I met Mike after JP show in chula Vista, some fans and I waited like an hour after show, and he appeared. He was so cool and chill signing and taking pictures, what a great musician
It's funny to hear him to say he isn't gear nerd but still at a small setup has 12 or 15 different cymbals and 2 snares. That us mindblowing!Maybe he means he isn't too much detailed gear nerd i agree.
Definitely happy to see one from Portnoy, he’s an absolute beast of a drummer and a super chill dude as well. I absolutely loved this, it was fucking awesome
I absolutely love Mike Portnoy. It's a damn shame he's not in Dream Theater anymore, but at least we got SDOIT, TOT, SFAM etc. And Mangini is still a beast. Mr Portnoy, if you read this, we met 16 years ago, at Wembley Arena and you were a gentleman.
Cool! This is a kit made up of the “Mirage Monster” kit he used on the Systematic Chaos tour - I saw this kit played live in 2007! The sound is awesome!
Glad he mentioned his purple monster foot pedal activated snare drum. You can see it in his Liquid drum theater drum instruction video. You can selected the foot cam view and see a 90's era tama foot pedal directly under his snare with a cable going up to it.
Awesome video as usual. The one thing I think it’s funny how you develop a signature stick that has “active grip” technology but still have to use stick wrap? I tried his sticks and Rich Redmonds. Both have good balance and weight, but pro mark has to go back to the drawing board with their grip stuff!!! Should be called “active slip!” 🤣🤣🤣
You rock Mike. I love watching your cameos on The Monsters Den. I checked out Twin Peaks from your recommendation and I am on season 2 and begin episodes 21 and 22 tonight.
I bet Mike has a small warehouse to atore all his drum kits.. I'd like to have some Ludwig Vistalights, or some.badass Starclassics.. Mike definitely has warned everything that he has earned... Also the 1st winery dog record is the best of the 3
Mike's comments of "just throw any drums up on stage and I'll play it" - shows not so much his skill, but his comfort behind the drums. Any drums (as long as their Tama lol). He's just loves to play. Does he have a record for the number of good bands he's played with?
Bet he got that butt end stick from Peart, he played that way with 747’s left hand with the butt end of the stick, of course that was on the first several live albums
👍 👍 The winery🍷🐕 🏆 🏆 🏆 💎 💎 💎 for FUN! MELODY MASTERS.. NICE .. 3 to 6 diff. Sounds Wow.. your stacks are Sweet! Keep on Rockin in the free World ! Rise above ^ throat chakra ^ I dig it 😎 2
I feel like ghost notes in that early prog stuff was so much more noticeable and took a part somewhere. Now every metal drummer seems to just naturally ghost note through everything. Both awesome.
Just curious is he still destroying 5 or 6 thousand dollars worth of drum equipment and cymbals on stage. Obviously an unnecessary way just to get attention. Why don't you donate some of that unwanted money to drum clinics around the country how about.
Mike is a major influence for so many musicians myself included. Always a class act during interviews.
It's the drummer I've seen live the most times. His pleasure to play was always infectious !

Met him several times. Always a very cool dude.
Mike revolutionized modern drumming. His influence on the battery is total.
Definitely happy to see one from Portnoy, he’s an absolute beast of a drummer and a super chill dude as well. I absolutely loved this, it was fucking awesome
i just love the way he laughs. always and always will be one of my influences. a god in rhythm.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE!!!
Code Orange and Boston - T Shirt game on point, runs the gamut from alpha to omega in one image.
p sweet
I try to keep it crispy!
"And when you're in 11 Bands" - which is why we love him!
420 is also my birthday! And among other things 😉
NICE.
loving all the hair and beard colors mike
I really wanna see an updated drum rundown with his Dream Theater kit!
Great drum rundown. Love the interviewer. He was totally on point with Mike and asking all the right questions.
❤mike

There's a recent Liquid Tension Experiment album, the closest thing to a DT.
So... who's the tech? Bummer no shout out. Oh well, hard work goes unnoticed all the time.
Good drummer, nice set. Rock on!
Doing the 7 & 9 splashes was genius at the time. Same with the stacks.
Cool! This is a kit made up of the “Mirage Monster” kit he used on the Systematic Chaos tour - I saw this kit played live in 2007! The sound is awesome!
⚡️🤘⚡️
Установка Старкласик Акриловая Tama!)
Gracias MIKE por influenciarnos en la batería. Gracias por tu música y gracias por seguir siendo una leyenda viviente.
Great drummer, great guy, and fabulous drum designer as well - this strainer is absolutely genius! Rock on!!!
Wow, man, great interview! Congrats for the all team! And Mike is the king and a great musician and person! Hugs from Brazil

DUDE. Great get!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
⚡️🦾⚡️
Went to go see these guys last week and it was the best thing I have ever seen! Big love Portney 🙌
⚡️🤘⚡️
Awesome kit Mike, and that is a 22x18 bass drum 😎🤘🏻 The drums sound freaking great
Awesome and humble, a great combination.
Def not humble...

Great interview! I love when the lights hit the clear heads. I’m going to try for a stick next time ❤
Nice interview! A great guy is Mike and superb tub-charmer to boot. One of my main influences. 🤘🙂👍
Tub charmer... righto then.
So usefull video. Mike its my idol, love him rich and helpfull tip

THE GOAT
I made a Rogue in Diablo IV named MikePortnoy because it looked just like him.
magnifico.💔💔💔💔💔💔
DW did the 3 position butt plate years ago.
Legendary 🥁
Neil Peart was the youngest to be introduced on MD Hall of Fame.
Tama bring back the MIRAGE and give us a Mike Portnoy signature acrylic snare!
Great video !!!!
Please Drum Rundown With Mike Mangini (Dream Theater)
15:28 - yep, if you ever get to tech for Mike, pay very close attention to what he says here
Mike he’s the best drummer way better dreams either need to let him come back
I bet Mike has a small warehouse to atore all his drum kits.. I'd like to have some Ludwig Vistalights, or some.badass Starclassics..
Mike definitely has warned everything that he has earned...
Also the 1st winery dog record is the best of the 3
anyone know the sizes of the octabons
What a musician, man.. Big fan of him and i'm not even a drummer.

thanks to this video I found out mike smokes weed hahahaha
SABIAN, bring back the max splashes!
Bet he got that butt end stick from Peart, he played that way with 747’s left hand with the butt end of the stick, of course that was on the first several live albums
If he's still with Sabian, what happened to the Max splashes? I miss them
His work on the Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare Album is truly amazing!!
I think that is a 22x18 bass drum
does anyone know the length of his octobans

The left and right sticks... Who is this guy, Cam from Modern Family?😂
He looks like the paintings of jesus with the bright lights around his head. Drum jesus.
Praise be!
Why mike not use dyna sync pedal
Haha the notion that this kit is stripped down makes me laugh in 4 piece with 2 cymbals
\m/
Soooooooo 2 of his Sabian crashs only lasted 2 months before cracklng?
Not a fan of the new Sabian logo. Actually not really a fan of Sabian in general, but that new logo is really not it.
Like, zero ghost notes. Weird how drumming has changed since his day.
Yes ghost notes were not discovered until 2018.
I feel like ghost notes in that early prog stuff was so much more noticeable and took a part somewhere. Now every metal drummer seems to just naturally ghost note through everything. Both awesome.
@@yoyolebatteur Cool narrative you conjured up, have fun arguing with yourself.
@@doyledesign Yep, ghost notes are just a given now.
@@MrE1981 Are you always that serious?
"Promo SM"
"In terms of brass, what dyu got?" Absolutely nothing
Exercise and eat right then you will have more energy
I wish Mike would come back to dream theater. I do not like the drummer they have now.
This aged well
Portnoy Rambles so much
Probably doesnt? you mean he doesnt!!
Jason Rullo is a better drummer by far
I can't dig acrylic drums. Or dw kits. Dead sounding, no soul
Mike Portnoy … The worst thing to happen to drums since Lars Ulrich.
Just curious is he still destroying 5 or 6 thousand dollars worth of drum equipment and cymbals on stage. Obviously an unnecessary way just to get attention. Why don't you donate some of that unwanted money to drum clinics around the country how about.
