weird
Now if they could only find a new drummer.=
He was right to kill napster. Napster was manipulating their catalogue without permission. It's called theft. Anyone who doesn't understand why napster was wrong is ignorant and needs to leave because they are late for their shift at walmart
....it was a p2p site....still happens to this day....so what did he really accomplish with Napster?

They have an interest in doing that. Not that they didn't choose the best guy, but the other guys are pros too, as you know, and I'd bet they had their moments..
Smear might be too strong a word, unless "they're just not as good" (it's 10% over their ability) is a smear to another pro musician.
+Paulo Mondaca I noticed that too, all were out of tune except for that one decent looking guy and Trujillo ofcourse.
The perfect choice.. Robert ate that bass with his fingers, and he is still hungry... 🔥🔥🔥
Lars, Lars, Lars everything has to be about Lars!....
By the way, What was he doing there @ 06:18
you got me fuckin dying about 6:18 im laughing way more than i should be
ikr, "Me Lars! You not Lars!"
His dad's really cool though. Torben. Really laid back. He used to live in Seattle and shop in the grocery store I worked at. He always wore tennis shorts, even if it was snowing out XD!
Lars isn't like him at all. Don't know what happened there.
*****
Downtown waterfront, near Pike Place Market.

Why is that weird?
*****
Why does Bill Gates live here? He could live anywhere too. Or Craig McCaw, Charles Simonyi, Gabe Newell...? In fact, why does anyone live here? That's weird -_-
Torben lives in Tiburon CA now.
Lmao Scott Reeder epic fucking fail, I almost fell of my chair laughing.
It's sad because he's actually an awesome bassist.
Shame really, he has one of the heaviest bass tones and is an amazing player. Kyuss is awesome, Unida too, but here he sounds like an amateur probably because of the setup.
Playing that riff with the strings upside down is actually quite difficult. As a left-handed bassist myself, I know that.
Kyuss never drink any water, you can tell from their album covers.
10% over their capability, said by Ulrich...
Yeah that was fucking ridiculous.
***** No, he's just pointing out the irony that Lars himself is 10% over capability (not saying I agree. Just translating what the other dude said)
Zach Purcell That's exactly what I meant. Thanks.
And we end up with St. Anger for all of this....
James Robert I wonder how Rob felt about that album personally.
"10% over there abilities" Lars every metallica song is 75% over your ability...
Trujillo is a beast.
this guy rock a lot with suicidal and now with Metallica.
+Marcos Salustiano Trujillo is a beast, unfortunately he doesn't get to show it much with Metallica. only one studio album in 13 years. Poor guy, he cannot be happy just touring with a legacy act that's playing at half their former speed and power. but hey, money is really good so..
I never was a Metallica fan, or a metal fan in general, but Some Kind of Monster was such a great documentary. Watched it many times.
Scott Reeder's bass was fucking bad ass looking.
+DXfilmzzz It's an Ibanez ATK bass, check them out.
Looked good, sounded like ass though. He did fantastic for Kyuss but talk about out of his element with Metallica. And I am a massive stoner rock fan
4:35 oh Lars, If cliff auditioned today you wouldn't be playing Bells in the audition...
Question 1: how do you feel playing with a drummer that can't keep time to save his life?
And sounds like a kid banging on an empty paint tin!
Who plays drums so bad his hair is running away from him
+Dr. Rockso Who's a Rock n roll clown that does cocaine?
Alfredo Lopez question 1: where were you during the Metallica drummer auditions ?
Fucking Lars early on was a beast on the drums, its metal drumming tons of bands use off timing in drums. But I can tell you Lars can keep time, he just old and most likely doesnt practice as he once did.
Robert made them sound so damn good.... He's a legendary bass player
