The most important part of a musician is what you can hear on a record. Jason’s antics on stage was a bonus but take it from me rob is another animal live as well.
Lets be honest, 90% of kirks solos sound the same. Pretty straight forward shredding. He has some that stood out like unforgiven obviously. I was always surprised with kirks soloing usually not really standing out considering he is such a big fan of alex lifeson from rush, one of the finest and most creative soloists in rock music history. For kirk to spend so much time listening to alex and not really picking up on too much of what made alex great is so crazy to me.
Cliff taught James about music theory among other things. james even admitted that in an interview. Cliff was the protagonist for the band's first 4 albums. his creativity couldn't be replaced as he was an extremely unique musician. very sad day when he passed for who knows what other musical creations he would have come up with for metallica.
I'm just wondering, what's the difference in terms of the playing between these bassists.. there's not much room for improvisation or distinct bass lines in metallica's music or metal in general.
I completely disagree. Cliff was a driving force behind some of the best albums of all time . After cliff died Metallicas music took a steep decline and its never really came back to the greatness Metallica was when cliff was in the band.
Look I love Rob he inspired me to play bass but... Jason made me want to sing play bass and grow my hair long and shave the sides of my head like Jason. Moral of the statement Jason over Rob!
Cliff was the conductor the heart and soul. Jason was the voice and pressence. Rob T. Is the bass technician he can jam. All legends in their own right all equal.
Thank you! Someone actually thought I put him as #2, quit watching, and left an angry comment. He has since deleted the comment after I told him to watch another 5 more seconds. 😂
Jason should be #2. He got the band through the roughest time. He was there for the biggest growth of the band. He stuck it out for years through endless hazing and being treated like an outsider. He wasn't allowed creative influence or involved in the writing process. They treated him like a studio musician they took on tour and their personal punching bag. If it wasn't for Jason sticking around for so long, it's arguable that Metallica wouldn't have survived. Rob stepped into the band while they were already massively successful, world renowned, and most importantly, the other members had already gone to therapy so they didn't treat him like absolute dog shit. If they treated Rob 1/10th the way they treated Jason, Rob would have quit years ago.
Cliff being #1 is a nobrainer. But the 2nd place remains debatable. To me Rob definitely has some very nasty technical skills, but more in the funkier realms of music. Jason on the other hand is a metal WarBEAST. His presence on stage, his vocals his relentless attacks with that pick. It’s beyond insane. And then how he contributed to the songs. For me it’s 2nd for Jason!
@@temorenapeita3686 TBH that would also apply to rest of the band? Rob is likely the most accomplished musically in the band. But what Rob contributes most is as a calming influence amongst the other members of the band. An unknown replacement would have been eaten alive so they needed an established veteran and decidedly more mature presence.
i will say rob is more skillful than jason, rob is more like a funk bassist, he is wasting his talent in metallica. I will say jason is a better metal bassist than rob
Jason was the best because of his presence on stage, singing, and he played very well, but you can argue that Cliff due to how he would shred and solo. But not gonna lie Rob isn’t as good to me because doesn’t have the same energy, but is still a good player.
Cliff had way more stage presence than Jason, he made everyone respect him with his notorious playing and great headbanging and also had good backing vocals, sadly he didn't live enough for the big concerts
I know we all have our opinions, I certainly do. But how, with any clean conscience could you rank Jason 3? Easily he and Cliff are arguably THE bassists that helped make Metallica what they are today. Cliff for his musical approach to songwriting and how he played lead bass, so to speak. And Jason for stepping in when the band was at a very dark but pivotal time in their career. He IS the quintessential bassist after Cliff for this band. And this is by no means disrespect to Rob, as Rob is a great bassist in his own right and he does help the band immensely. I share with him a love of some of the same musical inspirations (Jaco Pastorius in particular). Unfortunately for Rob, he wasn't a part of Metallica's pivotal times: the 80s and the 90s. Again, with respect to Rob and Ron but it should've been 1. Cliff, 2. Jason, 3. Rob, 4. Ron, 5. Bob...
It's all based on personal experience. Cliff and Jason are my 1a and 1b. Metallica is my favorite all-time band because of those two and part of the reason I play bass. Rob is a very good bassist but I haven't fell in love with the albums he is associated with as much as I did with Cliff and Jason. I don't find myself wanting to play his bass lines like I do Orion, One, Enter Sandman, My Friend of Misery and Of Wolf and Man.
this is a driving point, nothing of their new music inspires me to want to learn it on guitar. not the way the old guard did. Rob was masterful in suicidal and his work there with that band is inspirational. his addition to metallica always felt forced to me and by the time he joined on, they had already lost alot of what made them metallica imo
For anyone who might not know, Jason's playing on Flotsam and Jetsam's "Doomsday for the Deceiver" is by far his best recorded work...possibly the best pick playing ever recorded imo.
The entire album shreds. Of course they never reached Metallica heights, but they were awesome and Doomsday was one of their best (No Place for Disgrace is still my favorite)
Yeah definitely, doomsday for the Deceiver was one of my faves back in the day, No Place For Disgrace another killer. Makes me want to relive on RUclips.
Wow, when cliff said “we do what we want to do and if they consider that selling out then, whatever”, it really made me think, he might not have fought the sell out era of Metallica that much, and I’m one of the very few who is fine with that, I share the sentiment that they should make the music they want to make, and luckily I enjoy other genres just as much as thrash, so it’s a win win for me really
I highly agree. I’ve been saying the same thing on countless other videos. Cliff had a wide musical pallet. He actually admitted in an interview that he had to get accustomed to a faster paced thrashing style when he joined Metallica. Cliff also liked country music and country styled rock, so I can totally see the black album and Load/ReLoad albums still happening if Cliff were still alive. They might’ve actually sounded more melodic but Metallica most likely would have still made the same evolutionary change.
There's doing what you want and just bandwagon/trend following. I don't think Cliff would be down for following trends like metallica did during the 90s/2000s
@@123612100 that’s what so weird, is it’s impossible to tell if they were trend following just for the sake of it, load and reload kinda followed the grunge of the 90’s, yet James genuinely loved the western vibe and the outlaw torn is genuinely one of the songs he is the proudest of making, and st anger followed the nu metal era, and yet it genuinely seemed to be the aggressive route the band needed to go down to mend the fucked up state they were in
5. Bob Rock 4. Ron McGovney 3. Robert Trujillo 2. Cliff Burton 1. Jason Newsted If I’m stepping on any toes, oh well. Newsted is the best and it is what it is 🤷🏻♂️😂
I love Metallica from beginning to end but i always find myself listening to the kill em all, ride the lightning, master, and and justice most. They early stuff is by far their best music. Robert is the best bass player they have ever had Jason was the best performer they have ever had Cliff was the best contributor to the song writing they ever had.
@@ikon4255 in terms of writing yes he was the greatest bassist Metallica ever had but robert is slightly better in terms of playing due to his age experience and he also contributed in tendency and ozzy but cliff died at a very young age i am sure if he would be alive today he would have been superior than rob but no metallica bassist comes close to him in terms of song writing that how he used Kirk's creeping death die part riff which he wrote at the age of sixteen and awosome songs like for whom the bells troll and badass instrumentals like orion and call of ktulu and he was also professionally trained in classical music and he was a pianist before he picked up bass that was the reason he was ablo to write riffs and harmonies fitting to the song so flawlessely he used to play bass as if he is the lead guitarist he was the backbone of the band at that time
That blows my mind too! I think it seems like Jason played longer than Rob because Jason was there during the band's most productive years. I grew up with Jason, but put Rob as number 2 because his style is closest to Cliff.
@@AllThingsTop5 that is just stupid.. why would jason copy cliff? he have his own style and presence and energy. that is the whole point as a musician.. and i dont think that jason couldnt play Orion, i think band didnt want to. if james and lars didnt like his style, the could fired him and find cliff no2 or close. jason was everything in that band for 14 year and you put him on third place?! shame on you
Ok ok let’s be honest!! Cliff made Metallica and put them on the map (coolest) and Jason was Metallica but Robert Trujillo is on a whole nother level bro!!!! Dude is a prodigy!
As a bass player myself, this is pretty accurate. I’d put Cliff and Robert as a tie. I’ve seen Robert Trujillo side stage when he played with Ozzy. That dude is amazing!!
Cliff will always be their best bassist. Jason and Rob both have done great for the band in their own ways, and I like them, but Cliff contributed a lot to the band in just those few years. He had amazing talent as a musician and his presence alone was huge. Too bad he died, it'd been great to have heard what else he would've cooked up.
1) Cliff (Pushed them to be better and play live.) 2) Jason (Let them walk all over him until he had enough.) 3) Ron (started it all) 4) Bob (Filled in as needed and pushed them all) 5) Rob (Only on 2 album unless you count LULU. But he is the longest bassist. Doesn't say very much. He acts like more of a fan than a member of the band. He should be thanking Jason now that they are treating him with more respect than they ever did Jason. If Rob was so great why didn't Ozzy fight to keep him?)
Rob is by far a better bass player than both Cliff and Jason. Everything he did outside of Metallica would play circles around ANYTHING that Cliff or Jason did, but he’s so grossly underutilized in Metallica that I’m surprised he even took the offer. Everyone knows Rob is too good for them.
Rob gets bonus points because he's the only one the rest of the band felt was able to play some of Cliffs songs properly, and frankly I gotta agree. Because of him we now get to Orion live again for the first time since Cliffs death. Which I am grateful for
@@AllThingsTop5 i can definitely tell by some of the things you decided to include .. i'm a mega fan myself and it makes me feel good to know people are putting the cool little known stuff out there. props again man.
Jason was my favorite. I started to get into Metallica when Garage Days came out (still my favorite go to listen by them) and then And Justice. Cliff and Rob were/are more technically proficient bassists, but Jason had a shit ton of stage presence and would sing/scream his head off. He was the perfect bassist for that band, especially the size of the shoes he had to fill.
Giving a like no only because it’s a great video but I learned something new. Had no idea about Bob Rock playing some bass for I Disappear preproduction
I'd argue that while Jason's songs are more "behaved" than Cliff's... his style is iconic, he was the one holding Metallica to their roots, and when he was unable to hold Metallica into what it should have kept being, he was somewhat forced to seek for new song opportunities elsewhere. Not to say, Jason barking at the back vocals are often more entertaining than James himself...
Well, Bob played gigs with them, so he's a member. However, I respectfully disagree with the top 3. (Not a hate comment, I'm just bringing out my opinion here) I'd rather put Jason on 2nd because of his dedication to the studio work as well as for the showmanship on the live gigs, and then Robert on 3rd; no hate, I love him just as much as I love Cliff and Jason, he just didn't leave a notable mark on the studio stuff like they did.
Of course everyone is a Cliff head, naturally, myself included. That being said, considering the atmosphere of the band and the music produced therein, Jason was absolutely astronomical. Big respect to Rob who has also contributed so much even to this day. All masters who played their part in their own way
Ron was actually in Hirax in the late 80s, during the Baloff period after Katon had left, which essentially made Hirax a supergroup during that period (ex-Exodus vocalist and ex-Metallica bass player in the same band)
I'd put Jason at one, as would so many other fans. He was a perfect fit, a real metal head, had by leaps and bounds the best Bass tone Gave his all on every single performance, could sing and his skills were underrated and more than adequate for that style of metal.

For kirk to spend so much time listening to alex and not really picking up on too much of what made alex great is so crazy to me.
if dave didn't do the things he did and have an ego he is a far more superior guitar player than Kirk

ARE YOU DEF-ER0G-AY?
I really love how Cliff played the bass and how Robert play the bass, but Jason is the Metallica's Soul.
James is Metallica's soul. Always has been. You can like Jason all you want, but James is the soul of the band.
I'm just wondering, what's the difference in terms of the playing between these bassists.. there's not much room for improvisation or distinct bass lines in metallica's music or metal in general.
Well, Rob is the best. Technically. But Metallica doesn't use his potential. But just look at his playing in Infectious Grooves. This is real mastery.
And Suicidal Tendencies
And Ozzy Osbourne
I completely disagree. Cliff was a driving force behind some of the best albums of all time . After cliff died Metallicas music took a steep decline and its never really came back to the greatness Metallica was when cliff was in the band.
@@bryancooper5495 rob is the better bass player. But cliff was also extremely good and did so much more than just play bass.
Cliff is way more technical. Just watch him play the intro to for whom the bell tolls to see.
Jason Newsted is the best for me. He added so much metal and energy in Metallica's lives. Insane backing vocals that make Creeping Death as a God song
I didn’t realize Jason was on creeping death. Interesting!
@@Eternalbozoit was cliff that did the backing vocals
Look I love Rob he inspired me to play bass but... Jason made me want to sing play bass and grow my hair long and shave the sides of my head like Jason. Moral of the statement Jason over Rob!
Jason Newsted... full package (bass and vocals). He was there during the rise of Metallica carrying the torch for Cliff.
Cliff was the conductor the heart and soul. Jason was the voice and pressence. Rob T. Is the bass technician he can jam. All legends in their own right all equal.

He wasn’t involved in song writing? He gets his first credits on blackened smh.

An unknown replacement would have been eaten alive so they needed an established veteran and decidedly more mature presence.
jason is a POSUER and a shit talking fraud.
Rob over Jason? Naaah, Rob has had nowhere near the same affect for the band.
Imagine if I had Cliff as #2 😀

@@temorenapeita3686 you wish lmao
@@saleusus Cliff beats rob but Rob musicianship > Jason, all top 3 are just so good though
@@temorenapeita3686 Rob is boring
Jason was the best because of his presence on stage, singing, and he played very well, but you can argue that Cliff due to how he would shred and solo. But not gonna lie Rob isn’t as good to me because doesn’t have the same energy, but is still a good player.
Rob doesn't have Jason's energy but... he has that "transforms into a gorilla playing an upright bass" energy which I dig.
Cliff, 2. Jason, 3. Rob, 4. Ron, 5. Bob...
Totally agree. I knee they'd put Jason 3rd🤦♂️
I think Jason should be in number 2
That was a tough one for me. Ultimately I compared them all to Cliff and Rob was closest in style
@@AllThingsTop5 agree with you
@@AllThingsTop5Rob just doesn't work in this band
Looking forward to the next vid!
More to come!
For anyone who might not know, Jason's playing on Flotsam and Jetsam's "Doomsday for the Deceiver" is by far his best recorded work...possibly the best pick playing ever recorded imo.
Hearhear!
I loved that album!
The bass part in the middle of Metal Shock is insane.

Cliff was the best contributor to the song writing they ever had.
cliff is miles better than rob

2: jason
3: rob
4: ron

Lmao funny but Jason should be #2. Strange to think that rob has been in the band longer than Jason.
That blows my mind too! I think it seems like Jason played longer than Rob because Jason was there during the band's most productive years. I grew up with Jason, but put Rob as number 2 because his style is closest to Cliff.

Ok ok let’s be honest!! Cliff made Metallica and put them on the map (coolest) and Jason was Metallica but Robert Trujillo is on a whole nother level bro!!!! Dude is a prodigy!
Jason was metallicas best bassist.

3. Rob, 2. Cliff, 1. JASON (unmatched live)
Too bad he died, it'd been great to have heard what else he would've cooked up.
if cliff lived the black album wouldn't have happened! in my opinion
@ConservativeKirbyXIcKXIcliff literally changed the world of metal bass forever, no one will ever be able to replicate him
Rob is really good live too. Did a really nice job on Anesthesia when I saw them on the tour for Hardwired
1) Cliff (Pushed them to be better and play live.)
2) Jason (Let them walk all over him until he had enough.)
3) Ron (started it all)
4) Bob (Filled in as needed and pushed them all)
5) Rob (Only on 2 album unless you count LULU. But he is the longest bassist. Doesn't say very much. He acts like more of a fan than a member of the band. He should be thanking Jason now that they are treating him with more respect than they ever did Jason. If Rob was so great why didn't Ozzy fight to keep him?)
Metallica offered rob a million dollars in advance, it was pretty much an offer he couldn't refuse
@@KaiDiesAgain Oh I'm sure he was already a millionaire before he joined Metallica.
Ozzy has that with bandmates if they wanna go they go. that simple
He was a hired gun with Ozzy, Metallica made him a member of the band.

@@AllThingsTop5 just like to shit on jason..

Yes, I agree with the list and that Bob Rock should be considered one of five bassists for Metallica.

Yes, Bob Rock is certainly one of Metallica's bassists. Playing and composing bass for an entire album is more than enough to qualify him.

The black album was decent too.

It's the The Shit Hits the Sheds tour from 1994
Jason is the pure heart and soul of metallica, without him we wouldn’t have the black album

Jason is number one in my book and I was around during the Cliff era R.I.P. Jason brought the band to its highest point Rob is great but infused to much funk into mix that doesn't mix with what I deem is real Metallica
Jason was there for the ride. I liked Jason a lot in Metallica but no way was he better than Cliff Burton (R.I.P.) and, to be honest Jason was very much underappreciated and had hella big shoes to fill. Robert is awesome as well, but Metallica is much older now and they're songwriting is not near as heavy as the early days. In my opinion, Cliff's contribution to Metallica was more in his knowledge of music than his actual bass playing. Not taking anything away from his bass playing, which was great, but he taught Metallica how to write amazing music, and that contribution lived on in the band after he died.
