I just hope that the man is still having fun. He gets so much hate and seems very defensive here. I loved DT with Portnoy, I love DT with Mangini. Both are fantastic drummers and Mangini really shines on the new album. The man is incredible. Replacing Portnoy would be like replacing Lars in Metallica or Neil in Rush RIP, the expectations would never be met. Life is too short not to be enjoying your passion. I hope that it's just water off the ducks back for Mangini.
I think things are turning around finally for mike Mangini. We finally got the drum sound we should have had on “a dramatic turn of events” can’t wait for the next album!
Met Mike last year after the DT show in Atlanta and he said the exact same thing to me about fans not being happy with the way he plays DT songs. He said, "Portnoy never played songs live exactly like the album recording so why should I?" And I completely agree with him.He was such a nice genuine guy. I told him don't worry about what fans say about you. Just do what you do, you played so well tonight. When I left I said, "Nice meeting you again and thanks for talking to me." He said, "Thank you and thanks for saying those nice things about me." I said, "No problem."
Dream theater becomes a machine of markething. Im sorry for him. I think it's not a good situation for this. The explaination is that Portnoy was a symbol himself and can do what he wants. Mangini is there to consolidate a symbol of dream theater. Repeating live the same things of the album is a way to create a brand. Lang and Donati at the audition where more creative but that was not what the producers wants. And takes Mangini. When Portnoy was in The Band they of course work to create a brand (they are a commercial band of course), but they don't need to do all this. Great man and artist Mangini. People should relax and respect other people and the things for what they are: art. Music is art, so respect art, and listen your fucking cd if u want a meme or a brand! Listen music when u go concerts. Idiots kids
People just love hating on others. Mike came in to the band and had to learn everything about the way of life in the band, not just learn the music (which isn't exactly in basic 4/4 time). He's done a phenomenal job fitting into the band. His precision is mind boggling. His ability to orchestrate on the kit is beautiful. He can play a song exactly the same way a thousand times in a row if he wanted to, where Mike Portnoy was inconsistent every show. His fills wouldn't even be the same (made me wonder if MP forgot how to play his own parts on the albums). At the end of the day, they're both superb drummers and have so much to bring to the table. They are individuals. It's been ten years... let Mike Mangini just be himself ffs.
I’m going to be a dick squared here and say that I often cringe, listening to both Mangini and Portnoy live, since, to my ears at least, they often steer away from the album to much. Portnoy makes more bloopers than you might think and I personally just don’t like manginis take on Portnoy as much (this does not extend to what he has written himself since I think he’s more comfortable with that). This might be because I’m a drummer and is extra finely tuned into what the drums are playing, and because they are in fact human, despite all evidence pointing otherwise.

I’m not a huge DT fan anymore, but Mike is such a cool artist and genuine guy. Our son, who’s also a drummer, was going through some tough times last year so we got the idea to order up a Cameo from Mike. He was incredible and spent several minutes delivering encouragement and support to a teenager he’ll never know. He totally exceeded our expectations.
Mike sure seemed to be on the defense the whole time. Poor guy. I hope he realizes how loved he is. Glad he’s contributing to the legacy. Much health and love!
An accomplished master at his craft. And don't have to watch a lot of videos with mr. Mangini talking to get the sense that he's such a warm and plesant human being.
I love Dream Theater with Portnoy but it has gone to a whole new level with Mangini and it blows my mind even more. One thing I can't stop wondering about is the cost of the whole drum set.
@@benjamindover8221 Yeah, asking about his unique set up. What's wrong with that? Bill Bruford has a unique set up and people have asked him about it. I can't imagine him getting agitated about that.

Being a huge DT fan since '92 I've seen the lineup change a few times. Imagine having to replace a member of this band and you're the guy. Can't fathom the pressure to get it right or else. Mike Mangini is a perfect fit and crushes it. He nails Portnoy's parts... he is no slouch. I was in awe when I first heard MP play the images and words CD back in '92. He is no slouch either. To have MM give props verbally and by playing MP's parts is testament to what a professional MM is. Hats off to all DT members and to many more years of great music from the band.
At the Glasgow gig last night. What a great sound, drums were fantastic. All the guys are superhuman . Mike is an amazing drummer. Awesome sound from him, big respect .
I think that Mike Mangini is doing an excellent job to keep the Dream Theater machine rolling. He is a technical player and is becoming more of a feel player especially in the end of Finally Free from Metropolis II Scenes from a Memory. In which isn't that easy to do for many who are not used to that kind of thing. Such Amazing human being with a sense of humour. Thank you for sharing!
Man I love mike mangini. Dude is so nice, so funny. It takes a lot of strength to deal with the unfortunately endless amount of criticism and comparisons to MP. But he takes it in stride, and plays with it. Awesome dude, and cool interview!
Met him once after a drum clinic.real nice guy .People in line behind me but he was happy to chat with me about his experiences with Steve Vai.Killer drummer too!
Mike drove home some great points, it's really personal preference how someone sets up their gear. I totally agreed about what he said in being in a different mood on some days. Im the same way when it comes to thrones, and I too like my cymbals closer to me. Great interview.
Mike, those who know the drums understand how TRULY AWESOME YOU ARE! I’m incredibly happy for you getting the gig with Dream Theater as you definitely deserve it! Be at peace with your yourself, forget the naysayers, and ENJOY LIFE!
Mike Mangini is a genius! He does what’s best for him to work! Everyone has their own way of doing things! You can’t waste life trying to be someone else. It’s funny most of those who criticize can’t even play or even play like him!
There are only about a dozen drummers on the planet who are in a position to criticize Mangini, and I can guarantee not a single one of them has posted a comment on this video. LOL And you're right, those that do post can't play anywhere close to his level.
I'm counting nine pieces there. Plus the octobans. I'm confused when he says it's a six piece. Just count them. Maybe geniuses think differently who knows.
@@STSGuitar16 Never said it was a bad thing. Said he was saying something that wasn't even true and then he said other people are nuts. Saying something is square when looking at a round abject is nuts. Also not everyone loves big drum sets. Some of my favorite drummers play small four or five piece kits but the music he plays calls for a big one.
@@STSGuitar16 Damn straight! It's part of the show and amazement. I play a large kit normally, and I bring it out in full for shows (and I do use it all). I've heard tons of people say, "wow" and "look at that kit!" I've had people walk up after the set and even complement its sound and appearance (it's an entry-level Tama Rockstar DX kit from 1991 - but I know how to tune it). In 20 years of live performances, I have only had two people bitch at the size of my kit: 1) a fat, flannel-wearing retard bass player who played in some lame, shoe-gaze post-black SJW band, and 2) another fat slob with greasy hair who played guitar in some local shit-tier sludge metal band (and whose bandmates confided in me after the show that he's an asshole to work with and all said my kit was perfectly fine). It all comes down to the drummer's playing style and what the music calls for. Period. End of discussion. The showiness is the icing on the cake for the fan.
5:30 This is exactly why many say that DT has lost their soul since MP left. I know Mangini said that DT told him to play exactly on the click for production purposes but when MP was around, he pushed/pulled some hits here and there and fans liked it.
You can tell that Mike is starting to get sick of explaining himself to people hahaha Good for you, man. Don’t let the “everything after images and words sucks!” crowd get you down.
I’ve been a huge Mike Mangini fan since I heard him play with Steve Via! I just really like these down to earth modest talented musicians. They just seem to ooz enthusiasm!!
Mike Mangini has the coolest setup I've ever seen. I make jokes about the cymbals, but it's never bothered me. I always trusted that he probably had a good reason for setting them up that way.
Thomann's Drum Bash It also prevents the cymbals from destroying James Labrie’s ears. Cymbals in a more normal position would be right at the level of the singer’s ears where here they’re above the ears.
Thomann's Drum Bash Portnoy literally never had bleeding issues and he had the best live kit sound of any modern drummer lol Thats just bs, or not knowing how to mic a kit. If anything you make it even worse for engineers having them so high and hard to get to with proper angles. No drummer with their cymbals shoulder height has ever complained about bleeding live. Maybe Mangini is still new to audio engineering and touring but thats hardly a valid reason for the ridiculous height. It has nothing to do with being closer when hes playing twice as hard because of the angle. Its also not healthy to have our arms above your heart for extended periods of time. It looks 80’s, and dated. Its in no way ergonomic.
Dream theater should come up with some merch, where they have an image of mangini behind a drum set with his arms stretched out like a rubber band trying to reach the cymbals
The drum is the drum.- Mike Mangini 2020 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for your excellent work Mike, Room 137 is one of my favourites songs. You are so smart and virtuous, and this drum kit is proof of that.
Sometimes having an unusual looking setup is what pulls someone in! I love seeing unique setups. One of my favorites is that of Travis Orbin. Floor Tom on both sides, no rack tom, two hi hats, a ride to his left, and monstrous sticks! Frankly I find it inspirational! Keep it up, Mike! Love seeing the new setups each album!
It's his kit, it's his interpretation of the music, his style, his comfort. I don't get why people still compare Mike and Mike. To me,having 44yrs on my kit now, they're both phenomenal drummers. Each with their own twists. Portnoy launched Dream Theater and Mangini is taking DT to whole new level. 👍👍
Mike is awesome. I really him because not only is he extremely tallented, he is down to earth. I love that in a muscian with his tallent still being a good guy to his fans and not a prima donna like some are. Good luck to mike in the future. I will be watching and cheering for you sir.
Fun Fact: The surname Mangini is a name for a person who was equally adept and skilled in the use of both hands. The name Mancini is derived from the Italian word mancino, which means one who is ambidextrous. @11:16

@Lazy Fingers the thing is mike mangini will never properly replace portnoy. as you said, he was the heart and soul of dt. but the thing is portnoy left. he wasnt kicked out the band. and the fans act like dt should have stopped making music when portnoy left.

I met Mike long before his time in DT and not only is he super nice and laid back but he is without a doubt one of the most musically talented people that I know of. I was thrilled he got to play in DT (nothing against his predecessor whom I also met once, great guy) and I feel like his talent is shining through more and more on the DT albums and in their live shows.
I remember hangin' with him back in 2000 and attending a small venue at an event in Cambridge, MA somewhere and he was not only just as incredible then as he is now, but also had a very kind and generous spirit. I still have his custom made imprinted signature Zildjian Super5A (Select Hickory) drumsticks that he used that very night. He just gave them to me. Very cool person to be around. Thank you Mike...
I've seen DT live in Amsterdam in January and it was just a real treat to see them play.. I was also a bit surprised about Mike's cymbal setup, but he just looked so comfortable playing it, it kind of made sense..

I been a drummer my whole life . This guys timing is 2nd to none . I’d love to sit down and talk with this guy , that is a dream of mine
I saw him play underneath the cymbal when they were in Oslo, I thought it was really cool!
Such a genuine and humble musician. That's what keeps the dream alive.
What a Professional! Taking it to the next level. God Bless you Mr.Man G
it always a pleasure to listen to someone who loves and appreciates their craft
Its hilarious how sensitive people are there days! A musician can do whatever he or she wants with their equipment. Thats what makes bands unique.
I see it more as curiosity from the observers and he being the sensitive one. That's just my observation and could be wrong though.
RodneyLee curiosity? It seems like condemnation to me.
@@benjamindover8221 Yeah, asking about his unique set up. What's wrong with that? Bill Bruford has a unique set up and people have asked him about it. I can't imagine him getting agitated about that.
RodneyLee I’m saying that people don’t question it, they insult Mike Mangini and his setup. Even John Petruuci reacted to the amount of hostility towards Mike.
@@rodneylee4026 Cause king Crimson act as free artist, Dream Theater act as a commercial band (the fact that they are good doesn't change the fact that they are commercial and build to like). So Bill Brufford is judged as an artist, and his freedom is apreciated. Mangini is judged as a product. Im sorry for him, but this is the reason why.
The fact that Mike did this for some guys You Tube channel that he's never even heard of is so generous and kind,.... so "Mike".
I aggre. But it's not some random guy's private channel... Thomann is one of the largest if not the biggest musical store in Europe...
@@janivelic2316 fair enough. Shows how much I know...lol.
At the Glasgow gig last night. What a great sound, drums were fantastic. All the guys are superhuman . Mike is an amazing drummer. Awesome sound from him, big respect .
Such a blast seeing Mangini live on this tour! Looking forward to the London DVD.
LOVED this video!!! I for one have never had any issue with him stepping in and continuing on!
weird interview and camera set-up with the host standing awkwardly in front of the kit
Very awkward lol
Damn right bro.
I’m having anxiety watching this
This guy's personality is so friendly and inviting; he must be a cool guy to have in the band.
"My timing is consistent but it's not perfect" Mike mangini is the only person to use that phrase to describe Mike mangini
Has to be one of the coolest musicians out there; Im not even a DT fan (just not my thing) but I could listen to Mike talk about drums all day.
A great drummer. Very nice guy!
Mike, those who know the drums understand how TRULY AWESOME YOU ARE! I’m incredibly happy for you getting the gig with Dream Theater as you definitely deserve it! Be at peace with your yourself, forget the naysayers, and ENJOY LIFE!
He’s like the nicest musical genius on earth.
What a cool guy….I watched all the auditions tapes….Mike is brilliant
Mike Mangini is a genius! He does what’s best for him to work! Everyone has their own way of doing things! You can’t waste life trying to be someone else.
It’s funny most of those who criticize can’t even play or even play like him!
👍👍👍👍👍
There are only about a dozen drummers on the planet who are in a position to criticize Mangini, and I can guarantee not a single one of them has posted a comment on this video. LOL
And you're right, those that do post can't play anywhere close to his level.
Mangini is both an amazing drummer and person. Hope he continues to enjoy what he does
It's not that the kit is big. Mangini is 5'7"
That’s true! It seems high but in fact it’s not....except the Chinas:) //Simon
I'm counting nine pieces there. Plus the octobans. I'm confused when he says it's a six piece. Just count them. Maybe geniuses think differently who knows.
@@rodneylee4026 I don't know why having a big set is even a bad thing to begin with. Everyone loves seeing and hearing massive drum sets.
Mike is a story teller which makes him a great teacher.
really awesome interview. mike shows his passion for his craft!
Respect to the man. He is incredible, and very down-to-earth and approachable.
5:30 This is exactly why many say that DT has lost their soul since MP left. I know Mangini said that DT told him to play exactly on the click for production purposes but when MP was around, he pushed/pulled some hits here and there and fans liked it.
What a pleasure, what a special day, what a man and his kit ! So glad you had the opportunity, Simon .... so crazy. Fine. Greetz
Mangini’s talk about click (7:50 - 8:12) is very interesting, thinking of these days where Portnoy has announced his return.
Thats why dt was so robotic after portnoy left. They relied everything to the click track, even labrie voice tracks.
mike is such an amazing guy. super interesting to listen to him talk about drums
You can tell that Mike is starting to get sick of explaining himself to people hahaha
Good for you, man.
Yeah me too. And It makes sense in point of the drums bleeding into the cymbal mics //Simon
Thomann's Drum Bash It also prevents the cymbals from destroying James Labrie’s ears. Cymbals in a more normal position would be right at the level of the singer’s ears where here they’re above the ears.
True. But I think LaBrie wearing In-Ears and the big stage the play would be enough of coverage.
@@FanaticDrummer yeah if he played only those cymbals for hours on end he would definitely have minor circulation problems. what a dumbass
Love this guy!! I seen him play with Extreme in the mid 90s. Spectacular drummer and a great personality!!
Dream theater should come up with some merch, where they have an image of mangini behind a drum set with his arms stretched out like a rubber band trying to reach the cymbals
nothing but the ultimate respect and admiration for Mike.
The drum is the drum.- Mike Mangini 2020 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for your excellent work Mike, Room 137 is one of my favourites songs.
Man... Mike is the most entertaining guy. He'd be a blast to hang out with. Hope the guys in the band appreciate him!
Such a class act. An amazing drummer, without any trace of the diva.
Yeah, he was very cool! //Simon
Probably the best drummer and the nicest of guys.
When he holds the stick in 10:15 I was just waiting for Harry potter to show up for a duel. He looks like professor snape
Funny but no.
I love how he's speaking. Mike is a genious!
DT need a genius to replace genius on a drum, and there he is, a Berklee College of Music Professor & closest friend to Mike Portnoy. Ladies and gentlemen and haters, Mike Mangini !!
@Lazy Fingers the thing is mike mangini will never properly replace portnoy. as you said, he was the heart and soul of dt. but the thing is portnoy left. he wasnt kicked out the band. and the fans act like dt should have stopped making music when portnoy left.
Closest friend to Mike Portnoy? I highly doubt that’s the case. I’d almost wager that they’ve never spoken since Mangini joined DT.
To replace an awesome drummer like Mike Portnoy, you bring in a drummer with the same skill set, or better. Mike Mangini is a prime example.
Mike Mangini is doing one hell of a job in keeping time. A lot of people don’t realize how difficult and stressful it can be to be completely synced up like that. Saw Dream Theater during the Astonishing and Distance Over Time tours. Everything was spot on. Blows my mind.
Amazing interview, but I legit feel so sorry for him. He was put into such a terrible situation in the sense he’s dealing with people that are equivalent to whiny spoiled kids. He said himself, he can’t win either way. I hope he’s still having a good time playing with the band though. He does such a great freaking job
Exactly! A classic "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
You’re a legend, Mike! I love the way you’ve integrated your style into DT. Don’t worry about ye olde haters!
serious and passionate. Lot of respect for this great musician.
He's not just a drummer, he's the legend that the world will never forget.
Mangini is a very talented guy and Dream Theater is perfect right now. It's great that this video was made!
“I have Less drums than most” - Mike 2020
Me with snare bass and a ride...
I don't have a drums at all xD
I remember hangin' with him back in 2000 and attending a small venue at an event in Cambridge, MA somewhere and he was not only just as incredible then as he is now, but also had a very kind and generous spirit. I still have his custom made imprinted signature Zildjian Super5A (Select Hickory) drumsticks that he used that very night. He just gave them to me. Very cool person to be around. Thank you Mike...
Mr. Mangini, you’re one of the best on the planet. Ignore the assholes.
I've seen DT live in Amsterdam in January and it was just a real treat to see them play.. I was also a bit surprised about Mike's cymbal setup, but he just looked so comfortable playing it, it kind of made sense..
Mike the master Mangini you really don't have to explain yourself to all of the haters who are crying because Portnoy was fired 10 f n years ago ( for the record I'm a DIEHARD Portnoy fan since images and words)
Do what ever makes you happy bro , btw distance over time was a total masterpiece. Rock on Mangini💪 😎🤘
Was Portnoy fired? I always thought he quit.
@@thulsa_doom nah he wanted an extended break because "it was getting stale" - his words after 25years I agree with Portnoy, but they are a working band and never take extended breaks they started the auditions, Portnoy heard about it and asked to come back they said it was to late , Portnoy even filled a lawsuit for wrongful firing decided it would cost to much money and ruin even more friendships and dropped the lawsuit, I really think his ego had a lot to do with it and he was a founding member he didn't think they would fire him but I think this was an opportunity for the inevitable
Most folks say yeah I’ve played drums for 20 years…Gini says he’s currently working on another dissertation about appropriate drum and cymbal distance…❤
Watch the DT drum auditions. Mike was really the only guy for the job the way I saw it. He earned it and was the best fit.
Sometimes people need to chill and enjoy the music.
Thunder Marco Minnemann would have been a great choice as well, and my personal favorite, but Mangini does a great job anyway, saw DT several times live with Portnoy then Mangini, no doubt this dude is killing it !
Minnemann killed them all
Wow... Not a huge DT fan but this guy deserves a _lot_ of respect. Incredible professionalism.
*" I Like DT with MP "*
Yea, it's true 😀
The other reason why i liked this Mr Mangini beside of his skill. he really humble and always give Positive Vibes if you watching him
