Jordan actually invited Marco to come jam with the band while they were doing tryouts, Marco said it would be really cool to be in the band, but had zero intentions of being in the band at all, he expressed that several times. He did an interview about it saying how they made his jam session with the band look like he auditioned for the band and he clearly didn't. He also told them to take his audition down because it wasn't an audition at all, they just made it seem like one and he wasn't happy about it.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer The thing about Marco that makes him so valuable is his outstanding musicality. Imho projects he's joined have suddenly become a level or two better - be it that one Plini EP he played on or the two Steven Wilson Albums etc.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer Music is about music not how you can play in 22/8 and chop your rudiments all over the kit at 300bpm. Marco has a musicality that Lang doesn't have. Music always wins. Phil Collins can't do what Lang does but everyone remembers his drum parts and nobody will remember a single thing Lang has done.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer No, re read carefully, i didn't say no musicality, i said Marco has musicality he doesn't. Reading is cool. Also, 'he would spank him' as if they're boxers or football teams. Music isn't a competition, but if it was, it would be judged on actual music and not drum chops, which is why you linking to this tuneless song that nobody would buy and listen to is an example that you're putting drum technicality over musicality. Good for you son. See everything Marco has done with Steven Wilson. Thanks for playing, bye.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer "Marco has *a* musicality that Lang doesn't have." Learn to read and understand or go get checked to see if you're on the spectrum.
I’ll take Minnemann over Lang anyday. Lang is all flash not very much substance IMO. Great drummer but not on Minnemann’s level at all especially when you factor in musicality
I'm very happy Marco is where he is now. The playing in the Aristocrats is just on a level that fits Marco. That band communicates through notes to each other. Amazing to watch.
Dude my eyes lit up when i saw Derek roddy then was totally let down they didn't like him but i mean he said himself hes primarily an extreme metal drummer and didn't really prepare. Hes still awesome though.

They actually chose Marco first instead of Mike Mangini. But the new drummer had to sign a contract stipulating that they couldn't play in any other band except Dream Theater. So Marco turned down the offer because of that very reason. The second choice was Mike.
That's news to me about Marco being first pick, and turning down the gig!!! Thanks for the FYI. (Where did you get that information?) As a killer drummer myself, I thought Marco was clearly the most musical drummer, with no less chops. Plus, Marco seemed like a matter-of-fact guy, free of any egoentric tendecies. Mangini, on the other hand, acted like a 'drama queen' while waiting for the audition results. Bottom line, though, all the contestants did a great job at the audition.
@@JRM---516 I read it from Marco himself in an interview he's done. I tried to find it for you but it's been a while. You can read a lot of other interviews where he says basically the same thing. they picked mike mangini because he is technically an amazing drummer and he didn't make any mistakes,he is a smart drummer. For me mike mangini is the best for dream theater
Reyna Mae Maranga Is that why he sounds like a drum machine? If that's what DT needs they might as well just program the drums with Superior Drummer or something. The best for DT is still Portnoy.
tbh, he is the best drummer in this video, but he's not who I would go with if I was them. IMO Mike Mangini and Marco fit them better. Thomas is a better drummer tho
+rudessdfdf And cause he's also boring and tasteless. No feel or emotion, all tech. Also implying that Mike, Virgil and Marco aren't monsters. Eh... at least those 4 are all better than Portnoy haha
Erik MetalyRock Lmao you're offened or what? Everyone was aware Marco was one of the best drummers in the world, even far greater than Mike Portnoy. Marco went to audition just to punk the band that their songs were too easy for him. He fucking nailed it without even trying. DT knew Marco was meant for something greater than this. Marco drumming skill is far superior than to play with DT. The band would hold him back.
Nor Priest Marco maybe technically superior to portnoy. But portnoy's creativity far exceeds anyone imo. Also Petrucci and Rudess are regarded as some of the best muscians for their instruments and DT is extremely technical I don't think anyone is too good for DT
A cookie monster shirt at an audition? Just implies he's a goofball. He doesn't look right for this band. It was Mangini all the time. This music blows anyway.
@@vintagemxer9165 You realize the cookie monster guy had bigger talent than all those fuckheads. Sure he won't stay with DT cuz he knows he's too good for the band 😆
I'm pretty sure the audio wasn't captured properly from that audition, so - unlike the others - we're hearing the audio from the camera. You think it wasn't loud as fuck with those other drummers? It would have sounded just as overpowering standing there; but DT are using in-ear monitors, so they get the balance they want.
Justin Laurente Yeah, i mean wouldn’t have been called to the audition if he would be a useless drummer. He just had a really bad day. Also he weren’t really used to their way of jamming and creating music collectively. He usually writes the music himself.
Thomas Lang is like a drumming terminator sent from the future to break sticks like twigs and crush DW 9000 pedals with his ultrafast double-bass technique. Love that guy!

Cristian Nunes sure, decline the chance to play with the best band in the world simply because every other drummer in the audition is better than you. Smart.
Cameron5540 Virgil is more of a session drummer and traditionally more of a "light touch" player. He's an incredible drummer and it was cool to see him play DT but it's definitely not his style. They are right not to pick him for the gig.
I think if not Mangini...Wildoer would have been my choice...very smooth and easy yet powerful and right on cue...there others were much too choppy in their transitioning to play as an ensemble with DT. Mangini and Wildoer had the best flow and fit right in there...
I really think they screwed up picking Mangini, as fine of a drummer as he is. I just think that Marco is what they needed to inject some soul back into the band's music. I haven't heard anything I like from them since Portnoy left, and I've really tried. Mangini can play anything, but he plays it like a robot. I know that's cliche now, but it's true.
Coming back to these tapes nearly a decade later and I can't help but feel like they took the safe option, someone that would just play the parts, not fuck it up and have decent chemistry with, there are better and more creative drummers here that would have changed the DT formula too much and DT are very much a band resting on their laurels releasing the same record for a good 15 years now. A fun documentary, but they only ever wanted someone to play the parts given. I can't imagine the albums we'd have got if Marco landed the gig.
Imo the only other possible choice would have been Marco Minnemann, he's insane. Other than him nobody was better than Mangini who is phenomenal and I hate that the DT fans can't accept him. What is the name of the song marco plays?
@@goodbass123 A Nightmare To Remember by Dream Theater
Qq
What name intro song for Aquiles priester ?
@@goodbass123 The funniest part is Marco's video here wasn't even a real audition for the band that day.
Minnemann is the type of drummer every band could pray for. Such a master!
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer "Marco has *a* musicality that Lang doesn't have."
Learn to read and understand or go get checked to see if you're on the spectrum.
I'm happy too! I think Mangini fits very well in DT.... that's life ... if you didn't succeed with DT it works with Kreator or Necrophagist:))

I was at a Marco Minnemann workshop a few years ago, he said DT wanted him to become a full member but that meant no other bands and DT as his top priority. He didn't want that, so they went with Mangini instead.

They actually chose Marco first instead of Mike Mangini. But the new drummer had to sign a contract stipulating that they couldn't play in any other band except Dream Theater. So Marco turned down the offer because of that very reason. The second choice was Mike.
Does it include also that they can't make solo albums like the guitar players most do??? Just curious.
@@さぼせんぱい I do not know the answer about solo album. I do know that it involved other « projects ». So I don’t know.
Captain Falcon Marco Minnemann young? He's 47 years old :)
Reyna Mae Maranga Is that why he sounds like a drum machine? If that's what DT needs they might as well just program the drums with Superior Drummer or something. The best for DT is still Portnoy.

Nor Priest okay
Yeah, but they just needed a drummer for DT, nothing more.

Nor Priest Marco maybe technically superior to portnoy. But portnoy's creativity far exceeds anyone imo. Also Petrucci and Rudess are regarded as some of the best muscians for their instruments and DT is extremely technical I don't think anyone is too good for DT
