They embraced him for a time but they were kids dealing with the death of their brother and before they could learn to deal with such a tragedy had him replaced. They were just kids and people sometimes think with their hearts instead of their minds. They also bought into the the frat boy initiation process.
its a lot bigger actually, they turned down his bass in albums, they didnt include him in many songwritting ownership credits, they heckled him all the time, they didnt want to do my friend of misery live ,one thing i saw him talk personally about was that they made a "deal" that metallica is their main project and no one can do anything else so Jason couldnt experiment or do something else without leaving, meanwhile James was doing shit like making a song for south park they literally had to go to therapy for this shit its more complicated than any of us will know

Cliff was there for the badass thrash years, Jason was there for their dominant years ( the black album ) and rob is there for the bands golden years. That's how I like to think of it anyway
I won't trash you for your opinion, but I can't seem to understand how you consider Metallica's golden years are after the Black Album. Unless you're talking about their success. But if you mean quality, Metallica's golden years were definitely Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets.
@@konayuki8525 I've met Newsted and asked him the same thing. He went crazy. Asking me who I am. And threatening me with do you know who I am. Pertaining to that he's all hooked up and important and that I better watch out. Cliff never wanted to go pop music and they offed him.
11:20 "Not just any bass amp head" *Continues reading question like there wasn't a story there* Thank god Jason interrupted Graham to tell that story. I was like, bro, you're not gonna ask about that?
Duude... Right?... Sentimental value is priceless, no doubt.
Exactly, come on bro. Jason is trying to tell him and he wants to ask the next question. Just like the ATV accident. Kid was like “oh yeah”, he had no clue
Jason has changed so much over the years. Looked like an evil, angry guy when he played with Metallica but now is really composed and enlightened. Such a great musician and really does a fantastic job.
Jason Newsted is without a doubt my favorite Metallica member and absolutely the most lovely man of the band. He is such a humble and real stand up guy. He was a loyal soldier for Tallica and deserved better.
Jason was smart enough to learn the Metallica set list for his audition. So easy and obvious and probably no one else did it. Brilliant strategy to get a job.
I played in bands for years and it is amazing how many people showed up to auditions not knowing any of the music you play. The ones who always got the job were the ones that put in the time and effort to come prepared
S.T. was out in 88-89 but I knew about them in 87 and Rob. Skating in long Beach. Brother took me too Metallica shows in 85 when I was fkin 11. Knew about flotsam and triumph. A sat and watched Cliff set up and play, 5 feet away, in a punk bar. That was my childhood, love that Rob is in Metallica now. They played Madrid last night and sounded extremely good. Metallica still kicks ass:)
BenFoe Pee He grew up with Metallica when Newstead was part of the band so that's his favourite line up.. What's your point you're trying to make, you muppet?
Would've loved to see Metallica live with either Cliff and Jason, so i could compare... But 3 weeks before i was born, Cliff died. Nah, I think he’s a good interviewer. Makes people feel comfortable. Sometimes you miss an obvious Segue. I’ve interviewed over a hundred people, I can tell you, it happens.
@rj zander You must be a non Metallica Fan. Of course Cliff will always be the number 1 Metallica bass legend. Jason eventually brought a lot to Metallica. Remember, the power of his backup vocals? Next I have seen Metallica Live in concert about 12 times. My first time seeing them was in Cincinnati in 1985. I was 15. The last time that I saw them with Jason was in 2000 and the band was incredibly tight, playing extremely well.
@@taotuhao5969 Jason is a legend. I love Robert Trujillo as well but... Metallica has never been the same since Jason left. Rob really needs to be back in Suicidal... his talents are totally wasted playing Metallica songs. BUT... I guarantee you he is making a lot more money with Metallica... SO ... I get it.
When Jason mentions that the Black Album routinely sells about 4,000 to 5,000 copies per week, he is not exaggerating. As of the week that I post this (November 7, 2017) the Black Album is in it's 455th week on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart (#139 this week if you're wondering). Currently only 5 albums in all of Billboard's chart history have spent more weeks on the Top 200: 5) My Fair Lady Soundtrack at 480 weeks; 4) Journey's Greatest Hits, 485 weeks; 3) Johnny's Greatest Hits from Johnny Mathis, 490 weeks; 2) Bob Marley and the Wailer's greatest hits album Legend, 494 weeks; and the kings of the Billboard Top 200.... Pink Floyd with their groundbreaking album Dark Side of the moon, 933 weeks (!). First of all, what a strangely eclectic grouping of musical tastes, right? Johnny Mathis, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Journey... My Fair Lady?!? But this is all of 60+ years of chart history in play, so I get it. It's just amazing that on a weekly basis, year in and year out, 4 or 5 thousand people on average buy the Black Album every week and keep it charting. Is The Black Album this generations' Dark Side of the Moon? Well, maybe!
I have no issues with Gene, I was just very surprised he was an inspiration for Jason. Then again, there have been plenty of young drummers inspired by Lars so there's that. You just never know.
Metallica treated Jason like crap after he joined the band.I can understand a little hazing but they overdid it way too much.Im surprised Jason put up with it long as he did.I couldnt have. They took their frustrations out on Jason for Cliffs death and that was bullshit.
You guys realize they were just 22-23 years old when Cliff died, right? They were all skyrocketing to fame, dealing with all of that, and then lose their brother in a horrific accident -- which was a life-altering near-death experience for the rest of them. Then they had to pick back up, find a new bassist, and get right back on tour. All of this with very little grieving and processing. It was a time when no one really thought of counseling as a matter of course. So you had three guys who grew up in the band together and just survived a horrible accident that took the life of their best friend -- and Jason. Why are people so surprised that they had a hard time dealing with this? Yes, they acted very shitty. And yes, they regret having acted very shitty. But I'm not going to judge how a bunch of 22 and 23 year-olds acted when they just went through an experience like that and then Jason is the guy replacing their brother.
rock dog they weren’t THAT fucked up. The stories were greatly exaggerated. Like they said “we had to show him you just don’t come up from the street into the big leagues, it’s not that easy” lol
Cliff Burton was obviously phenomenal but Jason had an amazing stage presence and was great on backing vocals. And Rob is a beast too they're all great
Cool. If Lars is still alive and they ever want to make a sequel to Some Kind of Monster in 2030, then he can film himself auctioning them off at Sotheby's for yet another couple of millions.
Because artists who last long in the mainstream music business are jagger's genotyp persons: ready to do anything to keep on being bankable. The purest ones leave this business quick to fulfill their passion, trying not to prostitute it.
And I was fortunate enough to be at one of the , if not THE very first Flotsom (at that time, "The Dogz") show that they performed. It was on the anniversary of Randy Rhoads' death that a few local bands in Phoenix were doing in honor. To this day I can remember in detail The Dogz and Jason's performance. He was playing this cheap Hondo II Explorer bass and just KILLING IT! Me, as a young up and coming bass player myself. He caught my attention and inspired me so much. As I got into the local band scene. I got to know Jason a little bit just in passing from time to time. Talking music, bass stuff and Iron Maiden with him every once in a wile. He was such a down to earth guy back then. Never had a big head. When he made it in Metallica. I felt that if anyone in the local music scene back then deserved it. It was him. Because of that. I have followed his career over the years. Every interview up to this one I have seen. It still the same old Jason. I can tell he never changed or ever went ROCK STAR. He was one of my bass heroes and influences( along with Geezer and Steve Harris) way before Metallica and Flotsom. I have been proud of him.
Aside from his musicianship, I've always appreciated this guy's humility. The expression "not letting success go to one's head" definitely comes to mind. He doesn't have a pretentious bone in his body.
Metallica is doing what all the greatest have ever done. Kept playing but now practically flawless live performances because now they’re all sober. Just wished Jason was with them to finish out the legendary Metallica. I think my wife of 27 years may now understand why I lived and loved Metallica from the late 80’s! No I liked them more when justice came out regardless of bass issue.
I hated where Metallica went musically after Trujillo joined. St.Anger is the worst album in the Metallica collection. Mad respect for the mans skills though
@@danbest6800 Trujilo didnt really have much to do with St anger. The album was made by the time he joined -- the bass on the record isnt even his work.
In Hired Gun, when he talks about reading about Cliff’s death in the paper and getting the call to go audition for Metallica like 2 weeks later. Man listen, I almost burst into tears. That was the first time I heard the story in depth because I was 2 when Cliff died but it was in that moment when my love and respect for Jason came full circle. This man deserves the world! And his due! Give him his flowers while he can still smell them.
What did Rex Brown ever do besides follow Dimebag’s rhythm guitar? Not a god damn thing. The rest of the band used to joke about him getting a free ride. They had a nickname for him behind his back but I can’t remember what it was.

I could listen to this guy talk and tell stories all day. I love how every answer turns into more than Graham bargained for, but it's not rambling, it's all interesting stuff that you actually want to hear.
Pretty heavy to know that the Burtons embraced and supported Newsted and the Metallica guys were nothing but shitbags to him.
That's a bit dramatic. Metallica were shitbags to him? They made him rich, and besides he was always free to leave if felt he was shat upon.
BenFoe Pee made him rich... saints they are
I'm sure they had good times together but they never forgot how he replaced someone they never wanted gone.
They embraced him for a time but they were kids dealing with the death of their brother and before they could learn to deal with such a tragedy had him replaced. They were just kids and people sometimes think with their hearts instead of their minds. They also bought into the the frat boy initiation process.
its a lot bigger actually, they turned down his bass in albums, they didnt include him in many songwritting ownership credits, they heckled him all the time, they didnt want to do my friend of misery live ,one thing i saw him talk personally about was that they made a "deal" that metallica is their main project and no one can do anything else so Jason couldnt experiment or do something else without leaving, meanwhile James was doing shit like making a song for south park
they literally had to go to therapy for this shit its more complicated than any of us will know
Creeping death with Jason belting out lyrics still give chills
“DIE, DIE, DIE, DIE, yyyyyyyyyeeeeEEEEEAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH” so badass
I went to the FAITH NO MORE, METALLICA, GnR concert in 1992 DC ... Kirky says "Mother fockin' die! Die! By my hand, I creep across the land. Killing 1stborn man. Cliffy Burton was the BEST! Creeping Death amazing song! Jason played upstanding, sang better than James too.
Absolutely!
HE FOCKIN LEFT THE BAND
Exclamation point! Period. Eeeuuuughskskkah!
lol funny avatar and name
XD
Which part of that get out of the equation?
When the fock did we turn into the bad guys?
hahaqhaha
Trust me, I only have respect and love for Trujillo, but I still miss Jason. just his vocals and awesome attitude is something that's a thing of beauty. It'd be cool if he played a show here and there with Metallica. I don't want Rob out of the band or anything, I just really, really miss Newsted.
Same...
Stacci Guma golden years means height of success.
I feel the same way
Jason said in an interview "Cliff's fate brought about my destiny".........Shit still gives me goosebumps
That's deep. Jason is a cool guy.
He's a real jerkoff in real life.
@@jonclarkson5911 how so?
@@konayuki8525 I've met Newsted and asked him the same thing. He went crazy. Asking me who I am. And threatening me with do you know who I am. Pertaining to that he's all hooked up and important and that I better watch out. Cliff never wanted to go pop music and they offed him.
@@BarrySwords No he's not. He's a country club asshole.
“That’s where rob van dam is from”

And Cheerios!
he had no fucking clue lol
Hahahaha that blank expression said it all didnt it. Haha
11:20 "Not just any bass amp head" *Continues reading question like there wasn't a story there*
Thank god Jason interrupted Graham to tell that story. I was like, bro, you're not gonna ask about that?
Duude... Right?... I mean, you can tell that Jason loves storytelling and they kept editing a lot of the stories he went on and went on, but about that bass head, I wasn't the only one wondering how a multimillionaire musician could care so much about a "falling bass head" and nooooww we know. Sentimental value is priceless, no doubt.
Exactly, come on bro. Jason is trying to tell him and he wants to ask the next question. Just like the ATV accident. Kid was like “oh yeah”, he had no clue
Those SVT heads are so heavy. He’s lucky it didn’t rip his arm out of the socket!
@@lateralustrated8808 :(
He caught his falling #1 Ampeg SVT bass amp head that weighs 38Kg/ 84lb. Enough to rip an arm out of a shoulder 😖
Jason has changed so much over the years. Looked like an evil, angry guy when he played with Metallica but now is really composed and enlightened. Such a great musician and really does a fantastic job.
He has been always like this.
@@ItsNotaTuhmah how people dont realise that he's always been the nice chill dude with slight OCD anxiety that he portrays here is beyond me
I think age does that to people.
Alter Egos That was a stage act. Always was the cooler man in the band
Dude Lmao nope, I know plenty of old assholes.
Jason Newsted is without a doubt my favorite Metallica member and absolutely the most lovely man of the band. He is such a humble and real stand up guy. He was a loyal soldier for Tallica and deserved better.
Jason is the reason I started playing bass. Terribly underrated musician.
Underrated? By who?
Underrated? He's often considered the best or 2nd best bassist of Metallica
Do you mean underrated because everyone keeps repeating how he is not Cliff?
Jason was smart enough to learn the Metallica set list for his audition. So easy and obvious and probably no one else did it. Brilliant strategy to get a job.
I played in bands for years and it is amazing how many people showed up to auditions not knowing any of the music you play. The ones who always got the job were the ones that put in the time and effort to come prepared
Imagine Jason’s backing vocals on something like “spit out the bone”or “Broken, Beaten, Scarred”. I bet it would have been sick
i always sing "spit out the bone" like jason
I love all of Metallica's bassists, however, since I grew up during Newstead's time, he is my favorite.
So you're completely objective when it comes to music, huh?
S.T. was out in 88-89 but I knew about them in 87 and Rob.
100% Agreed!!!
Would've loved to see Metallica live with either Cliff and Jason, so i could compare... But 3 weeks before i was born, Cliff died. Jason in my opinion is a better fit to Metallica than Rob will ever be. Sad they did'nt allow Jason to do some other projects while Lars, James and Kirk were having time off with their families.. If they did, he'd probably still be in the band.
So he left Metallica long time ago but he didn't miss anything actually
sad but true!!! lol
Hardwired was badass, super similar to Kill em All just better production
@@willr5004 i've been into metallica for a few years now, and have literally only listened to them. Just started getting into hardwired about a month ago and it's so good
Will R Hardwired is the best they’ve sounded since the black album. To me it sounds like a hybrid of Justice and Kill em All.
Hossam Saad he missed being on death magnetic which was great
"I was born in 1963" Bruh, he looks 40.
Seriously man. He's aged unbelievably well.
He’s a year younger than my mom, Holy crap.
I know, I'm 37 and he looks helluva better than me that's for sure lol
Im like 14, and he looks better than me
Thats what good wine and the island life does for you.
Refreshes the soul keeps the body young.
When he was talking about Cliff’s parents... that hit me right in the feels😥
Jason seems like he could be anyone’s best friend! Great human being!
Jason looks and sounds like he’d make one of the nicest counsellors in the world and most understanding
His voice starts to shake while talking about Cliffs parents. Damn, that's some emotional shit.
I think Jason was the guy who made Metallica such a great band to see live... I mean I love their music so much but when it comes to live performances 86-00 was the best time ever
I saw them for the first time in my hometown at the Big Day Out, and it was Jason who spotted someone getting beaten up in the crowd and made the band stop playing after security did absolutely nothing. Seems like a fucking stand up guy
"I would write songs about Jesus" DAMN that was funny. I love listening to Jason's stories, he's really a great story teller.
I love Jason, I wish him nothing but the best.
Same here my man, I would love to meet him one day
I like Jason dropping an obvious hint he has a story and the interviewer just doesn't get the hint:
J: Not just any bass head.... THE bass head.
Interviewer: ah, right, cool..... So next question.....
J: It made the Black Album, Load etc....
No doubt, that happened more than once. This guy was the wrong guy to interview Jason Newsted, its like he didn't even know that he was talking to a living legend.
SO ... I get it.
is it an Ampeg??
His speaking voice is extremely different from his vocals and screams
I love his talking voice, very calming and relaxed
Palpatine 77 are u serious? Whos buying it nowadays? Thats cool if its true!
@@mattpickles89 New generations of kids getting into Metallica all the time. Of course, a big portion of those sales these days are likely digital.

Don't doubt it at all, I've had to buy it 4 or 5 times over the years. Gets scratched or some cunt pinches it lol.
Gene Simmons inspired him? Wow, I'd say he kind of surpassed one of his idols.
Gene Simmons is a fucking idiot. I cant believe he was the inspiration for somebody like Jason.
I have no issues with Gene, I was just very surprised he was an inspiration for Jason. Then again, there have been plenty of young drummers inspired by Lars so there's that. You just never know.
KalvinEllis Lars used to be good in the 80s and early 90s, its just that he got lazy.

Super super SUPER nice guy. Had the chance to meet and interview him myself on MTV and he as genuine as you could imagine
Wow! I never knew Cliff's family welcomed him into the band. That's some powerful feels. So glad I watched this, thank you Loudwire!
It takes a genuine person to enter the band after the fan favorite member passed away and become a fan favorite in no time. Jason's energy is missed..

Hard to imagine:

Guy looks great for 55 years old. Good to see you are doing well Jason. Keep it up man.
I’ve been crazy about their guy since I was 14! I’m now 44, so that’s 30 years of love there!❤️❤️❤️
Metallica treated Jason like crap after he joined the band.I can understand a little hazing but they overdid it way too much.Im surprised Jason put up with it long as he did.I couldnt have. They took their frustrations out on Jason for Cliffs death and that was bullshit.
I believe Dave Mustaine even more. They were arrogant nasty douchebags. Instead of supporting him and looking after him as Cliff's father did.
Jason stated in interviews that the stories were greatly exaggerated.
rock dog they weren’t THAT fucked up. The stories were greatly exaggerated. Like they said “we had to show him you just don’t come up from the street into the big leagues, it’s not that easy” lol
@@petecomas5595 No, half of these folk do not realize this. Speculation is much easier for most.

Joseph Marrero he has, Jason has said this!
Cool. If Lars is still alive and they ever want to make a sequel to Some Kind of Monster in 2030, then he can film himself auctioning them off at Sotheby's for yet another couple of millions.
Jason said Lars was very supportive of him from the start. He encouraged him and I believe actually introduced him to some influential people
I do know he GAVE one to, Joe Satriani
He fokn left the baaaand
Can we just appreciate that Jason has aged the best out of any member of Metallica 😂😂😂

"The Burtons were very nice too me." That is very touching.
I feel sorry for Jason, he plays flawlessy with several bands and always got shit on in the process.
That's what happens when you're a sweetheart. Something tells me that he's kind of a softy.
Well he properly joined metallica at the wrong time with everything that happened then not that was an excuse for what they did to him.
Cool story!
Luka Cee pove itttt
Aside from his musicianship, I've always appreciated this guy's humility. The expression "not letting success go to one's head" definitely comes to mind. He doesn't have a pretentious bone in his body.
Love Trujillo but I also think Metallica's live performances would be way crazier if Jason was still with them. Oh well
Or cliff.. :((
Metallica is doing what all the greatest have ever done. Kept playing but now practically flawless live performances because now they’re all sober.
Just wished Jason was with them to finish out the legendary Metallica.
I think my wife of 27 years may now understand why I lived and loved Metallica from the late 80’s!

Most underrated metal bassist along with Rex Brown.
Thought Jason has been considered one of the greatest, surpassing Gene Simmons.
What did Rex Brown ever do besides follow Dimebag’s rhythm guitar? Not a god damn thing. The rest of the band used to joke about him getting a free ride. They had a nickname for him behind his back but I can’t remember what it was.
