@@jackmakackov7077 "You don't turn down Virgil, Marco, or Thomas" Why can't you? Virgil - failed the chemistry test via the improvisational jamming. Technically deadly, but weak in the 'make it up live on the spot' part. He's also not 'nerdy' or 'geeky' enough in spirit - which I think DT wanted and needed. Virgil is a serious stiff dude. Almost too 'dark' for DT. Marco - kind of a 'hired gun' guy, like Steve Vai was on guitar in bands for years in his early career. Great for some dating, but not marriage 'until death do us part' which is what the band wanted and needed. Marco wasn't ready to settle down. Plus Marco is more silly fusion-rock-jazzy at his best (much better fit in Aristocrats). He's more a drummer for sessions and 'projects' - than jumping into a committed iconic classic progressive rock band gig. Marco had more seeds to sow in his longterm career. On a minor note, Marco doesn't project "serious metal" much, as a dude. He's kinda goofy - in his great way. I mean - a cookie monster shirt... LOL Thomas - same weaknesses in the chemistry test... just wasn't organically fitting into the DT style improvisations. They could feel it. Heck, I could feel it. It was like DT was jamming, and a great drummer was in the room playing ALONG to it... not ADDING to it, and making it stellar/better. Like Marco, Lang doesn't come off as 'metal enough' either.

At 17.10 the change when Mangini hits the symbol and everyone just follows into that halftime jazz/blues Gary Moore type section is absolutely astounding. I think Petrucci and LaBrie have misread what makes their music great to fans. It seems like they went into the last two albums with a plan, and actually the music they write spontaneously is much better than the stuff that they plan. I love old DT when you didn't know where a new song or album was going. Metropolis or Octavarium or Train of Thought were all amazing because they were based off of jam sessions rather than going in with a preconceived concept for the most part. Even though Metropolis was based off the song it was jams around the feel of that song that the album was really based around. That's what the fans want, more shooting from the hip. When they play freely with no restrictions or plans these guys are the only fucking band that matters. Regardless of whether it's MP or MM playing the drums. Both these guys are incredible and it's actually really hard to choose between them. MP is my personal favourite, just because he's written some of the most satisfying drum parts I've ever heard (the fills on sacrificed sons are mind blowingly good - just one example in a sea of hundreds). But I'm hoping that they'll take to the new album in the same fashion as before and MM will likely surprise and astound us if they do.
+SuperGeo1987 This is one of the best responses to the MPvMM debate. That being said, I joined them at ADTOE and then worked my way backwards... and then forwards with the self-titled album :D I agree with you in the sense that when I first started listening to everything, from WDADU to BCSL, and then ADTOE and DT, I had no idea how the albums would have sounded. Sure, I heard snippets of Fortune in Lies, Metropolis Pt. 1, Overture 1928, and On the backs of Angels, but the rest was a mystery. I'm happy with what happened then and now (despite "discovering" them so far into their career already), and I eagerly wait the next album, which has unfortunately been pushed back to early 2016.
the biggest complaint people have with DT is the vocals, although the last albums his voice is more "warm" and nicer. in some of the previous albums James is, sad to say, utter crap and off key WAILING.
That's because he royally f'd up his throat. He got food poisoning and ruptured his vocal cords while puking. So there are a few songs on previous albums where he just struggles. He's been sounding normal (at least to my ear) on the last three albums.
i second that. Their late two albums (oh, wait, its three already with Mangini?) are EXCRUCIATINGLY BORING, their music has become so rigid, so programmed. They're trying to hide it behind the pathos and over-the-top arrangements, but it hardly helps.
Mike Mangini doesn't make me miss Mike Portnoy at all. Coming from a lifelong DT fan, this means a lot. I first thought DT was dead after MP's departure but it was a new beginning. I have tears in my eyes when I watch this footage and the jam was awesome.
Unfortunately the new albums doesnt sound like this at all. The chemistry is great, but after they writing some songs, turns out petrucci and rudess take the lead, mangini is not involved that much. Even on the astonishing, they write it REMOTELY plus petrucci have the biggest piece on writing and that sound so wrong.
How much I love see this again, we all know Mike deserved this privileged place with DT because he is SO passionate and so dedicated and also extremly humble and curious and FUN
Portnoy is a great drummer but Mike Mangini is just on a different level. Every fiber of Mike’s being goes into preparing for his performances. That’s not to take anything away from Portnoy because he helped create the music that Mangini now plays but Mangini takes what Portnoy did and adds to it without changing the overall foundation of the music. It’s got to be an extreme compliment to be followed up by Mike Mangini of all people. He’s just incredible. I hear he’s a really nice guy as well.
21:38 Awesome fill that perfectly fit the tone and the attitude of the session at that moment. I have listened to Dream Theater in the past and was always impressed and while they ARENT the same without Mike Portnoy I think they shouldn't be. Mike Mangini is a different drummer with an intensity that I love. Ive seen him live 2 times and on both occasions he was a mind blowing drummer to watch. Full of fire and passion for the art and so musical as an artist. I love how Dream Theater feels now. More Mature maybe is the word im thinking. They have grown through this transition with Mike Mangini keeping time in the back and I think they are better than ever honestly.
This documentary is so inspirational..This is third time i watch it beacause im also hopefully auditioning for a band i am willing to play with for a long time. Im not a drummer, but i can say freely that Dream Theater should be proud to play with a musician like Mike Mangini. Becuse of him i started listeng and enjoy DT music again, after a break of coulple of years.
Mike mangini is hands down one of the best drummers on the planet.. Mike mangini, Marco minneman, Mike portnoy, Pete wildoer, George kolias, and Thomas Lange just to name a few are the greatest drummers to ever play a drum kit.. all of their styles and playing techniques are just phenomenal and brutal beyond belief man.. I could sit and watch any one of these players I mentioned here all day long and not get bored.. especially Mike mangini.. he's incredible.. dream theater couldn't have picked a better member to play the drums for their band.. period.. he fits like a glove man.. perfection at it's finest.. thanks for sharing this video.. it's amazing..there wasn't this much jam time on the regular episodes.. I'd like to see all of the drummers do the improv with them.. that'd be awesome.. thanks again.. cheers..
This is the kind of atmospheres I'd like to hear in coming album. It's about DT takes the time to build textures, bridges and melodic passages along songs. Time will tell.
Mike’s reaction is one of amazement and extreme gratitude. He recognized he was given the opportunity and EARNED HIS SPOT to be a member of one of, if not, the best progressive metal bands on the planet. Something Mike Portnoy CHOSE to walk away from. In my humble opinion.
Thank you for all the years mike, may God bless you wherever you are. You are always be the DT family 😢. And another mike welcome back to your old family 😊
I am very disappointed in the decision to move forward without Mangini - I love what he did in DT. I'd love to see Mangini do something with Derek Sherinian and Tony MacAlpine
This solo is truly on another level !!! It’s amazing to me anybody could train their body to do the things he’s doing! A very kind humble guy who is a brilliant musician and as a drummer this is remarkable to witness ! I hope he continues his career with great success and I’m very thankful he played for Dream Theater as long as he did! A perfect choice and I wish him the best in future endeavors as I will continue to follow his playing . Remarkable player like seeing Jimi Hendrix for the first time! The Bruce Lee of drummers !Bought his instructional DvD just to watch him play and see his set up. Thanks Mike !
not really a DT fan but i saw MM playing with Steve Vai and he was incredible - seems like a good dude too, hope i get to see him play again at some point 🤘🏼
Im so stoked that Portnoy is back BUT I was also so happy when Mangini got the job, i had followed his drumming for a few years at that point and dude is just AMAZING. The things he does with his BRAIN then into his arms and legs are just awesome. Im just as excited to see what he does as i am that Portnoy came back.
I think Mangini was auditioning and evaluating them just as much as they were him. He was driving alot of the time. This chemistry was good and as much as I like Marco, Mike was the best fit for this band.
It’s so funny how he said he almost felt like crying yet his reaction made most of us hold back tears . He reminds me of myself with how emotional he gets in a good way
The talent and the sound of this jam/audition is better than their albums they put out with MM. It's so Raw and SPONTANEOUS and REAL. The "feel" is just INCREDIBLE!!
To this day it's the most impressive jam session I have ever seen. I mean... what the fuck. It's multilayered, heavy, free-flowing, full of feel and fun shit going on to the extremes... It's wild. I watch this shit at least once a year.
John Inglis You're terribly misguided. They released this footage with their latest album, two years after the auditions. All the drummers were recorded and it's obvious that they would only release extra footage of the one they chose. If they knew they would go with him before the auditions, then Mangini is either the greatest actor ever to pull of that reaction when he got the news, or DT purposefully put him through all that stress, made Aquiles Priester cancel his gigs for nothing and so on.
I semi-demand this be made into a song without the rest of the documentary stuff so i can listen to it without all the distractions, its about my fifth time listening to this and would prefer none of the documentary stuff!
I second that. I'd love to just see this. it's kinda like with A Change of Seasons and they left it off Images and Words but made it the main song on an EP. Except this is a complete jam, but i'd still love if they tagged it as a song and put it as an instrumental on a future album.
I wish they had recorded/released the riff tests that they did especially the groove Mangini played where he’s counting out the intro and that super mellow jam with Donati.
I love that a large portion of rock innovators are always Italian. I know they have had a huge influence with classical music over the centuries and developing instruments etc... But it seems like it is more than just a part of their culture. It is in their DNA! they are always super good at classical or classical based rock music. More creative than other types of humans.
Hate to rain on your parade, but, although Mangini is most likely an Italian name, Mike is American, as is Petrucci, and every other "Italian" american!
America is made up of influx of immigrants from all over the world, with mostly the Europeans from the beginning. they will be considered as Italian rock innovators only if they were born and raised in Italy with their cultural and musical influence. since DT is awesome, people trace it to their European ancestry. if they are some shitty pop band, people would immediately associate that to this American Stupidity generalization.
Coming from DT concert last day in Milano ... Mangini was incredible ! The heart ❤️ of the band ! I was waiting a lot to see him with Dream Theater ! He is just amazing ! ... thank you Mike and DT! Wonderful Live Concert !

You are right buddy, the concept can have the last seat. They need to jam first.
Mike Mangini doesn't make me miss Mike Portnoy at all. Coming from a lifelong DT fan, this means a lot. I first thought DT was dead after MP's departure but it was a new beginning. I have tears in my eyes when I watch this footage and the jam was awesome.
I will say the opposite! He make me miss Portnoy A LOT! Coming from a lifelong DT fan, this means A LOT!
Arguably the best musical decision dream theater ever made. He is a truly outstanding musician and, in their words, is an "undeniable person".
it is the best one so far.
Dunno, if they initially chose minnemann 😅
I like Mangini as a person, he's a good guy. Cool he got the job.
its normal to be obsessed with this jam?
No it's a once in a lifetime gig and ya set for life plus Mangini's very passionate and dedicated to the craft
@@j.d.7208 he is talking about himself
That jam is incredible, such a connection of improvising on all parts.
After Mike Portnoy...I never thought anyone could possibly take his place...but lo and behold!!!! Mike Mangini!!!!
He's brilliant!!
There is something about mangini that no other drummer has 😢😢😢
21:38 Awesome fill that perfectly fit the tone and the attitude of the session at that moment.
AGREE!!!!!
couldn't agree more, I do like how you put it into words.
They were at their pinnacle with Mangini.
God, Mike is such an inspiration. His passion for what he does is undeniable. Congrats again, Mike.
I'd like to see all of the drummers do the improv with them.. that'd be awesome.. thanks again.. cheers..
I agree completely very well said
Virgil Donati and Gavin Harrison
Mangini is top man!! Check his drum solos.. So well crafted and interesting!! His polyrhythms are incredible!!
He is a PROFESSOR! Absolutely great in musicality! 14:18
He is fantastic, that's for sure. But, the Professor is Neil Peart.
@@patriciameyer7401 so you only had a professor in ur life
From 17:00 to about 22:00 absolutely needs to become a song.. Petrucci solo was beautiful, Jordan was killer.. The riff right at the end was awesome.
+Blair Wriston This entire jam needs to be a song, produced in itself without the documentary!
+Blair Wriston Just one of the greatest feels I've ever heard... And, that was just a JAM!
I'm so happy for him! As if I myself was in this group! Mike Mangini the best drummer I`ve ever seen! Thank you so much for this video!
This is the kind of atmospheres I'd like to hear in coming album. It's about DT takes the time to build textures, bridges and melodic passages along songs. Time will tell.
This jam session should make it to an album.
MP was definitely very rash in leaving when he did. Although how many of us could do the same thing with very few breaks over 25 years?
Thank you for all the years mike, may God bless you wherever you are. You are always be the DT family 😢. And another mike welcome back to your old family 😊
Extended jamming sessions with people you click with are meditation in its purest form.
Mangini brings such a positive energy. I can’t even stop smiling while watching him ✨
I just cannot for the life of me get past how good mangini’s drums sound in this mix compared with all their albums w him.
I am very disappointed in the decision to move forward without Mangini - I love what he did in DT. I'd love to see Mangini do something with Derek Sherinian and Tony MacAlpine
17:10 onwards, that's the Dream Theater I love.
so you like adtoe?
ME TOO! Ever heard JP's "Lost Without You"? One of the best melodic songs I've ever heard.
Totally agree with you... it hits deep into the soul and blown me awai! Thx dude.
I get teary-eyed watching this... Mike, you are amazing!!!
Mike Mangini has a crazy mind to be able to memorize all those parts just to audition. He's a real specimen
How is it crazy? Lol
It's amazing that we can see into these lives.
That jam was simple magic. It's easy to understand why they picked him, Mangini is awesome.
This dude played the drums like it's his last day on earth. BRAVO great jamming chemistry.
thanks for putting this up man really cool love these guys best band in the world
8:49 is just incredible XD Mike Mangini just fucks with the time completely XD
hell's yah my Like moved it to 9.9 K LOL .... This was such a killer jam !!! Mangini jsut seems like such a nice guy, talented and humble ...
I desperatly would like this jam recorded. And I want Mike to be happy. He is such a good person.
not really a DT fan but i saw MM playing with Steve Vai and he was incredible - seems like a good dude too, hope i get to see him play again at some point 🤘🏼
I would be down for an album of just the 4 of them shredding!
This documentary is FANTASTIC!!!!!
16:57 That whole chorus/string section Jordan was playing is amazing, I wish I had a good ear so I could recreate what he was playing
Love this documentary. I have a lot of respect for these musicians.
Congratulations on the Grammy DT.🤘
I think Mangini was auditioning and evaluating them just as much as they were him. He was driving alot of the time. This chemistry was good and as much as I like Marco, Mike was the best fit for this band.
the best brain and the best heart drummer ever....
for me this actually is a better mix than the album. I can clearly hear all the instruments...
Yeah. I don't like overproduction too. Organic is way better to me
It’s so funny how he said he almost felt like crying yet his reaction made most of us hold back tears . He reminds me of myself with how emotional he gets in a good way
I want to be prepared like this guy, in my opportunity, in any area of life. BEAUTIFUL
These guys could just impov an entire album in 1 take if they wanted...stunning :)
He was chosen way before the auditions. This video proves it.
How?
Just the way it's portrayed. You see any other videos of the others like this? No. You don't.
John Inglis
ha ha another Iilumination theory..
Come on. Let's face it. Do you see any build up from any of the other drummer's?
John Inglis
You're terribly misguided.
Mike Mangini's solos in the past are the most entertaining drum solos I have ever seen. The guy is just the right level of crazy.
I semi-demand this be made into a song without the rest of the documentary stuff so i can listen to it without all the distractions, its about my fifth time listening to this and would prefer none of the documentary stuff!
auder stein es tu foc la bluu
I second that. I'd love to just see this. it's kinda like with A Change of Seasons and they left it off Images and Words but made it the main song on an EP. Except this is a complete jam, but i'd still love if they tagged it as a song and put it as an instrumental on a future album.
I have immense respect for Mike Mangini. He works so hard. Puts in a lot of effort to succeed in his ventures.
21:52 HOLY SHIT !!! This NEEDS TO BE IN A ACTUAL SONG!! PLEASE DREAM THEATER, Jordan solo was an absurd!!!
I agree! This entire jam was epic!
Actually epic part starts from 21:18 :)
Sounds like LTE! Epic indeed!
Bonus Material on the upcoming album projected for September 2015?
Calma cara... kkkkk
Thank You Mangini ❤️
I have a lot more respect for Mangini after seeing this. Holy crap that dude is insanely talented.
I wish they had recorded/released the riff tests that they did especially the groove Mangini played where he’s counting out the intro and that super mellow jam with Donati.
I think the best part of the jam was that they all looked like they were having so much fun (except for Myung, he was in the zone lol)
It can be extraordinarily difficult to openly jam with 3 other virtuosos who have played and gelled together for decades. Mike M did an amazing job.
I love that a large portion of rock innovators are always Italian. I know they have had a huge influence with classical music over the centuries and developing instruments etc... But it seems like it is more than just a part of their culture. It is in their DNA! they are always super good at classical or classical based rock music. More creative than other types of humans.
that's even sadder .
He's probably an italian american. I can HEAR the new jersey/new york in his voice!
He's from Massachusetts.
Thank u Mike..
AmI the only adult man to burst into tears when Mike gets the phone call at the end!?! Holy crap that was awesome.
Yes
Coming from DT concert last day in Milano ... Mangini was incredible ! The heart ❤️ of the band ! I was waiting a lot to see him with Dream Theater ! He is just amazing ! ... thank you Mike and DT! Wonderful Live Concert !
One pair of underwears for three days. My kind of drummer.
His lucky underwear
Antonio Ortuño And after that audition I'd definitely say he went out and bought some new ones..
Antonio Ortuño Remember that right after saying that, he said, "I'm just kidding".
Day 1 fresh
Day 2 turn 'em around
Day 3 Commando
